Episode 161: Amy Watkins Jensen, Founder of Women on The Stand | The LDS Church says women are equals. Prove it!

My guest today is Amy Watkins Jensen, faithful member of the LDS Church, wife, mother, and creator of the IG account, Women on the Stand. This episode is primarily for members of the LDS Church but has implications in all religions and organizations. Why is this important? In a typical LDS Church meeting, for example only the Bishop and his counselors are seated on the stand behind the pulpit. Anyone visiting that ward (congregation) can look up and know who the leaders are.    In the Oakland, CA Stake for the past decade, the women’s organization leaders have been sitting on the stand during ward and stake meetings. Fair and balanced right? No problem. Back in October of 2023, a member of the churchs area authority for that region of the country decided having women leaders represented on the stand was a problem and put an end to this practice.   This was an abosolute slap in the face to the women of the church on so many levels and it hurt. A lot. You see there was nothing broken here. This practice was benefiting thousands of people in these Bay Area wards yet some leader, not from the area, decided, this was just not how things were supposed to be done.   Amy began her search for answers at the local level and turned up empty. Letters to the general church offices also seemed to have fallen on deaf ears for now, so she has created this community to spread the news and make some change. The Salt Lake Tribune ran an OpEd and here is their podcast about the story too.   I’m sorry ladies that you have been getting a raw deal for like forever it seems and I may be a little late to the game but cannot unsee the imbalance. I call my brothers in the church to step up and push for better visibility for our sisters. They matter more than we have been showing.   Contact Amy: [email protected]   #WomenOnTheStand #LDSWomen #PrivilegeMakesUsBlind #Patriarchy #EyesAreOpen #CannotUnSee #Othering #Tribalism #LetUsBeSeen #LDSChurch #RussellMNelson #APleaToMySisters #LDSChurchPresident #Feminism #SexismHurtsMenToo #LordIsItI #JesusVisitedWomenFirst #OaklandStake #SLTribune #SlapInTheFace

Episode 156: Jake, Part 2 | Stake Relief Society President tells her bi-sexual daughter's coming out story.

Welcome back to the second episode in my series for LDS (Mormon) parents of gay children. In part 1, Episode 155, Jake guided us through this first phase of his coming out journey as a 34 yo man to his parents a little over 4 months ago.    On today’s episode, we have an additional special guest, Sue Petersen, who was the Stake Relief Society president in the Elk Ridge Utah Stake for the past 5 years. Sue has a grown daughter who has been in a lesbian relationship for the past 7 years. She shares with us how she has navigated that path, the mistakes she made and the bridges she has built by following Christ's example.   For those not familiar with the LDS church, the Relief Society is the womens organization within the church. In Elk Ridge there are 12 wards or congregations and Sue was the leader over all those.   I want to say in the spirit of disclosure, we are still only getting Jake’s perspective at this stage. We don’t use his last name or call out who parents are out of respect for their privacy so please keep that in mind as you listen.   Sue holds a support group for moms of gay children every month on the second Thursday, 7-9pm. My guest today is Brian Swan. He is a principal broker and attorney with over 20 years of experience in the real estate industry. Most agents know him through Stringham Real Estate School where he was the President for several years. Through his experience in sales, brokering, education, and law, his experience lends him an expertise in the industry that few, if any, have. He now operates his own brokerage, V Real Estate Agency where he focuses on training and coaching his agents to think like lawyers, perform like business owners, and rise to a higher level in their real estate practice.  Brian is on the program today to add some clarity to the many discussions being had by brokers and agents all across the country and how this could change the real estate industry and prepare for it.   Brian's Social Media Contacts Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/bri.swan Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/brianxswan/   Recommended source options to followup on the verdict https://www.rismedia.com/ https://www.housingwire.com/ https://www.inman.com/ https://therealdeal.com/   #MLS #NAR #NationalAssociationOfRealtors #BuyerAgents #VBrokerage #BrianSwan #SubAgency #UtahRealEstate #UAR #UtahAssociationOfRealtors #UtahCentraAssociationOfRealtors #UCAR #SaltLakeBoardOfRealtors #WashingtonCountyBoardOfRealtors #RealEstateLaw #Verdict #RealEstateStatusQuo #KellerWilliams #BerkshireHatahawayHomeServices #ColdwellBanker #ParrishPodcast #ParrishTheThoughtPodcast #BurnettVNAR #SitzerBurnettVerdict

Episode 147: Cary Snowden | The obituary whisperer.

Welcome back to the show everyone and happy Halloween to those of you into all the dark and spooky things. Today, in light of the passing of Friends superstar, Matthew Perry and all the recent and and not-so-recent celebrity passings, my guest is Cary Snowden. He has been writing some of the most creative and heartfelt celebrity obituaries I’ve ever seen. Jump on in for a stroll into the macabre, the funny, the witty and sometimes a little heartbreak as we talk about his connection to the famously departed. Here is Matthew Perry's Obituary Matthew Perry has left the building. As one of the 'Friends,' Perry entertained the world and influenced culture through the 1990s in what was then the most popular sitcom TV had ever produced. Friends was huge, with many of my peers hosting weekly watching parties. We all loved it. Lynne and I still watch reruns as late as this week. Friends produced quotes and drama that were repeated and discussed at every company water cooler for the next week. Perry played Chandler Bing, a quick-witted Friend who offered the voice of reason to roomies Ross and Joey. He was my favorite on the show, and by the sound of it, probably yours, too. He did a handfull of other shows and a movie or two, but Friends will always be his legacy. He was terrific, and has left us far too soon. Drowning in a hot tub. 54.   Contact Cary Today Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/csnowden Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/snowydancer/ #ObituaryWhisperer #LeavingTheBuilding #DepecheMode #Fletch #ElvisHasLeftTheBuilding #SoAndSoDied #Prince #SuzanneSomers #MatthewPerry #MatthewPerryDied #Friends #CarySnowden #SnowyDancer #ObituaryParty #WriteYourOwnObituary #Macabre #ObituaryBoardGames #HasLeftTheBuilding #HistoryOfTheDead #DigitalCemetary #MatthewPerryDies #MatthewPerryDead

Episode 144: Kris Kristensen - Part 4 | Dying would have been easy. Living is the hard part.

Hello Parrish the Thoughters. Yes that is a word and you are my groupies. Enjoy your place in the club. My guest today for the fourth time is my friend Kris Kristensen. For those that are joining us for the first time or if it’s been a minute, three years ago, Kris was diagnosed with stage 4 Chondrosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer in his pelvis and was literally weeks from the disease taking his life. To save him, doctors performed a grueling surgery called a Pelvectomy. Yes it’s as harrowing as it sounds. The entire left side of his pelvis had to be amputated and in the process he lost a perfectly good left leg. Needless to say his life was forever changed and this interview is part 4 in a series of life check-ins to see how he is often winning the battle to get his life back to a somewhat normal state and also a deep dive into the darkest recesses of his soul where he often ends up while trying to make sense of the why behind this new journey.  He tells me that dying would have been easy. Living is the hardest part. Below are links to the previous three episodes of his journey. Interview #3 - The doctors took my leg and now my career won't have me back...yet. Interview #2 - 9 months with my new leg and an MBA in life. Interview #1 - I complained and it saved my life. Kris' Blog Journey #Chondrosarcoma #CancerSucks #Amputee #AgeDiscrimination #DisabilityDiscrimination #CancerIsntADeathSentence #RabbitHole #Perserverance #GOAT #ServeSomeone #WinningAtLife #DontGoDownTheRabbitHole #TheRabbitHole #PhantomPainsAreReal #Rolodex #GoingInAnotherDirection #CancerSurvivor #SickOfCancer
