Saturn in Astrology: Meaning and Significations

In episode 322 astrologer Diana Rose Harper joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Saturn in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. Saturn is the furthest planet that is visible to the naked eye, and so it is the last of the traditional planetary bodies in our ongoing series on the planets. In astrology Saturn is generally said to signify contraction, constraints, rejection, exclusion, time, tradition, age, that which is old, confinement, depression, structure, seriousness, authority, concrete reality, and that which is cold and slow. During the course of the episode we read through a variety of passages from ancient and modern astrologers in order to understand how astrologers have conceptualized Saturn in the past, and then we used that as a jumping off point for discussing what it means today. Uranus in Astrology: Meaning and Significations

In episode 320 astrologer Rick Levine joins Chris in the studio to talk about the meaning of the planet Uranus in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. In general, Uranus is said to signify sudden and unexpected events, revolutions, innovation, eccentricity, erraticness, disruption, unpredictability, sudden breakthroughs, quirkiness, rebelliousness, electricity, advancement through technology, rapid growth, and uncommon pursuits. Uranus was first discovered on March 13, 1781, and within a century or so astrologers had worked out most of its meanings and incorporated it into astrology. Since Uranus is the first outer planet in our series, we spend a bit of time in the beginning of the episode talking about how astrologers figured out the meaning of newly discovered planets. One access point was understanding some of the events that happened around the same time as the discovery, such as the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the culmination of the Enlightenment period. Our first attempt to record this episode was cut short when the power went out about a minute into the recording. We released a separate outtake of that power outage on YouTube, and also included a brief clip from it at the end of this episode. Jupiter in Astrology: Meaning and Significations

In episode 319 astrologer Samuel F. Reynolds joins the podcast to talk about the meaning of Jupiter in astrology, as part of our ongoing series on the significations of the planets in a birth chart. In astrology Jupiter is generally said to signify growth, expansion, wisdom, abundance, justice, freedom, religion, philosophy, faith, righteousness, success, fecundity, and aggrandizement. Jupiter is said to rule the signs of Sagittarius in Pisces, have its detriment in the opposite signs of Gemini and Virgo, and to have its exaltation in Cancer and fall in Capricorn. During the course of the episode we read through some passages from different ancient and modern astrologers in order to understand how Jupiter has been conceptualized in the astrological tradition, and use that as a jumping off point for further discussions. Some of the different astrologers we read through during the course of the episode are Vettius Valens, Abu Ma'shar, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Steven Forrest, and Richard Tarnas. Ancient Philosophy and Astrology

In episode 316 of the podcast Dr. Justin Sledge and Chris Brennan talk about the relationship between astrology, philosophy, and religion in the ancient world. Our main focus is on discussing the ways in which astrology influenced some of the different philosophical and religious schools in the Greco-Roman world, from the Hellenistic era through the time of the Roman Empire and into the early Medieval period. We also discuss questions like what was the philosophy underlying the practice of astrology in antiquity? To what extent did ancient astrologers articulate a personal philosophy? What was the purpose of practicing astrology in the ancient world? During the course of the discussion we ended up touching on topics such as what is the mechanism underlying astrology (whether it works through signs or causes), issues surrounding fate, free-will, determinism, as well as the role of various schools such as Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism, Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Christianity, and more. This was originally an interview for Justin's Esoterica YouTube channel, where he interviewed Chris based on his book Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune, but afterward we agreed to release the discussion as an episode of The Astrology Podcast simultaneously because it ended up being such a fantastic discussion that is very relevant to both of our audiences. Venus in Astrology: Meaning and Significations

In episode 315 astrologer Becca Tarnas joins the show to talk about the meaning of Venus in astrology, and how ancient and modern astrologers conceptualized it. Venus is traditionally thought to signify things like beauty, love, relationships, desire, sensuality, romance, harmony, pleasure, art, marriage, and other topics. This is the fourth installment in our series on each of the planets, where we do a deep dive into their meaning in astrology. We anchored the discussion by reading through a series of excerpts about Venus from different ancient and modern astrologers, including Vettius Valens, Abu Ma’shar, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Steven Forrest, and Richard Tarnas. We then used these passages as jumping off points for an extended discussion about some of the deeper meanings of Venus, and the role that it plays in birth chart interpretation. Movies for Astrologers: Astrology Themes in Films

In episode 314 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim talk about some movies that contain astrological themes or allegories that are relevant to astrologers. Most of the discussion focuses on films that are not directly related to astrology, but instead focus on themes that are relevant to astrologers, such as fate, free-will, and the nature of time. We also touch on some documentaries that are interesting from an astrological perspective, which focus on topics such as the nature versus nurture debate, or the issue of twins. While most of the movies discussed are ones we enjoyed, towards the end we touch on a few films that address astrology more directly, but were not necessarily particularly good. House Division Calculations in Astrology Explained

In episode 313 astrologer Luís Ribeiro joins the show to explain the astronomy and mathematics underlying the calculation of the different forms of house division in western astrology. We begin with a historical timeline showing when some of the different forms of house division were introduced, who the earliest sources are that mention them, and the time periods in which they reached the peak of their popularity. Then we go into a detailed breakdown of the astronomy and mathematics underlying how some of the most popular forms of house division are calculated. We focus in particular on the rationale for whole sign houses, equal houses, Porphyry houses, Alcabitius, Campanus, Regiomantanus, and Placidus. Our goal was not necessarily to advocate for any one system or talk about which was better to use in practice, but instead to help astrologers understand how the cusps are divided according to each approach. Towards the end of the episode we have a section talking about an astronomical instrument called an astrolabe, and showing how medieval astrologers used it in order to calculate the Ascendant, Midheaven, and other intermediate house cusps. Stelliums in Astrology: Interpreting Planetary Clusters

In episode 311 astrologers Chris Brennan and Patrick Watson discuss the concept of stelliums in astrology, and what it means to have 3 or 4 or more planets in the same sign or house in your birth chart. In the first part of the show we try to address some debates and questions about stelliums, such as how many planets need to be involved in order for you to have a stellium, what planets or points should be considered when calculating a stellium, and what is the plural form of the word stellium? After that we start looking at a bunch of example charts, in order to demonstrate what it looks like in real life when a person has a stellium of planets in a specific sign of the zodiac or in one of the twelve houses. Later we also briefly touch on the concept of stelliums in mundane astrology, such as the Capricorn stellium that happened in 2020, or other stelliums that have coincided with specific events in the past. This episode is available in both audio and video versions below, although it is probably best to watch the video version if you can, since we go through a lot of chart examples. Ancient Jewish Views on Astrology

Episode 310 features an interview with Dr. Justin Sledge about ancient Jewish views on astrology, and the complicated relationship between astrology and early Judaism. Our starting point is the geographical location of the Jewish people being situated between Mesopotamia and Egypt, which were two cultures that had very old traditions of astrology dating back to 2000 BCE. We then talk about the role that monotheism played in creating some tensions with early forms of astrology, which were often practiced in a polytheistic context. Later we get into some positive views on astrology held by Jews during the time of the Roman Empire, including the Essenes at Qumran, and a text on Lots and zodiacal releasing attributed to Abraham that was drawn on by Vettius Valens and Firmicus Maternus. We also discuss some of the early zodiac mosaics that feature prominently in synagogues in the first seven centuries CE. Eventually we touch on some of the earliest Jewish astrologers who are known by name and who made major contributions to astrology, such as Masha'allah and Abraham ibn Ezra. Justin is a professor of philosophy and religion who focuses on the western esoteric tradition, and the host of the Esoterica Youtube channel: YouTube.com/ESOTERICAchannel/ This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Mercury in Astrology: Significations and Meanings

In episode 307 astrologer Jo Gleason joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Mercury in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. This is the third installment in our series where we do a deep dive into the significations of each of the planets and their meanings in astrology. We anchored the discussion by reading through a series of excerpts about Mercury from different ancient and modern astrologers, including Vettius Valens, Abu Ma'shar, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Steven Forrest, and Richard Tarnas. We then used these passages as jumping off points for an extended discussion about some of the deeper meanings of Mercury, and the role that it plays in chart interpretation, especially in combination with other planets. In episode 304 astrologer Patrick Watson joins the show to talk about how to use an ephemeris to study the movements of the planets in astrology. An ephemeris is a book of planetary positions that lists where the planets will be in the zodiac in the past, present, or future. In the past it was used by astrologers in order to calculate birth charts by hand, but these days it is mainly useful for studying planetary transits and cycles. During the course of the episode we give a detailed introduction to the ephemeris, talk about some of the things you can do with it, and how to use it to improve your technical skills as an astrologer. For more information about Patrick check out his website: PatrickWatsonAstrology.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Ephemeris Episode Outline and Show Notes Here is an outline of some of the main points discussed in the episode: Definition: what is an ephemeris? Definition from Google/Oxford Languages: “a table or data file giving the calculated positions of a celestial object at regular intervals throughout a period.” “a book or set of such tables or files.” An ephemeris is just a listing of planetary positions. A handy way of tabulating the data. Gives you the ability to look at large compilations of data at a glance. Pronounced e·phem·er·is Ephemeris is the singular, while the plural is ephemerides. There are different types of ephemerides Astrodienst ephemeris available online for free (Swiss Ephemeris) Astro.com > All about astrology > 9000 years ephemeris Astro-Seek ephemeris: Astro-seek.com > Astro Tools > Ephemeris Tables The American Ephemeris is the printed ephemeris we use and recommend It is the most common one among US astrologers at this point. So we will focus on that and the Astrodienst ephemeris There are different varieties of the American ephemeris. Primary difference is year ranges How the main one to get at this point is the trans-century ephemeris for 1950-2050 Midnight versus noon ephemeris Midnight version starts the day at midnight Noon version starts the day at noon Difference is negligible for most planets, so either will do. I usually use the noon version so that you know where the planets are mid-day Prerequisites for using an ephemeris Memorizing the glyphs for planets and signs Memorizing the aspects ranges between planets Understanding planetary movements Ephemeris displays longitudinal movements of the planets through signs of the zodiac Along the ecliptic, which is the path of the Sun Breaking down the info shown on a page of the American Ephemeris Month, year, day All the planets and their longitudes and whether direct or retro Stations, ingresses, last aspect of Moon Moon phases and eclipses Miscellaneous astro data: asteroids, galactic center, mean node Direct versus retrograde motion American Ephemeris shades retrograde planets, which is a nice feature Seeing how fast or slow different planets move. It shows what degree and minute each planet is at at the start of the day Unless you use the noon version You have to infer based on planetary speed where it is during the day For that reason the ephemeris is pretty approximate for planets like the Moon. Astrologers used to have to calculate charts by hand based on the ephemeris Also needed an atlas for time zone changes Table of houses These days all computer programs run on a digital ephemeris Astrodienst licenses their Swiss Ephemeris for developers Astrolabe licenses the ACS Atlas licenses their atlas for developers. Book for calculating charts Simply Math: A Comprehensive Guide to Easy & Accurate Chart Calculation,  Lauran Fowks and Lynn Sellon Used to surprise me that astro programs are not real time,

Astrology Consultations: Tips for Getting the Most Out of a Reading

In episode 303 astrologers Leisa Schaim and Chris Brennan talk about some tips for getting the most out of an astrological consultation as a client, as well as some possible pitfalls to avoid. The topic for this episode was based on a question sent in by a listener named Kayley-Rae (@_kr_craft on Instagram): "I think people would love to hear how to be a good client in a natal chart consultation. How to prepare? What questions to ask? How to assist the astrologer. I feel like you’ve discussed how to perform consultations but I’m not sure if receiving a consultation has been covered." During the course of the episode we talk about how to chose an astrologer that is right for you, having appropriate expectations for the consultation, the importance of having a dialogue with the astrologer, and more. This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Show Notes Here are the show notes that summarize some of the main points in the episode: This is a good topic both for clients and for astrologers alike. Things to think about as a client Things to think about as an astrologer in terms of how you present yourself. Choosing an astrologer: Know what you’re looking for, and choose an appropriate astrologer for you. Different astrologers specialize in different things Difference topic specialties (career, relationships, etc.) Different astrological approaches (modern, Hellenistic, medieval) Different branches (natal, horary, electional, etc.) Different house systems Different zodiacs If you’re not sure, it is fine to ask questions before scheduling. Signing up/scheduling Different offerings - one consult can’t cover everything State clearly if there are any topics you’d like to focus on. Don’t say too little or too much about what you’d like to discuss Astrologer will prepare best if they know what you want to discuss Have appropriate expectations It’s one conversation vs. your whole life experience Different angles on/insights into chart Some placements can be more or less relevant at different stages of life Same placements can have multiple manifestations, esp over time Preparation: You can ask individual astrologer if any prep would be helpful Sometimes looking back at past dates Especially if you’re asking about particular thing, dates can be helpful Expect to have a dialogue Don't talk too much Don't talk too little Don't try to test the astrologer. Giving information is context for the chart Will allow the astrologer to do their job better, not just cold reading. Kind of like doctor’s appointment w/just labs and not explaining symptoms Give feedback so they know if on right track or need to change gears It’s not supposed to be a passive experience, unless pre-recorded Keep an open mind, but be honest if something doesn’t fit Let the astrologer use the approach they use Don’t ask them to switch house systems, comment on things they don’t use, etc. Sometimes you can learn more by being exposed to a new approach. Can sometimes be better to lead with questions about life topics vs. placements Sometimes preconceptions about supposed meanings get in the way You just won’t get as much out of the consult otherwise Expectations of what is and isn’t possible, how specific one can be Don’t ask lots of follow-up questions via email afterwards Different astrologers can have different policies about this If it’s very soon after and just a clarification, might be ok Otherwise it can be best to do another session, or sit with the current one for a bit Remember that you will have the recording after. Can always re-listen to it later. Most astrologers offer this. Astrologers: think about how you present yourself How can you better describe your services to answer some of these questions.

The Sun in Astrology: Meanings and Techniques

Episode 302 features a discussion with astrologer Demetra George about the meaning of the Sun in astrology, and some astrological techniques associated with it. During the course of the episode we read through some excerpts from different ancient and modern astrologers in order to see how they conceptualized what the Sun signifies in an astrological chart. We also talk about some different techniques that are used in astrology that involve the Sun, such as the solar phase cycle, different heliacal phenomena, under the beams, combustion, cazimi, sect, and more. This is a followup to episode 294 with Israel Ajose where we looked at the meaning of the Moon in astrology, as the second installment in our series on each of the planets. Demetra is the author of the book Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice: A Manual of Traditional Techniques, Volume I, which has a large section that deals with the Sun and solar phase cycle. Volume 2 of her book Ancient Astrology is going to be available for pre-order later this month! Highlights of Prescient Predictions From 2020 Astrology Forecasts

Episode 300 features a montage of highlights of prescient predictions and statements that were made during our monthly astrology forecast episodes in 2020, featuring astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan. This compilation was put together by a listener of the podcast named Alisha Park over the past few months, and after watching it recently I thought it would be a great way to celebrate the 300th episode, by looking back at some memorable moments from the forecasts over the past year. The episode starts with some highlights from the year ahead forecast that we recorded in November of 2019, and then moves into some highlights from the subsequent forecast episodes that we recorded each month over the next year. The highlight reel provides a nice review or recap of how things went astrologically last year, but also provides interesting insight into our process as astrologers, both in making predictions as well as learning some new things about astrology as we experienced them firsthand over the course of the year. My hope is that people will find it both interesting and useful to learn from, and I think it is a nice way to look back now that the podcast has reached this milestone. I would recommend watching the video version of this episode, because it lists the date when each clip was recorded in the bottom right corner, which provides important context for when certain predictions were made. There are no cues for the dates and the transitions in the audio version of this episode. Thanks to all of the listeners and patrons who have helped us get to 300 episodes! Revisiting the Considerations Before Judgement in Horary Astrology

Episode 298 features a followup discussion with astrologer Rob Bailey about the considerations before judgement, and the role they play in horary astrology. This is a followup to episode 296 where I talked with Sue Ward about the considerations before judgement in the work of the 17th century astrologer William Lilly. Even though the episode with Sue was really comprehensive, I had done so much research into the considerations in preparation for that interview that I felt like there were still some additional things to be said. So the next day after recording the interview with Sue I sat down and recorded a discussion with Rob, which was originally going to be a bonus episode of the Casual Astrology Podcast only available to patrons, but it went so well that I decided to release it to the public. The discussion with Rob ended up being a pretty wide-ranging two-hour discussion where we start by talking about an actual horary chart that Rob cast for Leisa a couple of years ago, and how well it described the focus of the question. We then used that to launch into an exploration of what the fundamental meaning of the considerations were in Lilly and other traditional astrologers, in establishing the rootedness or radicality of questions, and why this was important to some astrologers. During the course of the discussion we touched on a number of other topics such as consultation charts or thought interpretation, who were Lilly's sources for some of the considerations, and whether you can use whole sign houses for horary. We also spent a bit of time discussing Lilly's lesser known second treatment of the considerations, which appears later in book 2 of Christian Astrology combined with a set of aphorisms, and the relationship between considerations and aphorisms. For more information about Rob see his website: OldSchoolAstrology.com Or follow him on Twitter: @oldschoolastro This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Aphorisms and Considerations Images Here are some images of the 43 aphorisms that Lilly gives later in Christian Astrology when he reiterates some of the considerations before judgement and mixes them in with other aphorisms for judging horary questions. - - Please see the image gallery in episode 296 for the original set of considerations before judgement from earlier in Christian Astrology. The Considerations Before Judgement with Sue Ward

Episode 296 features an interview with astrologer Sue Ward about the considerations before judgement in horary astrology. The considerations before judgement are a set of aphorisms that were first outlined in the 17th century by William Lilly in his book Christian Astrology. Lilly introduces them as a set of considerations for answering horary questions and determining whether the question is "radical" or has a strong foundation. The considerations were passed along in later authors, and by the mid-20th century became a set of "strictures" that were believed to indicate whether a horary chart could be read at all or should be rejected outright. In the 1980s there was a revival of interest in the practice of horary astrology, and Lilly's work in particular, due to the reprinting of Christian Astrology in 1985. By 1992 some astrologers such as Maurice McCann noted that Lilly still read horary questions where one or more of the considerations were present, based on the chart examples in Christian Astrology. This raised the question of what the considerations were really supposed to be used for, and what their value was in interpreting horary charts, if any. Sue Ward wrote a series of influential articles on the considerations starting in 1992, in which she explored their purpose and presented a new take on their meaning. During the course of this she made a number of discoveries, including a notable observation about the working definition of void of course that Lilly used in practice. In this interview we set out to talk about Sue's work on the considerations before judgement, and to try to place it within the historical context of the revival of traditional horary astrology in the 1980s and 90s. Queen Buran, Astrologer in 9th Century Baghdad

Episode 295 features an interview with Ali A Olomi about the 9th century Queen Buran, who is the first woman we know of by name that practiced astrology. Previously in episode 86 I discussed historical references to women practicing astrology as early as the 1st century CE, and discussed the 5th century philosopher Hypatia as one possible candidate for earliest figure. In this episode we focus on the famous Queen Buran, who lived in Baghdad in the 9th century, and talk about how she is a much more reliable candidate for earliest woman in history who likely had training as an astrologer and used it in practice. Buran was the wife of the Caliph Al-Ma'mun, who reigned from 813–833, during the early Islamic Golden Age. Their wedding was so extravagant that it became known as something of a legend for centuries. Buran came from a notable family line of astrologers, and her great-grandfather Nawbakht al-Farisi was the head of a group of astrologers that selected the electional chart for the founding Baghdad. A legend survives about a prediction that Buran herself made using astrology that helped to avert an assassination attempt on the Caliph al-Mu’tasim. We spent a good deal of the episode contextualizing Buran's life in 9th century Baghdad, discussing the history of the Persian and Arabic astrological traditions in the early medieval period, and talking about some of the notable astrologers that were contemporaries of Buran such as Masha'allah, Sahl ibn Bishr, and Abu Ma'shar. Ali is a historian of the Middle East and Islam, who focuses in particular on esotericism, astrology, and folklore. The Moon in Astrology: Meanings and Uses

Episode 294 features a discussion with astrologer Israel Ajose about the meaning of the Moon in astrology, and some different techniques that incorporate the Moon in the western astrological tradition. This is the first in a series of new episodes on the significations of each of the planets, and I decided to start with the Moon because it is the closest celestial body to Earth. In order to ground the episode in the astrological tradition we read through several different passages from ancient and modern astrologers to see how they described the meaning of the Moon in astrology. We then used this as a jumping off point for further discussions, and in order to look at some of the different techniques that use the Moon as their focal point in western astrology. The passages that we read from different astrologers include Vettius Valens, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Robert Hand, Richard Tarnas, and Demetra George. Israel Ajose is a practicing astrologer from the UK, and is the President of the Astrological Lodge of London, which is the oldest astrological society in the English-speaking world, having been founded in 1915 by Alan and Bessie Leo. Israel previously appeared on episode 213 of The Astrology Podcast where I interviewed him about the Astrological Lodge in person while on a trip to Europe. Defining the Void of Course Moon

Episode 292 features a discussion between astrologers Yasmin Boland and Chris Brennan about the three different ways of defining what it means for the Moon to be void of course in astrology. This discussion is largely based on definition of void of course that I wrote for The Astrology Dictionary back in 2012, where I noted that there are three different ways that the Moon is defined as being void of course in the western astrological tradition. Yasmin specializes in the astrology of the Moon in particular, and wrote a popular astrology book in 2016 titled Moonology, and asked to record a discussion with me about the different ways that void of course is defined. I agreed as long as I could also release it as an episode of The Astrology Podcast, and it ended up being a pretty good discussion not just about the void of course Moon, but also the transmission of astrology and how astrologers define and receive different concepts. You can find out more about Yasmin on her website: Moonology.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Tarot and Astrology as Forms of Divination

Episode 291 features an interview with T. Susan Chang about some of the parallels between astrology and tarot cards as forms of divination. Susan is a professional tarot card reader, and the purpose of this discussion was to explore some of the ways that astrology is similar to tarot as a form of divination, versus some of the ways that it is different. We tried to answer some questions like: how can tarot inform our understanding of what astrology is as a phenomenon? What makes divination divination? What are some different types of divination? What models of reality support the practice? In some ways this was a nice followup to episode 53 of the podcast with Geoffrey Cornelius on The Moment of Astrology, where we talked about whether astrology is a form of divination or a natural science. Susan is the co-host the Fortune's Wheelhouse esoteric tarot podcast, as well as the author of the new book 36 Secrets: A Decanic Journey Through the Minor Arcana of the Tarot. The Early History and Meanings of the Nodes in Astrology

In episode 290 astrologer Ronnie Gale Dreyer joins the show to talk about the early history and meanings of the nodes in astrology, both in the western and Indian astrological traditions. As discussed in episode 127, in the late 20th and early 21st century the nodes came to be associated with one's past and future life in modern western astrology, but these associations are absent from the tradition if you look back more than a century or so. The premise of this discussion, then, is what did the nodes mean in the older traditions of astrology if they didn't have to do with past lives? Ronnie is the author of the book Vedic Astrology: A Guide to the Fundamentals of Jyotish, and she is also a Sanskrit scholar who is currently working on a translation of a 4th century Indian text on applying astrology to the lives of women. Together we set out to explore and discuss the early history of the nodes in eastern and western astrology. You can find out more information about Ronnie on her website: RonnieDreyer.com The painting featured in the cover art for this episode is by astrologer Shu Yap, and depicts the Samudra Manthan story, which we mention at one point in this episode as being connected to Hindu legends surrounding the origins of the nodes. Explaining Astrology to Non-Astrologers

Episode 288 features a discussion where an astrologer tries to explain what astrology is about to two people who are curious about the subject but somewhat skeptical. Last week Ian and Shaye from the comedy podcast Camp ReEducation reached out to me to see if I would be on their show, where they do interviews with people from different fields and try to familiarize themselves with new topics and reexamine their preconceptions. I agreed to do it as long as I could also release the recording as an episode of my podcast, and it ended up being a good discussion about trying to figure out how to explain astrology to a couple of non-astrologers who are skeptical about the subject but willing to listen and ask questions. Figuring out how to communicate what astrologers do to the general public has always been one of my interests, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to try doing that with them, and I think it ended up being a great discussion. Reception: A Mitigating Condition in Birth Charts

Episode 287 features a lecture by Chris Brennan on the concept of reception in traditional astrology, and how it can be used as a powerful mitigating factor in birth chart interpretation. Broadly speaking, reception occurs when one planet is placed in a sign ruled by another planet, and the ruler of the sign aspects the guest planet. Since the signs of the zodiac were originally conceptualized as the homes or dwelling places of the planets, reception was conceptualized as what happens when a host planet welcomes and supports guests staying in its home. Medieval astrologers often treated reception as a powerful mitigating factor, which could make aspects from benefics even more positive, or alternatively make difficult aspects from malefics more constructive. In the first part of the lecture I talk about the history and philosophy behind this concept, while in the second half I present a bunch of contemporary chart examples to demonstrate how the technique works in practice. Co-Star and the Making of a Popular Astrology App

Episode 286 features an interview with astrologer Banu Guler about the popular astrology app that she founded called Co-Star. Co-Star is an app for iPhone and Android that calculates your birth chart and provides some basic interpretations, as well as daily transit notifications. The app was launched in late 2017, and quickly became one of the most popular astrology apps in the world, with Co-Star estimating that approximately 20% of young people in the US have downloaded the app. Despite its popularity, the app has also been the subject of criticism within the astrological community, for things ranging from the appropriateness of certain delineations, to questions about the extent to which astrologers were involved in its creation. Last month Banu did an impromptu Ask Me Anything thread on the astrology page on Reddit, to answer some questions about the app. I myself noticed the AMA and asked some questions, and I was impressed enough with the answers that I asked Banu if she wanted to come on the podcast to talk about the history of the app and address some of the controversies. It ended up being a really interesting two-hour conversation where we talked about a range of different topics. Saturn Return in Capricorn Retrospective

In episode 283 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim review some stories that were sent in by listeners about their recent Saturn return in Capricorn, and look at their birth charts to see what lessons can be learned from them. Saturn first moved back into Capricorn in December of 2017, and it is just getting ready to complete its transit through that sign of the zodiac this month, and it will leave Capricorn and move into Aquarius on December 17. In the first 30 minutes of the episode we spend some time reviewing our basic approach to interpreting Saturn returns and determining what they will coincide with in a person's life. Then we spend the rest of the episode going through a bunch of listener-submitted stories describing what happened in their lives over the past three years during their Saturn return. The Astrology of Bitcoin

Episode 282 features an interview with astrologer Robert Weinstein about his work using astrology to study fluctuations in the value of the cryptocurrency called Bitcoin. Robert wrote an article in The Mountain Astrologer magazine last year on the astrology of Bitcoin, and originally approached me last summer about doing an episode on the topic, although I wasn't quite ready at that point. My interest in the topic was renewed recently though when the value of Bitcoin hit a new all time high on November 30, which happened to coincide with a lunar eclipse in Gemini that we talked about in our astrology forecast last month. So we decided to sit down yesterday and record a sweeping three-hour discussion on the connections between astrology and Bitcoin, and some of the studies Robert has done on it. We spend a large part of the first hour just talking about what Bitcoin is and how it originated, in order to introduce it to a beginner audience, and then in the second and third hours we get more into the birth chart of Bitcoin, and review some past instances where price fluctuations have coincided with transits to the Bitcoin chart. Eventually we also talk a little bit about the future, and some of the changes expected in currencies with Uranus moving through Taurus, as well as some of the long term transits for the chart of Bitcoin in general. For more information about Robert check out his website: SourcePointAstrology.com You can also follow him on Twitter: @AstroCryptoGuru This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. An Overview of the History of Western Astrology

Episode 280 features a lecture by astrologer Chris Brennan where he gives an overview of the history and transmission of western astrology over the past 4,000 years. The talk begins with the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian astrological traditions, and then traces the development of astrology through the Hellenistic, Medieval, Renaissance, and modern periods. This is based on a lecture that Chris has been giving at conferences since 2006 about how Uranus-Neptune conjunctions have historically coincided with periods in which there is a major transmission and revival of older forms of astrology, which are then synthesized with whatever the prevailing paradigm is at the time. Part of the purpose of the talk is to contextualize some of the current trends in our own time period, and the recent revival of older forms of astrology. Chris recently appeared on The Strology Show podcast with Kirah Tabourn to talk about the recent revival of traditional astrology in modern times, and that episode would be great to watch after this episode of The Astrology Podcast if you would like some more information about the traditional revival. Post-2020 US Presidential Election Astrology Analysis and Reflections

In episode 278 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim look back at the astrology of the 2020 US presidential election, and reflect on what we learned as astrologers, now that the outcome is known. In the first part of the episode we discuss the much-anticipated Mercury retrograde period, which stationed direct on election day, and coincided with delays in determining the outcome of the election. Then we review some technical factors in the birth charts of the candidates that worked in showing the outcome, and discuss what we learned from some of the different methods that astrologers employed. Later we discuss a few other topics such as the role of bias and the media sources an astrologer draws on to provide them with context, the need for weighting or ranking surveys of astrological predictions, and then also some reflections on the nature of astrological prediction. Mercury Retrograde and What it Means in Astrology

In episode 276 astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo joins the show to talk about Mercury retrograde and what it means in astrology. Mercury retrograde periods occur when the planet Mercury begins moving backwards in the zodiac for about three weeks every few months. Astrologers generally associate Mercury retrograde periods with miscommunication, delays, technological snafus, and other issues in the areas associated with Mercury. During the course of the show we talk about the significations of Mercury, the astronomy of Mercury retrograde periods, shadow periods, and share some stories about how we have seen these periods manifest in the past. Astrologers have been talking about Mercury retrograde a lot recently since one is happening in the three weeks leading up to election day in the US on November 3, and it seemed timely to talk about the phenomenon in general, as well as how it might relate to the election. Jessica recently launched Zodiac the Vote, which is encouraging people to get out and vote, and providing guides to make it easier to avoid possible Mercury retro snafus: ZodiacTheVote.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Astrological Generations: Saturn Signs of Millennials

In episode 275 astrologer Kirah Tabourn joins the show to talk about the concept of dividing groups into of people into generations astrologically, and looking at the different sub-generations of millennials based on their Saturn sign. At the start of discussion we talk about how modern astrologers divide different demographic cohorts based on what sign of the zodiac Pluto was in when they were born, such as the Baby Boomer generation that tended to coincide with Pluto in Leo. Later we focus on the millennial generation in particular, which tend to have Pluto in Scorpio, and discuss how it can be divided into sub-generations based on the sign that Saturn is located in. This discussion is based on a series of articles that Kirah wrote on her blog last summer on the Saturn signs of millennials. Sect in Astrology: Day and Night Charts

In episode 274 of the podcast Chris Brennan gives a detailed overview of the concept of sect in astrology, which is the difference between day and night birth charts. Sect is a fundamental concept that was used in Hellenistic astrology, but it has only been recovered by contemporary astrologers over the past 30 years through translations of ancient texts. The purpose of this talk is to give a broad introduction to sect, first by establishing how pervasive the concept is in ancient astrology, and then to demonstrate how it works in practice through chart examples. This episode was recorded as a live stream with an audience of patrons who support the podcast through our page on Patreon each month: https://www.patreon.com/astrologypodcast To learn more about sect, check out Chris' book on Hellenistic astrology, or his online course on ancient astrology.
