SPOS #958 – Greg Epstein On How Technology Became Religion
Welcome to episode #958 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Greg Epstein is not your average chaplain. As the Humanist Chaplain at both Harvard University and MIT, Greg bridges the gap between spirituality and secular life, offering a unique perspective that resonates deeply in today’s rapidly evolving world. With a rich background that spans philosophy, ethics, and humanism, Greg has become a beacon for those seeking meaning beyond traditional religious frameworks. In this conversation, Greg dives into his new book, Tech Agnostic - How Technology Became The World’s Most Powerful Religion, And Why It Desperately Needs A Reformation (his first book is: Good Without God - What A Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe). Picture this: technology has ascended to the status of a global deity, worshipped and unquestioned. Greg challenges this reverence, urging us to adopt a stance of skepticism and agnosticism towards our digital overlords. He doesn’t advocate for abandoning technology but rather for a thoughtful and ethical approach to its integration into our lives. Greg draws on his extensive experience advising corporations, government agencies, and non-profits to highlight the ethical dilemmas posed by unchecked technological advancement. He likens the current tech-driven era to a modern-day religious movement, complete with its own set of beliefs, rituals, and moral codes. However, unlike traditional religions that offer community and purpose, technology often isolates us, fostering a superficial connection that lacks depth and genuine human interaction. Throughout our conversation, Greg emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and ethical accountability in shaping the future of technology. He challenges leaders and innovators to ask the tough questions: Who benefits from this technology? What are the unintended consequences? How can we ensure that advancements serve the greater good rather than narrow interests? Tech Agnostic is more than just a critique of our tech-obsessed society; it’s a call to action for a reimagined relationship with technology - one that prioritizes human values, ethical integrity, and meaningful connections. Greg’s insights are both timely and timeless, offering a roadmap for navigating the complexities of our digital age with wisdom and compassion. If you’re grappling with the pervasive influence of technology in your personal or professional life, Greg’s perspectives offer a refreshing and necessary counterbalance. His work serves as a reminder that amidst the rapid advancements and digital transformations, our humanity remains our most valuable asset. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:01:19. SPOS #957 – Brigid Schulte On Transforming The Daily Grind Into A Better Life
Welcome to episode #957 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Brigid Schulte is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author who has spent her career delving into the intricacies of modern life, particularly the challenges of balancing work, love, and play. With nearly 17 years at The Washington Post, where she was part of a team that won The Pulitzer Prize, Brigid has written for a myriad of publications including The Atlantic, The Guardian, Time, and Slate. Her work often focuses on the unsustainable pace of our always-on culture and the societal narratives that shape our perceptions of success and fulfillment. In this conversation, Brigid discusses her latest book, Over Work - Transforming The Daily Grind In The Quest For A Better Life (her first book was, Overwhelmed - Work, Love, And Play When No One Has Time). She explores how, despite advancements meant to make life easier, many of us feel more pressed for time than ever. The pandemic, she notes, has been a catalyst in reshaping our understanding of work and its true value. It has highlighted stark disparities between knowledge workers who can work remotely and low-wage workers who often face systemic barriers to advancement. Brigid challenges the long-held belief that longer hours equate to better work, emphasizing that this narrative is flawed and detrimental. Workers today are increasingly seeking meaningful and dignified work, and leadership plays a crucial role in shaping a culture that supports this. We delve into how technology, while disruptive, also has the potential to create new job opportunities - but only if we rethink how we value different types of work. If you're interested in understanding the complexities of modern work culture and exploring actionable ways to create a more balanced and fulfilling life, Brigid's insights are both enlightening and timely. By focusing on skills as the new currency of work, organizations can become more agile, resilient, and adaptable. SPOS #955 – Michael Morris On Tribes And Togetherness
Welcome to episode #955 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Michael Morris is a renowned cultural psychologist at Columbia University, where he teaches in both the Graduate School of Business and the Psychology Department. With previous teaching stints at Stanford University and a rich educational background from the University of Michigan and Brown University, Michael has dedicated his career to exploring how culture shapes the way we think, communicate, and collaborate. His research delves into the idea that while our genetic programming primes us to learn from our communities, the actual content of what we learn is deeply influenced by the cultural environments we're immersed in. In our conversation, Michael discusses his book, Tribal - How The Cultural Instincts That Divide Us Can Bring Us Together. He challenges the often negative connotations associated with tribalism, aiming to reclaim the term by highlighting its positive aspects. Michael explains that tribal psychology is an inherent part of human nature, encompassing instincts for solidarity, imitation, and the perpetuation of traditions. While tribalism can lead to division and conflict, he argues that these same instincts can also foster unity and collective action when harnessed constructively. We delve into real-world examples, including recent tribal conflicts and protests at institutions like Columbia Business School. Michael sheds light on why individuals engage passionately in such issues and how tradition and nostalgia play significant roles in tribal dynamics. He emphasizes that technology and social media aren't solely to blame for societal divisions - rather, these platforms amplify existing human tendencies rooted in our psychology. If you're curious about how our cultural instincts shape our interactions and how we can leverage them to bring people together, Michael's perspective provides a thoughtful and hopeful outlook. Lightspeed powers some of the world's best businesses across over 100 countries, helping them accelerate growth, enhance customer experiences, and become go-to destinations in their markets. With a team of over 3,000 employees, Lightspeed has made significant strides under Dax's leadership, including going public on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. After serving as Executive Chair of Lightspeed's board for two years, Dax returned as CEO in February 2024, bringing with him a renewed vision for the company's future. During our conversation, Dax delves into the evolving landscape of retail and hospitality, emphasizing how these industries are increasingly focusing on providing experiential elements that cater to people's desire for unique experiences and social interaction. He believes that while technology plays a crucial role in modern commerce, the human touch remains indispensable. Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Dax is deeply passionate about environmental conservation. He founded the Age of Union project, an initiative aimed at reconnecting people with nature and spirituality. Through this project, Dax has traveled to various parts of the world, immersing himself in different cultures and gaining a deeper understanding of social and environmental issues. Our conversation also explores the current polarization in society and the impact of social media on politics. Dax expresses concern over the divisive nature of online platforms and the need for more balanced, nuanced conversations. Dax highlights the often-overlooked value of the "middle journey" in business - the day-to-day efforts and experiences that constitute the core of what companies do. He believes that true fulfillment comes from engaging in this journey rather than just focusing on the end goals. Throughout our conversation, Dax emerges as a leader who is not only focused on driving business success but also deeply committed to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and fostering meaningful human connections. His insights offer a thoughtful perspective on how businesses can navigate the complexities of today's world while remaining grounded in values that promote sustainability and community. SPOS #953 – Erin Clark On Activating The Soul, Heart, And Mind Of Leadership
Welcome to episode #953 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Erin Clark is a managing director with Deloitte Consulting's Human Capital practice, where she specializes in helping clients improve performance, drive change, and create sustainable advantages through people. With a deep commitment to unlocking human potential within organizations, Erin has dedicated her career to transforming workplaces into environments where individuals and teams can thrive. In her new book, Leading Through - Activating The Soul, Heart, And Mind Of Leadership (co-authored with her father, former Harvard Business School dean Kim Clark, and her brother Jonathan Clark), Erin explores the dynamic shift needed in leadership for today's rapidly changing world. The book delves into the struggle between traditional leadership paradigms - rooted in control, hierarchy, and bureaucracy - and a new model that emphasizes empowerment, trust, and collaboration. During our conversation, Erin discusses how the pandemic and technological advancements like generative AI have accelerated the need for this leadership transformation. She emphasizes that while we're living in a digital, transparent, and complex era, many organizations are still clinging to outdated methods that stifle innovation and suppress human potential. Erin introduces the concept of "leading through," which focuses on activating the soul, heart, and mind of leadership to create a culture where people are motivated to solve tough problems and make meaningful contributions. We explore the importance of leaders embracing a more human-centric approach, one that not only cares for people but also consciously seeks to do good and make things better. Erin highlights that leadership is both deeply personal and systemic - it requires individual growth as well as organizational support to foster an environment where employees can excel. She also touches on the challenges of short-termism and the pressure to meet market expectations, which often hinder long-term development and human sustainability. Erin's insights shed light on the necessity of preserving humanity in the face of rapid technological change. She advocates for leveraging technology as a tool for value creation while ensuring that it doesn't overshadow the human element that is crucial for innovation and organizational success. SPOS #952 – Karthik Ramanna On Outrage And Our Polarized World
Welcome to episode #952 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. We are beyond polarized. Karthik Ramanna has spent his career helping leaders make sense of a world that’s constantly changing. As a Professor of Business & Public Policy at Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government, Karthik's work explores the difficult intersections of business, politics, and society. With a keen eye on trust-building, corporate responsibility, and the complex dynamics between organizations and their stakeholders, Ramanna has earned a reputation as one of today’s foremost thinkers on leadership in challenging times. In his latest book, The Age Of Outrage - How To Lead In A Polarized World, Karthik delves into a growing issue that leaders everywhere are facing: navigating outrage. And it’s not just the occasional outburst we’re talking about. As companies like Disney, United, and Meta have learned, outrage has become an ever-present force — fueled by societal anxieties and a growing expectation for companies to act as agents of social change. Karthik’s take is that outrage - whether justified or not - has shifted from being an occasional PR crisis to a core leadership challenge. Leaders are now expected to handle these emotional, high-stakes situations with the same rigor as strategic planning or financial management. And if you’re a leader in today’s world, you’ve likely felt the pressure. Drawing on years of experience and case studies ranging from the Vatican to Nestlé, Ramanna doesn’t offer quick fixes or hollow calls for “staying neutral.” Instead, The Age of Outrage offers a practical, mission-driven framework for leaders to cool tensions, engage meaningfully with stakeholders, and make decisions that are both effective and consistent with their organization’s core values. If you’re wondering how to navigate an increasingly polarized landscape, Karthik’s book offers more than just insight — it’s a guide for how to emerge stronger from the very challenges that threaten to tear organizations apart. SPOS #951 – Nick Bostrom On Life And Meaning In An AI World
Welcome to episode #951 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #951. When it comes to thinking big about artificial intelligence, I think about what Nick Bostrom is thinking. A philosopher widely known for his thought leadership in AI and existential risk, Nick has spent much of his career asking the kinds of questions most of us avoid. As the founding Director of Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute and a researcher who has dabbled in everything from computational neuroscience to philosophy, Nick’s intellectual curiosity knows no bounds. His 2014 book, Superintelligence (a must-read), became a New York Times bestseller, framing global discussions about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. But now, with his latest book, Deep Utopia - Life and Meaning in a Solved World, Nick shifts the conversation to a more optimistic angle - what happens if everything goes right? Deep Utopia tackles a question that feels almost paradoxical: If we solve all of our technological problems, what’s left for humanity to do? Nick presents a future where superintelligence has safely arrived, governing a world where human labor is no longer required, and technological advancements have freed us from life’s practical necessities. This isn’t just a hypothetical playground for futurists... it’s a challenge to our understanding of meaning and purpose in a post-work, post-instrumental society. In this conversation, Nick explores the philosophical implications of a world where human nature becomes fully malleable. With AI handling all instrumental tasks, and near-magical technologies at our disposal, the question shifts from "How do we survive?" to "How do we live well?" It’s no longer about the technology itself but about our values, our purpose, and how we define meaning when there are no more problems left to solve. Nick’s book is not just a call to prepare for the future; it’s an invitation to rethink what life could look like when all of humanity’s traditional struggles are behind us. As he dives into themes of happiness, pleasure, and the complexities of human nature, Nick encourages us to reimagine the future - not as a dystopia to fear, but as a deep utopia, where we must rediscover what it means to be truly human in a solved world. This stuff bakes my noodle. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 49:48. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. SPOS #950 – Stephen Shapiro On How To Pivot In An Uncertain World
Welcome to episode #950 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #950. My good friend, Stephen Shapiro, is not one to take the standard approach to anything. As the former leader of Accenture’s business process reengineering practice, he realized that optimizing business efficiency was leading to layoffs - a direction he didn't want to pursue. So, instead of continuing on that path, Stephen pivoted. He built Accenture’s 20,000-person innovation practice and refocused his efforts on growth and job creation. From there, Stephen became a full-time speaker and author, helping organizations from 3M to Nike rethink how they tackle innovation. In our latest conversation (he has been on the show multiple times), Stephen shares insights from his new book, Pivotal - Creating Stability In An Uncertain World. It’s all about anchoring yourself in what shouldn’t change, even as everything else spins around. He likens it to a basketball pivot - one foot stays planted while the other moves, creating both stability and flexibility. Stephen argues that, too often, businesses are caught chasing the next shiny thing, while what truly matters gets neglected. Instead of scattering resources, Stephen suggests that organizations focus on deepening their core strengths and identifying their differentiators. It’s the planted foot - the foundation - that holds the key to long-term success. We also discuss the importance of creating a culture that supports slow, thoughtful innovation, rather than the kind of chaotic sprinting that leaves teams burned out. Companies like Apple are great examples, doubling down on services and ecosystems that reinforce their unique strengths. Stephen emphasized that the best innovation isn’t always fast - it’s about having the patience to focus on the right direction. He is also the author of many other books (here are two other that I love: Invisible Solutions, Best Practices Are Stupid) and his game, Personality Poker. Enjoy the conversation... SPOS #949 – Stephanie Harrison On The New Happy
Welcome to episode #949 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #949. Stephanie Harrison, founder of The New Happy and author of New Happy - Getting Happiness Right In A World That's Got It Wrong, is flipping the happiness script. For years, we’ve been sold the idea that happiness comes from checking off the "big three" — wealth, fame, and power — and doing it all solo. But as Stephanie’s research shows, we’ve had it wrong. Real happiness? It’s not about the corner office or the number of zeroes in your bank account. It’s about something far more sustainable: helping others. In New Happy, Stephanie gets to the core of what’s holding us back from true fulfillment - those old myths that tell us we’re not good enough, that happiness is a prize only the elite get to win. Instead, she lays out a blueprint for living with purpose, using our unique talents to make a difference in the world. The best part? Her advice isn’t just feel-good fluff - it’s backed by a decade of research and wrapped up in beautifully designed illustrations that bring these life-changing concepts to light. Our conversation dives deep into why social media, for all its flaws, can still be a tool for connection - if we use it the right way. Stephanie’s insights on gratitude, personal gifts, and living authentically are spot on. She makes it clear: happiness isn’t a destination you reach by ticking off goals; it’s a byproduct of living in line with your values and making an impact on others. Stephanie’s message is refreshing, smart, and just the kind of advice leaders and individuals need these days. If you’ve ever wondered why happiness seems just out of reach, New Happy will show you a new way forward - one where you don’t have to sacrifice success to feel fulfilled. Enjoy the conversation... SPOS #948 – Scott Young On How To Get Better At Anything
Welcome to episode #948 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #948. Scott Young is the kind of person who doesn’t just ask, “How do I get better at this?” He asks, “How do we really learn anything?” That question led him on some fascinating paths - like the time he decided to tackle MIT’s computer science curriculum without ever setting foot in a classroom. No big deal, right? It’s this relentless curiosity that drives Scott’s work, and he’s made it his mission to break down the mystery behind learning and mastery. In this conversation, Scott digs into his latest book, Get Better at Anything - 12 Maxims for Mastery. This isn’t your standard “how-to” guide. Scott’s approach is both simple and profound: learning doesn’t have to feel like you’re banging your head against a wall. He argues that three things really matter when it comes to leveling up - seeing how others do it, putting in the right kind of practice, and getting feedback that’s actually useful. If you nail these three, progress follows. It’s that simple… but, of course, the devil is in the details. Scott’s no stranger to experimentation. From his MIT Challenge to learning four languages in a year during his Year Without English project, he’s someone who lives what he preaches. He’s constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible with learning, and his insights into how we can accelerate our progress - whether at work, in our personal lives, or even in the smallest tasks—are both practical and inspiring. We also touch on some big questions, like how AI might change the way we learn and work. Is AI the future of education? Scott’s got a way of making the complex simple, and our chat is packed with insights that make you rethink how you approach learning. If you’ve ever struggled to get better at something or wondered if there’s a more effective way to improve, Scott’s ideas are definitely worth hearing. Scott was on the show a few years back to dicuss his first book (which is another “must-read” titled, Ultralearning). Scott also has an amazing program with another one of my favorite thinkers, Cal Newport, titled Life Of Focus for you to check out. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:08:40. John Mackey, co-founder of Whole Foods Market and its CEO for 44 years, is no stranger to transforming industries. With his new memoir, The Whole Story, John takes readers on an intimate journey through the rise of an iconic company that didn't just succeed in business but sparked a retail and dietary revolution. Whole Foods Market began as a small, idealistic endeavor in Austin, Texas, and under John’s leadership, it grew into a $22 billion-a-year behemoth that forever changed the way we think about food. But The Whole Story isn’t just about business - it's a candid exploration of John’s personal and spiritual journey, from his early days immersed in counterculture to his evolution into a champion of Conscious Capitalism. In our conversation, John reflects on the pivotal moments that defined his career and the cultural impact of Whole Foods. He shares how the company challenged the norms of the food industry by prioritizing quality, natural, and organic products long before they were mainstream. But he also opens up about the missteps, the near-disasters, and the lessons learned along the way. We discuss the acquisition of Whole Foods by Amazon, a move that John describes as the best solution to the challenges his company faced, and the importance of embracing competition and continuous learning. Throughout, John’s dedication to improving health and advocating for conscious business practices shines through, as does his belief in the power of open-mindedness and adaptability. John offers more than just a behind-the-scenes look at Whole Foods - it’s a thoughtful reflection on his spiritual and philosophical growth, from New Age mysticism to life-changing experiences with psychedelics, and how these influences shaped his approach to business and life. For those who admire Whole Foods and its mission, this show provides a deeper understanding of the man behind the brand and the values that drove its success. SPOS #946 – Frederik Pferdt On How To Live Future Ready
Welcome to episode #946 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #946. Dr. Frederik Pferdt has spent his career helping some of the most creative minds at Google - and beyond - shape the future. As Google's first Chief Innovation Evangelist, he didn’t just observe the future unfolding; he actively shaped it. Frederik founded Google's Innovation Lab, where he coached tens of thousands of Googlers in the art of innovation, fostering a culture that thrives on curiosity, empathy, and experimentation. His work has resonated far beyond Silicon Valley, with collaborations ranging from NASA to the NBA, and teaching stints at Stanford University that inspired a new generation of thinkers. In his book, What's Next Is Now - How to Live Future Ready, Frederik challenges the notion that the future is something we passively encounter. Instead, he invites us to see it as something we actively create. He distills his philosophy into six principles: optimism, openness, curiosity, experimentation, empathy, and something he calls "Dimension X" - the unique way each of us perceives the world. This isn't just a framework for surviving the future; it's a guide to thriving in it. During our conversation, Frederik dives into how these principles aren't just abstract concepts but actionable strategies that anyone can apply. He emphasizes that the future is crafted by the choices we make today, and by cultivating a "future-ready mindstate," we can turn ambiguity and uncertainty into opportunities. From collecting dots — ideas, experiences, and learnings — to connecting them in innovative ways, Frederik explains how we can stay ahead in a rapidly evolving world. Frederik also touches on the importance of predictive empathy, which helps us understand the potential consequences of emerging technologies, and how embracing uncertainty is crucial for personal growth. He shares insights on how to counter the cynicism that often accompanies aging by intentionally choosing curiosity and optimism. Our discussion explores the transformative power of mindfulness practices like silent meditation retreats and the value of experimentation in cutting through the hype of the present moment. SPOS #945 – Matt Beane On Saving Humanity In The Age Of Intelligent Machines
Welcome to episode #945 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #945. Matt Beane isn’t your typical academic tucked away in a library. As an Assistant Professor in the Technology Management Program at UC Santa Barbara, he’s out in the trenches, observing firsthand how robots and AI are transforming the workplace. From robotic surgery to warehouses where machines pick and pack products, Matt has spent years immersed in environments where the stakes are high, and the impact of automation is undeniable. But Matt’s not just a researcher - he’s a storyteller who connects the dots between complex technologies and the human experiences they’re reshaping. Before diving into academia, he took a detour to help launch Humatics, a startup linked to MIT that’s pushing the boundaries of IoT technology. His work has landed in top academic journals and mainstream outlets like Wired and Harvard Business Review, and his TED Talk on robotic surgery has been viewed almost two million times. In his new book, The Skill Code - How To Save Human Ability In An Age Of Intelligent Machines (special for you… if you click the link, Matt is giving you the first chapter of the book free), Matt delves into the subtle yet powerful forces that drive how we learn skills. Drawing from years of field research, he outlines the three C’s - challenge, complexity, and connection - that form the bedrock of effective skill development. These aren’t just abstract concepts; they’re the real-world dynamics that get disrupted when AI and robots take over tasks traditionally handled by humans. Matt’s current work is all about bridging the gap between technology and human capability. He’s keenly aware that while machines can handle more tasks than ever, they can’t replace the nuanced, mentor-apprentice relationships that have historically been the engine of skill development. The Skill Code is a roadmap for navigating this new landscape - showing us how to harness intelligent machines without losing the very things that make us skilled and adaptable. Whether you’re navigating the evolving landscape of work or just curious about how we can stay sharp in an AI-driven world, Matt’s insights offer a practical and thoughtful approach to ensuring that technology enhances, rather than diminishes, our human potential. SPOS #944 – David De Cremer On AI Savvy Leadership
Welcome to episode #944 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #944. David De Cremer, the Dunton Family Dean at the D'Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, is passionate about the intersection of technology and leadership. With a rich background in psychology and behavioral economics, David has dedicated his career to understanding how emerging technologies, especially AI, can transform businesses while keeping people at the heart of it all. He's worked across the globe, guiding leaders on how to effectively and responsibly integrate AI into their organizations. David's journey is rooted in a deep curiosity about human behavior and a passion for leadership. He’s held prestigious positions at places like the National University of Singapore and the University of Cambridge, where he founded the Centre on AI Technology for Humankind. This wealth of experience has given him unique insights into the challenges and opportunities that AI presents. In our conversation, we dive into his latest book, The AI Savvy Leader - Nine Ways To Take Back Control And Make AI Work. David addresses a critical issue: Many leaders today are handing over control of AI strategy to their tech teams, which can lead to a disconnect between AI initiatives and overall business strategy. His book offers a practical guide for leaders to reclaim their role in the AI transformation. It’s not about becoming a tech lead... it’s about applying timeless leadership skills — like creating a vision, effective communication, and strategic execution — in the context of AI. David emphasizes that AI should be a tool to enhance decision-making and efficiency, not a replacement for human judgment. He shares stories from his work, highlighting both the successes and pitfalls of early AI adoption. The core message is clear: Leaders need to stay engaged and proactive, ensuring that AI aligns with their organization’s values and goals. David’s approachable and insightful perspective makes complex topics accessible. He reminds us that while technology evolves rapidly, the fundamental principles of good leadership remain constant. SPOS #943 – Stephen Shedletzky On Speak-Up Culture
Welcome to episode #943 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #943. My friend, Stephen Shedletzky (everyone calls him Shed) is on a mission to revolutionize how leaders listen and how organizations function. With a career dedicated to fostering environments where voices are heard and valued, Shed's journey began with a jarring experience at his first corporate job, where he witnessed the devastating effects of poor leadership and a lack of psychological safety firsthand. This formative experience ignited his passion for creating workplaces where people feel safe to speak up. In his book, Speak-Up Culture - When Leaders Truly Listen, People Step Up, Shed dives deep into the nuances of building a culture that encourages open communication. He emphasizes that a speak-up culture isn't about constantly voicing opinions but about ensuring it's safe and worthwhile for individuals to share their ideas, feedback, and concerns. During our conversation, Shed shares insights from his extensive experience working with leaders to develop these environments. He highlighted the critical role of humility, respect, and emotional intelligence in leadership, and how these values can transform an organization's culture. Shed’s work with Simon Sinek and his global team has equipped him with unique insights into leadership and culture. He has seen how leaders who genuinely listen and create spaces for dialogue can foster innovation, safety, and high performance. Speak-Up Culture is a practical guide for leaders at all levels, from senior executives to aspiring leaders. It offers strategies to create environments where people feel heard and valued, leading to better organizational outcomes. The book is a testament to Shed’s belief that great leadership involves more than just strategic thinking — it's about creating a culture where every team member feels empowered to contribute to the organization's success. In our conversation, we delved into the challenges of fostering a speak-up culture in today's climate, where fear and anxiety can stifle open communication. Shed shares his thoughts on the importance of feedback, the delicate balance between happiness and fulfillment, and the need for leaders to remain humble and open to feedback. We also touched on the evolving nature of workplaces, particularly with the rise of remote and hybrid work, and the importance of finding new ways to maintain connection and serendipity. By embracing the principles outlined in his book, leaders can transform their organizations and create a better version of humanity. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:02:38. Speak-Up Culture - When Leaders Truly Listen, People Step Up. Follow Shed on LinkedIn. Follow Shed on Instagram. Follow Shed on X. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways Creating a speak up culture is about making it safe and worth it for people to share their ideas, feedback, concerns, and mistakes. A speak up culture is not about speaking up all the time, but about creating an environment where it is safe and encouraged to speak up. In the current cultural climate, it is important to have more humility, forgiveness, and space for dialogue. Cultures can change based on who is leading them, and it is important for leaders to create an environment where respectful disagreement and debate are encouraged. The shift towards remote and hybrid work requires finding new ways to create moments of serendipity and connection. Encouraging people to speak up and rewarding them for doing so are key actions in creating a speak up culture. Whistleblowing is often a last resort when internal speak up attempts fail, and it requires courageous leadership. The pursuit of fulfillment, rather than happiness, should be the goal in the workplace. Visionary leaders may not always possess the qualities of effective leadership, such as compassion, empathy, and accountability. Humility is a crucial attribute for leaders, as it allows them to acknowledge their strengths and limitations and be open to feedback. SPOS #942 – Michael Norton On Rituals And Habits
Welcome to episode #942 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #942. Harvard Business School professor, Michael Norton, knows a thing or two about human behavior. His research dives deep into behavioral economics and well-being, covering everything from happiness and spending to the fascinating world of rituals. Michael’s work has been spotlighted in major media outlets and his TED Talk, How To Buy Happiness, has racked up close to 5 million views. He’s also known for his co-authored book, Happy Money - The Science of Happier Spending. Now, he's back with his latest book, The Ritual Effect. In our conversation, Michael explores the impact of rituals in our daily lives and the broader implications for businesses and society. Michael explains that while habits are the repetitive tasks we perform automatically, rituals are those same tasks imbued with intention and meaning. This shift from a “habitual” mindset to a “ritual” mindset can transform mundane activities into something much more significant. We touch on the distinction between habits and rituals, and how rituals, unlike habits, add depth and color to our lives. Michael shares insights from The Ritual Effect, where he uncovers how rituals help heal communities, mark life’s major transitions, and even drive sports fans to a frenzy. Michael emphasizes the importance of understanding different perspectives and the role of rituals in creating a sense of purpose and connection. We also discuss the practical aspects of rituals and how they can be used to enhance both personal and professional lives. Michael's research shows that rituals, whether they're as simple as the way we savor a beverage or as complex as family traditions during holidays, bring surprising satisfaction and enjoyment. The Ritual Effect is a compelling reminder of the power of intention-filled acts and their impact on human behavior and our business. Whether you're looking to add more meaning to your daily routines or understand the deeper significance of rituals and how they impact your work, Michael's insights offer a fresh perspective on how we can live and work more purposefully. Rituals can be found in various domains of life, from religious ceremonies to everyday activities like drinking coffee. Rituals can enhance our emotional experiences and add richness to our lives. Superstitions are a subset of rituals and are often associated with avoiding something bad. Rituals can be both unifying and divisive, depending on how they are perceived and practiced. Taking an inventory of our rituals can help us recognize their presence in our lives and potentially add more meaning and emotion to them. Rituals have the power to create meaning, build connections, and shape our behavior. Organizations should deliver on their promises and create meaningful experiences to build loyalty and engagement. Rituals play a significant role in relationships and family dynamics, helping to create a sense of connection and shared meaning. SPOS #941 – Alex Edmans On How Our Biases Cause Us To Fall For Misinformation (And How To Combat It)
Welcome to episode #941 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #941. He is a finance professor at London Business School, and Alex Edmans knows his stuff. With a background that spans Morgan Stanley and a PhD from MIT, Alex's insights on corporate finance, responsible business, and behavioral finance are top-notch. He's a TED talk star, with millions of views, and his research has been featured everywhere from the World Economic Forum to the UK Parliament. In our conversation, Alex dives into his latest book, May Contain Lies - How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases – And What We Can Do About It (he is also the author of Grow The Pie and Principles of Corporate Finance). We explore the tricky terrain of our post-truth world and the fine line between fact and fiction and conspiracy theories. Alex breaks down the role of statistical significance and why simple messages can be so appealing — and misleading. It's not just about the facts... it's about how they get twisted. We also tackle the financial incentives that drive misinformation. Alex is big on critical thinking and urges us all to look beyond the surface. He explains the ladder of mis-inference, making it clear why we need to understand the differences between statements, facts, data, and evidence. We get into the weeds about peer review in academic research and the biases that can creep in. Alex talks about the internet's role in spreading misinformation and how social media can create echo chambers. He’s all about teaching critical thinking early and often. I loved reading May Contain Lies... and it really is more than just a book - it's a guide to navigating the murky waters of modern information. Alex uses real-world examples to show how biases distort our views and decision-making. He offers practical tips to cut through the noise and think smarter. So, if you're tired of being misled and want to make better decisions (and, who isn’t always fooled by “facts”?), take a listen. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:00:43. May Contain Lies - How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases – And What We Can Do About It. Grow The Pie. Principles of Corporate Finance. Follow Alex on LinkedIn. Follow Alex on X. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways The concept of a post-truth world goes beyond the question of whether something is factually true or not. It also includes the potential for misleading inferences drawn from accurate information. Statistical significance can help evaluate the reliability of claims, but it is important to consider the broader context and potential biases in interpreting the results. Simplistic messages that align with people's pre-existing views are more likely to be accepted and shared, even if they lack scientific rigor or evidence. The prevalence of misinformation is driven by financial incentives and the desire for quick fixes and easy solutions. While misinformation poses challenges, there are also opportunities for more nuanced and informed discussions, particularly among open-minded individuals who value scientific consensus. AI can be both a solution and a problem in addressing misinformation, as it can help identify scientific consensus but also be used to spread false information. Peer review is a useful but imperfect process for evaluating the accuracy and quality of academic research. Being discerning consumers of information requires recognizing our own biases and questioning the validity of statements, facts, data, and evidence. Teaching critical thinking from a young age is essential to combat misinformation and make informed decisions. Being discerning does not mean being overly suspicious, but rather applying critical thinking to important decisions and recognizing the limitations of evidence. SPOS #940 – Bob Tapscott On The Tech Trivergence
Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #940. I’ve had his brother (Don Tapscott) and nephew (Alex Tapscott) on the show countless times. We might as well extend the invitation to Bob Tapscott. Bob has a knack for diving into the deep end of tech and coming up with pearls of wisdom. With a background as a CIO, speaker, and consultant, Bob’s journey spans nuclear power maintenance, Wall Street derivatives, and flying commercial aircrafts by computer. He’s the go-to guy for developing and implementing disruptive strategies that actually work, focusing on corporate performance and customer satisfaction (meaning: He’s the person that is building the tech we all talk about). Bob delves into what he calls the second era of computing - where computers don't just follow orders, they learn, ask questions and show us what we need. It’s a “game-changer” (and I hate that word!), driven by the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Bob breaks it down: We're seeing an growth in computing power that's reshaping our world. AI isn’t just about making things faster - it’s about making things smarter. The company with the most data will have the smartest systems, and that’s a big deal. But with great power comes great responsibility (thanks, Uncle Ben!). We talk about the potential for job displacement and the societal challenges that come with these advancements. It’s not just about the tech... it’s about the frameworks we need to guide its implementation responsibly. Our conversation touches on the exciting and somewhat daunting possibilities of AI, like the development of generative AI tools and the role of startups in this evolving landscape. Bob is particularly keen on the ethical implications - how do we ensure these technologies benefit society as a whole? And let’s not forget the international angle. Tech doesn’t respect borders, so collaboration is key. Bob’s new book, Trivergence - How Ai, Blockchain, And The Internet Of Things Are Ushering In A New Digital Age, is all about navigating this brave new world. He explores the synergies between AI, blockchain, and IoT, showing how these technologies can work together to transform business and society. It’s not a tech manual... it’s a guide for making smart decisions in a world full of uncertainties. Bob talks about the power of Infinite Data - where AI, powered by vast datasets, can generate insights and value without human intervention. It’s fascinating and a must-read for anyone looking to stay ahead of the curve. Bob unpacks these concepts with a mix of technical insight and practical wisdom. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or a business leader, there’s something here for you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:04:20. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Takeaways The second era of computing is characterized by computers being able to ask and learn, rather than just being programmed. The exponential growth in computing power, driven by blockchain and AI, is transforming society. Data is crucial for AI development, and the company with the most data will likely have the most intelligent system. The implementation of AI and other technologies could lead to job displacement and societal challenges. Thoughtful frameworks and discussions are needed to guide the responsible and beneficial use of these technologies. The development of AI tools like chat GPT is impressive and has the potential to outperform human capabilities in certain tasks. The growth of data is exponential, and it presents both opportunities and challenges in the field of AI. The consolidation of AI power among big tech companies is likely, but startups can still find success by focusing on specific domains. The ethical implications of AI, including autonomous killing machines, raise concerns and the need for careful regulation and oversight. The impact of AI is not limited by geographic borders, and international collaboration is crucial for addressing its challenges and maximizing its benefits. SPOS #938 – Johann Hari On The Promises and Perils of Weight-Loss Drugs
Welcome to episode #938 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #938. He’s back! Johann Hari, the bestselling author and celebrated journalist, is known for diving deep into the human condition, from addiction to depression to our scattered attention. His books, translated into 40 languages, have earned praise from the likes of Oprah, Elton John, and Noam Chomsky. Now, Johann is back with his latest book, Magic Pill - The Extraordinary Benefits And Disturbing Risks Of The New Weight-Loss Drugs, and it's sparking conversations everywhere. In our lively chat, Johann opens up about his latest journey, one that began with him injecting himself with Ozempic, a new weight-loss drug. Imagine losing up to a quarter of your body weight in just six months. Sounds like magic, right? But Johann wasn't entirely convinced. He dove into this world with a mix of hope and skepticism, exploring whether these drugs are a miraculous solution or just another illusion. Johann breaks down the good, the bad, and the ugly of these new drugs. On the plus side, they offer significant health benefits for those struggling with severe obesity, potentially reducing risks of diabetes, cancer, and early death. But, and it's a big but, they come with their own set of risks and side effects. Johann didn't just stop at the surface - he traveled from Iceland to Minneapolis to Tokyo, talking to top experts and uncovering twelve major potential risks that come with these seemingly wonder drugs. Our discussion also takes a broader look at the roots of the obesity crisis. Johann points out how our shift from whole foods to processed junk has played a huge role. He explains why diets often fail in the long run — our bodies are biologically programmed to resist weight loss. So, while these drugs might help, they’re not a silver bullet. Johann also emphasizes the need to tackle the social causes of obesity. It’s not just about popping a pill. We need to rethink our relationship with food and our bodies. We talk about the evolutionary reasons why our bodies hoard fat, the food industry's role in pushing sugar-laden products, and the emotional aspects of eating. Magic Pill isn’t just another book on weight loss - it’s a thought-provoking exploration of our modern health dilemmas. Johann's blend of personal experience, thorough research, and engaging storytelling makes this book a must-read. Whether you’re curious about the science behind these new drugs or their cultural impact, Johann provides a comprehensive guide to understanding this health revolution. With that he also the author of sone of my favorite books: Stolen Focus - Why You Can’t Pay Attention - And How To Think Deeply Again, Lost Connections, and Chasing The Scream. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:08:04. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation. Chasing The Scream. Follow Johann on X. Follow Johann on Instagram. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways Weight loss drugs can offer significant benefits in terms of health outcomes, particularly for those who are severely obese. The rise of obesity is linked to the shift from whole foods to processed and ultra-processed foods. Diets often fail in the long term due to biological changes that make it harder to maintain weight loss. While weight loss drugs can be a solution, addressing the social causes of obesity is crucial for long-term change. There is a need for regulation and careful consideration of the risks and benefits of weight loss drugs. Human beings evolved in an environment where famine was a frequent threat, so our bodies are programmed to store fat. This makes it difficult to reverse obesity. The food industry and our craving for sugar contribute to the obesity crisis. Cultural and societal changes, such as promoting healthy eating habits and providing nutritious food in schools, are crucial in addressing the obesity crisis. Economic factors, such as the death of the middle class and shareholder primacy, have had a significant impact on work-life balance. Generational differences exist in work-life balance perspectives, with younger generations seeking greater personalization and flexibility in their work. Setting and respecting boundaries is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Culture plays a vital role in shaping work-life balance, and organizations need to consider individual needs and values. The gamification of work can have both positive and negative effects on work-life balance. In-person interactions and connections are valuable for fostering work-life balance. Integrating productivity into work-life balance is a complex challenge that requires finding ways to be productive without sacrificing personal time. Leaders should strive to be coaches, providing support, empathy, and constructive feedback to their team members. Takeaways The concept of the ideal worker, who prioritizes work above everything else, can be detrimental to employee well-being and work-life balance. The pandemic has highlighted the need for a more flexible and adaptable approach to work, including remote work options. Implementing changes in the workplace, such as shorter workweeks and improved communication practices, can lead to increased productivity and employee satisfaction. Government regulations and the involvement of unions may be necessary to ensure fair and equitable work practices. Work-life balance is a challenge in the modern work environment, and the concept of a mandated 40-hour work week may not be feasible in the US. Psychological detachment from work is important for overall well-being and has been linked to positive outcomes such as work engagement and restful sleep. The rise of hustle culture has led to the monetization of hobbies and side hustles, but it is important to find a balance and avoid obsession. Takeaways Being remarkable is about creating a distance between your brand and the competition, and making an emotional connection with customers. Leaders need to aim higher and move faster in order to stay relevant and avoid becoming irrelevant or extinct. Technology enables access to information and substitutes, making it crucial for businesses to differentiate themselves and provide value beyond price. Leaders must understand the factors that impact their business and be agile in responding to a volatile and uncertain environment. Creating a sense of urgency and embracing change are essential for driving innovation and staying ahead of disruption. Success anomalies can be misleading and it is important to analyze them critically and not draw general conclusions from them. Attracting and inspiring talent is crucial for the success of a company, and it is important for leaders to create a culture that values and leverages the unique gifts of their employees. Brands taking a stance on social and political issues can be a complex and risky endeavor, and leaders need to carefully consider the impact on their customers and stakeholders. Physical retail still has a role in a digital world, particularly for experiential and social shopping experiences, but it needs to evolve and provide unique value to customers. SPOS #931 – Peter Winick Debates Mitch Joel On The Art And Business Of Thought Leadership
Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #931. What is a thought leader? What does thought leadership look like? How do you become a thought leader? I’ve spent decades fascinated by people who undertake the job of either creating or building on great ideas (mostly in business). It’s what led me to start ThinkersOne and it’s the same thing that keeps me inspired to show up here - week after week - and have these types of conversations. This week, we’re doing something a little bit different. I reached out to Peter Winick - the founder and CEO of Thought Leadership Leverage and host of the Leveraging Thought Leadership Podcast - and asked him if he would mind leading a conversation on the business of thought leadership. We were both eager to discuss and debate the value of thought leadership, the changing landscape of book publishing, building a personal brand, the power of thought leadership in corporate settings, the role of social proofing and more. We both agree that it’s all about relationship development, balancing vanity metrics and strategic networking, developing thought leadership skills and leveraging thought leadership for business opportunities. We explore the importance of creating mid-tier products, amplifying thought leaders' voices, and democratizing intellectual property. The conversation delves into building a sustainable thought leadership business, using thought leadership as a business generation strategy, and the real money in thought leadership. While we both might not love the title of “thought leader” we both agree on the value of people who chose the importance of lifelong learning, content creation, and balancing creativity with business strategy as a profession. SPOS #925 – Russ Neuman On How AI Will Make Us Smarter
Welcome to episode #925 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #925. The transformative impact of artificial intelligence on business and society is going to be a technological shift unlike anything we have ever experienced. Russ Neuman, a distinguished scholar in new media and digital education, is currently a Professor of Media Technology at New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. With a storied career that spans from the University of Michigan to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Russ has been at the forefront of understanding and shaping the digital landscape. Russ' recent book, Evolutionary Intelligence - How Technology Will Make Us Smarter, delves into the complex relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence (a topic that is near and dear to my heart). How can we better navigate the myriad perspectives on AI, from its potential to disrupt employment and amplify polarization to its capacity for enhancing human decision-making and fostering societal advancement. In Evolutionary Intelligence, Russ offers a refreshing counter-narrative to the doom-laden discourse surrounding AI. Russ argues that, rather than fearing the emergence of AI, we should embrace its potential to augment human capabilities and address the cognitive limitations that have bounded humanity since its hunter-gatherer days. By integrating AI into our daily lives — from laptops to headsets — Russ envisions a future where computational intelligence complements human judgment, empowering individuals to adapt to rapidly changing environments. As we delve into Russ's latest book and his extensive research on media technology's impact on society, we have a challenging and thought-provoking discussion that might upend your preconceived notions about AI and offers hope for a smarter, more collaborative future. In an era where the buzz around artificial intelligence swings dramatically between utopian promises and dystopian warnings, Russ stands out with a refreshingly balanced perspective. Unemployment due to AI may be a gradual transition, and the impact on social unrest may be mitigated by the creation of new jobs. AI has the potential to amplify polarization and hate speech, but efforts are being made to identify and filter such content. The alignment problem in AI raises questions about control and the ability to ensure that AI systems align with human values. The future of work will involve collaboration between humans and AI, with AI augmenting human capabilities rather than replacing them. The redefinition of intelligence and the exploration of new models of decision-making are key to the future of AI. Mistakes and challenges are expected in the development of AI, but the hope is that we will learn from them and ultimately get it right. The impact of media technology on society is profound, influencing various aspects of our lives, including politics, culture, and communication. SPOS #924 – Coco Krumme On The Illusion Of Optimization
Welcome to episode #924 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #924. In her new book, Optimal Illusions - The False Promise of Optimization, Coco Krumme embarks on a compelling journey to unravel the influence of optimization in our society. Coco's diverse pursuits - from running a craft distillery on a rural island to making sculptures and flying a small airplane - give her analysis a unique perspective (far removed from the standard academic fare on the subject). With that, she is an applied mathematician with an impressive background, including a Ph.D. from MIT and significant experience in academia and tech. Optimization, a principle initially rooted in mathematical theory, has dramatically reshaped our world. It dictates everything from the efficiency of airline schedules to the algorithmic matches on dating sites to how we figure out our best days. Optimal Illusions is a fascinating read, as Coco explores the history of optimization, highlighting its journey from America's founding principles to its application by oil tycoons, wildlife ecologists, Silicon Valley technocrats, lifestyle gurus, and beyond. This exploration reveals a complexity where the quest for efficiency - while yielding undeniable benefits - has also led to significant trade-offs, compromising resilience, limiting options, and narrowing perspectives. Coco's work in scientific computation provides her with an intimate understanding of the pitfalls of optimization's reach. She argues that while optimization may offer short-term gains in efficiency, it ultimately fosters a society that is less adaptable and more homogenous. The book challenges readers to consider the hidden costs of optimization - from the erosion of human creativity and flexibility to the potential for creating systems that are fragile and prone to failure. For anyone intrigued by the intersection of technology, society, and human behavior, this episode is for you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 46:16. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Takeaways: The future of work is shifting towards an open talent model, where individuals have the freedom to work on specific tasks and projects rather than being tied to traditional roles. Companies need to adapt to this new model by rethinking their organizational structures, embracing remote work, and creating platforms that connect talent with opportunities. Continuous learning and upskilling are crucial in an open talent world, as individuals need to stay relevant and adaptable to changing demands. Platforms play a crucial role in connecting skilled individuals with opportunities in the open talent market. Generative AI has the potential to significantly impact the open talent landscape, enabling faster and more efficient task completion. Concerns about economic collapse and commoditization arise in the open talent market. Team building and community remain important in an open talent framework, fostering collaboration and connection. In a transformative era for the global workplace, Lisen Stromberg guides leaders towards creating more inclusive and innovative work cultures. As the CEO and Co-founder of PrismWork, Lisen has dedicated the latter half of her career to reshaping the way businesses approach leadership and workplace dynamics. Her latest contribution to this work is her new book, Intentional Power - The 6 Essential Leadership Skills for Triple Bottom Line Impact (co-authored with Corey Jones and JeanAnn Nichols), which serves as a compass for those navigating the complexities of modern leadership. The book emphasizes the importance of empathy, inclusivity, and strategic leadership in achieving a triple bottom line impact. It also outlines six essential leadership skills crucial for navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the future of work. From the impact of AI on various professions to the rejection of traditional educational paths, Lisen and her co-authors explore the multifaceted nature of leadership in the 21st century. Lisen's journey from a successful career in marketing to a leader in culture innovation and leadership transformation is marked by a critical insight: The work environment matters as much as the work itself. This realization propelled her towards establishing PrismWork, where she and her team have been instrumental in fostering workplaces that not only prioritize productivity but also embrace diversity and inclusivity as core values. In this episode, Lisen (who also authored, Work Pause Thrive) breaks down the current shift in workplace culture (and what we need to do about it). She delves into the nuances of building inclusive cultures amidst the tensions of wokeism, the fragility of the economy, and the evolving nature of capitalism. With the rise of "power skills" in job descriptions and the competitive job market's demand for deep culture, Lisen's insights offer guidance for leaders striving for excellence in a rapidly changing world. She also deep-dives on the rise of women entrepreneurs and the impact of motherhood on career trajectories. By advocating for Intentional Power, she underscores the need for leaders to wield their influence with purpose and empathy, shaping a future where work is not just about profitability, but also about creating value for all stakeholders. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways: The meaning of work and workplace culture have dramatically changed, driven by a new generation of talent with a collaborative and inclusive approach. Building inclusive cultures requires the development of power skills such as humility, empathy, accountability, resiliency, transparency, and inclusivity. The future of capitalism lies in stakeholder capitalism, which focuses on meeting the needs of a myriad of stakeholders and creating sustainable long-term solutions. Leadership is not limited to those at the top; individuals at every level have a role and responsibility in shaping workplace culture. The impact of AI on the future of work raises concerns about job displacement and the need for continuous learning and adaptation. The “middle years” of the future of work are a critical period that requires careful navigation to avoid negative consequences. While there is a growing rejection of college education, essential careers such as plumbing, electricians, nurses, and doctors will still be in demand. Supporting humans in the future of work requires a shift towards capitalism for good, where meaningful services and support are provided to employees. Empathy is a crucial trait for leaders, and there are three types of empathy: cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and compassion empathy. The optionality of employees and the shift in power dynamics in the workplace require a focus on ‘power with’ rather than ‘power over’. The rise of women entrepreneurs highlights the need for better support and infrastructure for freelancers and self-employed individuals. SPOS #918 – David Rogers On The Digital Transformation Roadmap
Welcome to episode #918 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. In an era where digital transformation is not just a buzzword but a survival strategy, David Rogers is a world-renowned expert on digital transformation and a distinguished member of the Columbia Business School faculty. He has authored five influential books, including his latest, The Digital Transformation Roadmap, which dives deep into the challenges and strategies crucial for organizations navigating the rapid currents of digital change. David addresses a critical concern: Why do 70% of businesses falter in their digital initiatives? His answer is a clarion call to organizations worldwide — transformation is not just about revamping products... it's about reinventing the organization itself. David presents a five-step roadmap that guides businesses through the continuous tumult of digital innovation, a methodology resonating with his extensive work with global corporations like Google, Microsoft, and Visa. It's not about the technology, he argues, but about strategy, leadership, and a paradigm shift in thinking. This philosophy, first introduced in his landmark bestseller, The Digital Transformation Playbook, has been a guiding light for numerous organizations, and is now more relevant than ever. The five steps of digital transformation are defining a shared vision, picking the problems that matter most, validating new ventures, managing growth at scale, and growing technology, talent, and culture. Centralized and decentralized platforms are a topic of discussion in the digital era, with implications for social media, databases, and more. Blockchain and AI have limitations and should be applied strategically to solve specific problems. The future of AI holds both opportunities and challenges, and it will redefine knowledge and identity. SPOS #910 – Ana Lorena Fabrega On School And How To Love Learning
Welcome to episode #910 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #910. Ana Lorena Fabrega, an innovative force in the world of education, has made significant strides in reshaping how we perceive and engage with learning. With a background that spans multiple countries and diverse experiences, Ana’s journey in education is as unique as it is inspiring. Growing up, Ana attended ten schools in seven countries, an experience that undoubtedly influenced her global perspective on education. Her foray into teaching was fueled by a firm belief in lifelong learning and the desire to nurture children's natural love for discovery. Yet, her time in the classroom led to a growing disillusionment with traditional educational models. Ana observed that conventional schooling methods often quash the inherent curiosity and joy of learning in children, prompting her to leave her teaching job in search of alternative approaches to education. Ana’s disillusionment with the traditional education system is evident in her critique of its outdated ideologies. She argues that schools often restrict natural learning environments, hampering children's ability to explore their talents and think independently. Her book, The Learning Game, encapsulates these ideas, offering readers practical tools to redesign learning approaches that go beyond the conventional school system and prepare young minds for life's diverse challenges. In her quest to redefine learning, Ana emphasizes the power of story-driven education. She believes that humans are naturally inclined to learn through stories, which are more engaging and relatable than abstract concepts or formulas. This approach aligns with her view that education should be fun, captivating, and practical, providing learners with relatable role models and real-world applications. Today, Ana serves as the Chief Evangelist at Synthesis, an innovative online learning platform for curious and ambitious kids. Synthesis employs game-based learning strategies, scaling up ideas from Ad Astra, a school co-founded by Elon Musk. This role aligns perfectly with her passion for building learning alternatives that break traditional molds and foster genuine enthusiasm for learning. Ana's work, both as an author and an educator, is a testament to her commitment to transforming the educational landscape. Her approach to learning is refreshing and necessary in a world that increasingly values creativity, innovation, and adaptability. Along with that, she’s also kind of a big deal on Instagram.
