Philip Muscatello - Australian Investor Education
We're all investors in the share market, either directly or through our superannuation. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the markets yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark. In Shares for Beginners, you'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain key concepts of investing in the ASX, the NASDAQ, S&P500, FTSE and Dow. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for. We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term. For more Information go to: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/How is your superannuation linked to the Australian & US stock markets? It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of stocks and shares, and recommend reading "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.I explore the basics - what a share is and how to buy one, and delve into the world of value investing, exploring strategies to identify undervalued stocks. I cover key terms like ASX (Australian Securities Exchange), CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), ASX200 (Australian Securities Exchange 200 Index), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), LICs (Listed Investment Companies), Managed Funds, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), as well as the difference between passive and active investing. There are many traps for beginner investors and it's good to be aware of the role and risks of options, warrants, CFDs (Contracts for Difference), day trading, bonds, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the difference between fundamental and technical analysis.Tracking your investments is essential, and it's important to know about watchlists, understand dividends and dividend reinvestment plans (DRPs), while exploring robo-investing, fixed income, index funds, and micro-investing.I cover topics like trading and buying shares, making money from shares, and understanding the Australian stock exchange. What is the role of stockbrokers and online brokers and how to buy and sell shares.I've interviewed industry experts and collaborated with Superhero, Stockspot, Caleb Silver Investopedia, Spencer Jakab from The Wall Street Journal, Pearler, Sharesight, Magellan, Saxo, Morningstar, QAV, Equity Mates, Owen Rask, Strawman, Motley Fool, Stockopedia, Betashares, Vanguard, Van Eck, Roger Montgomery, Tony Kynaston, Gemma Dale, Betsy Westcott, Molly Benjamin, Liz Tian, Andrew Baxter, Simon Ree, Wisr, Ladies Finance Club, Strong Money Australia, Captain Fi, Fred Schebesta, Kylie Purcell, Australian Shareholders' Association, Jessica Amir, Jordan Eliseo, Shani Jayamanne, Vic Jokovic, Scott Phillips, Mark Monfort, Andrew Page, and Claude Walker.Shares for Beginners is a production of Finpods Pty Ltd. Quick Tip - What's an Annual General Meeting?
An AGM is an opportunity for regular shareholders like you and me to hold directors to account. Fiona Balzer works tirelessly organising the volunteer company monitors of the Australian Shareholders' Association.ASA has a dedicated team of company monitors who meet with company chairs and directors to discuss issues of importance to retail shareholders. ASA monitors prepare voting intentions, having regard to ASA's Voting and engagement guidelines, and they attend AGMs on behalf of members and retail shareholders.I have another podcast called AGM Watch that covers the work of these monitors. You can have a listen to see what's covered in an AGM https://www.australianshareholders.com.au/podcastsFor more information on the advocacy work of the Association go to https://www.australianshareholders.com.au/advocacyPortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Quick Tip - Buying Your First Share
A Quick Tip from Doug Morris from Sharesight about making your first share purchase and using it as part of your learning experience. Only invest a small amount and then read everything you can about the company. The companies he mentions are all US stocks but the same lessons go for companies on the ASX."Look for a company you're familiar with, that you use on a daily basis. Is there a statement from a trained analyst saying the value of this company is x and the shares ought to be trading at y? That might be a company you should consider investing in."Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Ted Richards - Six Park Online Financial Advice
Ted was a guest on one of my first episodes. I wanted to chat again. In these days of DIY investing it's easy to forget that financial advice is now within the reach of smaller investors. It may not be the cheapest option but it could fast-track your investing knowledge. We discussed this in the context of recent market mania about meme stocks and "stonks".Episode Blog Post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/ted"Stonks are popular companies that are mostly traded by retail investors, not institutional investors. They're often companies that you and I may use a lot. They get these huge share price increases, and often without any fundamental business catalyst behind why the share price is spiked so sometimes they're referred to meme stocks, even story stocks. And there's a lot of money, that has been flooding into these and to be honest, I think a lot of the biggest reason for it is a bit of FOMO, you know, their brands or people understand share prices going up. So people fight into it and the likes of Elon Musk and Dave Portnoy have been tweeting specifically about the word stonks and that's even fueled this even more and kind of made this investing approach and I use the word investing approach loosely."Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. If you're here because you heard the then check out some of my back catalogue here - https://pod.link/1451778025. Otherwise it felt good to share our investing "moments". I hope you enjoy.Episode Blog Post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/mates"The Australian stock market is 2% of the global market. For every great Australian company, I can name an even better international equivalent. When Bryce and I started investing, international shares were difficult. They were really expensive and most of the time, you just couldn't access most markets. And what we've seen over the last even just five years is accessibility and costs have come down so much, and it's now just as easy to buy an American share or European share as an Australian share. And so, for us it feels like a no brainer. If we look around, you know, in this room what we're using, but more generally what we use in our lives, it's Apple computers, and we search on Google, we use Microsoft products. We want to invest in what we know, and more and more of what we know are overseas listed companies." Kylie Purcell - start young, even if you're not.
Just start investing. My first share purchase was in a broker's office whereas Kylie bought her first company based on a tip on Youtube. This is an indication of how the world has changed since the dark ages, and the opportunities and possibilities available to investors right now. It's also a lesson in NOT taking your investment tips from Youtube. It's also about women learning about how to get started.Episode Blog Post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/purcell"There are more men and young guys investing in the stock market than women. And it's been that way for a long time. But the trends do show that that's changing, which is a really good thing. The fact that you can buy and sell shares online now I think is a really big step. I think the rise of online broking platforms has been a really good thing for women just to get in there and get started. And start young. I think it has to start when you're younger, especially for women. I think as you start to get older family, becomes important, jobs become important. And it's just a lot of effort to get into share trading, and it can appear to be risky. And you've got other priorities at that point. So I think educating your kids, your daughters would be a really big step. And starting at school as well. You know, I know a lot of boys schools in Australia do teach you about the stock market. I don't know any girls schools that do that. That could be a really big start."And happy 2nd birthday to the podcast! Thanks Kylie for sharing this special moment. LICs are Listed Investment Companies or sometimes referred to as LITs. Tony Kynaston of the QAV Investing Podcast, all-round great guy/investor joined me to explain what kind of beast an LIC is. It's like an ETF but with some very important differences. LICs have been around a lot longer than ETFs. Fiona Balzer - AGM Watch
What’s an Annual General Meeting? A Remuneration Report? And why are they important for investors? I’m joined today by Fiona Balzer from the Australian Shareholders’ Association to explain all. Episode Blog Post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/agmEach year the Australian Shareholders’ Association or ASA, monitors the performance of most of Australia’s ASX200 companies - protecting the rights of retail shareholders with a dedicated team of company monitors. These volunteer members meet with company chairs and directors, and attend AGMs to ask questions of importance to members and retail shareholders. ASA has 110 volunteer monitors – who come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many have expertise and life experience that contributes to their analysis of company performance – whether governance, financial or operational. The ASA also aggregates voting intentions, representing approximately 4 billion dollars of shareholder value with the ASA nominated as proxy. And those are some of the terms covered in this episode. It's basically about reminding Boards of Directors that there are small shareholders whose interests they need to look after. We've just completed a short season of podcasts where I've interviewed the company monitors about AGM highlights. It's called AGM Watch and it's available at this link; https://www.australianshareholders.com.au/podcasts. It's well worth a listen if you're interested in a deep dive into some of Australia's largest companies.Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Matt Joass - Maven Funds Management
Some people invest in managed funds, some work as a fundie. A few brave souls create their own fund from the ground up. In this episode we hear from Matt Joass as he shares his insights into the inner workings of the industry, fast-growing kiwi start-ups and traps to watch out for. Matt’s ideal investment is a small, fast-growing business, that is capital-light, with demand- and supply-side competitive advantages, high returns on incremental invested capital, little analyst coverage, deeply aligned management (typically founders), and that are top-dogs or first-movers in an emerging and important industry. Lastly, the company must be trading at a discount to Matt’s estimate of intrinsic value.Link to the blog post https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/mavenLink to Maven Funds Management - https://www.mavenfunds.com.au/Got something to say? Bonus Episode: Welcome to The Equity Investor Journey
I've partnered with the Australian Shareholders' Association to create a new podcast - The Equity Investor Journey. Here's an episode that I think you will enjoy by way of introduction. The ASA is a fantastic organisation that lobbies for the interests of shareholders as well as providing a wealth of investing education. This episode features Steve Mabb, a successful businessman turned full-time investor and now an ASA company monitor. In this episode he talks about how he uses ASX-listed ETFs to gain exposure to companies that aren’t listed directly on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).Our stock market is currently dominated by miners and banks. Great companies for sure — but unlikely to exceed the pace of growth of some of the “new economy” companies listed overseas in the years and decades ahead. As an Australian investor who wants exposure to international technology and real diversification, Steve describes the ETFs that he has invested in to widen his international exposure. Here's a link to the blog post for this episode with some more insights into the ETFs that we discussed - https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/equity and here's a link to The Equity Investor Journey Podcast - https://www.australianshareholders.com.au/podcastsPortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Mark Tobin - Coffee Microcaps
Mark Tobin has been passionate about finding "undiscovered" microcap stocks ever since he began his career as an equity analyst in Sydney. He's been hooked on uncovering these hidden gems and following their story and evolution. In spite of his obvious non-Australian accent and calling from South Africa, Mark has his finger firmly on the pulse of the smallest end of the ASX. He was a pleasure to chat with and I hope to get him back on. I still have so many questions and we only had a limited time to chat.Link to the blog post - https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/coffeemicrocapLink to Coffee Microcaps - https://www.coffeemicrocaps.com/Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Andrew Cornejo - Hazer Group
I think a lot of people are becoming tired of the constant news about "The Virus" and the effects on the markets. That's why I needed a change of pace. A refresher, if you will. I wanted to go back to first principles and show an example of what the share market is really all about - the allocation of capital to fund innovations that may change the way we do things and make all our lives better. That's why I've been wanting to interview Andrew for a while. He's the Chief Technology Officer and founder of Hazer. Here's an example of a company developing a disruptive technology in the industrial sector. In an era of decarbonisation, Hazer is developing processes that can take carbon out of the system and store and transport renewable energy. The blog post - https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/hazerHazer web-site - https://www.hazergroup.com.au/Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Tony Kynaston - Situation Normal
Is this your first global share market meltdown?I generally talk about markets in broad brush strokes. This is not a news podcast but I know there's a lot of anxiety around at the moment. Hence this episode. Blog post for this episode - https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/situation-normal.Tony & I recorded this on Wednesday March 11 after the Australian market dropped ~20% over the last 2 weeks. As I write this at 8:30am on Thursday March 12, Wall St has fallen another 6% overnight. Things are getting ugly. But as Tony points out this is situation normal. The problems are caused by the corona virus and the price of crude oil. Rob Gilmour, who you may remember from the first episode of this podcast, dropped around and gave a brief overview about what's happening with oil and why it matters. It's right at the end of the episode after Tony.TONY KYNASTON is a multi-millionaire professional investor. Thanks to the checklist system he developed, the average return on his portfolio over the last 20 years has been 19.5% pa. Tony's knowledge and calm analysis takes the guesswork (and trauma) out of share market investing.Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. David Kirk - Bailador
When we think of shares we generally think of single companies that are listed on the stock market. This is not always the case. I am pleased to welcome our guest David Kirk, co-founder & partner.David is the former Chief Executive of ASX-listed Fairfax Media Ltd., where he led the successful investment into a number of internet businesses including Fairfax’s acquisition of Trade Me and Stayz.
