Philip Muscatello - Australian Investor Education
We're all investors in the share market, either directly or through our superannuation. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the markets yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark. In Shares for Beginners, you'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain key concepts of investing in the ASX, the NASDAQ, S&P500, FTSE and Dow. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for. We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term. For more Information go to: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/How is your superannuation linked to the Australian & US stock markets? It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of stocks and shares, and recommend reading "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.I explore the basics - what a share is and how to buy one, and delve into the world of value investing, exploring strategies to identify undervalued stocks. I cover key terms like ASX (Australian Securities Exchange), CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), ASX200 (Australian Securities Exchange 200 Index), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), LICs (Listed Investment Companies), Managed Funds, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), as well as the difference between passive and active investing. There are many traps for beginner investors and it's good to be aware of the role and risks of options, warrants, CFDs (Contracts for Difference), day trading, bonds, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the difference between fundamental and technical analysis.Tracking your investments is essential, and it's important to know about watchlists, understand dividends and dividend reinvestment plans (DRPs), while exploring robo-investing, fixed income, index funds, and micro-investing.I cover topics like trading and buying shares, making money from shares, and understanding the Australian stock exchange. What is the role of stockbrokers and online brokers and how to buy and sell shares.I've interviewed industry experts and collaborated with Superhero, Stockspot, Caleb Silver Investopedia, Spencer Jakab from The Wall Street Journal, Pearler, Sharesight, Magellan, Saxo, Morningstar, QAV, Equity Mates, Owen Rask, Strawman, Motley Fool, Stockopedia, Betashares, Vanguard, Van Eck, Roger Montgomery, Tony Kynaston, Gemma Dale, Betsy Westcott, Molly Benjamin, Liz Tian, Andrew Baxter, Simon Ree, Wisr, Ladies Finance Club, Strong Money Australia, Captain Fi, Fred Schebesta, Kylie Purcell, Australian Shareholders' Association, Jessica Amir, Jordan Eliseo, Shani Jayamanne, Vic Jokovic, Scott Phillips, Mark Monfort, Andrew Page, and Claude Walker.Shares for Beginners is a production of Finpods Pty Ltd. Mathew Hodge - Morningstar | Finding your investing style

What's your investment style? What makes a good business? What makes a good investment? In this episode I'm joined by Matthew Hodge, Director of Equity Research for Morningstar Australasia. We spoke about learning to become a better investor, upgrading your own software, a couple of key ratios that help you understand company valuations and the importance of investing what you know and understand.“There are hoards of professionals out there who are spending their time doing this stuff, right? Like you can't compete with that. I occasionally go to a wine tasting group, right? And this wine tasting group is full of people who are working in the industry and tasting a hundred or 200 wines a week. I can't compete with that as an amateur. You have to know your limitations, right. But it's possible if you're interested and you learn and you figure out your niche and what you are looking for. What's your investment style? What makes a good business? What makes a good investment?.”Here's a link to the blog post and transcript: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/hodgeShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. QUICK TIP - Fixed Income - What is it, and how does it sit in a portfolio?

There are many asset classes with various risk profiles that investors need to be aware of. If you take a look at your super, you’ll often see Fixed Income in your investment options. This Quick Tip is with Camilla Love, the founder and Managing Director of ETF provider eInvest. We discussed fixed income, what to watch out for and what role is in a portfolio mix."If you're looking at a fixed income fund that is returning 6% or more per annum, you really need to lift that hood, look at what's in it and understand the volatility and return profile of fixed income because if fixed income's not there to be your insurance policy, it's there for something else, and you need to understand that when putting a portfolio together."If you're interested in the full episode tune in at : https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/einvestShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. Simon Shields - Monash Investors | Reporting Season

Simon Shields - Monash Investors | Reporting Season

What is reporting season and how do analysts and fund managers find the numbers to run the tape measure over a company? Australian listed companies share their financial reports twice a year, generally in February (half yearly), and the full year in August. They come out and talk about the results for the half or the full year with a presentation, and generally an outlook statement and that's reporting season. We have it in a six monthly period in Australia. Simon Shields is the Portfolio Manager and co-founder of Monash Investors. We spoke about his approach to reporting season, his style of investing and the ETM that his company runs, MAAT. You can find out more about Monash Investors at this link. Here's a link to the blog post and transcript: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/monashShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. QUICK TIP - What's an index and why is it important to look behind ETFs?

Just as you study a company before you buy it’s shares, you need to study ETFs and what they are comprised of before diving in. Simon Karaban is a Senior Vice President at SGX Singapore Exchange where he works creating indexes. Most passive ETFs are based on an index and Simon has plenty of insights behind the scenes. In this Quick Tip Simon warns about some ETFs that are designed only to attract investors. They may not have the best returns or they may not even be comprised of the kind of companies that you would expect in the description. It’s about looking under the hood to see the engine that’s driving the ETF. Is it going to provide the returns that you expect, and is it truly investing in what you think it’s investing in?Here's a link to the episode that this Quic Tip came from: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/karabanShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. Steve Symington - 7investing | Companies of the future v old time business

From the birth of disco (it was 1953!), capital raising, the tortoise and the hare, businesses blessed by bountiful accounting principles and the banking of the future. Steve covers a lot of ground in this episode. I've had this interview on the shelf since May, but it is still relevant in terms of the decline of technology stocks. I think it's also good to hear from US investors. As we know the ASX is 2% of world markets so it's always worth learning a little more about Wall Street. Steve Symington is a lead advisor for 7investing. He covers a wide variety of industries and publicly traded companies, but loves finding disruptive, responsible businesses chasing massive addressable markets. You can often find him lurking on Twitter. Companies discussed in this episode: SoFi Technologies & Markel - NasdaqGS:SOFI, NYSE:MKLShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. Zarmeen Pavri & Jeremy Liddle - SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund

Zarmeen Pavri & Jeremy Liddle - SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund

What are the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and how can investing help to achieve them? What's the difference between ESG & Impact Investing? What we do as investors matters. Across the different asset classes, we find a spectrum of impact – from negative to positive – that needs to be addressed. The solutions are not clear-cut. We live in a complex world, and while it’s easy to blame oil, gas and animal farming for a majority of the emissions, if we were to stop drilling for oil, using gas and herding cattle today, our civilization would collapse tomorrow. A significant amount of people would starve or freeze to death within days. This is why decarbonization require a system-wide transformation. Financial markets have the unique opportunity to drive this transformation and start a phase shift. Capital is the enabler for innovation and prosperity. By leveraging the right strategies transformational impact can be created that serves the planet, people and profits.Jeremy Liddle and Zarmeen Pavri work in the Venture Capital space and run SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund. Simon Shields is the Portfolio Manager and co-founder of Monash Investors. We spoke about his approach to investing, an overview of the recent reporting season, the difference between focussing on absolute and relative returns and the early warning triggers they use to reduce exposure to companies in their fund that may be facing challenges to their share price. You can find out more about Monash Investors at this link: https://monashinvestors.com/Before co-founding Monash, Simon spent 25 years as an analyst, portfolio manager and head of equities for large fund management businesses. Unusually for a professional fund manager, he was fortunate to move between firms that had widely differing investment styles of growth, value and DCF approaches. Introducing ETFs for Beginners

Introducing ETFs for Beginners

I’d like to introduce you to a new podcast called ETFs for Beginners. My co-host is Ana Kresina. She’s much better on Instagram than me and you can follow us there by going to @etfsforbeginners. ETFs deserve their own podcast. They can represent a different style of investing altogether, or they can be part of portfolio that includes both individual shares and ETFs. Either way there’s a lot to talk about. I’m also enjoying working with Ana who is a devotee of long term boring compounding investing. She also doesn’t break Instagram the way I would. https://play.acast.com/s/etfs-for-beginnersWe are excited to be publishing our first episode with an actual guest! Jessica Leung from Betashares. In this episode Jessica explains how one of the best ways to start out with ETFs is with a broad market cap weighted index. So you're essentially getting the market, the whole of the ASX 200. She also explained why she decided to create content on social media, to raise awareness of financial literacy. Who better to speak in this space than a person actually managing an ETF themselves. You can find her in Instagram and TikTok via @theleungwayHere's a link to a recent article from Jessica about the ESG revolution: https://www.betashares.com.au/insights/the-esg-revolution/Jessica is a member of the portfolio management team at BetaShares. Prior to joining BetaShares, Jessica worked within the Systematic Equities Portfolio Management team at Macquarie Investment Management. Jessica is a CFA Charterholder and has a Bachelor degree in Actuarial Studies and a Bachelor of Applied Finance from Macquarie University.ETFs for Beginners is for information and educational purposes only. It isn’t financial advice, and you shouldn’t buy or sell any investments based on what you’ve heard here. The second half was strong, as expected, with revenue up 19% despite a currency headwind. The Enterprise division, selling direct to large corporations, continues to shine, with second half revenues increasing 35% and important new business wins that should be recurring in nature. The ITAD division, which sells erasure licences to equipment recyclers, did better than we should expect longer term, with a surge of end-of-life hardware processing occurring post COVID. The mobile phone recycling division didn’t inspire, generating revenues the same as the prior year, but it should benefit significantly from the return to normal life.” Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. While we all like to think we’ll behave a certain way in the next crash, the odds are most of us won’t. And a crash is definitely coming (we just don’t know when). There are, however, some practical steps we can take to ensure we are well placed to weather any storm, and take advantage of any opportunities that may arise. We also hear from winner of the eInvest $500 ETF competition James Ballard about why he chose EIGA & how he's setting his family up for the future.
