Spoek Mathambo/Nthato Mokgata is a musician and filmmaker. He's a master of collaboration, with roots tracing all the way back to the seminal The Fantastic Kill with Watkin Tudor Jones and Sibot, which lead to projects like Sweat.X, Playdoe, Moleke Mbembe, Fantasma, Batuk, and his most recent collaborations with Laliboi. I'm definitely leaving some stuff out, and that's not even to mention his personal catalogue of albums, but the point is that the man has kept himself busy. Not just with making music. In 2014, he worked on a documentary called Future Sound of Mzansi that is, to this day, one of the best explorations of South African electronic music. He's worked on a number of documentaries before and since, and has delved into a number of facets of filmmaking. Most recently, he was a writer and director for the "Surf Sangoma" episode of Disney's Kizazi Moto animated anthology series. We get into all of the above as well as learn about some of the pitfalls of working with international labels, explore the benefits and hurdles of modern music distribution, and discuss why he feels like there are still musical magic tricks from SA music history that haven't been explored fully. Takunda Bimha is the festival director of the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival and the founder of Podium, a comedy agency that helped boost the careers of some of South Africa's best comedians. We hear how Kagiso Lediga took a chance on him as a producer on the Pure Monate Show and how that opened his eyes to the potential of South African comedy. He saw the role he could play behind the scenes to help it reach that potential which is what lead to him starting the agency. King Shaft is a director, producer, and writer. He co-directed "1960" which opened this year's Durban International Film Festival and won the award for Best South African Feature Film at the fest. We chatted the morning after the opening where the elated director shared his joy over the achievement, especially since project faced a number of issues and was mostly fuelled over the finish line by passion. Shaft shares how budget limitations actually allowed them to focus more on the human stories they told rather than getting distracted by big action scenes. We met up to discuss her feature film "Valley of a Thousand Hills" which is part of this year's Durban International Film Festival. It's a film she's incredibly proud of as it's taken nearly 20 years in the industry to get here. Bonie shares how her early experiences in the film industry lead to her losing her car and house, and how her tenacity carried her through the tough times. Since then, she's produced and directed a plethora of films for Mzansi Magic, written for Imbewu, and attended Cannes three times. Ali Heath is a bassist and a film lecturer. The South African music scene has lost a beautiful soul. Jaedon Daniel has passed on. It's a heartbreaking shock to everyone who knew him. Whan Zulu is a film producer, entrepreneur, and the first Black South African to have a pro model skateboard. In 2002, at the age of 18, Whan became a pro skater. At 38, he runs a production company called Pitch Black Post. We reminisce over youths spent on boards and discuss how the skate scene has evolved for the better over the years. Whan shares how his skating career fortuitously lead him to editing and how that lead to him running his own production company. This is his third attempt at entrepreneurship and it's finally working out the way he's hoped. Desire Marea is someone who I consider to be a once-in-a-generation artist. While he's probably best known as a musician, Desire's creativity knows no bounds. That being said, while Desire oozes a calm confidence, they open up about struggling with imposter syndrome.
