Coxie, as John Cox is affectionately known, was a beloved bartender at Maloney's Bar in Butte until he retired at the age of 75. A Marine and former police officer in San Diego, Coxie provided a friendly face at the greatest bar ever. Ted Ackerman was a standout on the Montana Tech basketball team 50 years ago. From 1971 through 1974, Ackerman tossed in 1,681 points for the Orediggers. He went on to a successful coaching career at Butte High, where his girls' teams went 96-80 from 1982 through 1989.  With the Oredigger men playing some huge games (hopefully two) at the HPER Complex this week, I thought it would be a good time to go back and remember a Tech great from a half century ago. For about 50 years, Bob Rowling hardly had a day off. He was busy making Butte a better place as the Butte-Silver Bow Parks & Recreation Director. He also served as a sports official, officiating football, basketball and softball. Affectionately known as "Rollo," Rowling refereed football at the Frontier and Big Sky Conference level. Butte High senior Mason Christian became a two-time State wrestling champion last weekend in Billings. He brought home the Class AA heavyweight title at the All-Class State Wrestling Tournament at the Billings Metra.  A year ago, he won the 182-pound crown. Richie O'Brien has been through a lot in his life. In high school he lost his father and battled a form of bone cancer. As a police officer in Butte-Silver Bow in May of 2017, O'Brien was involved in a high-speed chase and shootout with the father and son who murdered Broadwater County Deputy Mason Moore. Dylan Cook spent the 2022 NFL season on the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is an offensive lineman. The 2016 Butte High graduate sure came a long way from his days playing quarterback for the Bulldogs. Cook, who missed almost all of his senior season at Butte High with an injury, played quarterback at MSU-Northern before heading to the University of Montana. Rick Sparks is a Butte Central coaching legend. Before that, he was a Butte High Bulldog. "Sparky," as he is affectionately called, was an All-State center for Butte High's undefeated state championship football team in 1964. He is one of seven members of that team inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame. He then went on to play for the Montana Grizzlies before returning to Butte to coach the Maroons. Whether you are talking about an athlete or a coach, nobody was better than Meg Murphy when it comes to girls' and women's sports in the Mining City. She was part of three team state titles (two in track and one in basketball) in her playing days at Butte Central. As a coach, she led the Maroons to five state titles in two sports (1997, 1999 and 2000 in softball and 2011 and 2016 in basketball).  Murphy retired following the 2021-22 season.
