116 Anisha Patel: OMG this is my first ever SOLO episode!
OMG this is my first ever SOLO episode! I cannot believe I have finally stepped outside of my comfort zone to record this for you. I made a promise to myself that I would start these before the end of 2023 and today that becomes a reality.
This episode is really short and sweet but it's a perfect way for me to get used to talking into my microphone alone. Though I have been podcasting for 3 years, I've always had guests on my podcasts and I find these conversations really easy. You're probably surprised to hear that but it's true! This is 100% a fear of mine and today I am facing it head on.
Let me know what you think :)

098 Hong Thoong: Rising to the Challenge: A Pharmacist's Inspiring Journey of Perseverance and Determination
On this episode of the podcast, I share an honest and inspiring conversation with Hong Thoong about her career journey. Hong starts our conversation by sharing a very personal story from her childhood and how she migrated from Vietnam to the UK in the 1980s with her family. Being raised in the UK was challenging as her parents were not educated and she lived in government housing and on benefits for many years. A hard experience for a young child, however, at the age of 10, she had an epiphany that she wanted a better life for herself. The podcast episode dives deep into how this epiphany guides Hong into becoming a brilliant and inspiring pharmacist.
Hong's life story highlights the importance of identifying how to overcome challenges and in order to achieve success in any career. The conversation then moves to the challenges of being a pre-reg trainee pharmacist, including the stress of the exam and the pressure to pass on the first try. Hong shares how she failed the exam twice before passing on the third try, and how that affected her confidence. She talks about the importance of not comparing yourself to others, especially in school and university, and the value of focusing on your own journey. This serves as a reminder that success takes time and effort, and that everyone's path is unique.
As we dive deeping into the episode, Hong shares her experience as a paediatric pharmacist at a specialist hospital where she worked with children and their families to ensure they received the best care possible. She talks about the rewards of being in a specialist area of pharmacy, seeing patients grow up and being a part of their lives, and the satisfaction of helping patients with rare and challenging conditions.
The conversation then moves onto her current role at Great Ormond Street Hospital in Medicines Safety and Governance, where she focuses on ensuring patients receive safe and effective treatments and medications. We talk about the challenges of transitioning from a patient-facing role to a more behind-the-scenes role, but also the importance of recognising the impact that these roles have on patient care.
Overall, it was a really inspiring episode that shed light on the challenges and rewards of being a pharmacist.

097 Ofran Al-Mossawi: Pharmacists are perfectly positioned to lead the way in health research
In this episode of the podcast, I had the pleasure of talking to Ofran Al-mossawi about her inspiring career journey. If you are interested in pursuing a pharmacy career in research or you've thought about it in the past but you're not sure where to start, then this is perfect episode for you to tune into!
Ofran has spent most of her pharmacy career in a hospital setting and has focused her time between paediatrics, critical care, and clinical trials. At the time of this recording, she was writing the finishing touches to her thesis in order to complete her PhD. An exciting achievement for her and one we can celebrate with her as this episode launches!
Ofran and I spent most of our time talking about research in pharmacy. We are so fortunate that she is a current National Institute of Health & Care Research (NIHR) Docotoral Research Fellow with the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health. She gives us insight into:
Why Pharmacists should get involved with research
The application process for a fellowship with the NIHR and the benefits of working with them.
Why you would choose to do a fellowship with NIHR and at what point in your career would you consider it
How to best prepare for a fellowship application as it is a very competitive process, including the steps you should take from early in your career to prepare you for success
The pros and cons of a research career, including the challenges of balancing research with clinical work
The value in mentorship and building a strong support network as a researcher
Overall, this episode was both educational and motivating, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing a career in research or looking to find their true passion in life. So be sure to give it a listen and get ready to be inspired!

096 Richard Goodwin: A Pharmacy Explorer: Paediatrics, Education, Business and More
Welcome to this exciting episode of the Pharmacist Diaries Podcast! In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Richard Goodwin, a pharmacist who I immediately connected with as both our current roles are split between paediatrics and education. Richard is the current Principal Education & Training Pharmacist with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He is also Co-Chair of the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacy Group (NPPG) (London Interest Group) and will be completing a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) later in 2023. He started his career as a STEP Pharmacist with Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. This 3-year program allowed Richard to build a solid foundation as a clinical pharmacist and allowed him to identify the diverse opportunities within the field of pharmacy. During this time he was exposed to paediatrics and identified an opportunity to spend some time at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. His life as a pharmacist in paediatrics evolved from here...
Throughout the episode you will hear Richard share many examples of how he integrated education and training into various roles. His dedication to training the next generation of pharmacists is truly admirable, and I believe that his efforts will have a profound impact on the future of the pharmacy profession. One of the key takeaways from this episode was the importance of integrating students into the workplace early on in their education. By providing them with hands-on experiences and allowing them to work alongside experienced professionals, we can help them develop the professional skill and mindset needed to excel in their careers.
I also appreciated Richard's insights on the importance of reflection and journaling in personal and professional growth. As pharmacists, we often get caught up in the day-to-day tasks of our jobs, but taking the time to reflect on our experiences can help us identify areas for improvement, set goals, and ultimately become better practitioners. I was pleased to hear Richard's opinion about the importance of supporting pharmacists' emotional and mental health, especially in high-pressure work environments. The field of pharmacy is not immune to burnout, stress, and other mental health challenges, and it is encouraging to see a growing emphasis on addressing these issues and providing support for those who need it.
Overall, this episode was a fantastic reminder of the many opportunities available within the field of pharmacy. Whether you're interested in research, business, paediatrics, or education, there is a place for you in pharmacy. Thank you, Richard, for sharing your journey with us and for your dedication to the profession. Tune in to this episode of Pharmacist Diaries and be inspired!

094 Steve Tomlin: This is what I've learnt from 30 years in Paediatrics!
Today I launch the first of several podcast episodes from the Pharmacist Diaries Roadshow with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
To kickstart this podcast series, I am honoured and excited to introduce Stephen Tomlin to the podcast. Steve is an extremely passionate paediatric pharmacist who has spent over 30 years in this field. He is currently the Director of the Children’s Medicines Centre at GOSH following 3 years as their Chief Pharmacist. Prior to this, he was the lead pharmacist at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where he also became the first Paediatric Consultant Pharmacist in 2007. His main fields of expertise are paediatric medicines safety, medicines compliance and competence of the paediatric pharmacy workforce.
For many years he has worked part time as the Professional Lead of the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacy Group (NPPG), allowing him to represent paediatric pharmacy on many national forums, at government level and within the Royal Colleges and within the media. He is also vice chair of the Joint Medicines Committee for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and medicine expert on the NHSE Paediatric Medicines Clinical Reference Group.
On this episode Steve shares with us why pediatrics is such an exciting field to work in, including the challenges, the opportunities, and the sheer joy of working with pediatric patients. We also discuss the importance of understanding the unique needs of paediatric patients and the need for pharmacists to be comfortable with the uncomfortable as we don’t always have a clear answer. Steve's passion for his work is infectious, and he provides a wealth of knowledge and insights into what it takes to be a successful paediatric pharmacist.
If you're considering a career in paediatrics, you genuinely will not want to miss this episode! However, if you’re not interested in paediatrics but you want to hear a story filled with passion and purpose, you’ve come to the right place friend!

093 Special Episode: The Ups and Downs of Taking the Podcast on Tour!
Hi friends! I’m not quite sure how to contain my excitement today! Sunjay and I unexpectedly recorded this podcast episode for you all as we had some spare time on one of our recording days with Great Ormond Street Hospital and thought to use it wisely. On this episode, we decide to give you some insight into some of our latest adventures and exciting plans for the upcoming months.
In the beginning of this episode, we discuss our feelings regarding taking this podcast on the road, which was our first ever roadshow, held at the famous Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Despite some technical difficulties with the audio (which Sunjay managed to fix!!), we had a lot of fun and enjoyed working together. We are grateful for the opportunity to be creative whilst learning along the way.
I dive into discussion about my plans to launch several masterclasses this summer which I am incredibly excited about. I don’t usually get the opportunity to interact with my podcast audience so this is me taking the next steps towards knowing more about you guys! I’m making it my mission to understand what you want from this platform and how I can help you grow personally and professionally. I talk to Sunjay about international working and how I want to use my personal experience to help others who want to work abroad. We discuss the challenges and benefits of working in another country and how it can change your life.
Finally, we discuss our our upcoming joint masterclass on how to start a podcast. We share our excitement around helping people who want to create, and be different. We want to make it easy for people to start a podcast and provide a one-stop-shop for information to get started on their journey. I am creating a workbook so that people can take notes and learn along the way.
We are confident that the masterclasses will provide valuable insight and information for anyone who is interested in podcasting or international working.

We emphasise the importance of self-motivation and following your passions, even when parenting and other life challenges seem to get in the way. We acknowledge the difficulty of finding a work-life balance that works for us, but aim to encourage you to take small steps towards your goals and documenting your progress.
In addition to discussing our personal journey, we also provide practical advice for listeners who are looking to make changes in their own lives. We suggest starting by identifying what it is that truly interests and motivates you, and then taking small, consistent steps towards those goals. 087 Preeti Minhas: Tips and tricks to create more time in your life
On today's episode I am having a third conversation with Preeti Minhas on the podcast. Preeti and I had our first conversation back in September 2021, Episode 46, and a second conversation in November 2021, Episode 52. We have enjoyed getting to know each other and we are aligned in so many ways, both professional and personal, that I continue to invite her back onto the podcast!
Today’s episode focuses on TIME! We are all well aware everybody gets the same 24 hours per day to achieve whatever they put their mind to. It is common to feel that there is never enough time to finish all of the things you set out to complete. For many of us, managing our time can feel more challenging than managing our money. This is because there are no reserves or banks for people to store unused time, and once that resource is depleted, it can no longer be used. Preeti reached out to me to discuss this topic as she spends a lot of her time talking about it with colleagues and employees. People regularly reach out to me to ask how I manage two jobs, a podcast, a family and a social life. Preeti and I casually discuss our experience with time management and the tools that we use on a daily basis within the workplace, as well as at home, so we can spend time on what really matters us.
As a reminder, Preeti is currently working as the Assistant Director of Clinical Learning for Education for Health. Education for Health is a dynamic healthcare charity, providing education, training and support to a variety of healthcare professionals. A platform that you should all go and check out online as it has lots to offer for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Preeti started her pharmacy journey as a community pharmacist with Boots and became store manager after only one year of qualifying as a pharmacist! In our first conversation, it is clear that she thoroughly enjoyed her role in primary care as was passionate about leading a team of healthcare professionals. During her time with Boots, she came across a role involved with learning and development which she knew was a unique opportunity to view pharmacy from a different pair of eyes. This role led onto several other interesting opportunities in her career, one of which is her involvement with Education for Health. She is a self driven and passionate pharmacist; a true role model in this profession and it is an absolute pleasure having such a wonderful, like-minded pharmacist to enjoy conversation with.

It can be overwhelming as a trainee pharmacist to pick the right job when you qualify. Daily Dose 12: My Pregnancy Changed Everything!
If you are a parent, this clip will 100% resonate with your journey into family life. For those of you who are currently pregnant or planning on having children whilst working as a pharmacist...then tune into this clip.
Sandeep provides us all with insight into the realities of becoming a parent for the first time. It can be a lonely journey where you feel like a break in your career takes you 10 steps backwards when all you want to do is move forward.
However, parenting is all about perspective. It is a beautiful opportunity to immerse yourself in a completely new environment where your purpose changes dramatically. Your life turns upside down and for some of us this transition is extremely challenging. I know I felt that way when I had Lilyanna in 2017! BUT remember that your career is on a short pause and you can step right back into your role or potentially have the courage to step into a new position which aligns with your life as a family unit.

085 Special Episode: THIS is how we SAVED our MARRIAGE!
Hi friends! Today I am releasing a special episode of the podcast where I share an intimate conversation with my husband, Sunjay Vyas. This episode was recorded well over a year ago and I had released the content as audio only.
I am re-releasing the episode today as a reminder of where I was professionally and personally in 2021. This was when we had first moved into our new home and a few months before I found out I was pregnant again! I was celebrating the fact that the podcast had accomplished 10,000 downloads across 90 countries which was a huge achievement!
In the next few weeks, Sunjay and I will be recording another life update for you all. So much has changed since then and we are excited to share those moments with you. Please excuse my voice in the episode as I was recovering from a virus at the time...not my usual relaxing tone that you all seem to love so much! :)
