Episode 195: Melodic Fragments Part 1
This week's episode introduces us to a brand new topic that I think will help your playing tremendously. Melodic fragments are any grouping of a given number of notes to focus your melodic intent and keep you from meandering through a solo. We start the series with a 3 note fragment based on 2 different scale segments. The goal here is to develop fluency and flexibility using these over a blues so we can later get more complicated and creative. Enjoy the episode and make sure to practice the worksheet! Episode 194: Tune of the Month: Minor Blues
This culminates our series on reading with an etude based around the minor blues. We tried to bring together everything we talked about in the last 3 episodes and implement it, providing for a very tough exercise! If you really want to go the extra mile, we have also written a version of the same etude up a half step. Enjoy the episode and good luck! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 193: Reading: Part 3
This week continues our series on reading and becoming a more well rounded musician. Remember, you will get a lot more gigs if you can read at a high level! This week brings us to syncopation. We have already done episodes on tough keys and sub-division, now it's time to take a look at one of the most important aspects of jazz: having a good handle on playing off the beat. Syncopation is a defining characteristic of jazz and we need to be able to land on each and every part of the beat. These exercises will challenge you, no doubt about that, but if you keep at it and follow through, you will see your reading skills increase tremendously through these exercises. Enjoy! Episode 192: Reading: Part 2
Welcome back to our second episode in the new year. This week we continue our work on reading with a great rhythmic exercise to test your flexibility and attention to sub-division. When reading and improvising, playing sub-divisions of beats correctly and accurately is very important to our overall sound. This exercise is meant to take the same idea and put it through 8th notes, triplets, and 16th notes all designed to prepare you for anything that's thrown your way. Enjoy and make sure to grab the PDF for this episode, it's an important skill! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 191: Reading: Part 1
Happy New Year everyone! This year is going to kick off with our series on reading. We don't typically think about reading as an essential skill for improvisation, however, it is an essential skill for being a complete musician, which I think all of us strive for. This month will provide you with some difficult exercises that will hopefully bring you to the next level and allow you to read like a true ninja. This week is all about enharmonics and becoming comfortable reading in uncomfortable flat or sharp keys (depending on what instrument you play). Enjoy the episode and Happy New Year once again! Episode 189: Playing Tensions in Context Part 3
This week features yet another episode about playing tensions in context. This week we move on to the minor-seventh chord and discover some great structures we can use to work in the 9th, 11th and 13th to these chords. Hopefully, you are starting to understand what super-imposing does for your playing. This is a very powerful strategy to come up with new sounds over chords you have been playing forever. Episode 188: Playing Tensions In Context Part 2
This weeks continues our look at playing tension notes in context and also continues our look at the #11. This episode, we look at the #11 in terms of a dominant seventh chord. This provides us with some brand new opportunities to use different structures. We focus on building a triad off the flatted seventh, a minor-major arpeggio off the fifth, and a half diminished chord based off the #11. Enjoy the episode and have fun with this material! Playing Tensions in Context Part 1
This week we are going to start another month long series all about playing tensions in context. This idea came from a post in the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community FB group and thanks to Kris for bringing this topic to my attention. This week is all about using the #11 over a major seventh chord and the different structures we can use to frame this note. There are a plethora of opportunities here and I think this will benefit anyone who is starting to use more interesting notes and stretching themselves beyond just diatonic playing. Enjoy! Episode 185: Tune of the Month: Last Night on the Back Porch
This week we culminate our work for the month by looking at one of my favorite jazz tunes, Last Night on the Back Porch. This tune is simple and requires us to understand some of the most basic and important chord movements that occur so frequently in jazz. I'm hoping that the work you've done so far this month will prepare you to finally put it all together and handle this tune nicely. I have prepared our usual etude for you with some if the concepts covered and hope you enjoy this month's episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 184: Shaye Cohn’s Trumpet Masterclass
We are back with another Lick of the Month Episode! This time around, I have transcribed an entire chorus of solo for you so we can look at a complete statement instead of a lick. We are featuring the playing of the amazing New Orlean's Trumpeter, Shaye Cohn of Tuba Skinny. Her playing over Last Night on the Back porch is impeccable and will really open your ears to some cool devices. Shaye uses triplets in an extremely cool fashion along with, chromatic approaches and the clearest phrasing I have heard in quite some time. Enjoy the episode! The IV to iv Progression
This week we continue building toward our tune of the month episode by looking at a very common harmonic device used in many tunes. The IV to iv progression appears very often toward the end of progressions and we need to be able to handle this important movement as improvisers. In this episode we talk about what scale to use and give you some example phrases to highlight the important difference between the major and minor. Enjoy the episode! Episode 182: Major Chords Without a 7th
We concentrate a lot on 7ths when it comes to playing jazz. But what do we do when we see a major chord that has no 7th?? This is a tricky thing for us improvisers in certain cases. I know that I had trouble doing this before some of my teachers clarified it for me. This week we take a look at 3 different phrases and how we can adapt them to major triads or major 6th chords. This month is going to be themed and all leading toward a culmination with our tune of the month episode. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 181: Tune of the Month: Ornithology
This month's tune of the month and etude are a carry over from last week's episode where we talked about a phrase from the great Charlie Parker composition, Ornithology. In this episode, we are going to explore a very specific melodic device based on triplets and surrounding chord tones. We are using this particular set of changes because it puts us in many different keys and situations where we need to be flexible. This is a great facet of a complete musician, flexibility, and this week's episode will put us through our paces. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 180: Sourcing Vocabulary From Melodies
This week continues our wildly popular Lick of the Month Series. This month, we are taking things in a different direction. We all look toward transcriptions and recordings to get vocabulary for our own playing. This is because it's a fantastic way to study the masters and let them guide us through what sounds great over chord progressions. But have you ever used a melody that you really like to develop some vocabulary? It may be something that we all overlook as a non-traditional place to get some really cool material for our solos. This week , we take a look at Charlie Parker's Ornithology (I realize I misspoke in the episode and called it Anthropology...oops!) , borrow some of his genius, then slightly tweak it into something we can use in many situations. Episode 178: Voice Leading Exercises Part 3
This week continues our series on voice leading and doing something that many of you will find uncomfortable: SINGING! We continue to make the kines more difficult by turning our half notes into quarter notes. What you will notice, however, is the basic direction and voice leading of the line stays the same throughout. This follows logic that we perform a lot on this show, which is slowly increasing the difficulty of something until it is sounding amazing. One more episode in this series next week, then we move on to something else. Enjoy this week's podcast! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 177: Tune of the Month: I Mean You
This month we take a look at yet another Monk tune and we focus our efforts on phrasing. Phrasing is the biggest and most important factor when it comes to playing a solo that makes sense and is memorable. Our goal with this month's episode is to get you to think about phrasing over the chord changes. We have a tendency to play these little self-contained phrases that stop right before the chord moves on. When we break this habit, so many of our limitations disappear. Episode 176: Herbie Hancock Voicings!
This week continues our lick of the month series, but in a slightly different way. Normally, we take a look at a traditional piece of vocabulary from a solo. This week, we are going to dissect some Herbie Hancock voicings and turn them into arpeggios. This will force you to play some different and wider intervals than you normally do and should open up your ears and fingers to some new possibilities. I often work in this manner when I feel like I'm stuck and playing the same things all the time. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to grab the PDF! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 174: Voice Leading Exercises
This week is all about using your natural instrument to start learning and hearing some concepts that we all need in our tool kit. You will be singing this week and for the next few episodes so get your voice tuned up and ready to go! This will eventually lead us to some great ways of coming up with our own vocabulary organically and not forcing ourselves to learn and memorize tons of vocabulary. While the former is still something we should be doing on a regular basis, some folks (like myself), aren't very good at memorizing and regurgitating. This is an alternate method that I think will be valuable for a lot of you out there. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Episode 173: Tune of the Month: Well You Needn’t
This month we cover one of my favorite Thelonious Monk tunes, Well You Needn't. This tune is unique in many ways. It uses almost exclusively half-step motion in the chord changes which provides us a unique challenge when improvising. In this episode we talk about using motivic development yet again to gain some facility and knowledge of the chord changes. This is a great way to approach this tune when you're starting out and develop fluency before trying more complicated devices. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the PDF! Episode 172: Dexter Gordon’s Beautiful Phrase
This episode continues our Lick of the Month series utilizing a line from Dexter Gordon's solo on Three O'clock in the Morning. We talked about the melody to this tune on a previous episode, but now it's time to take a look at part of his solo and learn from it. We feature an 8 bar phrase that moves from pure melodic joy into a more bebop approach. We talk about the evolution of the phrase and how you can inject this type of thing into your own playing. Episode 171: Fast Tempo Hacks
This episode is in response to a question from one of my students, Mike. His concern was those tunes with fast tempos and dense chord changes. Something we all struggle with. This episode is all about turning those tunes into an opportunity instead of a section to be feared. By turning them into a ballad or a set of cadenzas, we can free ourselves up to try new things and develop new pathways through tunes and keys. When we look at things like this as learning tools, we suddenly change our view on them and can use tough tunes to create momentum instead of worry. Enjoy the episode! Episode 170: Stylizing A Melody Part 2
This week continues our discussion on stylizing a melody. This time, we take a look at a great jazz standard, I Remember You, and talk about some concrete techniques we can use to make it more interesting than what is written in the book. David, one of our loyal listeners should be credited with bringing these ideas up and suggesting this tune. Thanks, David, and I hope you all get something out of this episode! Episode 169: Stylizing A Melody Part 1
Playing the melody is an often overlooked skill. We focus so much on the solo we are about to play, that the melody becomes an afterthought. This week, we put an end to that thinking and make sure we treat the melody with the care and respect it deserves. We start our journey by transcribing the melody, and only the melody, to a great Dexter Grodon recording of the tune, Three O'clock in the Morning. Dexter is going to teach us some things (as he always does) about swing, feel, and articulation. This will ultimately rub off in our own playing and turn our melodies into things we look forward to rather than just getting through them. WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??
