3 Ways to Avoid Awkward Conversations with Systems

Have you ever heard the lines, "sorry, it's company policy" or "I don't know, let me transfer you to my manager"? If I'm being honest, as a business owner, whenever I hear these lines, there's a part of me that gets really jealous. I mean wouldn't it be nice if we could all just forward tricky emails and requests to our "manager"? Or tell those over-demanding clients, "Sorry, there's nothing I can do about that, it's company policy." As business owners, we get a lot of random requests and questions ranging from over-the-top exciting to excruciatingly uncomfortable. But I have some good news! You can create many different types of systems and automations in your business to eliminate a lot of those awkward situations virtually overnight! In this episode, I'm sharing three examples of systems that my coaching clients and I have used to avoid some really awkward situations.SHOW NOTES: https://jadeboyd.co/avoid-awkward-conversations-with-systems/LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Speaking QuestionnairePodcast Guest QuestionnaireThe Business Edit™ Coaching Program CONNECT WITH JADEWebsiteInstagramJoin My Email List LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS + PRODUCTIVITYOrganize your Business Digital CourseThe Business Edit Coaching ProgramFREE RESOURCESFREE Task Batching WorkbookFREE Weekly Review ChecklistThe Business Minimalist Blueprint WorkbookThe Business Minimalist Podcast ArchiveMentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.

A Creative Business, Diagnosis, and Massive Shift with Colton Carr

At the end of your life, what will matter most to you? Most of us act like we'll live forever and have plenty of time to do and accomplish what we want to. But in reality, none of us know how much time we have left. We're not promised tomorrow, and when we live in that truth, our perspective of what's productive changes. This is why I'm so excited to share this interview with my friend (and podcast editor!), Colton Carr. My No Streaming September Productivity Challenge Recap

Have you ever tried to watch less TV? It's not easy to do! Unless you're one of those people who doesn't own a TV (which I'm seriously impressed by), it can be hard to strike the right balance between enjoying a good movie and distracting yourself from the things that matter most to you. As part of my year of less challenge, I did a "No Streaming September" challenge where we put some hard limits on our TV time in the Boyd household. Before starting this challenge, I had fallen into some pretty bad TV habits that I wasn't proud of this year. For example, we fell into the habit of eating dinner in front of the TV every night, and I would frequently wake up on weekends and immediately watch TV while waking up. In his book, the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, John Mark Comer cited that the average American watches 1,642 hours of television each day. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good movie and will never swear off TV forever, but I also know that I don't want to spend nearly 2,000 hours watching someone else's story unfold while I'm neglecting my own. I was extremely surprised by what we discovered by going through this No Streaming September Challenge. It was impactful in so many ways and I'm really excited to share my tips, trials, and takeaways with you in this episode! If you're ready to set more intentional limits on TV time (without throwing it out the window) this episode will make getting started super simple for you. How to Measure Your Productivity

Have you ever felt like you were busy all day but accomplished absolutely nothing? Have you ever ended a day realizing you only crossed one thing off your to-do list but felt wildly accomplished? If you're focussed on becoming "more productive" it's important to understand how to measure your productivity. Otherwise, how will you know if you're making any progress?! The problem is that productivity can be difficult to measure - it's not so simple as how many tasks you cross off your list each day (wouldn't that be nice though?). On a global scale, we measure productivity by GDP (a country's total output). As a business owner, it can be tempting to fall in line - the more we make the more productive we are right? Yes and no. The United States may be #1 in GDP, but we're #15 in happiness. If you're hyper-focussed on improving the wrong metrics, it's easy to lose sight of what really matters. You could become super efficient and maybe even wildly "successful" without actually moving the needles that matter in your life and business. In this episode, I'm sharing a more well-rounded definition for what it really means to be productive as a modern woman in business as well as a simple formula for you to test out to measure your daily productivity. Press play to tune into the full episode, and change your definition of a "productive day" today!   LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: The United States Ranked Number 1 in GPD in 2023 The United States Ranked 15th in Happiness in 2023 Episode 07: My First 10K Month and What I Learned   CONNECT WITH JADE Website Instagram Join My Email List   LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY Organize your Business Digital Course The Business Minimalist Blueprint Digital Course The Business Edit Coaching Program FREE RESOURCES FREE Task Batching Workbook FREE Weekly Review Checklist The Business Minimalist Podcast Archive Mentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.

I Quit Dubsado: Here's What I'm Doing Instead

In this episode, I’m talking about a topic that a lot of you have requested from me. I shared earlier this year that I was thinking about switching from Dubsado to ClickUp to manage my entire client workflow. I got a lot of questions about how I came to that decision and what the transition has looked like for me. There are many reasons why I switched, so I’m dedicating a full podcast episode to why Dubsado ended up not being a good fit for me and how I'm managing my client workflow in ClickUp now. You may be surprised that I also added other software programs to my software stack to manage my workflow... but I'm getting ahead of myself. Before we jump in, I want to give a disclaimer that I still think Dubsado is a great software tool. Dubsado has continually improved their software, which is really important! I always look at a software's product roadmap before I sign up for it to see what their plan is for the future. I want to know what their development vision is to see if their business will grow alongside my business. While it wasn't a great choice for me based on how my business developed, it's still the number one business management software that I recommend to many of my clients who are creatives. So, don’t completely count Dubsado out yet! If you've realized that the software you chose to set up your client workflow isn't working for you and feel frustrated when things get glitchy, this episode might help you sort through some of the challenges you're having. If you have a coaching business or a service-based business, lean in close. This episode might open your eyes to some different options to consider. I'm really happy with the switch I made and it might be just want you’re looking for, too. There's so much I could say about ClickUp, but today I'm just going to talk about customer and client workflows, and what to consider when choosing your software stack to make your life easier and business more streamlined. By the way, if you haven't already heard, I do have a course for ClickUp - the Organize Your Business course. It goes through how I organize the entirety of my business within ClickUp - I’m talking goals and projects, all of my marketing channels, client work, course creation and course student management, all of my random admin tasks, etc. The course walks you through each of the folders with an example in the template, and gives you a behind-the-scenes look into how I use each and every folder in my own business to manage everything. My Quarterly Goal Setting Process

There are so many different strategies and ways to set goals as a business owner that it can feel overwhelming. That overwhelm can actually hinder your thought process around where your business is heading and keep you from making a plan to focus your efforts on the things you want to accomplish in your business. People who are overwhelmed rarely take action, so by breaking goal setting down in a way that is simple to understand and simple to do, you will get out of the goal-induced overwhelm and into action.  There are only three steps to a successful quarterly goal setting session that will help you build intentionally and help you see the results you want to get out of the next quarter in your business. My foundational structure is something you can build on top of as you get more comfortable with goal setting or if you're a seasoned goal setter. Quarterly goal setting is one of my favorite topics! Curating a Productive Environment for Goal Setting

If you're like me, you're likely to fall into the trap of productive procrastination. It's the type of procrastination that keeps you busy with one thing (usually busy work or menial tasks that are low on the priority list) to avoid doing things that actually move the needle forward in business and life. It's the type of procrastination that most work-from-home business owners are likely to fall into at home because distractions are EVERYWHERE. In business, we measure our productivity based on our goals. How do you determine if it was a productive year? I hope you're not tallying how many menial tasks you crossed off each day. I hope you're measuring how much growth and progress toward your goals those tasks have actually produced for your business and life. And if you set the wrong goals, you could easily waste a whole year moving your business in the wrong direction and realizing that you didn't accomplish much that was worth celebrating. With this in mind, your ability to set strategic and aligned goals can make or break your productivity as a business owner. Productivity starts with clarity on what you want to accomplish and as the CEO of your business, you're responsible for setting that vision and clarifying the direction. So it's really important that when you're setting goals, you're setting yourself up for the most productive goal setting session you could possibly have, right? Less Stuff, More Life: My Minimalist Home Journey

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the clutter in your life, both physical and mental? I certainly have, and that's why I decided to do my own "Year of Less Challenge" this year. Each month, I've challenged myself to do less of something in order to free up more time and space for the things that matter most to me. What started as a month-long decluttering challenge in April stretched into four transformative months of decluttering, reevaluating my possessions, and embracing an even more minimal-ish lifestyle.   Like many people, my journey into minimalism began in 2015 when I stumbled upon Marie Kondo's book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up." Little did I know that it would be the catalyst for a major life change and a decade long journey to pursuing minimalism in every area of my life and business.   Tune into this episode to learn more about my minimalist home journey, get a behind the scenes look at what it took to declutter my house from top to bottom this summer, and learn how this challenge has affected my business as a work-from-home entrepreneur!   SHOW NOTES: https://jadeboyd.co/my-minimalist-home-journey    LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Sign up for the Q4 Planning Workshop in Swisher, Iowa Join my email List to get weekly podcast updates Episode 031: Introducing the Year of Less Challenge – Dry January Episode 037: Year of Less Challenge: How I Broke Up with My Phone THE BEST BOOKS FOR BECOMING A MINIMALIST I learn something new every time I read a book about minimalism, because there are so many categories of things that we own. Live More Intentionally with a Seasonal Bucket List

At the time this episode goes live, everyone is starting to get excited to enter a new season. The Target shelves are filled with pumpkin spice candles, fall wreaths, and back-to-school supplies galore. Fall is my absolute favorite season for so many reasons. It's a season of routine, reflection, and winding down, which is why I thought it would be the perfect season to introduce this concept of the "seasonal bucket list".   You've probably heard of bucket lists, and have maybe even made one yourself. A bucket list is just a list of experiences or goals that you want to check off your list before you "kick the bucket". Usually, these are the types of experiences or goals that won't get prioritized in your life unless you make an effort to pay special attention to them. I mean when is skydiving or hiking the Grand Canyon really ever going to be the most urgent thing on your to-do list?   Creating a bucket list can help motivate and inspire you to start truly living and experiencing your life, take some risks, get out of your day-to-day routine, and take advantage of the time you have here on Earth. In other words, bucket lists can inspire you to live more intentionally and focus on things that matter to you. But what if we could infuse that same sense of purpose and excitement into our everyday lives, without waiting for a far-off someday?   In this episode, I'm going to share with you my process for creating a seasonal bucket list so you can lean into fall and live just a little more intentionally this season. You can also download a free Seasonal Bucket List Guide HERE to get the step-by-step summary sent to your inbox.     Links and Resources Mentioned in This Episode FREE Seasonal Bucket List Workbook   Subscribe to the Business Minimalist™ Podcast If you enjoyed this episode, you won't want to miss what's coming next! Simplify your Life with Categorical Decisions

In today's fast-paced world, decision-making can be overwhelming and mentally draining, especially for entrepreneurs. Did you know that on average, we make 35,000 decisions a day?! How I Broke Up with My Phone

My year of less challenge continues! A few months ago, I was speaking to a group of women in business about their challenges with productivity. Several women expressed that it was really difficult to set good boundaries with their phones while still showing up on social media (particularly Instagram) for their business. And I get it! As business owners, cookie-cutter productivity advice won't cut it when it comes to building a healthy relationship with technology. A lot of productivity experts will suggest that you take extreme measures like putting your phone in a drawer while you work or delete social media apps from your phone. And while that would certainly solve your problem, it's just not realistic for most small business owners. So in the month of February, as part of my Year of Less Challenge, I broke up with my phone. Now let me give a disclaimer: I already had an okay relationship with my phone, but there's always room to improve! In February, my relationship with my phone went from good to great, and I solved my Instagram scrolling issue once and for all. In today's episode, I'm sharing the changes I've made to my habits and routines so that I can still use my phone daily for for my business, without being sucked into a mindless scroll. I'm sharing what I tried, what worked, and what didn't work. Press play for fresh tips on how to spend less time scrolling and more time being present for the things that actually matter to you! The Passive Income Stream Every Savvy Business Owner Should Have

I'm all about working smarter, not harder, and the holy grail of working less and earning more is passive income. I mean, what's more efficient that making money in your sleep? But what do most passive income experts not mention? Setting up a passive income stream can be lot of work. Like.. A LOT of work (especially when you're doing it for the first time). And although I'd still recommend putting in the work to create those passive income streams, I also want to share an easy win. There's one passive income stream every business owner should have, and it doesn't take endless hours to set it up! It's not sexy, in fact, it's incredibly boring! But it's a small way that you can earn more money, without having to put in a whole lot of extra work. The easy win? A bank account with APY terms that help you add extra cash to your bank account every single month. (I told you it wasn't gonna be sexy!!) In this episode, I'm sharing more about why I decided to switch to new banks, what I looked for, and why I ultimately landed with SoFi and BlueVine. What I Do on CEO Days

I block one full day each month to have a CEO Day. You might have heard other business owners talking about CEO days or 'stepping into your CEO role'. At some point, you may have wondered, "What does that even mean?! What does that actually look like?" Stepping into your CEO role can start with a really simple, even enjoyable, ritual: a CEO Day. Today, I'm pulling back the curtain and sharing what I do on CEO Days as a multi-passionate entrepreneur. I'm also sharing how you can quickly and easily build this ritual into your business to increase your productivity too.  What's a CEO Day? A CEO Day is a day set aside for you to reflect on what's happening in your business and make intentional, strategic decisions about how to move forward.  What to do on a CEO Day? I do three things during every CEO Day. Every business is different, so your CEO Day checklist will look slightly different too! But no matter what type of business you have, there are three things every CEO will want to do on a CEO Day: Review the previous period or month.  Preview the upcoming period or month.  Create a STRATEGIC plan for the upcoming period or month.    SHOW NOTES CONNECT WITH JADE Website Instagram Join My Email List   LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY Organize your Business Digital Course The Business Minimalist Blueprint Digital Course The Business Edit Coaching Program FREE RESOURCES FREE Task Batching Workbook FREE Weekly Review Checklist   Mentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.

What's a Business Minimalist?

From the moment I named this podcast, “The Business Minimalist” I knew that I wanted to create this episode. I mean, if anyone should answer the question, "What's a Business Minimalist", it should be me, right? But defining exactly what a Business Minimalist is (and isn’t) has taken me some time to put into words. Ultimately, becoming a Business Minimalist has more to do with what you believe than the type of business you own. You can be a Business Minimalist as a solopreneur who makes $50k per year, or you can be a Business Minimalist as a multi-passionate creative business owner with a team of 20 people. I would argue that Apple is a minimalist business, and they earned almost $167 billion dollars last year. What matters most is the mindset and the intentionality in which you approach your business decisions. That means you can become a Business Minimalist today! It's never to late to shift your strategy and find ways to do less but better in your business. I hope that this episode gives you a new perspective to consider.   SHOW NOTES   BUSINESS MINIMALIST™ BLUEPRINT WAITLIST: https://www.jadeboyd.co/course   CONNECT WITH JADE Website Instagram Join My Email List   LEVEL UP YOUR BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY Organize your Business Digital Course The Business Minimalist Blueprint Digital Course The Business Edit Coaching Program FREE RESOURCES FREE Task Batching Workbook FREE Weekly Review Checklist   Mentioned in this episode:Download the CEO Day ChecklistDownload the free CEO Day Checklist at https://www.jadeboyd.co/ceoday.
