97. Am I The Asshole? With Comedian Dave Adams
In this episode I'm joined by Dave Adams, a comedian and family man based here in Christchurch and we delved into some threads from Reddit's r/AmITheAsshole which has become a favourite pasttime of mine to read. We picked a couple of interesting threads to talk about and Dave shared some great wisdom about both. We also discussed the NZ culture of FIsh n' Chips and there was a bit of pro wrestling talk, as you can imagine. Dave was also tickled pink to learn that I own multiple replica swords.AITA's Covered:AITA because I ate more than "my share" of a 6 foot party sub last night?AITA For telling my wife to take time off work if she wants time for herself?Follow Dave Adams Online:https://www.facebook.com/DaveAdamsNZComedyhttps://www.instagram.com/daveydizzl/He and Jenny can also build you a website, visit https://www.winning.nz/--Join the Ruddle Me This! subreddit to discuss the show, visit r/ruddlemethis!I'd love it if you could leave this podcast a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or GoodPods. 96. What IS Meditation? with Dan Burgess-Milne
Today I sat down with Dan Burgess-Milne, a Christchurch based Meditation and Dharma teacher, game theory educator and rapper. Dan performed a presentation called Shifting Paradigms at Nerd Nite and was put in touch with me through the good folk at Nerd Nite. I was quite worried I wasn't going to be able to keep up with some of the concepts Dan talked about in his presentation but after sitting down with him for an hour I actually do really understand his presentation a lot better, I hope this podcast might help you too! The other massive revelation I had from this podcast was getting a better understanding of Meditation, and how the way most people practice it is actually only doing half of what meditation is supposed to be about. It was really eye opening, and I hope you enjoy it!Get in touch with Dan here, he's got some cool stuff in the works!Watch Dan's Nerd Nite Talk "Shifting Paradigms" here--Join the Ruddle Me This! subreddit to discuss the show, visit r/ruddlemethis!I'd love it if you could leave this podcast a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or GoodPods. Alright Mate? Mental Health Chats #1
I've teamed up with Logan Robinson of Robinson Wellness, he's a legit therapist (Registered Social Worker and Mental Health Coach), I tell jokes for money (sometimes) and we spent an hour discussing mental health issues submitted by my listeners. Here's what we talked about:My work is currently starting the redundancy process which is really scary. The job market is terrifying at the moment and it's hard not to think that I'm going to lose my job and not get another one for months. Why is everyone so fucking stupid?Grief. My grandfather passed away at aged 90, after being in decline for honestly a few years. I’m struggling with guilt because I feel numb. I’m not crying, I’m not angry… nothing. Haven’t seen him in ten years, as he lives in England, but he is still my grandfather and I miss him even more now. 95. Bilingual Comedy & International Travel with Elisa Bonnafous
Another great interview for you, this week I'm joined by comedian, surfer, photographer, civil engineer, wine maker and much more - Elisa Bonnafous! Elisa hails from France and is currently residing in Auckland where she's a cornerstone in the local stand up scene. We initially intended on talking about international travel but as the conversation got started it turned into more talking about the mutual experience we have of being an immigrant in a new country and how that affects your identity, as well as learning a new language and how that can change your personality somehow. We talk about Elisa's exploits in stand up, and what it's like performing in your second language as well as working on a solo hour. There's also plenty of talk about wine making and as you can imagine, the Roman Empire comes up towards the end! 94. Coffee Guilds, Professional Box-tickers & The Crystal Pineapple with Mark "Chirny" Chirnside
This episode is a rollercoaster from start to finish! I'm joined by coffee merchant, musician, sometimes comedian, potential future mayor of Christchurch, amateur box-ticker, businessman and Crystal Pineapple guild administrator - it's Mark "Chirny" Chirnside!I've been aware of Mark for several years and so it was great that he was able to stop by and have a chat on the podcast. We talked a lot about applying for arts funding, the fallacies and pitfalls of institutions and what steps he's taken to future-proof his own ones, there's HEAPS of coffee chat, we talked about the intricacies of the coffee community here in Christchurch, and then we end with Mark telling me about the Crystal Pineapple project, it's truly a fascinating wee tale that came out of nowhere and had me enthralled from start to finish.Mark's Coffee shop Crafted Coffee Company can be found at 121 Blenheim Road, Christchurch, and on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/thecraftedcoffeecompanyFollow Mark Online:https://www.facebook.com/ChirnysCoffeehttps://chirny.com/Keep up with The Crystal Pineapple here:https://www.instagram.com/crystalpineapple--Join the Ruddle Me This! subreddit to discuss the show, visit r/ruddlemethis!I'd love it if you could leave this podcast a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or GoodPods. 93. History, Music & Forteana with Simone Whitlow from Tales of History and Imagination
The first ever Ruddle Me This crossover episode! In this episode I'm doing a swapcast with Simone Whitlow from The Tales of History & Imagination Podcast! I'm trying to do a better job at connecting with other podcasters and this was a good first step. In this episode we chat about Simone's history performing in music, as well as how she got into history and then decided to create a whole podcast around it. We also spoke about Forteana which was something new I learnt about, somewhat hard to explain but you can read all about it on wikipedia, but described by Charles Fort as a "distinctive blend of mocking humor, penetrating insight, and calculated outrageousness"The blurb of Simone's show is: Ever heard the Tale of the man who tried to kill time as we know it? The mysterious beast which stalked a remote French village in the 1760s? What about the time a prankster ‘Zipped’ two Chicago television stations? Tales of History and Imagination tells the Tales from history less told. We discuss strange, enigmatic characters, the cameo roles in life’s play, and, sometimes, major events from a viewpoint rarely seen.If you'd like to check out Simone's show, visit https://historyandimagination.com/ and you can listen in there, or just search for Tales of History & Imagination on your favourite podcatcher! There's also a facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/Talesofhistoryandimagination--Join the Ruddle Me This! subreddit to discuss the show, visit r/ruddlemethis!I'd love it if you could leave this podcast a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or GoodPods. Crime Shows We LOVE with Hamish Mabon-Ross (BONUS)
Sorry squad, we've missed our Hoss Town upload for the month, Matt came down with a ripper of a migraine on the filming day and that was unfortunately my last window before a super busy 2 week period including a gig on the road and the taping of my special, so Hoss Town shall return in 2025!Luckily I have 1 more podcast in my Break Glass in case of emergency folder, and this week I've got Hamish Mabon-Ross back on the podcast to discuss all the crime tv shows we enjoyed as well as talk about why seemingly straight laced innocent men such as ourselves love watching crime shows. We talk about Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and a handful of others. 92. Improv & Music in Japan with JinJin
It's another bonus episode! This week I'm joined by my dear friend JinJin from back in Japan. We reminisced about the time we performed an improv show at a hostel in the middle of nowhere to an audience of Chinese tourists with me only speaking English, the other 2 only speaking Japanese, and the tourists speaking neither, somehow it was actually a really fun show. We catch up on how JinJin has been and what kind of shows he is performing on as an improviser and musician in Japan, as well as how he got interested in Improv, as well as what's the difference between stand-up, rakugo, and manzai. It was a great little catch up and JinJin is just an amazing guy, so positive and enthusiastic, he always gives 110%.Follow JinJin online:https://www.instagram.com/kohshirohjinjinjinnai/Get your tickets to my Panic! Shockingly fast, here's another Volume of The Phantom Files! This time featuring four chilling tales and I also share my findings after getting out into the field and doing some research at a pretty commonly accepted haunted location in my town - The Riccarton House! I spoke to a guide there who told me that they were sensitive to spirits and have had several encounters over the years. We also feature the tales: The Devil Went Out To Dinner, The Apartment Fire, The Full English, and The Lobby Time Slip. 90. Musician Life in Christchurch with Ruby Kush
This week I'm joined by local Christchurch Musician Ruby Kush! I booked a meeting room in the central Christchurch Library, Turanga and we recorded the episode there as something a bit different. We talked about her history as a musician, how she got started releasing tracks and what it's like trying to make a living as a musician in Christchurch. We also talked about her activisim and what angles she might take next year moving into politics at a local level. We bonded over a mutual childhood experience of watching Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors and then ended with some looser, more off the wall questions such as "What's your favourite struggle meal?" and "What's one food from history you'd like to go back in time and try?" It's a great episode and I reckon keep your eye on Ruby over the next year, she'll be popping off before long!Easiest way to keep up with Ruby Kush is via her Linktree:https://linktr.ee/rubykushmusicMusic video for Inside Out (Over You) found here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWHaT8YJSrkGet your tickets to my Panic! 89. Comedian Courtney Dawson
Wowza what a guest I have for you this week! It's TV's Courtney Dawson! If you follow comedy then Courtney will be very familiar to you. I was lucky enough to catch Courtney while she was down for a few days and recorded this hilarious podcast. One of the funniest people in NZ on and off stage. We talked about things such as: how does a white person give a Pepeha? Her father's history of doing Mr Beast-like challenges and especially his latest one - Poppy's Comedy Club opened in his very own garage. Courtney tells us about a potentially paranormal experience she had, and about the time she foiled a vintage clothing store robbery, with a whole pile of laughs along the way. 88. All About India with Comedian Ben Vyas
Get your tickets to my Panic! At The Buffet comedy taping on the 26th of October 2024 HEREI recently watched the film Manjhi – The Mountain Man, about Dashrath Manjhi, a real life Indian man who carved a road through a mountain using only hand tools over the course of 22 years to make a road for his village to get to a nearby bigger village, reducing the travel time from 2 hours to around 40 minutes. I've always been fascinated with India in general, especially after growing up watching Russell Peters specials, and years ago I watched a special by Hamish And Andy of Australia where they explored India. I'm just curious about other countries in general so Ben Vyas, a local comedian on the scene was kind enough to join me on the pod and chat about India, Mountain Man, Ganesh, his Hindu faith in general and just any other questions I had in general about the country. We ended up getting really deep at the end and I realized in the middle of my conversation with Ben why this Mountain Man story has resonated with me so much. 87. Darren Shan Nostalgia with Hamish Mabon-Ross
Get your tickets to my Panic! At The Buffet comedy taping on the 26th of October 2024 HEREIn this episode, I brought back my regular compadre, Hamish Mabon-Ross to discuss the Young Adult horror vampire novel series that we both enjoyed in our youth - The Saga of Darren Shan! I had been feeling really nostalgic for this series as of late and when Hame mentioned that he was also familiar with it, I thought that's it! We need to do an episode of the pod talking about it. We mostly talk about his Cirque Du Freak / Vampire's Assistant / Tunnels of Blood books, but we also do talk about his later work, The Demonata and Zom-B towards the end. It's a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, we jump all over the place as random bits and pieces spark memories about other bits of the books, but I think you'll enjoy it all the same.I know Darren includes podcasts and videos about his work occasionally in his newsletter the Shanville Monthly so if you're reading this Darren, thanks for the incredible books, I enjoyed them immensely as a kid and I'm sure they must have a part in shaping my personality as I grew up. Keep up the great work!Cover art featuring my actual books. The books, in case you're interested in checking them out are: The Saga of Darren Shan (also known as the Cirque Du Freak seriesVampire Blood Trilogy: Cirque Du Freak, The Vampire's Assistant, Tunnels of Blood.Vampire Rites Trilogy: Vampire Mountain, Trials of Death, The Vampire Prince.Vampire War Trilogy: Hunters of the Dusk, Allies of the Night, Killers of the Dawn.Vampire Destiny Trilogy: The Lake of Souls, Lord of the Shadows, Sons of Destiny. The Demonata: Lord Loss, Demon Thief, Slawter, Bec, Blood Beast, Demon Apocalypse, Death's Shadow, Wolf Island, Dark Calling, Hell's Heroes. And then there's the Zom-B series but I'm too lazy to grab all the individual titles, give it a read, it's cool stuff! Get your tickets to my Panic! At The Buffet comedy taping on the 26th of October 2024 HEREBack from the grave! It's another edition of The Phantom Files, just over a year later than Volume III. As usual I've got some fantastic tales to share, in this episode Rebecca from Volume I makes a return telling us about an entity she created called The Hunter. I play an old radio recording called Bongo In The Pilliga from an Australian radio show called Overnights about the area of Australia called The Pilliga where ghosts and cryptids are rumoured to have been sighted. I retell a story of one of the only instances where Christchurch had a ghost - The Victoria Street Ghost. Tracey Royce of The Quantum Foundation returns to tell us about an entity she saw that we have no way of describing but the story sent chills down my spine to hear it! We close off with a short story about the mythical Cape Reigna here in New Zealand, thought to be the entrance to the underworld in Māori mythology. It's a great episode, hope you like it!This image shows how Tracey saw the entity that she did.If you'd like to preorder a copy of Tracey's book, flick her an email to [email protected] and say hello, no payment needed until the book is published!Listen to The Phantom Files Vol. I, Vol. II, Vol. III and Vol. IV here, and check out my Interview with a Paranormal Investigator here.Intro/Outro Music:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fVRA6XnvYcHorror Ambience:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svAspF0nxC0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nD3Sp_saz4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrRNj9gJezA--Join the Ruddle Me This! subreddit to discuss the show, visit r/ruddlemethis!I'd love it if you could leave this podcast a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or GoodPods. Some of the things Dan suggested discussing were:How I marketed my show without PR/an agentStuff that I wish I knewBenefits of Edinburgh / opportunitiesHow to not lose lots of money*How to not have a mental breakdown**these apply to Edinburgh Fringe. Can’t help outside of this lolWe also chatted about how to find a venue as well as source some accommodation which I had heard were the two hardest things about doing the EdFringe. Get your tickets to my Panic! At The Buffet comedy taping on the 26th of October 2024 HEREIn this episode I'm joined by a Christchurch based Therapist, Logan Robinson! Hot dog, he's a proper therapist and everything. We met very randomly as I saw a post he made on Reddit about offering cheap therapy, $60 every 2 weeks so just $30 a week. I felt that that was very generous of him to try and do his bit to help the mental health crisis we've got going on in NZ.Here's a bit about Logan's specialities: "I'm a professional therapist with specialisation in ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression, stress and burnout. Fails, Fumbles & F*ckups | Hoss Town Podcast Ep. 5
In this episode, the Dons of Hoss Town yap up a storm about the potential lockdown 2: electric boogaloo that we might have to go through, before moving on to something a bit lighter in the closing of Big Gary's Takeaways here in Christchurch as well as their favourite fish & chip establishments. Matt bares his soul and talks about the incredibly tough night he had in the finals of the Christchurch Raw Comedy Competition and Taylor vows to stage an insurrection in order to defend Matt's honour. The lads then talk about times they've failed in showbiz, most lately Taylor's trip to Twizel where he sold 11 tickets to a show in a theatre that seated 200 people! The big fullas wrap things up with some talk of Fringe Festivals and then take a jaunt down Harry Potter avenue to close things out.Watch the full video on YouTube here.Follow Taylor Online:YouTube - Insta - Tiktok - FacebookFollow Matt Online:YouTube - Insta - FacebookHoss Town is a monthly podcast by two big boys respectfully making some noise, stand up comedians Taylor Ruddle & Matt Lilley. Jesus, writing this out now Taylor is realizing what a dark episode it comes across as, we swear it's a laugh though! In episode 2 the dons of hosstown discuss the Rap Beef between Drake and Kendrick, or moreso Matt explains why this is so significant to Taylor. The boys then sojourn down Baby Reindeer Boulevard and Taylor explains why the in-show poster for "Lol-on Cancer" was a perfect easter egg. Biggie Smalls is inducted into the Hoss Hall of Fame and The Fellas end by discussing the "Would you rather meet a bear or a man in the woods" trend which leads into a discussion about male delusion, could they stop a bank robbery, land a plane with no training or beat a bear in single combat? Charn Williams is back with a vengeance and we talk about her Tiny Joys, it's another fun filled frolic through topics such as oodies, when is it people watching vs perving, how many beverages can one person have on the go at once, and why I suspect Charn is secretly a cat masquerading as a human.Charn Williams's Tiny Joys:my oodiesPeople watching having multiple (non alcoholic) drinks at the same timereading unhinged Facebook postsknocking stuff overWatch my full hour-long stand up special Ruddzilla for FREE on YouTube here!Fill out the Ruddle Me This! 65. Fringes, Nuggies & Schadenfreude - Ocean Denham's 5 Tiny Joys
This week I'm joined by Auckland based stand up comedian Ocean Denham and she brought 5 tiny joys to the show. We ended up getting into some great tangents about entertaining children, being labeled the "picky" eater as a kid, and why whenever you have a fringe, it's a sign that things aren't going well. (I currently have a fringe)Ocean has a show coming up in the NZ Comedy fest called A Hot Girl And Her Suzuki Swift, grab tickets for it here and you can follow Ocean on Instagram here. 63. What it's been like working as a full time comedian for a year
It's just over a week since a year to the day I left my previous job to work as a comedian full time. It's been a year of ups and downs and I've learnt a lot, most of which I tried to document in this episode of the podcasts. The questions I covered:Did I make any money this year? How much of my runway have I used? How has my lifestyle changed? How are my hands doing? My health in general? How is the podcast doing?I also talked about these observations:Being a freelance entertainer is all about maintaining relationships, and weeding out the people who aren’t worth your time.Waiting for venues / companies to pay you can be a nightmareYou need to be on top of your calendar / schedule, and be thinking ahead. You will get very frustrated with other people’s lack of organisationYou’re not obligated to reply to people straight awayYou’re going to feel like you’re shouting into the void a lotYou might find planning activities outside of work too exhausting to bother withEvery day is different. You’ll experience some of the weirdest gigs and jobs that you never saw yourself doingYou’re going to experience hella ups and downs. You’ll feel like you’re taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back a lot.You have to put yourself out there - you will experience growth from thisYou will often need to spend money to make moneyYou will really quickly learn the value of your work, and hearing “no” will no longer be devastatingYou will probably still have a lot of sleepless nightsYou will feel a new type of satisfaction having paid your bills off the back of your artWatch my full hour-long stand up special Ruddzilla for FREE on YouTube here!Fill out the Ruddle Me This! 58. 90's Anime Nostalgia
In this episode, I ramble about my nostalgia for the way I used to watch anime back in the 90s during my childhood, and then in the wake of Akira Toriyama's passing I talk about my memories of DragonBall and why it was a meaningful series to me.This one ended up being a lot longer than I expected, and there's still so much more I'd love to cover, so if you'd listen to more Anime themed episodes then let me know on the Patreon group or other social media and if there's any demand for it I'll definitely do more!Rest In Peace, Toriyama Sensei.Watch my full hour-long stand up special Ruddzilla for FREE on YouTube here!Fill out the Ruddle Me This!
