Bad Hair (aka A Period Piece) with Bre Indigo, Lando Toothman, and Alicia Whitley
Fear Level: Mostly Spoopy with existential dreadTrigger Warnings: Racism, colorism, trauma, body horror, sexual assault, violence, bloodDirector: Justin SimienWriters: Justin SimienStars: Elle Lorraine, Judith Scott, Vanessa William s, Jay Pharoah, James Van Der Beek, Lena Waithe, Kelly Rowland, Usher, Blair Underwood, Michelle Hurd, MC Lyte, Robin Thede, Laverne Cox, Nicole Byer"Bad Hair" is a politically and socially relevant drama, filled with the real life challenges that black women faced and continue to face in the workplace and in their daily lives. It's a thoughtful consideration of the pressure to conform to traditional Eurocentric beauty standards even in creative fields and the damned if you do, damned if you don't nature of what we as a society demand of black women. It highlights the way in which Anna, a young black woman working in television is overlooked, mistreated and betrayed.Psych! Actually it's a campy horror movie about a woman that decides to get a weave that turns out to suck blood, physically violates her, and murders her friends. It's "Little Shop of Horrors" if Seymour wore Audrey II around on his head and Audrey II occasionally stuck its plant tentacles down his pants and into his bodily orifices.Psych! Fear Level: Spoopy (not scary)Trigger Warnings: Blood, suicidal ideation, moderate violence, several uses of “the r word”Directors: Holly DaleWriters: Andrew Rai BerzinsStars: Gordon Currie, Louis Ferreira, Helene ClarksonTonight we learned a new term thanks to our special guest, Bronwyn Kelly-Seigh. That term is "CanCon". In Canada they actually invest in their creators and their are mandatory minimums and grants for content created in Canada and using Canadian creators and actors. And that, dear friends, is how you end up with a little movie called "Blood and Donuts" about a vampire who went to sleep in 1969 and woke up in mid-nineties Toronto. Now he's eager to see all the sights, like the world's most run down block of flats, the graveyard where he buried his vampire coat and squeezebox, and the world's dingiest all-night donut shop. But that's not all! Before his first day is over he'll be dealing with the Toronto mob (led by David Cronenberg himself) and he'll be part of a bizarre love rhombus with his old girlfriend, the spunky bat-wielding clerk at the donut shop, and a cab driver with a deeply inexplicable accent. It's about four high school girls who are very into magic, very bad at wearing their catholic school uniforms to regulation, and each have one very specific life problem that they decide to change with the practical application of magic. Of course, in any nineties movie, girls strive to get some kind of power and control in their lives and when they get it they go immediately insane and begin killing people and turning on each other (sigh). We all remember this movie (except Ben, who is a literal infant) but just how well do we remember it? Ready or Not (aka Furious Girl Seeking Depressed Guy) with Justina Ireland
Fear Level: Spooky (a little scary)Trigger Warnings: Gaslighting, violence, moderate gore, demonism, rich peopleDirectors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler GillettWriters: Guy Busick, R. Christopher MurphyStars: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Andie MacDowellIt's a Progressively Horrified All-Stars episode as both Samara Weaving (from Mayhem) and Adam Brody (from Jennifer's Body) play hide and seek with our hearts in the amazing 2019 horror comedy "Ready or Not". We are joined by horror author and all around great person Justina Ireland to discuss the most complicated contract that the demon lawyer has written up yet. Grace (Samara Weaving) has just married in to a very rich family with a board game empire and she finds out there's just one catch: that family got all their money as part of a deal with the devil and if she wants to be part of the family, she has to play a game. When she pulls the card that says "hide and seek" it means that the rest of the members of the family have until dawn to sacrifice her. It's wild. It's funny. Black Christmas (aka Just a Regular Herring) with Bob Reyer
Fright Level: Spooky with intense amount of existential dreadTrigger Warnings: Intense depictions of and lengthy discussion of sexual violence and rape. Violence. Mild gore. Jump scares. Home Invasion. Stalking. Cyber Stalking. Christmas.Merry Christmas and/or Happy Friday! We got you a Christmas and/or Friday present! We did a very merry episode of the podcast with our very own Santa Claus, Talking Comics' Bob Reyer! Bob brought us some figgy pudding and we talked about the 2019 film "Black Christmas" directed by Sophia Takal and starring Imogen Poots and an army of amazing young female actors. Fair warning, this movie is extensively about misogyny, sexual assault, rape, and the way all of those things intersect with college. Just be cautious going in, we don't want to ruin anybody's Christmas or Friday.Topics of conversation for this one include: -Cary Elwes and how he can sell us anything, fixing leaky busts-How funny the word bust is (to Ben) and how Emily just won't stop saying it. -Bob brings the knowledge of all the other movies that are also called Black Christmas (I didn't check to see if he knew about Black Friday, but I'm guessing he does). -Honestly, who steals a diva cup?-Actual toxic masculinity-Mean Girls (again).-Why it's uncool to hang out at your friend's work and talk about their sexual assault.-Archery-Alternate uses for dry cleaning bags-One overly aggressive analogy about what it's like to be Jewish on ChristmasRecommendations:Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley QuinnPaper GirlsBring It OnHappy Death DayRabid (2019)Under the SkinHeathersJust the last scene of DeathproofAlice Isn't Dead (Podcast)Alice Isn't Dead (Book)Listen to Bob on the Talking Comics Podcast every week: http://talkingcomicbooks.com/category/podcast-2/RSS Feed: https://feeds.simplecast.com/TfzwpjPlFollow us on twitter @proghorrorpodFollow Jeremy on twitter @jrome58Follow Emily at @megamothCheck out Emily's art and art classes at: http://www.megamoth.net/Follow Ben on twitter @benthekahnPre-Order Ben's new book, Renegade Rule.Chris's other Podcast "Gotham Outsiders: A Batman Book Club Podcast"RSS Feed: https://feeds.transistor.fm/progressively-horrifiedWebsite: https://progressivelyhorrified.transistor.fm/Join our Patreon at: patreon.com/progressivelyhorrified to support the show, get bonus episodes, early access to upcoming episodes, and a cool Progressively Horrified t-shirt.Join us next week for The Descent guest starring Jason Strutz! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Mayhem (aka Office Space Game of Death) with Allie Mullin
Fright Level: Spoopy with a side of existential dread about capitalismTrigger Warnings: Pandemic, disease, blood and gore, mild workplace sexism, a disability slur, horrible workplace, mild nudityLet's establish something real quick: there are two opposing types of action movies:-A "Die Hard": Work your way down through a building to rescue hostages / escape-A "Game of Death": Work your way up through a building, taking out level bosses on the way, to reach a final boss at the top.Now that we have that out of the way, you have everything you need to understand what I mean when I say that "Mayhem" is an Office Space Game of Death, in which you have to work your way through your evil coworkers to reach and fight the evil CEO of your company. Sound fun? Well, then it's time you met Mayhem!Directed by Joe Lynch, Mayhem is a blood splattered, nail shooting, mug smashing good time. It may not have anything even remotely not straight to offer you, but what's less straight than fighting for the downfall of late stage capitalism, right? Maybe that's a stretch, but this movie is jam packed with class conversation and features an effortlessly diverse cast including Steven Yuen and Samara Weaving, who are cutting a bloody swath through an office under quarantine for a disease that causes you to lose all inhibitions.Recommendations:ParasiteAggretsukoEvil Dead 2Train to BusanThey LiveRaising ArizonaFollow Allie at @alliemullinSee Allie's Photography at: https://www.alliemullin.com/Follow Emily at @megamothCheck out Emily's art and art classes at: http://www.megamoth.net/Follow us on twitter @proghorrorpodFollow Jeremy on twitter @jrome58Follow Chris on twitter @themythofpsycheFollow Ben on twitter @benthekahnPre-Order Ben's new book, Renegade Rule.Chris's other Podcast "Gotham Outsiders: A Batman Book Club Podcast"RSS Feed: https://feeds.transistor.fm/progressively-horrifiedWebsite: https://progressivelyhorrified.transistor.fm/Join our Patreon at: patreon.com/progressivelyhorrified to support the show, get bonus episodes, early access to upcoming episodes, and a cool Progressively Horrified t-shirt.Join us next week for Black Christmas on Christmas! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The Babadook (aka Boomerang Crossbow) with Emily Martin
Fright Level: Terrifying (Very Scary) with overwhelming existential dreadTrigger Warnings: Violence toward animals, violence toward children, jump scares, light gore, gaslighting, insomnia, hallucinations, abusive familial relationships.Good gracious guys, this one is a wild ride. We sat down on the day after the American presidential election to discuss the scariest and hardest to process movie we've watched so far. This one is long. Believe us, the experience was more difficult for us than it will be for you.The Babadook is a 2014 Australian thriller by Director Jennifer Kent and is based roughly on her own short film "Monster". It's not an easy movie to watch, especially if you have kids which will become quickly evident in the first segment when we list the trigger warnings. On the plus side, there's no sexual assault in this movie, setting it apart from most of the horror movies we've discussed so far. It is genuinely affective and is a good movie, but maybe one you want to pick the right opportunity that isn't right after an already traumatic event to watch it after. We will discuss not understanding Australia, Jeremy's certainty that when you shoot an Australian crossbow the bolt comes back to you, our shared appreciation for and dislike of Hereditary, and what a difference having a nice old lady next door can have. Get ready to meet a Chip that's not a boyfriend, but a sister. Prepare to shudder at the horror of a nine-year-old girl's birthday party. And finally, join all of us in just wanting to take a nap after we finish talking about this movie. Am I selling it? Interview with "Anna and the Apocalypse" Actor Sarah Swire and Writer Alan McDonald (aka Whoever is Queer Shall Survive)
OH MY GOD! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!Actually I can tell you how it happened! We recorded a podcast about Anna and the Apocalypse and since we talked about our favorite tiny queer girl, Steph North, a whole bunch I tagged actress Sarah Swire in the tweet about the episode and then both she and Alan McDonald, the writer of Anna and the Apocalypse got in touch to say thanks for the shout outs in the episode and then Jeremy was like "Hey would you guys want to come on and talk about Anna and the Apocalypse and they both said yes and we had to do it at a weird time of day because Alan is in Scotland so Chris couldn't make it but she was there in spirit.Topics of conversation are far ranging but include:-Not burying your gays-Singing-Dancing-Choreographing-The many times of year during which different drafts of this movie were set-Creating honest queerness in your characters-Female protagonists not being your prize for hanging around long enough-Sliding Doors alternate universe where this movie never happens-Why directors should always want writers on their set-Overcoming traditional masculinity at the end of the world-Sarah's voice and how it's very good-Ben Wiggins, the man who makes a mockery out of the concept of sexuality-Optimus Prime's Linked in accountFollow Sarah on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahswire/Follow Alan on Twitter: @alanhmcdonaldFollow us on twitter @proghorrorpodFollow Jeremy on twitter @jrome58Follow Chris on twitter @themythofpsycheChris's other Podcast "Gotham Outsiders: A Batman Book Club Podcast"Follow Ben on twitter @benthekahnPre-Order Ben's new book, Renegade Rule.Follow Emily at @megamothCheck out Emily's art and art classes at: http://www.megamoth.net/RSS Feed: https://feeds.transistor.fm/progressively-horrifiedWebsite: https://progressivelyhorrified.transistor.fm/Join our Patreon at: patreon.com/progressivelyhorrified to support the show, get bonus episodes, early access to upcoming episodes, and a cool Progressively Horrified t-shirt. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The Cabin in the Woods (aka hit em with the dumb-ass gas) with TJ
Fright Level: SpoopyTrigger Warnings: Extensive gaslighting, violence toward women, extensive gore, disturbing images, Joss Whedon. It's the first episode of this podcast we've ever done to necessitate and upfront creator based content warning as we talk about the meta horror of "The Cabin in the Woods" and having grown up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly in a post Justice League world.Despite our Whedonesque misgivings, we're still very much here for Drew Goddard and a just pre-fame Chris Hemsworth. There's a lot of speculation about how many times a person has to write or underwrite the same type of character before it MEANS something. We dig into the small but important difference between being clever and being self-aware as the movie identifies a number of important tropes and then...continues them. Witness the worst final girl ever to continue to be alive. Laugh along with us as we fall in love with the incredibly comic booky idea of "dumb-ass gas". Gasp with us as we unravel the mysteries of Chekov's dirt bike! Head to your basement and summon up the monster or your choice to enjoy this one with. The Mummy (1999) (aka The Bisexual Thirst Trap) with Alexis Sanchez & Desiree Rodriguez
Fright Level: Spooky (a little scary)Trigger warnings: Egyptian/Middle Eastern exoticism, bugs, mild gore, jump scaresIs progress an illusion? Because we're talking 1999's "The Mummy" with Rachael Weisz and Brendan Frasier and how even though it traffics in Eastern exoticism and white people digging up dead brown people to steal their ancient artifacts, it's somehow way better at meaningful representation and creating female heroes with agency than the 2017 Tom Cruise "The Mummy."Also, was "The Mummy" just a thirst trap for young bisexuals? Our panels seems to think so as they find both the brilliant and gorgeous Evy Carnahan (Weisz) and the roguish and caring Rick O'Connell (Frasier) equally swoon worthy. Also were you a teenager in 1999 and do you still find yourself itching under your skin every time you see an image of a scarab. We sure as heck do. Come for the gooey mummies, stay for the empowered, intelligent, and somehow still feminine badass. Finally, is Oded Fehr so handsome that he saved this whole movie? Fright Level: Spooky (a little scary) with large amounts of existential dreadTrigger Warnings: attempted sexual assault, jump scares, violence, gore, racial violence, depictions of white supremacy groups, explosionsThe First Purge is about as subtle as a brick to the face and it's about as affective too. This movie finally realizes the ideas that previous iterations of The Purge have been circling around and it only took the Trump presidency to make it happen. The government has legalized all crime in Staten Island for one night and they're ready for the people to hit the streets and get their murder on. But when things don't go as expected, will the government have to take their medicine or will they conspire to directly cause the mass murder of black and brown people in the projects via organized hit squads? Anna and the Apocalypse (aka Sing it, Ben Wiggins!)
Fright Level: Spoopy (not scary) with mild jump scares and moderate existential dreadTrigger Warnings: zombies, gore, pandemics, high school, musicals, ChristmasAnna and the Apocalypse is a 2017 horror/comedy/musical from Scotland that combines our love of musicals set in high schools and zombie horror comedies set in England. It's directed by John McPhail and it stars Ella Hunt, Malcolm Cumming, Christopher Leveaux, Marli Siu, Mark Benton, Paul Kaye, and the podcast's new girlfriend Sarah Swire and new boyfriend Ben Wiggins. This movie has us co-sleeping in ballpits, fantasizing about power throuples, and examining the effects of toxic masculinity on how we deal with apocalypses and friendships. We also talk extensively about Sarah Swire's portrayal of Steph North and how rare it is to have a non-sexualized queer woman with social anxiety, a warm winter wardrobe, and a hatchback in a horror movie, despite the fact that that describes a quarter of our friend group. Jennifer's Body (AKA we all owe Megan Fox an apology)
Fright Level: Spoopy (not scary)Trigger Warnings: gaslighting, kidnapping, cannibalism, possession, toxic friendships, use of disability slursJennifer's Body is the 2009 horror/comedy from director Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Girlfight) and writer Diablo Cody (Juno) starring Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, and Adam Brody. It was torn up by critics and well known for having one of the worst advertising campaigns ever, but has since become a cult classic with queer horror fans and especially queer women. Why?Because it's actually really freaking good! It's a story about toxic friendships, blossoming queer relationships, 2000's indie emo bands, and ritual sacrifice and we're gonna tell you why it might be a modern queer feminist horror masterpiece. Also: Megan Fox is great, actually and we as a society owe her a huge apology.Recommendations:Shaun of the DeadThe DescentReady or NotFollow us on twitter @proghorrorpodFollow Jeremy on twitter @jrome58Follow Chris on twitter @themythofpsycheFollow Ben on twitter @benthekahnChris's other Podcast "Gotham Outsiders: A Batman Book Club Podcast"RSS Feed: https://feeds.transistor.fm/progressively-horrifiedWebsite: https://progressivelyhorrified.transistor.fm/Keep an eye out for our Patreon, with all sorts of bonuses, coming soon! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
