Joanne McEachen on Joy and Innovating in Education, and bringing an Indigenous perspective to global conversations
Joanne has been an innovator in education for many years both in New Zealand and globally. As well as writing 6 books on this topic she brings an approach of placing the learner first when it comes to education - making education fun and something people want to do. In this conversation we hear about her childhood and background, growing up without knowing she was Māori and what it meant to find out and how that influenced her sense of being. We also hear about her work in schools in New Zealand, within the Ministry of Education and then the work she has done offshore based in Seattle. We also reflect on the meaning of 'home', why joy is important in education, EHF, caring for her Mother at the end of her life and the call to being a teacher. We cover a lot! Reimagining Business for the Future: A conversation with Steven Moe for academyEX
I was recently interviewed by Hancine Samvelyan for an academyEX event at the end of July 2023 and this is the audio of that. In it we unpack some of my own history and then dive into my thoughts on the future of business. It is a good articulation of my current - ever evolving - thinking, so sharing here for all of you as well. academyEX info: Higher Education For Your Future | academyEX www.theseeds.nz What does it mean to have a 100-year perspective on reimagining the role of business? How can business structures be reimagined to address the limitations of the current system and to create positive impact? Join us to answer these questions and more, as we reimagine the future of business. Join us for an enlightening and thought-provoking event, where we will discuss how business structures can be reimagined to address limitations, create positive impact, as well as the possibilities for businesses in the future. We are privileged to be joined by Steven Moe, author of "Social Enterprises in New Zealand" and "Reimagining Business." Steven brings a wealth of expertise in start-ups, small businesses, and purpose-driven entities, providing practical support on crucial topics such as structures, raising capital, and intellectual property. Steven will shed light on the inherent limitations in our current business structures, and explain how businesses can still embody impact and create positive change, despite these shortcomings. He will also take us through what the future might hold if we really did reimagine the role of business with a 100-year perspective. We'll leave plenty of time at the end to discuss and have your questions answered. www.seedsconference.nz

Mitch Shaw on Upstream and the power of Social Procurement
Mitch Shaw is a co-founder of Upstream, a business which harnesses the power of social procurement to fund charities. With around $250,000 given out already, it is an impressive example of innovation in a start-up which merges business, charity and philanthropy. Wearing my other hat as a lawyer I helped them set up 5 years ago so it was special to hear about how far they have come with pushing the boundaries of this idea. Like all Seeds episodes we start with his background and what has shaped Mitch into who he is today. In particular, we hear about growing up in a lower decile area, what gettting a scholarship to a high decile school was like and how you cope if your identity is bound up with being very good at sports. I really enjoyed this conversation and appreciated Mitch's willingness to talk about some pretty hard topics and share about his life story. If you have a business consider ways you could get involved with Upsteam - there are several ways set out on their site. Consumers can choose to use their suppliers as another way to support. Upstream site: About Upstream - Upstream 100% Charitable Mitch's contact: [email protected] Mention in the conversation this 10 minutes on how to set up an impact driven organisation: Seeds: How to set up an impact driven organisation (libsyn.com) Seeds Impact Conference in October: Seeds Impact Conference 2023 (seedsconference.nz) "Upstream empowers customers to impact their community and strengthen the wellbeing of children and young people in Aotearoa. Brianne West on founding Ethique and lessons learned
Brianne has a focus at Ethique on both purpose (having positive impact) as well as profit (being sustainable) - she has given a lot of interviews but none I could find really focus on her early years - her childhood, the influence of her parents, the first ventures that taught her a lot and what then lead to Ethique. Often we only hear the highlights but in this conversation Brianne was willing to share a lot more details of how things developed and lessons learned. I really appreciated her transparency and the model she is providing for other entrepreneurs who seek to make a lasting impact through the business they start.
