181: The Real Suburban Axe Murder: Candy & Betty

On a hot Friday the 13th in June of 1980, Allan Gore was worried. He couldn't get a hold of his wife, Betty. For hours, he'd called her over and over. No answer. Betty always answered. She didn’t get out by herself, especially not with their two small daughters. She hated when he traveled--scared of being alone, so Allan was trying to check in to reassure her. Now he was starting to panic. He finally got his neighbors to get into his house. When he called back, he could never have been prepared for the staggering horror of what happened to his wife. 178: Parental Alienation & The Death of Dr. Rick Lohstroh

On a Friday afternoon, Dr. Rick Lohstroh parked in his ex-wife Deborah Geisler’s driveway waiting to pick up his two sons. It had been a nasty custody battle and their ten year old son, Aaron, had turned completely against his father. Every pickup day was drama. This day it was worse, Deborah and the boys were running late after having to get her car towed and everyone was in a foul mood. While Deborah was helping her seven year old son, Kurt, tie his shoes, Aaron found his backpack and climbed into the back of his dad’s SUV, in the seat directly behind him. 176: The Pop Culture of the Michael Peterson Case

176: The Pop Culture of the Michael Peterson Case

The pop culture of the Michael Peterson case is fascinating. There are many infamous true crime cases that create their own universe. The Peterson case was always going to be famous. But when Netflix bought the rights to Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s docu-series, The Staircase, Michael Peterson and his family were launched into the stratosphere. There were already books…but after Netflix reopened the saga, we have every form of media jumping on the Peterson bandwagon. Including a sitcom. Outside of South Park lampooning OJ Simpson, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a murder case inspiring a comedy show with the likes of John Lithgow starring. What does this say about us as a society? How far should “journalists” go to keep trying to get interviews years after the man served his time. How long should his children be chained to this case? I’m not saying I have the answers. I just think it’s interesting to ask these questions. 173: The Neverending Staircase: The Death of Kathleen Peterson, PART 1

December 9th, 2001 was an unseasonably warm night in Durham, North Carolina. At 2:40 a.m., a novelist named Michael Peterson called 911. He was frantic. He said his wife Kathleen had an accident. She had fallen down some stairs. Within 10 minutes, paramedics, police and the fire team swarmed the house. They were all startled by the amount of blood. Kathleen’s blood was everywhere. It covered her body, the staircase, and the floor. Soon, homicide detectives were called to the scene. Introducing Season 2 of Suspect: Vanished in the Snow, by Wondery & Campside Media

For more than three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie. Jonelle’s face had been on milk cartons nationwide. Even the President of the United States had appealed to the public for help. Still, every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end. Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn’t stop obsessing over Jonelle’s disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT.Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder. 166: Rapist & Serial Killer: Henry Louis Wallace

From 1992-1994, a serial killer stalked young black women in Charlotte, North Carolina. Police came under fire from families and the media once the killer was unmasked. They blamed being understaffed during a crack epidemic, insisting that most of their murder victims were black and they had a good solve rate. As these were young college students, some young mothers and not really involved in the drug epidemic, their families were rightly outraged. There would be plenty of blame to go around to the cops and the courts when serial killer and rapist, Henry Louis Wallace was finally unmasked. 165: I95 Killer or Serial Killer: Gary Ray Bowles

165: I95 Killer or Serial Killer: Gary Ray Bowles

In the spring of 1994, the southern and eastern seaboard states were terrorized by a serial killer using the I-95 corridor to travel between states and victims. Six gay men were targeted by a drifter, working as a hustler, who would stay in their homes for a week or so…gaining their trust, before violently murdering them. He then took their credit cards and vehicle to move on to his next victim. But the famed serial killer, Gary Ray Bowles, would later insist he killed seven men, but the FBI or state of Florida declined to investigate his 7th victim. There is a murder, still a cold case, which happened a decade before, that eerily matched his 1994 murders. And may have helped Bowles perfect his modus operandi. That day, he murdered a man, something he’d done many times before. However, this time, Wallace made a grave mistake: he committed the murder just over the Coweta County line.
