On the day after I asked my wife to marry me, I sat next to her and made a promise.
I promised her that no matter how hard I had to work... no matter what it took or what we had to go through... I was going to become successful enough to support her so she could raise our future children.
At this point - I had NO idea how I would do it.
We were flat broke. We could barely afford to put food on the table, let alone have kids and let her stay at home to raise them.
But I made her a promise... and I keep my promises.
She's worth every second of struggle we went through in the early days...
Since I had a degree in human psychology, I realized that wouldn't cut it.
I've always been fascinated by how the mind works and why people make certain decisions, so wrapping my life around that strength seemed like a good idea.
So I Became A Direct Response Copywriter...
My typical day looked like this:
Get up at 5:30 a.m., working on my business until I had to leave around 7:30 for work.
Work all day, bringing salesletters with me so I could edit them during down times
Get out of work, shower, and leave for job #2
Work until about 10 p.m., again working on my business during down times at my day job
Eventually I left my job and made the leap to making my business full-time.
Within my first full year as a direct response copywriter, I was outperforming people charging 5x what I was. Within 2 years I was outperforming people charging $15,000, plus royalties, for a single salesletter.
Needless to say, I fulfilled my promise to her. She's able to stay home and raise these amazing little boys below (and the crazy dogs) and focus on THEM, with zero money worries
But Becoming A "Copywriter" Was Just Step 1...
One day after analyzing my strengths and weaknesses - it clicked.
I realized that my strength wasn’t just keeping people glued to my writing, it was combining innovative marketing strategies and positioning tactics (like building a sales funnel) with world-class copy.
While most "copywriters" focus on writing - I focused on the things that made more of an impact. The big ideas. The positioning. The congruency between products. The back-end. Simple followup systems.

With the support of my wife as my coach, my friends, family and mentors as my guides, I decided to do something I had never done before.
It is 8am. I have trained 8 months for this; competing against more than 30,000 people from 116 countries. I am speaker number 8 during the final round of competition on the 88th anniversary of Toastmasters, out of 88 districts around the world and the date is August 18th (8/18).
After the final speaker, we sit with the other 2,000 people in the audience and wait 30 minutes to hear the announcement. My heart is pounding, my palms are sweaty and then I hear it…. “The 2012 World Champion of Public Speaking is… Ryan Avery!”
I guess you can now say my new lucky number is…8.
The next morning, I woke up to 269 emails asking me to speak, coach and train leaders all over the world on how to improve their communication abilities. My wife, friends, family and mentors, showed me things are possible when you surround yourself with the right people and they push you past your limits of what you think you were able to accomplish.
I wanted to travel the world and start right away but I was still working at Special Olympics and didn’t want to quit as I loved what I did for a living. However, I started to see that there is a huge opportunity in this world for people wanting training and we can always be growing, learning and developing our leadership skills.
So after long months of talking, thinking, contemplating and debating, my wife and I decided to take the risk and start our own public speaking business in 2013. We quit our jobs, sold everything we owned except what fit in our car, traveled to Texas to move back in with my parents at 26 years old (true Millennials) and start our company out of a corner in their home. Six months later we got on our feet, moved out and now live in Denver, CO (when you want the hour version of this story, let me know and we can grab a drink).

This has been an incredible adventure. I still have a lot to learn. Every day I study, search and submerse myself in the art of communication. One of the biggest things I have learned in the past three years doing this full time is this:

Now I am on a mission to train leaders how we can utilize the power of storytelling to get others to take action.
I believe we all have the opportunity to do something in our life that can bring us joy and help others excel. During one of my failed attempts at a recent world record my friends taught me what it means to really feel accomplished and what it means to be the leader: when your actions inspire others to take action, you are the leader.
I am taking charge or my life. I am taking chances. I am taking action. Together, if you will let me, I want to share my journey with you, share strategies and stories with you, via my trainings or blog, of what I am learning and have learned along the way to help us accelerate our achievements.

By the end of 1996, I was working at the home office of Wall Street Financial Group, eventually rising to Chief Operating Officer. In 2002 I was hired to develop a small independent firm which eventually became Ensemble Financial Services, which I ran until 2010. Against all odds: The saying "been there, done that" rings true for Marx Acosta-Rubio. That's not to say he doesn't have room to grow. But over the years, he's encountered almost every roadblock possible. The day in 1998 that Acosta-Rubio was fired from his job was the day before he launched Onestop and set in motion a series of obstacles, including a hysterical relative trying to renege on a loan, failure to collect a year of receivables, a lawsuit and a negligent CFO. But Acosta-Rubio says, "It's those lessons that make us who we are today."
Competitive edge: From the beginning, Acosta-Rubio has kept up with the big names by using a "customer intimacy model," he says. "Our competitors focus on price and availability, but we discovered a market that craves service." His employees contact clients before they need toner cartridges or other office supplies, and they do it over the phone, which is a rarity in this automated, web-based industry. Acosta-Rubio's former employer, who is one of his major competitors today, "did $27 million last year with 112 salespeople; we did $16 million with 14," he says. "Whose model is better? We need to focus on the human aspect of employees and customers."
In retrospect: Like many entrepreneurs, Acosta-Rubio never imagined he'd be where he is today--owner of a multimillion-dollar, 30-employee company. Even so, would he have done anything differently? "Absolutely, 100 percent!" he says. "I would have tried harder, taken bigger risks and made even more mistakes."
Follow his lead: Don't let the fear of failure hold you back from making mistakes--and learning from them.

What is your secret to success?
Acosta-Rubio: There are two components. One is based on a quote by one of my mentors, author and speaker Jim Rohn: "Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune." I think it was my voracious appetite for learning what I didn't know that was the biggest part. So get as much education, both formal and self, as you can.
The other component is based on a quote by author and entrepreneur W. Clement Stone that says failure takes longer than success. The only way to succeed is through massive failure. We live in a society where we're conditioned to be afraid of making mistakes. But if you're only going to be perfect, you're never going to do well.
What advice would you give other entrepreneurs?
Acosta-Rubio: Again, two things. The first is, don't delude yourself. Not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur. If you don't have an overwhelming obsession, a passion for something you believe the world needs or has to hear, it's not you. You're probably an amazing human being, but I would focus my energies elsewhere. You're an entrepreneur if you can't stop talking about what it is you want to do or what has to change.
Second, don't do it for the money. I made the mistake of starting to change my direction to focus on the bottom line, and my company started to suffer. My relationships with my employees started going down the toilet, and my company didn't grow as fast. You've got to make it about the obsession of what it is you're here to do, and the money will follow.
When did you know you'd "made it"?
Acosta-Rubio: I still don't know! I got to a point two years ago where I thought, "I have arrived! I am wonder boy! I'm a multimillionaire!" But then I almost fell into depression. I thought, "Is this all there is?" I don't think you ever make it. I think if you can wake up on a daily basis and be excited that you have opportunities and challenges and problems, you're making it.

Michael O’Neal
I'm originally from Ohio, and lived there for 12 years. Grew up Catholic (I'm a recovering Catholic now) and played every sport known to man when I was a little kid. Became a Steelers fan back then. Steel Curtain and all that. Got in a lot of trouble in school too. (No surprise to those of you that know me). At 12, we moved to a little 'burb outside Philadelphia where I was one of three gentiles in the entire town. I had an entire drawer of Yamikas. That was great...they were warm on my head and velour.
In between 10th and 11th grade my parents decided it would be a great idea to move down to a little redneck town in Florida called Spring Hill, which I hated for every second I was down there. (Well, except for you Renee...you rocked.) In fact, I think my bags were packed on stage as I accepted my high school diploma.
I bolted back to Philly and had stops in Newark DE, Long Beach Island NJ, and Palm Beach FL, where I graduated from music school. I then finished up undergrad at Temple University in Philly and studied communication, and this new thing called the "Internet". (It was 1994).
I became a web designer, and worked that field for 15 years. I still do design and development, but only if you hold a gun to my head. In 1997 I moved to Boulder Colorado, and have lived there and in Denver for almost 13 years, until 2012 when I moved to San Diego. After a few brief stints working for other people, I found myself to be truly unemployable around 2005, and have been on the entrepreneurial track ever since.
From 2004-2008, my parents would fall ill, and basically "level" me in all aspects of my life. Emotionally, financially, etc...They both passed away in 2007, just 7 months apart.
I tried to "muddle" through 2008, and didn't have much success. But I decided to take actual time to mourn, so in 2009, thanks to my wonderful friend Melanie, I went to Europe to spread their ashes everywhere I could. You see, I had a "dream" as an adult to surprise my parents with a trip to Europe, so this was my best substitution. So, I got a little Italian Parmesan Cheese shaker, and I ventured off into the wild blue yonder. And they are *everywhere*. In the Sistene Chapel, the Beaches of Normandy, Notre Dame...you name it, they're there.
I arrived back in the States, healed, broke, and happier than I'd been in years. But I knew that I no longer wanted to trade a dollar for an hour, so I went looking for something else. That's when network marketing and internet marketing found me. It's been 4 years since I found that world, and the transformation it's made in my life has been nothing but profound. I've met amazing people in the network marketing, internet marketing, life coaching, and entrepreneurship world. Every single day I learn from them and they impact me.

003: Ted Prodromou
My career started way back in 1980, after I moved west from a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania. I was 21 and Silicon Valley was the best place for me to find a job in the computer golden-gate-2industry so off I went.
I worked for incredible companies like IBM, DEC and Cellular One, all industry leaders at the time. I got my foot into the computer industry just as it took off in the 1980’s. I moved into computer networking as it evolved then moved into the cellular industry when cell phones were bigger than a brick.
In the late 1990’s, during the dot com boom, I started my own consulting firm because I wanted to spend more time with my family. My business took off and I had the flexibility to drive my kids on field trips and coach their soccer, basketball, softball and baseball teams. I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.
When the dot com crash hit in 2000-2001, my business collapsed and my twenty year career in the high tech world ended abruptly. My safety net was gone and my previous jobs disappeared. At age 40, I needed to start my career over.
I started building websites for small business owners, doing search engine optimization and online advertising. My business was back on track again.
Then the financial collapse in 2008 affected my business again. Many of my clients went out of business and the survivors stopped spending money. I was lucky enough to find a full-time job doing online marketing and SEO for a software company in 2009. I managed online advertising around the world and loved my job.
Once again, my career took another abrupt turn in early 2013 when my job was outsourced during a restructuring. I’m back on my own again, loving my freedom.
