Diana Pasulka: a religious study of UFOs and nonhuman intelligences
Today, the Spotlight shines On Diana Pasulka, religious studies professor and the author of two books I have really enjoyed in the last few years: 2019’s American Cosmic: UFOs, Religion, Technology and Encounters: Experiences with Non-Human Intelligences, released in November 2023.As Diana points out in her work and in our discussion, religious studies is not about the veracity of any particular religion or religious claim, instead, it is about the implications of belief on the believers and the societies they live in. As you will hear, this led to Diana’s interest in other groups of ‘believers’, namely people who claim to have had experiences with UFOs and other non-human intelligences. A big part of this work involves talking with and spending time with the so-called ‘experiencers,’ not only of UFOs but of angels, demons, and other types of perceived sentience and consciousness, including AI.Another strand of Diana’s work, which we only briefly touched on but may be of specific interest to listeners of this podcast, is the role of media in shaping and reinforcing belief - and how context, presentation, and repetition shape perceived ‘truth’ about topics for which there is no objective or agreed upon fact. For example, Diana relays cases of experiencers who report interactions with crafts or beings that do not look like stereotypical flying saucers or little gray aliens. Even in the community of ufologists, those cases get criticized or dismissed because the reports are not what UFOs or aliens are supposed to look like. In our hour together, we covered a fraction of the ground I would have liked to cover, so we are linking to Diana’s website, books, and other resources in the show notes. ------------------Dig DeeperVisit Diana Pasulka at dwpasulka.comFollow Diana Pasulka on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter (X)Purchase Encounters: Experiences with Nonhuman Intelligences from Macmillan, Bookshop, or AmazonBe sure to peruse this episode's exhaustive show notes at spotlightonpodcast.com------------------• Did you enjoy this episode? Javon Jackson gives Peter Bradley's art a swinging soundtrack
Today, the Spotlight shines On saxophonist and composer Javon Jackson. Javon sat with us in early October to talk about his film score for the art-world documentary With Peter Bradley, music which came out back in June 2023 on the saxophonist's Solid Jackson Records.Peter Bradley has had a 50-year career as an abstract artist, but one that saw him getting little acclaim until the last few years. In addition to his work as an artist, the daily practice of which is documented in the film, Bradley was a mover and shaker in various mid-late 20th century modern art scenes. His work is interconnected with his love of jazz, to the point that Javon calls Bradley a “musician whose instrument is paint”. The score for the film conjures Bradley's favorite jazz icons — Miles, Coltrane and Jackson's former employer, Art Blakey.I had the opportunity to screen the film before speaking with Javon and I fell in love with the subject, the art and the score. I urge you to check out the music and Peter Bradley’s art. Tea Krulos explores hidden subcultures in American society
Today, the Spotlight shines On freelance journalist and author Tea Krulos.Tea wrote two books that I enjoyed this year: Heroes in the Night: Inside the Real Life Superhero Movement from 2013 and 2020’s American Madness: The Story of the Phantom Patriot and How Conspiracy Theories Hijacked American Consciousness. Both of those works take the reader deep into parts of contemporary American society that are not often explored and if they are, it is usually done with ridicule or scorn. Tea takes a different approach. He seeks to understand what kind of people are drawn to non-mainstream beliefs and movements, often at the risk of their personal relationships, their livelihood, credibility, and in some cases, their lives. He’s also not afraid to insert himself into his stories, observing up close and often becoming an active participant in the world of his subjects. The results are a much more vulnerable and empathetic look at our fellow citizens and their sometimes troubling worldviews.------------------Dig DeeperVisit Tea Krulos at teakrulos.comFollow Tea Krulos on Instagram, Threads, Facebook, and Twitter (X)Check out books by Tea Krulos at Bookshop, Powell's, Amazon, and Barnes & NobleHow to talk to conspiracy theorists—and still be kindHow to Spot Misinformation and Disinformation OnlineFor expanded show notes and other episode information, go to this episode’s page on spotlightonpodcast.com ------------------• Did you enjoy this episode? Benjamin Koppel plays jazz with a novelist's narrative
Today, the Spotlight shines On Danish saxophonist, composer, and best-selling author Benjamin Koppel.Benjamin joined us to discuss his July 2023 release Perspective, the latest work from KCB Collective, a trio that, in addition to Koppel, includes Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums. It looks great on paper and sounds even better.Benjamin is the grandson of Danish classical composer Herman D. Koppel, while his father, Anders Koppel, is a renowned Hammond organ player and a composer. As you will hear, music, creativity, and the arts are in the Koppel DNA.We recorded this episode at the end of September, and since then, Benjamin has announced another new project, due out November 25. White Buses tells the story of the Red Cross evacuation operation at the end of World War II that rescued over 20,000 prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. The work features a mix of first-person spoken accounts gathered by Koppel himself and brand-new compositions performed by a set of international all-stars. We recorded our talk before this project was formally announced and before the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel, which added an all-to-unfortunate timely nature to its release.Benjamin and I had a great time connecting, which came on our second attempt after he and I had some time zone snafus. Luckily, we were both able to laugh it off and get cooking. On Minimalism: Kerry O'Brien and William Robin in conversation
Today, the Spotlight shines On Kerry O’Brien and William Robin, co-authors of the book On Minimalism: Documenting a Musical Movement from University of California Press.Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and LaMonte Young are stereotypically described as the “Big Four” of minimalism in music. While On Minimalism does nothing to undermine or belittle their pioneering and important contributions to the form, the authors widen the aperture to show a broader scope to the music, from its beginnings in the psychedelic counterculture through its present-day influences on ambient jazz, doom metal, and electronic music. The book encompasses figures as diverse as Yoko Ono and Brian Eno, John and Alice Coltrane, Pauline Oliveros and Julius Eastman, as well as many other well-and-little-known names and subgenres. There is also a much due focus on the contributions of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ musicians. I loved this book and I think listeners to this podcast will as well.Enjoy Kerry O’Brian and William Robin, on minimalism.------------------Dig DeeperGrab a copy of On Minimalism from UC Press, Bookshop, Powell's, Amazon, or Barnes & NobleFollow Kerry O'Brien on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter (X)Follow William Robin on Instagram or Twitter (X)On Minimalism: a Spotify Playlist ------------------I would like to give one of our listeners my copy of On Minimalism. Simon Berz creates art with drums, sound, and trash
Today, the Spotlight shines On drummer and sound artist Simon Berz. The impetus for our conversation was the release of Simon’s collaboration with American bassist and sonic wizard Bill Laswell and the Japanese avant garde trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. While Kondo passed away in October of 2020, this work, Breath versus Beats, was not released until August 2023.Simon is a prolific artist across multiple forms and media. Seth Godin and The Song of Significance
Today, the Spotlight shines On author, entrepreneur, and teacher Seth Godin. I recently watched an interview with Seth wherein he was describing a discussion he had with someone asking him for career advice and he remarked, “I was not always Seth Godin”. For some of us, that is hard to believe. While his thinking and teachings have, of course, grown and expanded over the years, it seems like there has always been a Seth Godin and that he’s been Seth Godin that whole time. I grew up as part of the first generation that had computers in the home, that came into the business world as technology and networks were coming to the fore, and who first did business on the internet. As an early denizen of Silicon Alley in New York City, I remember Seth’s early company Yoyodyne (which sold to Yahoo! 1998) and his writings around permission marketing and communities. All very early, influential internet milestones. Seth joined us to talk about some of the concepts and themes in his recent book The Song of Significance: A New Manifesto for Teams. It is a book that identifies and offers ways out of the current dead end or cul de sac that is the modern workplace - that names the problems and behaviors that are driving so much angst up and down org charts. If you have ever felt trapped in a less-than-ideal work environment but could not quite say what it was that was wrong, the book might provide you a sense of recognition and even relief. It will also likely tell you how you contributed to the situation and give you some things to consider so the past is not prologue. There is much more to the book and Seth’s thinking than we were able to cover in our brief visit but I hope our talk spurs you to dig deeper. ------------------Dig DeeperVisit Seth Godin online at seths.blogLearn more about The Song of Significance and other books by Seth Godin at seths.storeSubscribe to Seth's fantastic podcast and email newsletterFollow Seth on Instagram and LinkedInWhy Steve Ballmer FailedThe Psychology of The TricksterStop Stealing Dreams (what is school for?)Patti Smith - Just Kids (audiobook) ------------------• Did you enjoy this episode? Dengue Fever’s Ting Mong might be our album of the year
Today, the Spotlight shines On Chhom Nimol and Ethan Holtzman, vocalist and keyboardist, respectively, of the band Dengue Fever. This episode is a little bit different. Dengue Fever was in the midst of a run of shows up the West Coast of the US in support of their new record Ting Mong, which is on my shortlist for Album of the Year. Their team suggested I meet the band in person instead of recording over Zoom, the way most of our recent episodes have come together. As a result, this talk took place over tea in the lobby of the band’s hotel, just after their soundcheck on a recent Sunday night in Seattle. It’s a little shorter than a typical episode given the demands on Nimol and Ethan’s time on a show day, but I think you will enjoy. There may be better rock or pop bands that have emerged in this century but I have yet to find one. 20 years in, they are a band still growing and taking delight in what they do. Joe Mills (Aver) of Move 78 decodes jazz from the algorithms
Today, the Spotlight shines On Joe Mills, a musician and producer who performs under the name ‘Aver’ in the Berlin-based band Move 78.Move 78’s music sits at the intersection of improvised jazz and programmed hip-hop. Their music is crafted from hours of studio improvisations that have been chopped-up, rearranged, and layered with live instrumentation provided by the band members. In this chat, Aver explains their technique and process as well as how it extends to their live performances. It’s amazing. Move 78’s name is taken from a match of the ancient Chinese board game Go between Lee Sedol, the world champion of Go at the time of the match, and a computer program named AlphaGo. Lee was defeated in the first three games of the five-game match by his AI opponent, but he adapted and played a move so strange that it completely befuddled AlphaGo and its algorithms. This move, which represented the human response to the challenges of an ever-evolving technological world, was, of course, Move 78.------------------Dig DeeperListen to Move 78’s Automated Improvisation on Bandcamp or your streaming platform of choiceFollow Move 78 on Instagram and FacebookFollow Aver on Instagram and FacebookMove 78 - “Middling” [Live At Badehaus]In Two Moves, AlphaGo and Lee Sedol Redefined the FutureMove 78’s Go-inspired artworkUnapologetic Expression: The Inside Story of the UK Jazz ExplosionGilles Peterson: ‘The boundary between club culture and jazz is finally breaking’DJ Shadow On Sampling As A ‘Collage Of Mistakes’El-P: 10 of his best productionsDJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Product Placement------------------• Did you enjoy this episode? Brandon Seabrook’s magic clusterf**k of merciless banjo torture
The Spotlight shines On guitarist and banjoist Brandon Seabrook, hot off the release of his new album brutalovechamp on Pyroclastic Records.Brandon is known for pushing his music past the far reaches of the extreme, fusing elements from punk, jazz, pop, and metal. His music has been called “abrasive” and “angular”, with an intense focus on virtuosity. brutalovechamp covers new ground. With his octet, Epic Proportions, Brandon explores beauty, personal emotion and a lyricism not usually associated with his music. In his liner notes for the record, he describes the album as “a departure” and “intimate and vast.” Our conversation was vast as well, covering Brandon’s early life, affinity for ‘80s metal, and his move to more vulnerable, less process-driven music, as well as his reasons for this shift. Today, the Spotlight shines On Vermont-based saxophonist, composer and arranger Brian McCarthy. Brian joins us on the occasion of his most recent project, AFTER|LIFE released back in late May, just a few days after we recorded this talk. AFTER|LIFE is the second album of Brian’s in the nonet format as well as the second to be brought to fruition through support from the Vermont Community Foundation and the Vermont Arts Council. Chris Pearson in The Times of London wrote, “Imagine John Coltrane's A Love Supreme driven by science rather than spirituality…while Coltrane praised God, McCarthy muses musically on death and rebirth in a cyclical cosmos and how we are all linked, down to a molecular level.”There is a lot of concept packed into this record and Brian guides us through it. Jane Ira Bloom & Mark Helias
Today, the Spotlight shines On New York-based jazz innovators Jane Ira Bloom and Mark Helias, who join us to discuss their latest collaboration with drummer Bobby Previte, 2.3.23.I’d like to read from Mark’s notes for the album, “2.3.23 was an outgrowth of the improvisational recording project that emerged between myself and Jane Ira Bloom beginning at an early stage of the pandemic in April/May of 2020. We struggled to come to terms with the technological limitations of playing remotely over the internet. The initial motivation was to play music with another musician, something that we had become accustomed to and took for granted until the pandemic arose. As we became adept at the advances in software and the tamping down of the inherent latency of remote recording we managed to produce two wonderful collections of spontaneous duos that documented our shared need for human and musical connection in a trying time…At one point I sent a duo track of myself and Jane to Bobby Previte to see if he might want to add drums and percussion to the track. It was just a thought on my part but the result was stunning. Bobby was able to interact so deftly with our improvised duo that I felt that we were now venturing into new territory conceptually that brought into question many suppositions about improvisation, interaction and issues of time and being…”These recordings completely challenge any preconceived notions the listener might have about any “right way” to collaborate or create improvisational music. To paraphrase Elvis Costello, talking about these recordings is like dancing about architecture, but we gave it a go and an enlightening and intriguing conversation was the result.Get 2.3.23Learm About Jane Ira Bloom | Mark Helias | Bobby PreviteHost Lawrence PeryerMore Spotlight On Hosted on Acast. Today’s episode is a live recording of a conversation Spotlight On host Lawrence Peryer had in Santa Barbara, at the FestForums conference, with American musical treasure, Jesse Colin Young. Jesse Colin Young has been a pioneer of American roots music for more than half a century and has left his unique mark on the intersecting worlds of folk, blues, jazz, country, and rock & roll. As the frontman of the Youngbloods, he immortalized the ideals of the Woodstock generation with "Get Together," an international hit that called for peace and brotherhood during the turbulent 1960s. During the decades that followed, Young expanded both his audience and his artistic range, releasing a string of solo albums that mixed socially-conscious lyrics with top-tier guitar skills and gorgeous vocals. An acclaimed songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, producer, label owner, podcast host, and longtime social/environmental activist, he has established a permanent place in America's musical landscape, while continuing to make modern music that's every bit as vital as his work during the counterculture era.Later in the talk LP and his guest were joined by Jesse’s daughter Jazzie, a performer in her own right.About Jesse Colin Young | Jazzie YoungHost Lawrence PeryerMore Spotlight On Hosted on Acast. Michael Kuelker on The Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Today, the spotlight shines on author and educator Michael Kuelker, here to talk about his recent book, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils On Record: A Narrative Discography. Michael is a teacher, writer, and reggae radio DJ in St. Louis, Missouri. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils are an American rock group who first formed in 1972. Hailing from Springfield, Missouri, the band had two major hits, "If You Wanna Get to Heaven" from their debut album in 1974 and a certified smash, "Jackie Blue" from their 1975 follow-up.Michael’s book uses the framework of their discography as the scaffolding on which to hang not only over 50 years of their story, but to go back further to describe the music and cultural scenes of the Ozark region as well as the various threads of the music business and cultural industries that the band buffeted against over the years. It is a unique mode of storytelling, one worth reading and applying to other artists and scenes. Michael joined us to talk about his work on the book and to give us some insight into the band and the world they developed in.Author WebsiteHost Lawrence PeryerMore Spotlight On. Hosted on Acast. That Petrol Emotion
Today, the spotlight shines on the wildly influential post-punk group, That Petrol Emotion. Guitarist and songwriter Raymond Gorman and lead singer Steve Mack joined Spotlight On host Lawrence Peryer to mark the release of the band’s career-spanning box set, Every Beginning Has a Future: An Anthology 1984-1994.Spawned from the ashes of the Northern Irish pop-punk group, The Undertones, the Petrols synthesized all of the music, culture and politics around them to create something vibrant and new. Across five albums - all given a fresh clean-up and augmented with singles, B-sides and rarities in the new box - the band combined 80’s indie/alt rock, post-punk, garage, dance and hip hop to innovate their way into becoming one of the most important and influential bands of their era. Their genre-hopping and political identities came with a cost. While their fanbase was fervent and ever-growing, mainstream success eluded the band, as their sound was too difficult for marketers to pigeonhole and their politics - particularly their identification with Northern Ireland and other liberation struggles, made them untouchable and in some cases censored by the mainstream press of the time. But the music and legacy is undeniable. That Petrol Emotion fits neatly on a record shelf with trailblazers like the Clash or Public Image Limited and you would be hard-pressed to imagine a BritPop or the Manchester scene without the path they forged.
