RERUN | Selenis Levya — No One Can Tell You It’s “Not For You”
Actress, author, and activist, Selenis Leyva believes that the desire to perform is something that you’re born with, a passion that lies within your genes. Born in the Bronx, it was clear from the start that Selenis had a thirst for learning the craft when at age 14, she asked to use the school auditorium to create a drama class for herself and a group of her fellow classmates. Today, she recalls a defining moment in her youth where she was told that her dream of pursuing education in the arts was “not for you” and how this pivotal moment gave her the motivation to go forward with the mindset of “Just watch me.” Selenis captivated audiences with her riveting and layered performance as Gloria Mendoza in Netflix’s hit show, “Orange is the New Black.” What started as a dayplayer role that her agent advised her to pass on, became a fully fledged character she created off of a breakdown that simply read, “Gloria Mendoza, Latina.” Today, we’ll hear about her journey navigating an industry where Selenis recognized a lack of Latinx representation on screen and how that was reflected early on in her career in the types of roles she was called in for. Over the course of her 20 year career, Selenis has continued to challenge the idea of what others labeled as “not for you” and has used her platform to shine a light on the stories of others who are often excluded from the table. She has achieved this not only on screen, but also through the publishing of a book co written with her sister, Marizol Leyva, titled, “My Sister: How One Sibling’s Transition Changed Us Both.” Selenis has a kindness and self confidence that radiates to those around her when sharing advice for up and coming actors. Above all else, she emphasizes the importance of believing in yourself. With self respect and self love, she says, that’s all that’s needed to want the best for yourself and to settle for nothing less. RERUN | Emmy Nominated Tom Pelphrey — When You're In the Presence of a Master
Today we sit down with actor Tom Pelphrey. What began as a sports injury, from a very short-lived high school football career, and a friend subsequently suggesting he try out for the school play, a perfect storm of influences and awakenings (and the power of encouragement) made Tom realize that he was good at something for the first time in his life—his natural aptitude on stage eventually launched him into a full and thriving career in theater, television, and film. Tom’s work continues to captivate audiences, with roles on Cinemax’s Banshee, Marvel’s Iron Fist, Netflix’s original hit series Ozark, and many more. From his first audition with casting director Alexa Fogel (where he didn’t land the job), Tom explains how not booking the role evolved into a now 15-year working relationship with one of television's most respected casting directors. He shares how self-doubt and struggling with feelings of inadequacy accompanied him throughout his twenties, and how he discovered validation out of admiration, how to evaluate self-value, and the realizations that can only come from maturity and experience. We get to chat about the power of memorization muscle, soap stage stories, and how to navigate the tide of workload shifts, seen through his mountainous climb from one-take-wonder jobs to working under the guidance of an industry master, Mr. David Fincher. Coming out of “guest-star land” to becoming a series regular, Tom explains what it means to not take things personally and the importance of not attaching one’s self-worth to the results. And of course, we get to gush about his experience of working alongside Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, where he has gleaned even more tricks of the trade. Tom even shares the daily practices he continually uses to remain grounded in an ever-changing industry, which is even more valuable given the nature of these unprecedented times—in fact, this is my first ever Zoom interview, making it not just an honor, but also befitting, that we get to retell the stories of adaptation and triumph that landed Tom Pelphrey right here. Today’s guest is an actor, writer, director, and producer. She is none other than Sarah Wayne Callies, best known for portraying Lori Grimes on AMC’s record-breaking series The Walking Dead. Sarah’s made an unforgettable impression on audiences worldwide by bringing complex and powerful female characters to life on screen. Her appreciation for these dynamic roles began long before she was a series regular on multiple critically acclaimed shows (including Unspeakable, Colony, Prison Break, and her upcoming leading role on NBC’s Council of Dads). Exploring and sharing the female voice has always been important to Sarah—from studying feminism and mythology in college to honoring the guidance of strong women in her family. Sarah’s career, as she says, is a miracle and series of accidents. But as you’ll find out, it’s also a testament to hard work, gratitude (always gratitude), and resourcefulness. You’ll hear how she used riding on the Subway to improve her on-camera audition technique, what helps her return to true North, and how important it is for artists to know and trust themselves… even if that means moving to British Columbia. RERUN | Brandon Kyle Goodman: Commit to Your Energy
From bringing diverse, powerful characters to life on the screen, to writing scripts for one of the most successful television series on Netflix, Brandon Kyle Goodman has emerged in the entertainment industry as a powerful force with a voice to be reckoned with. This summer, Goodman can be seen starring in Netflix’s upcoming feature film, “Feel the Beat,” opposite Sofia Carson. The drama follows an out-of-work actress, April (Carson), who returns to her small hometown after failing to find success on Broadway and is soon recruited to train a misfit group of young dancers for a big competition. Goodman shines as the outspokenly brave, queer Deco, April’s neighbor and support system while she adjusts returning to her country life. “Feel the Beat” is slated to premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2020. Additional acting credits for Goodman include recently starring as Andy, an eager father-to-be, in Amazon’s successful rom-com anthology series, “Modern Love,” as well as a recurring role in the Amazon pilot, “People Just Do Nothing.” Goodman has also appeared as one of the leads in Fullscreen’s digital series, “Alive in Denver,” and can be seen in the independent features, “The Blackout,” “The Relationtrip,” Hulu’s “Plus One,” and Blue Fox’s “Papi Chulo,” alongside Matt Bomer and Wendi McLendon-Covey. When not acting in front of the camera, Goodman has also found success in the writers’ room. This year, Goodman joined the writing team for seasons four and five of Netflix’s smash-hit, animated comedy series, “Big Mouth.” “Big Mouth” is currently set to return for its fourth season on Netflix in 2020, following an unprecedented, three-season renewal announcement from the network. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Goodman discovered a love of acting throughout high school, before attending the Tisch School of Arts at New York University (NYU). Upon graduation from NYU, Goodman joined a musical sketch comedy group called “Political Subversities,” which featured weekly sketch and song performances by many NYU alumni about what was happening in the zeitgeist of pop-culture and politics and was even created into a web series. It wasn’t long before Goodman moved to LA full-time to pursue a career as both an actor and writer in Hollywood. As a proud, queer, Black person, Goodman has recently emerged as a staunch advocate for the #BlackLivesMatter movement, having gained over 20,000 followers and counting in the span of just a few days following a recent viral video message to Goodman’s white peers regarding his experience as a Black person in America. After the video message received over a million views and a handful of high-profile celebrity reposts, Goodman continues to actively speak out against the injustices that have been plaguing the Black community for decades, encouraging his followers to donate to the Innocence Projects, LA LGBT Center, Color of Change, and Black Lives Matter. RERUN | Bridget Regan: The Gift of Our Craft
For today’s episode, we’re sitting down with Bridget Regan, from Jane the Virgin, Agent Carter, The Last Ship, and the upcoming Paramount Network show, Paradise Lost, where she got to work with iconic artists like Barbara Hershey and Nick Nolte. She shares how she got her start doing community theatre while growing up just outside of San Diego, and how her experiences there lead her to a career performing on Broadway and in countless hit TV shows. We chat about some of her hilarious audition stories, what it was like working in the theatre and then transitioning to film, and how she’s always managed to trust her artistic instincts—even when they lead her against the advice of her team. We get into some great listener questions, where she offers her practical advice for the process, but as she shares, her “only real ritual is preparation.” It is this kind of investment in her craft that has led her to opportunities where she’s shot for 48 hours straight between TWO major TV shows. This deep desire to create connected work is why she’s never stopped working. Her credits also include roles in John Wick, Grey’s Anatomy, Sons of Anarchy, and White Collar. Today’s guest has been around the arts her entire life. She is the acclaimed and generously creative British actor, writer, director and producer Rebecca Hall. Many of us first saw her in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige and soon after starring in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Rebecca witnessed early on what an artist’s life could be. Her first on screen appearance was in the TV mini-series The Camomile Lawn at the age of 10. It was also around this time that her father (celebrated stage director Peter Hall) gave her some advice: the key to being an actor is making sure that you remember to live! She talks about her time at University and finding success on stage before appearing on screen again. After The Prestige, Rebecca continued on to a truly incredible career that’s lead to multiple awards and critical recognition. Her work includes The Red Riding Triology, The Town, Parade’s End, Iron Man 3, Transcendence The Awakening, Frost/Nixon, The Gift, Christine, and Tales from the Loop. Later this year you can watch her in Godzilla vs. Kong. She’s a master craftswoman. From sketching actors in the back of her father’s stage rehearsals to directing her own projects, you’ll hear the stories of how Rebecca pushes beyond expectations to create the art and life that she wants to express. MONICA RAYMUND: You Can Shape A Choice, You Can’t Shape Nothing
Today’s special guest wears many hats. Actor, writer, producer, and former jazz band member Monica Raymund believes there is no right way to become an artist. Graduating from the Juilliard School class of 2008, Monica felt that her 4 years spent as a student allowed her the space to fully explore her instrument and break through her own inner blocks. After gaining representation through Juillard’s showcase, Monica shares that the determining factor in choosing her agent was the fact that her talent agent’s life didn’t revolve around the entertainment industry. With a lack of representation of Latina women on screen, Monica initially did not see television as an opportunity for her. Now, through the process of having grown comfortably into herself, Monica discusses how she now comfortably says “no” to projects that don't align with her values. Having spent 8 eight seasons as fan-favorite character, Gabriela Dawson, on NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” Monica shares the ways in which she was able to stay creatively fulfilled as an artist when not shooting the series. With a list of credits including “Chicago PD,” “Hightown,” “The Good Wife,” “Blue Bloods,” “Brahmin Bulls,” “Arbitrage” and many more, Monica is going full-steam ahead when it comes to work both in front of and behind the camera. Today, Monica opens up about her first major network test experience, how NBC’s Female Forward program helped launch her directing career, and how what’s going on off-screen in an actor’s self tape is what makes a compelling audition. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Monica Raymund right here. TAMARA TAYLOR: Law of Attraction - When You Don’t Desire Something Too Much, It Just Wants You
Today I sit down with star of the newly released “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Tamara Taylor. As a shy kid, Tamara started out in modeling school. It was there where she discovered how she came alive on a runway performing in front of an audience. With dreams of pursuing acting, Tamara credits her mother with helping her to set her creative priorities on track when she asked, “Do you want to do this because you want to be famous, or do you want to do this because you like it?” After moving to Los Angeles with her best friend to pursue their entertainment industry dreams, Tamara studied with acting coaches Margie Haber and Howard Fine and describes her experience of first going out for commercial auditions. After landing a series of commercials as a spokesperson for AT&T, Tamara was able to launch her commercial success into securing theatrical agent representation. Since then, Tamara has earned a list of credits that just keeps growing including her well-known role as Dr. Camille Saroyan on FOX’s “Bones,” ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Netflix’s “Altered Carbon” and “October Faction,” FOX’s “Party of Five”, ABC’s “Lost”, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” and many more. Today, Tamara candidly and openly discusses both the challenges and excitements that await actors at every new level in their career, from new actor to series regular. She shares her journey towards developing and embracing her own self-confidence, and shares how that confidence has allowed her to recover gracefully from on-set blunders, to fully show up in auditions even when feeling nervous or unprepared, and most of all, to always listen to her gut. RUDI DHARMALINGAM: Go Beyond The Line Of Duty
Actor Rudi Dharmalingam showed a creative spark from a young age. From writing short stories and sketches with his two best friends while growing up, to attending the National Youth Theatre in the U.K. at the age of 16, Rudi excelled in his drama studies and had a fascination with performance. After graduating from the University of Salford, Rudi was ready to hit the ground running. He had his sights set on working as a professional actor in theater and had secured an agent during his first year at university. Today, Rudi shares the experience of being dropped by his agent after a terrifying accident on the way to his first audition and how he was able to push through the years of auditioning that followed. After booking an understudy role in the Royal National Theatre's London stage production of "The History Boys," Rudi began to see some momentum in his career. Since then, Rudi experienced a 15 year back-to-back run of theater productions including a West End run of "Mary Stuart," and a co-star role in "Hamlet" opposite Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican Theatre. After deciding that he was ready for a new adventure on the big screen, Rudi has now gracefully pivoted into the world of film and television with the premiere of Showtime's newest drama series, "Wakefield." Starring as psych ward nurse Nik Katira, this psychological drama explores the complexities of mental health when Nik himself begins to lose connection to his own reality. Rudi will also be returning in season 3 of "The Split," and can be seen in the upcoming 2022 release of the action-thriller series, "Extinction." Today, Rudi shares that what he loves most about acting is the intimacy. He dives into how that intimacy manifests itself differently in theater versus on screen, and he shares the ways in which he approaches character building from a place of instinct. Inspired by artistic legends such as Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, and following the teaching principles of Stanislavski, Rudi encourages all actors to think of a self-tape as a short film and to go above and beyond the line of duty when it comes to an audition. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Rudi Dharmalingam right here. BEN SCHNETZER: It's More Important To Be Excited Than It Is To Be Exciting
Born in New York, and having grown up with two actor parents, Ben Schnetzer never saw acting as any different from any other 9 to 5 job. Starting out in school plays, Ben recalls how his parents supported him from a young age and encouraged him to lead his own way when it came to his craft. Taking a year-long break after high school, Ben attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the U.K. and recalls the obstacles he encountered during his early years of auditioning. Landing his first major series on ABC’s “Happy Town,” Ben shares the experience of his first screen test and how he eventually learned to overcome audition nerves. Since then, Ben has racked up a slew of credits in films such as “Snowden,” “Pride,” “Warcraft,” “The Book Thief,” “Goat,” “The Giant,” as well as a lead role in the newly released FX television drama series, “Y: The Last Man.” Today, Ben dives into the art of self tapes and how actors can use them to their advantage as the new auditioning norm during the pandemic. He offers tips on what is helpful for actors to look for when watching playback of their tapes, and what to refrain from agonizing over. Going even deeper, Ben offers insight into what it really means when casting says they know if you’re right for the role within the first 20 seconds of your tape. More than anything, Ben stresses the importance of taking the work seriously, rather than taking yourself too seriously. He reminds artists that our characters are a construct in another person’s story, and we can only control the level of work that we put into our craft and the rest is out of our hands. Ben knows what it means to be excited about the work, to fall in love with the journey, and reminds actors everywhere that there is value to be found in feeling lost from time to time. SUSIE ABROMEIT: Getting Clear About The Artist You Want To Be
Susie Abromeit trains in her craft the same way she trained as an athlete. As a tennis player, Susie dedicated hours a day to perfecting her game and eventually earned the title of #6 top tennis players in the U.S. Despite her incredible success as an athlete, it was performance that always lit up her soul. Growing up in Florida, Susie spent much of her childhood drawing, writing stories, and being encouraged by her teachers and parents when it came to her natural acting talent. After reflecting on whether or not tennis was still serving her dreams and goals, at 18, Susie began to step away from tennis and started writing her own songs which eventually led her to perform alongside hip-hop artist Fat Joe for Atlantic Records. Applying that “killer instinct” from her tennis days, Susie went after what she knew she wanted in her acting career, and has shaped an impressive resume with roles in projects such as “Jessica Jones,” “Sex Drive,” “The Forever Purge,” “Chicago Med,” “The Haves and the Have Nots,” “Battle: Los Angeles,” “Devious Maids” as well as two upcoming projects including the holiday film, “Much Ado About Christmas,” and an appearance alongside Will Smith in the biographical drama “King Richard” set to release this November. Today, Susie shares how she believes stories help us make sense of the world around us. She believes that instead of making our lives into art, it is art that shapes our lives. She leaves listeners with helpful tools such as how to use character development as a form of line memorization, how she went about creating her own project, and she gets honest about the realities of the “machine” that is Hollywood. Tune in as she concludes with an incredible story of how she was able to leave an impression on the legendary Will Smith in a scene that demanded moment to moment actor discovery. AASIF MANDVI: Anatomy is Destiny
Over the course of his 30 year career, Aasif Mandvi has learned that the dreaded phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none,” is nothing more than a myth. As an actor, writer, producer, podcast host and much more, Aasif has no shortage of creative endeavors and has learned to embrace that multiplicity rather than fight it. Born in Mumbai, India, Aasif moved with his family to the U.K. and grew up in north England. His creativity was evident from a young age, from drawing to writing poetry to even performing a radio play as encouraged by his parents. Joining a children’s theater company, Aasif describes how acting served as an escape for him and how the “no pressure” attitude from his parents gave way to a sense of freedom in his acting with no expectations attached. After moving to America, Aasif studied drama in both high school and college and immediately secured a job with Disney. Upon moving to New York, Aasif felt that the lack of representation in the media left him without a career roadmap to follow from other actors that looked like him. While studying his craft, Aasif began to explore other ways he could get seen within the industry and wrote a one-man-show titled, “Sakina’s Restaurant” which was the first story of a south Asian immigrant family to be performed in New York City’s theater scene in Times Square. STEPHANIE SZOSTAK: The Importance of Mental Health As An Artist
French-American, Stephanie Szostak (show-stack) acts, writes and speaks. She is currently starring on ABC’s hit series A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, is working on a book called "Oh The TiDDies You'll Grow!" and speaks to various organizations (from corporate to non-profits supporting immigrant women, teens and mental health) encouraging people to "find their truth... with love & humor." Szostak got a late start on the acting scene (age 30) and had the willingness to disrupt her life, leaving her career in the corporate world behind to seek an authentic life. Over the past decade, she has played alongside Meryl Streep, Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, Matt Damon, Kevin Bacon, Ryan Reynolds and more. Transforming her own false starts, setbacks, rejection and loss, she brings forward relatable and impactful stories to help anyone embrace their uniqueness. As part of that mission, she is passionate about encouraging people to discover their own truth and individuality. From being told "You should have never happened" as her career grew so did the pressure, causing her performance to be negatively affected by feelings of unworthiness and fear. In response, she began to work on her mental game and looked to the actors she was intimidated by for answers. She was surprised to learn they too suffered from negative inner dialogue. This pushed her to address mindset and discover its interconnection with performance. Fascinated by what she learned, she created her own “playbook” to incorporate new skills to be more confident and playful when the red light turned on. Knowing she is where she is only thanks to the help of so many, Stephanie thrives to help and connect people to support their pursuit of their darn naked truth! Most notable projects include The Devil Wears Prada, Ironman 3, Dinner for Schmucks, We Bought a Zoo, ABC’s hit series, A Million Little Things and USA Network series, Satisfaction. YOLONDA ROSS: Grace of Intuition
Today's guest was initially in the business of fashion til she seized the opportunity to fill in for a coworker as a background actor for a popular show. She made such an impression that she was asked to return week after week until she got her union card and the rest is history for YOLONDA ROSS. An independent film darling, Yolonda made her feature film debut in the award-winning independent film “Stranger Inside” in 2001. Yolonda went on to win an IFP Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the role as well as received her first Film Independent Spirit Award nomination in the category of Best Debut Performance. From there she's worked steadily from 24 to THE UNITED STATES OF LELAND, THIRD WATCH, LAW & ORDER, TREME, THE GET DOWN, and HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. But it is her sensitive turn in the recurring role as the tough but loving mother, "Nurse Jada", in Lena Waith's THE CHI on Showtime is where she's been able to deepen her craft. She's done all she can to not be a one trick pony by directing a short film but shares the challenges of producing her own work. Yolonda has made an impression on any director who has had the privilege to work with her including the dynamic Angela Bassett in WHITNEY and the incomparable Denzel Washington who cast her in ANTWONE FISHER. Yolonda shares her techniques in creating a character by using music, wigs, jewelry and even perfumes. She talks about how she built a career working predominantly with female directors and how she uses her body as a vessel to tell stories for those that are underrepresented. KAREN GILLAN: Fear-Less vs Fear-Ful
There is a small percentage of actors who get the opportunity to be part of one franchise, but with todays guest, KAREN GILLAN, she's been part of not just one, but TWO multibillion dollar franchises. Her first agent described her as having "sheer perseverance" due to her being relentless in having them represent her: AT THE AGE OF 15! Two working class parents who were her biggest fans to the point of even playing major roles in booking auditions. That's right, you will hear how her mother's thick Scottish accent made Adam Mckay laugh to the point where he cast Karen due to the sheer comedy of the self tape. Her father's love for old crooners such as Frank Sinatra gave Karen aspirations of being an opera singer. She was so infatuated with the performance arts that gymnastic looked like dance routines! Her iconic “Nebula” role on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was initially a one-off with her character dying in the first film but her take on the character inspired James Gunn to rewrite the fate of her character. She did not waste anytime after finishing drama school by booking the "Amy Pond" role on DOCTOR WHO which soon led to her torrid pace of SELFIE, AVENGERS, JUMANJI and the soon to be released Netflix GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE. She is easily Box Office Gold but that doesn't deter her from being fearful of losing that momentum. She's reached a place where she would TAKE advice from her younger self instead of giving it. These are the unforgettable stories that landed KAREN GILLAN right here. For exclusive content surrounding this and all podcast episodes, sign up for our amazing newsletter at AlyshiaOchse.com. CASSIDY FREEMAN: A Sweet Kind of "Fuck It"
Today’s guest grew up the daughter of two prominent Chicago attorneys and the youngest of three siblings immersed in the arts. Everyone welcome: Cassidy Freeman. Her poise, work ethic and determination to constantly challenge herself quickly paid off. She embraced her old soul and let go of her aspirations of being an ingénue which immediately led to her first big break. Not knowing what a "stand in" or a "#2 on a call sheet" might deter other folks, but not Cassidy. She used that experience on her first big show as her TV Acting grad school. You've definitely seen her in the star turning role as "Tess Luthor" on SMALLVILLE and she continued to THE PLAYBOY CLUB, VAMPIRE DIARIES, LONGMIRE and THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES. But before blazing the small screen with these credits, she had to learn some hard lessons along the way that led her to have fun when acting...especially for auditions. We go from 7 year old Cassidy gracing the stage of The Chicago Lyric Opera to performing at The Atlantic Theater in New York City at 22 years old, with some sound advice from a close Broadway novice that completely shifted her dreams to Broadway by way of TV. She shares her appalling experience of auditioning for a prominent Casting Director who gave her advice that she still thinks about to this day. You will hear why acting is the one art form you can't do in a vacuum since we have to listen in order to be present which is why she still takes classes at Playhouse West to this day. This is why she continues to redefine success to this day by loving life by living it. DAVID DASTMALCHIAN: No Agent, No problem
Today, I sit down with actor, producer, writer, and filmmaker, David Dastmalchian. For over a decade, David has built a dynamic career driven by ambition and vision. In an industry that often tells us there is only one way to success, David has proved time and time again that there are any number of roads an artist can take to get to where they want to be, and with he himself often taking the road less traveled. Starting out in the theater world of Chicago, David quickly began racking up commercial credits which brought him to New York. Having been told throughout the early years of his career that his type would not be marketable in Los Angeles, David stresses just how important it is to have representation that believes in the vision you have for yourself. So important in fact, that David has been flying solo without an agent for the last 4 years and has still found tremendous success in his career. Including his incredible story of auditioning for Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight,” and the advice that Christopher offered him about acting that has stuck with him all these years later. After his time in Chicago and New York, David relocated to Los Angeles in 2010. Even with the success of “The Dark Knight” under his belt, David reveals that he still struggled to gain career momentum. David stresses to listeners the importance of doing anything and everything you can to practice your craft as you never know where it may lead. David began writing, making short films, creating his own features, taking every class and workshop available, as well as auditioning for filmmakers fresh out of film school - a move that ended up serving him well a couple years later in his career. You’ve seen him not only in “The Dark Knight,” but also in Warner Brother’s “Prisoners,” Disney-Marvel’s “Ant-man,” opposite Sandra Bullock in the hit Netflix feature film, “Birdbox,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Reprisal,” “The Belko Experiment,” and soon to appear in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” and the upcoming sci-fi feature, “Dune” both premiering later this year. Starting every single day looking at his dreams and goals board mounted on his wall, David candidly and openly discusses the importance of caring for your mental health, making your own opportunities, and the value of knowing that whether or not you reach your life goals, that you’re going to make amazing things happen along the way. JASIKA NICOLE: How To Recover When You’re On The Precipice Of Quitting
Today’s guest possesses creative gifts that expand across all forms and all mediums. Fully fueled by heart and passion, Jasika Nicole is an actor, clothing designer, artist, pottery maker, LGBTQ advocate, writer, and the list doesn’t stop there. Committed to pursuing an education in the performing arts, Jasika studied theater throughout her college years before relocating to New York City to follow her dreams of stage acting in New York City. Like many actors, Jasika initially struggled to balance the need for a day job without allowing it to interfere with audition opportunities. Making the decision to focus solely on what she came to New York to do, Jasika left her day job and booked a 3 line role in a Fringe Festival production that led her to get noticed by a producer in the audience - proving that no role is ever too small. After gaining representation, Jasika began to shift her focus to film and television, with the goal of winning the audition room on personality rather than trying to figure out what casting wants. Landing herself on many sets, Jasika describes her time observing those around her as a “crash course in acting.” Even throughout her thriving career, Jasika admits to having moments where she felt herself on the verge of quitting and questioning whether or not she wanted to continue to be an actor. With self compassion, she describes how her other creative passions have been her saving grace, allowing her to find her way back into the love of acting and reminding her that her self worth is not determined by the number of credits on her resume. You’ve seen her as Dr. Carly Lever in “The Good Doctor,” Agent Astrid Farnsworth in “Fringe,” among other hit projects such as “Scandal”, “Station 19”, “Underground”, “She’s Out of My League”, “Take the Lead” and the newly released, “Punky Brewster” reboot now streaming on Peacock. Jasika shows no signs of slowing down and shares the many lessons today that she has learned along the way, including how there are no right or wrongs when it comes to process, tips and tricks on how to bridge performance gaps week to week as a series regular, and the importance of asking yourself whether or not this is a role you truly want to play and if it aligns with the kinds of stories you want to tell.
