On Mindful Eating
One of the things we’ve been asked the most lately is about our eating habits during lockdown. It seems that being within arm’s reach of the fridge amplifies a lot of thoughts about food, and often, we engage in an internal battle about that thought. The next time thoughts about food or eating habits arise, try to notice it, acknowledge it, and act appropriately — not react emotionally.

Don’t Scratch The Itch
Itches have a way of taking over the body. It can be all we think about, and we often scratch and scratch with little relief. This is common with physical discomfort. Whenever we notice a twinge we immediately go to change it. But what if you sat with it for a moment instead? Explore sitting with discomfort and see what happens.

Embracing the Things We Don’t Like
How much time do you spend running away from things you don’t like? Green veggies may come to mind, or a specific task at work. This weekend, try instead to turn toward things you usually avoid and approach them with curiosity. This is a useful skill to have and you may find you like kale more than you think.

If Enlightenment Happens, You Won’t Miss It
We get a lot of questions about journaling during a meditation. A lot of thoughts pop up during meditation — they could be creative or insightful. And we may want to remember them. But stopping your meditation to write things down changes the nature of the exercise and may even create more tension. Try to resist this urge. Trust us — if it’s really important, you won’t forget it.

New Quarantine Skill: Juggling
Are you in the process of learning something new? Or are you quitting a new skill before you’ve really learned it because you think you’re bad at it? If you have these thoughts when you’re learning something, remember, that is just a thought. It has no basis in reality. Try to appreciate whatever you’re doing, wherever you’re at.

Having Scary Thoughts
Sometimes, thoughts that really scare us can arise. And if there is the chance of immediate harm for you or someone around you, please seek medical attention as quickly as possible. But for other scary thoughts, we tend to push them down. We judge them and judge ourselves from having them. But we don’t have to. It’s our job to just witness the mind as it is.

The Spectacular Now
Not too long ago, Andy helped Cookie Monster out while he was waiting for his latest batch of cookies to bake. And while you may not be a cookie monster, you may often find yourself waiting for something else to happen, which often means you’re missing out on what is actually happening right now. Remember, what’s happening right now is enough.
Check out Andy’s adventures with all of our friends on Sesame Street.

Expert Single-Tasker
We only have so much energy in our lives. If we channel it into the wrong things, including multi-tasking, we find that time flies by but we aren’t sure how we spent it or what we got accomplished. What if instead, you gave something your entire focus? Try it today and see how you feel.

Today, We’re Going to Talk About Death
There is an exercise in the monastery where every evening, the monks and nuns acknowledge the fact that one day, we will die. Not in a morbid or sad way, but in a way that helps us appreciate each and every moment we’ve been given.

Commit to Flexibility
We often approach commitments with an “all or nothing” mentality. You should keep your commitments, but missing an appointment or a workout doesn’t make you a commitment failure. It may mean that instead, you’re making space in your life for other, equally important things.

Everything in Its Place
We’ve heard from a few people that during this time, their work feels unessential. Maybe you feel this way. If you do, remember that you always have the opportunity to be of service. Today, don’t ask yourself what your work is doing for you, but rather what it is doing for others.

Please Don’t Stop the Music
Have an earworm? That same tune that keeps playing over and over — whether it’s actually music, a thought that won’t leave you alone, or a story that just keeps replaying in your mind. Rather than fighting it, what would happen today if you gave that noise your full attention?

Fight Club Rules Apply
The more we shout the benefits of meditating, very often the further we get from the actual experience of doing it. If you have someone in your life you want to try something you love, rather than talking it up, encourage them to try it for themselves.

Let Go of Great Expectations
How much time do you spend trying to anticipate what people are going to do next? Especially with young children, we can place pretty big expectations on who or what they’re going to be or do. But in doing that, we don’t allow people to be who they actually are. Today, instead of trying to anticipate, try experiencing someone as they are in that moment.

Pay Attention to the Breath
The entire planet is a living, breathing organism. It changes every day. The air we breathe could have been created thousands of miles away. And when we sit and notice the breath, we notice that each one is different, as is each moment. This weekend, pause and try to notice life as it unfolds.

What Do You Appreciate Most?
Take a moment and think about it. Who or what do you appreciate the most? It could be your family. Or friends. A moment of quiet. It might change daily, or even moment to moment. The answer doesn’t actually matter, just try to notice what comes up.

Turn Off Autopilot
When we’re rushing through the day, it’s easy to get caught up in our routines and in our own minds. But how much of life are we missing when we forget to look around? Try to approach today like it’s brand-new.

Take Your Practice With You
We place a lot of value on our physical and mental health. You may even meditate or do yoga. But if you’re present and embracing loving kindness during your meditation or in a yoga class, but driving away screaming at someone in traffic, you’re not fully embracing the philosophies of those practices. Today, focus on aligning your attitude with your actions.

What Story Are You Telling?
Humans are amazing storytellers. It allows us to connect with each other, entertain each other and empathize with each other. But problems arise when the stories that we create in our minds grow beyond our current reality. Today, look out for times when thoughts are spinning out and focus instead, on what is happening in this moment.

What’s Real and What’s Not?
A lot of us walk around waiting for something to happen. We can carry that tension in our bodies and minds, constantly on alert, imagining an unpleasant experience. It’s an uncomfortable way to live. And if we walk through life waiting, or intentionally looking for those things, we will keep that story alive. This weekend, try to let go of what’s not real and focus on what is.

Being vs. Becoming
Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? How about what you want to be in 5 years? Maybe even in 5 minutes? So often, we’re so focused on becoming something or someone different, that we can forget to just be who we are right now.

How Do You See Yourself?
We all seem to have a fixed idea of who we think we are and who we’re not. And often, that can define how we live. We just might be shortchanging ourselves in the process. But if we can catch those ideas as they arise and explore them, we can see that anything and everything is possible.

Act, Don't React
We’ve gotten a lot of emails at Headspace HQ about healthy habits and routines. Right now, it can feel challenging to control your environment, but today, we challenge you to instead focus on what’s going on inside. When you’re able to notice a thought, you can respond calmly, clearly, with intention rather than react emotionally.
