Ep 125 - Kienböck’s Disease: “I Have a Client Who . . .” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner

What happens when a bone that forms a major pivot point in the wrist falls apart? A friend of a massage therapist is looking for some self-massage ideas as she recovers from a pioneering surgery on her wrist to repair damage from a rare and painful condition called Kienböck’s disease. Or lunatomalacia. Or avascular necrosis of the lunate. Kienböck’s disease? What is it? And why does it lead to wrist reconstruction surgery? And will massage therapy make this worse?   Sponsors:             Anatomy Trains: www.anatomytrains.com               Books of Discovery: https://booksofdiscovery.com       Host Bio:                Ruth Werner is a former massage therapist, a writer, and an NCBTMB-approved continuing education provider. Ep 116 - Low-Back Pain with Dr. Ben Benjamin

Low-back pain is certainly one of the, if not the most, pressing issues practitioners will face when working with clientele. More than 70 million people visit doctors each year with low-back pain, so as an MT, knowing the what and how of working with this population can be valuable. Dr. Ben Benjamin joins the podcast to talk about his personal experience with low-back pain, common myths and misconceptions surrounding this injury, the most common causes, how to prevent low-back pain through exercise and diet, and knowing when hands-on treatment is appropriate. Dr. Benjamin relays the value of a health history intake, hands-on tests for assessment, and when to refer out.   Ben Benjamin, PhD in sports medicine, has been practicing massage since 1963 and has been nationally recognized for his contributions to massage therapy, receiving an induction into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame in 2010. With his years of experience as a therapist, educator, and author, Dr. Benjamin has been regarded as a voice of authority in the muscular therapy field. He was the founder and president of the Muscular Therapy Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which began in 1974. Shortly after the Muscular Therapy Institute opened, Dr. Benjamin enhanced his practice by studying under Dr. James Cyriax, widely known for his pioneering work in orthopedic medicine. He has also integrated Aaron Mattes’ Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) techniques into his therapy. With a passion for helping individuals cope with and overcome pain, Dr. Benjamin has been lecturing internationally for more than four decades and written countless articles in publications such as Massage & Bodywork magazine. Dr. Benjamin is also the author of several works referenced by those educators and students in the field, such as Listen to Your Pain, Are You Tense?, Exercise Without Injury, and co-author of The Ethics of Touch and Conversation Transformation. For more information, visit benjamininstitute.com.   Resources from the author:   “Keeping Clients Safe, Part One: How to Avoid Client Injuries,” Massage & Bodywork magazine, May/June 2021, page 64.    “Clients Crossing Boundaries in the Treatment Room,” Massage & Bodywork magazine, March/April 2020, page 54.    Sponsors:     Anatomy Trains: www.anatomytrains.com     CBD Clinic: www.cbdclinic.co             Handspring Publishing: www.handspringpublishing.com    Pain the App: https://appadvice.com/app/pain-in-the-app/1473476636    (se) Connect: https://network.structuralelements.com       Anatomy Trains is a global leader in online anatomy education and also provides in-classroom certification programs for structural integration in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, and China, as well as fresh-tissue cadaver dissection labs and weekend courses. Ep 111 - A Natural Intuitive with Cyndi Dale

What’s it like being an intuitive? Do we all possess these abilities? “It’s a matter of tuning in and paying attention,” guest Cyndi Dale says. Dale, the author of more than 20 books on energy work, empathy, and clairvoyance, joins the podcast to talk about discovering her gifts, countering skeptics, the four ways people access their abilities, the difference between physical energy and subtle energy, and scope of practice.   Cyndi Dale is an internationally renowned author, speaker, intuitive healer, and business consultant. Her groundbreaking books on chakras and intuition include The Subtle Body: An Encyclopedia of Your Energetic Anatomy; Energy Healing for Trauma, Stress & Chronic Illnesses; Energy Wellness for Your Pets; Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Chakras; and Awaken Clairvoyant Energy. Cyndi, who’s been a natural intuitive since she was young, offers these gifts to clients and groups seeking to make real and positive change. Her passion includes helping people open their “essential energy”—the powers and perspectives unique to them. She works with thousands of individuals a year, in the United States and internationally. She believes that once an individual understands their own essence, they can tap into the energies of, and beyond, the world, joining a community of like-minded people who want to better themselves and others. Cyndi has presented seminars and workshops in Russia, England, Wales, Amsterdam, Iceland, and Scotland, and has led groups across South and Central America and into Africa. Her training encompasses shamanism and healing, and has taken her to the Peruvian, Belizean, Hawaiian, and Costa Rican jungles, the Moroccan sands, the Venezuelan savannahs, and the glaciers of Iceland. Her two favorite workshops to lead are her Apprenticeship Program, a 9-month exploration of intuitive and healing powers and The Subtle Body Certificate Program, led through Normandale College. She seeks to unify the world’s most vital spiritual messages, encouraging understanding and community among all peoples. Cyndi works with clients and groups on a daily basis, serving as an intuitive coach and energy healer. Clients are commonly referred by professionals, including psychiatrists, medical doctors, and therapists. She continues to hone her ability to help people discover their essential selves so they can make healthy and positive changes in their lives.   This podcast sponsored by:            Anatomy Trains: www.anatomytrains.com             CBD Clinic: www.cbdclinic.co             (se) Connect: https://network.structuralelements.com                Anatomy Trains is a global leader in online anatomy education and also provides in-classroom certification programs for structural integration in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, and China, as well as fresh-tissue cadaver dissection labs and weekend courses. Ep 104 - Social Media: from Beginners to the Advanced with Morgan Palmer

Morgan Palmer, ABMP’s digital marketing coordinator, tells us how to use social media as an effective marketing tool for your practices. We break this podcast down into three sections: beginners [2:54], intermediate [11:48], advanced [15:24]. Morgan tackles the hard questions: Should you have two separate accounts: personal vs. business? What’s the number one site to be on? How often should you post? What’s the difference between content creation and content curation? How should you use hashtags? What’s content planning? Should you create a “story” or post? Should you experiment with newer platform, like TikTok and Clubhouse? And how do you create graphics? We close with questions on etiquette.   Morgan is the digital marketing coordinator for ABMP. She received her degree from St. Edward’s University in Digital Media Management and has since become a full-time marketing geek. As a millennial in the field, she grew up alongside the growth of social media and jokes that it is her second language.   Resources:   Hooper, Lydia. “Top 8 Canva Alternatives for Infographics.” February 8, 2021. https://venngage.com/blog/canva-alternatives   Verma, Pooja. “21 Free Canva Alternatives with Better Template and Design Features.” Last modified April 22, 2021. Ep 101 - When You See a Doorway, Walk Through It with Diane Matkowski

Diane Matkowski, the Massage Mentor, has had many revelatory moments in her life: from getting her first massage, to studying under a hands-on mentor, to making the leap of faith to start her own business. She was terrified. But she took comfort in the phrase from one of her clients: “When you see a doorway, Diane, walk through it.” Diane embraces being uncomfortable and, as such, has been successful in her work—she hasn’t taken a paycheck from anything other than her independent massage business since 1996. We discuss her successes (and failures), her COVID protocols that will stick long after the pandemic is over, and what’s it like being audited by the IRS. What’s the art of massage, according to Diane? Patience, persistence, and perseverance. Diane Matkowski was accredited by The Owens Institute of Massage and The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and has an associate’s degree in business administration. She has been practicing therapeutic massage for more than 25 years. Diane began her business, Freedom Massage, with only six clients. Presently, more than 12,000 clients have received therapeutic massage within the walls of her business. She moderates a closed group for massage therapists only on Facebook called The Massage Mentor Closed Group and is co-founder of the newly launched The Massage Mentor Institute. In 2010, she was the official massage practitioner for the women’s professional soccer team, the Philadelphia Independence. Ep 100 - Mercy, it’s MRSA! “I Have a Client Who . . .” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner

A client with a complex health history reveals he has recently been exposed to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. During his session, his massage therapist finds lots of little scabs on his body—yikes! Good news: this is not nearly so scary as it seems. The hygienic practices we already use provide us with good protection from MRSA colonization, but that needs to happen on purpose, and not by accident. Ep 96 - “I am enough”: Addressing Anxiety with Amanda Huggins

In part one of this conversation, Amanda Huggins defines anxiety and describes her own challenge to integrate the mental, physical, and spiritual in her personal life. She helps us get to the emotions underneath the umbrella term anxiety—fear, guilt, imposter syndrome—and lets us know the difference between the stories we tell ourselves (unpacking how beliefs began) and our truths. We conclude with some affirmation practices, the power of grounding, and valuing our worth.   Amanda Huggins is a respected anxiety and mindfulness coach, certified yoga instructor, brand ambassador, writer, and keynote speaker. After successfully spending nearly a decade in the startup space as a content and communications specialist, Amanda broke past her fears to follow her calling for helping people break past their internal barriers of self-worth, fear, and anxiety. Ep 89 - Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow with Dr. Joe Muscolino

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are musculoskeletal pathologies hallmarked by elbow pain. However, even though these conditions cause elbow pain, they are not conditions of the actual elbow joint; rather they are overuse syndromes of the musculature of the hand and/or fingers. And these conditions aren’t just relegated to those participating in these two sports. These overuse injuries can be caused by actions as simple as gripping your steering wheel, a pen, or your cell phone too tightly. Listen in as Dr. Muscolino describes causes and approaches to this condition, and we hear how both he and co-host Darren Buford describe living with these conditions.   Dr. Muscolino has been a manual and movement therapy educator for more than 30 years. He is the author of The Muscular System Manual; The Muscle and Bone Palpation Manual with Trigger Points, Referral Patterns, and Stretching; and Kinesiology. He teaches continuing education workshops around the world, including a certification in Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy, and has created LearnMuscles Continuing Education, a video streaming subscription service for manual and movement professionals, with seven new video lessons added each week. And he has created Muscle Anatomy Master Class, the most comprehensive and detailed muscle anatomy online class in the world, with each muscle taught in five distinct video lessons. Ep 86 - Telephone Tag: Voicemail Dos and Don’ts

Are you using your voicemail in a professional manner? Is your voicemail always full, allowing no one else to get through? Do you even have a voicemail message, or is there just a lonely “beep”? Having made thousands of calls to practitioners over the years and often hearing no professional connection to their practices, co-hosts Kristin Coverly and Darren Buford discuss why having a professional voicemail message is the gateway to your business. Ep 85 - Fem-Pop Follow-Up, “I Have a Client Who …” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner

In episode 77, from February 19, 2021, a client with “critical limb ischemia” wants massage while he awaits corrective surgery for an occluded artery. So, we talked about peripheral artery disease and talked about the risks and reasons to be cautious in this situation. In this follow-up episode, we find the client was in better shape than I thought, and the massage therapist shares her treatment choices and rationales for a really hopeful outcome. This is yet another example of how important it is to treat the person, not the diagnosis.   This podcast sponsored by:        Books of Discovery: www.booksofdiscovery.com       Coaching the Body: www.coachingthebody.com     Anatomy Trains: www.anatomytrains.com         Host:        Ruth Werner: www.ruthwerner.com         Resources from Episode 77:    Jackson, M. Ep 76 - Learning by Being a Client with Cindy Williams

Being a client makes you a better therapist. Besides the obvious self-care benefits, it heightens your awareness of good bodywork and the specifics that make or break a session. Listen as Cindy Williams puts on her professional educator hat and details moments from a challenging bodywork session where she was the client and her suggestions for improvement.   Cindy has spent the last 20 years in private practice, and as a school instructor, administrator, curriculum developer, and mentor. In 2010, she joined the ABMP Education Team as a school liaison, then continued her work as a content writer and facilitator for ABMP’s Instructors on the Front Lines program. She currently works as a freelance educational content writer. Combining her training in massage and polarity therapies with her extensive background as a yoga practitioner and instructor, she loves teaching how the body operates holistically and how each component of the individual must be addressed in order to create change. Cindy also writes the Back to Basics column for Massage & Bodywork magazine.   Resources:   “SOAP Charting: The Lowdown on the Importance of Clinical Recordkeeping,” by Cindy Williams, January/February 2021, page 36,   This episode sponsored by:     Color Up, www.colorupco.com    Anatomy Trains, www.anatomytrains.com   About Color Up: Color Up makes 100% natural, cruelty free, and small batch hemp-derived CBD products intended to balance the mind, body, and spirit. “Color Up” describes our mission, our intention, and our values.
