Kenneth Roth: On Harvard University Ban & Why Human Rights Campaigners won’t be Silenced over Israel
Palestine Deep Dive and the Foreign Press Association (New York) are live with the ‘the Godfather of Human Rights’ Kenneth Roth, for a DeepDive into Harvard’s reported decision to block him from taking up a fellowship over his organisation’s criticism of Israel’s human rights record.
The Harvard Kennedy School has allegedly bowed to pressure, according to the Nation, during a period when major donors and prominent Jewish organisations were particularly unhappy that Human Rights Watch, which Roth directed from 1993-2022, has recently accused Israel of practising apartheid.
According to Human Rights Watch’s 213 page report published in April 2021 illustrating the nature of Israel's apartheid, Israel systematically oppresses the Palestinian people both across the occupied Palestinian territory and within Israel itself.
Join Mark Seddon and FPA President Ian Williams as we learn why Roth feels his senior fellowship position at Harvard has been blocked, and what challenges human rights campaigners are facing today over criticism of Israel.

27th June 2021: We're live with for a DeepDive illuminating the situation on the ground in Masafer Yatta, where thousands of Palestinians are facing imminent expulsion.
In the early 1980s the IDF declared the area a firing zone (“Firing Zone 918”), an action viewed by experts as a violation of international law and one clearly undertaken with the objective of forcibly displacing the Palestinian residents of the area to take control of the land.
Last month, the Israeli Supreme Court rejected the residents' claims to the land in favour of the military, declaring the region a closed-off training area following the two-decade legal battle.
Residents fear expulsion and are already at the mercy of Israeli home demolitions and property confiscations while also facing regular harassment and violence from both the Israeli army and Israeli settlers.
We’re live with Basil Al-Adraa, a local resident, activist & journalist, and Yuval Abraham, a Jerusalem-based journalist and activist.

Mark Seddon is live with Great March of Return co-founder Ahmed Abu Artema. Ahmed describes the weekly 18-month March as a 'Scream for Life' by the people of Gaza in this illuminating Al Jazeera.
But what impact did the Great March of Return have on the outside world ? Did it draw global attention to the suffering of the people of Gaza? Or was it grossly misrepresented in the media? And what impact did the March have on the people of Gaza themselves?
The UN reported that over 270 Palestinians were killed and 36,143 injured (over 7,000 with live ammunition), with hundreds of amputations and tens of thousands of traumatised participants and family members. Can it really be considered a success?
More recently the International Criminal Court announced it will be investigating Israel for potential war crimes, including crimes committed against Palestinians participating in the Great March of Return. Is this a source of hope for Palestinians in Gaza searching for justice?

We're looking at the threats the movement has faced in the UK especially and how they might be connected to Israel’s ongoing settler-colonialism on the ground.
With attacks on NGOs, human rights defenders and activists in Palestine itself and with apparent attempts to permanently conclude the Question of Palestine in Israel’s favour through Trump’s Deal of the Century and defunding of UNRWA in particular, we’ll be looking at how to renew effective solidarity with Palestine in an atmosphere of crackdown and repression.
We’re delighted to be joined by two prominent campaigners and organisers with many years experience at the heart of the Palestine solidarity movement, Ryvka Barnard and Akram Salhab.
Ryvka Barnard is the Head of Civic Space at War on Want
Akram Salhab is a British-Palestinian organiser and migrant justice campaigner. He was recently the lead voice featured in Channel 4’s documentary examining the Palestinian experience of British colonialism.

Larry suggests there will likely be no significant change in official policy, but with Trump, Pompeo & Kushner gone that is significant change in itself worth celebrating. But what about settlements, the ICC [International Criminal Court], the embassy move in Jerusalem and condemnation of 'kneecapping' in Gaza? Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson served as Chief of Staff fo

Palestinian leadership in the West Bank is reportedly resuming its security coordination with Israel and has returned its previously recalled ambassadors to the UAE and Bahrain. But does Netanyahu’s reported visit to Saudi Arabia last week indicate normalisation among the Arab countries might still be accelerating? On previous episodes we’ve heard how the threat of COVID-19 is greatly enhanced for Palestinians living under siege and occupation and this week reports indicate Gaza is approaching the long-feared scenario of its health system reaching breaking point, but what is being done to respond to these conditions of crisis?
