Connecting with Our Teenagers with Guest Kirsten Cobabe

I love all things teenager and so does my guest Kristen Cobabe the “teen whisperer”. When I first became a teen I found myself at a loss as to what to do and how to interact with my daughter. It was murky water and I struggled to say the least. But I have found my way and now I am enjoying the teenage years more than I thought I would. Today I’m joined by Kirsten Cobabe, who has worked with teenagers since she herself was a teenager as a mentor. In our discussion today, we talk about how to communicate best with both teens and tweens. This is one of the most significant developmental stages for them-- it's only right that we try our best to guide them without forcing their hands. Be sure to listen in! The best way to reach our teenagers is through connection, not control.   Episode Highlights: Kirsten’s background and experience How dealing with teens and tweens is different from a kid What you need to know about raising a teenager The changes that come with the teenager stage Why saying no is not our job as parents We need to choose our relationship with our kids over small issues   Connect with Kirsten: @kirstencobabe | Instagram Kirsten Cobabe | Website   How can we “shame-proof” our parenting? Do Our Children Have the Right to Say “No” with Guest Sterna

When our child says “no” it can send us into emotional turmoil both because of how we were raised and how society views a child who stands up for themselves. But no doesn’t need to be a dirty word, and our children need to have the space to explore standing up for themselves. If they aren’t allowed to do it at home how can they ever set boundaries as they grow up. What of yes too, if we are insisting on “yes” is that yes we receive authentic or is it coerced somehow and only used as a way to please us?   Sterna is my guest today, she helps us unravel this sticky parenting moment, and gives us her incredible insights into why no is more than just a child being defiant on purpose and ways we can work through the moments when our children use no.   Episode Highlights: Why “No” isn’t always bad Collaboration works better than blind obedience Letting go of complete control Respecting our kids, so they respect us   How can we “shame proof” our parenting? Aggression is a common occurrence in children and we see it often when there’s a new sibling. How to Use Connection to Help Move Through Thumb Sucking

Kids have different ways to cope with stressful situations. Some resort to more vocal ways-- while others tend to go inward as a way to cope with what’s hard in life. It’s hard for us to know exactly how to approach them with love and kindness while still helping them move through tough behavior. Joining me this episode is a follower and active participant on the Facebook group, Jillian.  Jillian, like so many of us, struggles with a behavior that she can’t quite figure out how to navigate. We take a look at the whole child, the underlying and the more obvious and try to find ways to meet her daughter where she is using connection.  I know others struggle with thumb sucking and pacifiers and hope this episode is helpful.                Episode Highlights: Familial background The root cause of thumb sucking  What we can do to curb it without the use of shame   Check out the Empathy Podcast and learn why our kids need us most when they appear to be at their worst.  Download the FREE guide - HOW TO HAVE EMPATHY How do you come alongside your child when they are upset? The Case Against Mindfulness Jars and Cool-Down Corners

At some point in your child’s life, they will experience things which may cause overwhelm, and we won't be able to prevent them from feeling these tough emotions. However, we can be the safe place for them to be when things are tough.  Having deep empathy for our children and allowing them to fully emote helps those feelings pass, be processed so our child can move forward and be the cooperative kind kid they are meant to be. Mindfulness Jars, Cool Down Corners and Breathing Techniques may "get" kids to calm down, but at what expense? Where have the feelings gone and what will then glean from our expectation of calm? Listen in as Michelle explains just this.   Episode Highlights: What are the pitfalls of mindfulness jars and cool-down corners and breathing techniques? What can you do when things are difficult for your child? Being empathic shows unconditional love. What is co-regulation and how can we model it? Telling our child they need to calm down might be giving them the wrong message. Redefining Parenting: Cooperation, Not Control with Hannah and Kelty of Upbringing

Resistance is just something that comes with parenting, be it telling our kids to turn off their phones or brush their teeth. But-- that doesn’t always have to be the case. We as parents can make the conscious choice to prioritise our personal relationships, using them to teach our kids what has to be done for themselves, effectively building up their own independence and self-control. In today's episode, I have Kelty and Hannah from Upbringing, here to discuss a new approach to connecting with our kids, so we can raise young adults that have a stronger sense of self and a more stable approach to life. They believe that by choosing to connect with our kids instead of controlling them, it can result in a relationship that positively reinforces self-discipline and accomplishing tasks for themselves-- instead of them simply following our words.   Episode Highlights: Who They Are The parenting dynamics of old Why the old dynamics need to change What you can do instead of power-parenting Focus on building relationships with your kids How to approach your kids to get a better response Kids and their safe spaces   About our Guests:   Hannah and Kelty currently run Upbringing-- an inclusive community that promotes the elevation of growth and connection. Through their beliefs in parenting, they work to redefine how we raise our kids while avoiding the conventional beliefs of old. Holding a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stanford, the two have grown to become certified Parent Educators through the Positive Discipline Association, Family Life Coaches, and completed programs that focus on mindfulness-based stress reduction.   To take advantage of the Upbringing free Listening guide click here and enter code PEACE.   Connect with Hannah and Kelty from Upbringing: UPBRINGING | Podcast, Speaking, Coaching with Hannah + Kelty Upbringing ⋓ Hannah + Kelty (@upbringing.co) | Instagram Upbringing | YouTube Upbringing | Pinterest   Enjoy today’s episode?
