The company's aim is 'creating a world without the fear of cancer'. He mentioned every company makes mistakes or sometimes customers think that the company has done something wrong and every sphere will have a problem that is unavoidable but how to respond and the key element to tackle those circumstances that determines everything. He works in the compliance department resolving disputes and problems. The mid-segment was about the work processes and balance, then he was asked about the SOPs in medical affairs i.e. standard operating procedures for clinical practice, he had prime approaches for the same - policies, SOPs, granular work construction, and it ought to be automation. He also mentioned mnemonic words that are important in this sphere. According to the Department of Health and Human Services: Fifty-five percent of the elderly are non-compliant with their prescription drug orders, meaning they don't take their medication according to the doctor's instructions. Approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions. Special guest:  Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) President and CEO Alan Rosenbloom  Washington, DC – Today, House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) and minority committee members lawmakers will hold a forum to discuss the impact of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) in pharmaceutical markets with industry experts, pharmacists, physicians, and PBMs. In anticipation of the forum the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) offered the following statement from SCPC President and CEO Alan Rosenbloom: “We welcome today’s forum to examine PBMs and their anti-competitive practices, which ultimately drive-up costs for patients and put independent pharmacies out of business. A handful of PBMs dominate the market, and most are part of much larger health care conglomerates that spread both horizontally and vertically to encompass prescription drug plans and health insurers, retail, specialty, mail order, and long-term care (LTC) pharmacies, giving them immense power to favor the pharmacies they own over the pharmacies they don’t. This forces some pharmacies, especially LTC pharmacies, to provide life-saving medications to patients at a cost that could put them out of business and threaten patient access to essential medications, particularly in rural and medically underserved communities. Older Americans with long-term care needs require an average of 12-14 prescriptions per year. They are particularly vulnerable to soaring drug prices, and often least able to adapt when local pharmacies close. This is especially true of Medicare beneficiaries who need long-term care and typically have chronic or medically complex conditions as well. This group requires the medication management and enhanced pharmacy services that LTC pharmacies provide. Any unfair PBM practices that inhibit LTC pharmacy services or force them to close can be life-threatening for the hundreds of thousands of patients they serve daily. Today is a great first step and we thank Rep. James Comer (R-KY) for holding this important forum. Future inquiries must be bipartisan, and since LTC pharmacies and their patients are uniquely impacted by PBMs, we urge Congress to include LTC pharmacies in policy conversations like this one. What does public health mean to you? Public health is the intersection where individual patient decisions meet public policy, where medicine meets law. Bio Output Medical was founded by Dr. Jay K Joshi as an Intern managing complex Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. According to the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), community pharmacists are highly accessible health care professionals and 95% of Americans live within just 5 miles of a pharmacy. (https://ncpa.org/provider-status) And what APhA or American Pharmacist Association, the largest association of pharmacists in the US is doing is laser focusing on getting provider status for pharmacists. So why is that important when it comes to PGx as this is a PGx podcast? In this episode of DarshanTalks Podcast, the host Darshan Kulkarni Pharm.D, MS, Esq. and Guest Speaker Lewis A. Grossman discuss the Right to Therapeutic Choice. Lewis A. Grossman's recently launched book "Choose Your Medicine: Freedom of Therapeutic Choice in America" on the freedom of medicine in the USA. Lewis Grossman, Author, Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP (https://www.cov.com/) and Professor of Law at American University, Washington College of Law, had spoken about government interference in the 19th century on the healthcare industry. The conversation started off with the expert explaining his newly launched book based on freedom of therapeutic choices in America that is affected in American law and policy. The compelled speech doctrine sets out the principle that the government cannot force an individual or group to support certain expressions, this was discussed with compelled action which initially the host gave an example of how cigarette advertisements portray and mention that cigarettes are injurious to health whilst asking the expert to share his insights over this topic. He explains his constitutional law perspective on this subject that what government can make you do and what it cannot, he also mentioned about commercial speech is not protected as supposed to political speech or artistic speech. The conversation also included an interesting topic of off-labeling drugs and ancient drugs like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin used to treat Covid-19. Furthermore, if the branded company would have endorsed or used these drugs the implications are discussed in this podcast. Also, the subject of monoclonal antibodies was discussed, monoclonal antibodies are proteins created in a lab. The proteins mimic your immune system and are meant to make COVID-19 disease milder in patients who are already sick. As per the expert, the monoclonal antibodies are disseminated by EUA and not FDA approved, highly expensive. They talked about the history of sciences, pharma history, and much more differentiating with the bio-hacking, monoclonal antibodies, hydroxychloroquine, and ivermectin being in the same spectrum. In the past couple of decades compounding pharmacies have been under attack by the FDA. The FDA and compounding pharmacies are supposed to be separated unless the medications that compounding pharmacies are using are found to put the public at risk. Drug companies can only produce medications if allowed by the FDA after they have supplied years of work and evidence proving that the drug is effective and safe. In this way the FDA’s job is clear and very important. The beauty of compounding is that it’s not limited to studies here in the United States. Many compounds are based off of old medications and combinations that have simply been “grandfathered” and do not have any profit benefit for large pharmaceutical companies. Other compounds are based off of other studies that have not been submitted to the FDA and other studies are from other parts of the world, like Europe. By no means are the treatments we use in compounding pharmacies snake oil or hocus pocus. The compounding of medications is an age-old art dating back as far as the ancient Egyptians. A compounding pharmacist uses raw chemicals, powders and special equipment to make medications. Pharmacogenomics Market Access and Reimbursement Series Episode Description:   Most of us understand that the reimbursement for pharmacogenomics tests has been one barrier amongst many barriers to pharmacogenomics’ wide-scale clinical adoption. Finding myself highly frustrated with the slow clinical uptake by PGx test ordering by healthcare providers back in 2017, I brainstormed about which payers were the most vested in improving patients’ medication outcomes and who would therefore more likely to listen to my pitch about PGX decreasing adverse drug events and increasing therapeutic medication outcomes. As a consultant to self-insured employers who were seeking to lower their employees’ drug spend, I found a warm and receptive audience for pharmacogenomics. It was through my relationships with self-insured employers that I met today’s guest. Again, fate intervened, and today’s guest reached out to me via LinkedIn. Dr. Samit Shah serves as the Dean of the Regis University School of Pharmacy. John Lewis an Executive Director of Heart Valve Voice US - patient advocacy, nonprofit organization, provides patients with a united voice to improve health for people living with heart valve disease by advocating for early detection, meaningful support, and timely access to appropriate treatment for all people affected by heart valve disease. The conversation began with the effects of the corona pandemic as supposed to the years 2020 and 2021. No one anticipated the 2020 march lockdown, everyone had some plans for the year and now the ending of 2021 it hasn't been a great year too as discussed by the host and guest in the podcast. The expert said that the company was able to plan in the pandemic period, many non-profit organizations required funding and that was lacking due to pandemic also the patient advocacy aspect was discussed wherein patients were informed and all the issues that were pending were taken up by the company to ensure patient centricity. He conveyed the takeaways in the pandemic and one of them was research advocacy that involves patient preference study and evolving new opportunities or directly involved recruiting patients for clinical trials. He explained in detail and drove a comparison between the practicality of what is happening in patient advocacy and whats researchers' line of thought. The concept of patient-focused device or medical development wherein one is taking patient thoughts, wishes, and considerations into the design of the clinical trials and outcomes of the clinical trials whilst there exist patient-reported outcomes which means that it can occur during the clinical process or clinical care that may not be considered or quantified in the initial stage. Further, there are patient preferences which is an emerging area. Many pertinent questions were asked regarding patient selection, and the company's overall heart valve outlook towards the patients that were answered by the expert. #PizzaIsNotWorking campaign calls for greater support for overworked pharmacists, referenced from Becker's Health: Oklahoma City pharmacist Bled Tanoe, PharmD, recently started the #PizzaIsNotWorking social media campaign to draw awareness to the reality that free pizza and other ad-hoc rewards are not a viable solution to the burnout sweeping the pharmacy industry. Dr. Tanoe share with us that she and other pharmacists desperately need pharmacies' parent companies to make major changes to the way they support pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. "One of their biggest fears is I am going to make a mistake and it is going to cost someone's life. Someone is going to make a mistake and it will cost someone's life or their family's life," she said. Pharmacists who have joined the movement say that the added responsibilities that came with the pandemic, such as administering COVID-19 vaccines and tests, have exacerbated the problem. Many pharmacists have shared stories of quitting their jobs or wanting to enter early retirement as a result of the stress. "There are people who have been in the profession for 20-40 years who love being pharmacists who say, 'I can't do this anymore.' What does public health mean to you?  Focusing on the most vulnerable patient populations and resource-limited care settings at most risk for multi-drug resistant pathogens to improve clinical outcomes, antimicrobial stewardship programs, and infection prevention and control practices. Bio Dr. Amy Hanson received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Drake University (Des Moines, IA). She completed a PGY1 at Mercy Hospital (Chicago, IL), a PGY2 Infectious Disease Residency at Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) in Chicago, IL, and stayed on as the Infectious Disease Pharmacist at RUMC for 6 years. Amy transitioned to work as a Project Administrator in Antimicrobial Stewardship at the Chicago Department of Pubic Health in 2018, developing several antimicrobial stewardship educational campaigns and collaboratives for outpatient and long-term care healthcare settings. Currently, since July 2021, Amy is a Medical Science Liaison at IDbyDNA, a precision metagenomics diagnostic company.
