Brief Outline:
Many times people come to me and they feel like their content isn't converting because of their captions.
They sit down to write and it feels like they are just winging whatever they're putting down and the post it.
PERFECT! FEWF! Content posted for today!
Ehhh... not quite...
If you are sitting down and THEN coming up with what you want to talk about - let me let ya in a little secret - you are doing this BACKWARDS!
Your content should be created with an intention in mind - who are you making it for? Why are you making it for them? What do you want them to do after seeing it?
This are the big three questions that you need to answer before even making the piece of content! This is what a social media content strategy is.
It's planned out content topics with intention behind it prior to making the content itself!
That way, you can predict EXACTLY what result you will get after each post.
So most of the time, when people have a "captions" issues, they actually have a deeper rooted problem.
Which one of those three questions do you not have the answer to prior to writing your post? One? Two? Three? All of the above?
THAT is your sales problem - it's not because your captions are boring!
This is why I focus on all foundational elements of business with all my clients prior to actually talking about content ideas!
Because in order to be successful on social media, you first need consistent business foundations, deep knowledge of your Ideal Customer, and a complete Brand Essence outline!
You need foundational elements before you can create any marketing strategy.
THAT is the main problem with captions!
However, crappy captions are out there & I see them every day... so let's talk about some actionable steps that you can take today to make your captions more engaging!
1) EMOTION:
Once your branding is outlines & you know what mood/feeling you want to create with your brand, then you need to add that in to your caption!
This is called "Brand Voice" you need to add adjectives and pizazz to your captions that help evoke that emotion!
2) HOOK:
A hook is the first line of the caption that makes people WANT to read more!
SPOILER: "Happy Monday" is NOT a hook!!
This hook should be intriguing. It should make people WANT to read more! These should be almost click bait-y!
There are TONS of hook prompts within my Creating Converting Captions Workbook that you can download for free: CLICK HERE
3) Call To Action:
A better word for CTA is actually a "Call For Engagement". What are you wanting people to do with this post? How do you want them to engage with it?
People are 25% more likely to do something if you ask them to do it!!
You can see a 300% in your engagement by adding Call to Action!
Quite literally tell your audience how you want them engage - save, share, follow, read, click, etc!
So to summarize:
Yes, there are bad captions out there. There are actual elements to a good caption.
However, most of the time it is a deeper issue like around lack of ideal customer knowledge, branding, or content strategy that actually creates a caption issue!
You can convert sales if you have a strategy behind it with a bad captions. But you can't convert with a killer caption and no strategy... because you have NO idea the who, the what, or the why...
Hope that was helpful!
