Laura Cathcart Robbins
Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

David Manheim - The Only Addict Who Started a Podcast with His Friend from Rehab

David Manheim - The Only Addict Who Started a Podcast with His Friend from Rehab

David Manheim is an American podcaster who currently hosts the popular addiction podcast Dopey. Dave slid into the embrace of heroin and stayed there for around 15 years, until just four months before he started the podcast in 2016 with his friend Chris, who he had met in rehab. Unfortunately, Chris died of a drug overdose in 2018, along with many other people who were featured on the podcast over the years.  Laura opens the show by asking David about how he fell into addiction. David explains his love for marijuana, the weed culture, and how working for a weed delivery business eventually led him to acquiring and trying heroin.  David then talks about his former podcast partner Chris, who he had met in rehab. The two started their podcast Dopey together, and put out episodes every week until Chris’ death from a drug overdose in 2018.  This leads David to recall numerous other guests on the Dopey podcast that have also overdosed over the years. After the death of these people, but especially his former host Chris, David talks about how the show has changed and expresses his willingness to continue putting out weekly episodes.  For More On David Manheim:  Email - [email protected]  Website - https://about.me/davidmanheim Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/dopeypodcast/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidmanheim/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Davidmanheim/ X:  https://x.com/davidmanheim Podcast - https://dopeypodcast.com/the-podcast/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Jodi Miller

Scott Talks to Jodi Miller

Jodi Miller is a comedian, writer, and actress who’s been performing stand up for over 20 years and has also done 4 military tours including going overseas to entertain troops in Afghanistan. She currently works as the head writer for the syndicated comic game show Funny You Should Ask, and she hosts the show The World’s Funniest Weather. Her new comedy special Decades in the Making, is available now on Youtube.  Laura opens the show by talking about where her and Scott met Jodi, as well as asking her about her thoughts on being a mom growing up and when she finally decided to try to conceive. After being unable to conceive naturally, that was when Jodi decided to adopt.  Jodi then tells the story behind adopting her daughter, which included a last minute and unexpected phone call from her lawyer instructing her to fly out to Kentucky the following day, during COVID, to pick up her daughter. This leads to a realization of just how hard it is to be a single parent to a young child.  After that, Laura asks Jodi about her current dating life as a single mother in Los Angeles, as well as her old podcast Don’t Call Me Ma’am. Jodi then tells a popular story from her life about nailing the audition for America’s Got Talent, only to be excused by producers for no reason. This leads to some praise from Laura over Jodi’s work on the comic TV game show Funny You Should Ask.  For More On Jodi Miller:Email:   [email protected]: http://www.jodimillercomedy.com Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/jodimillercomic/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodi-miller-a70a008/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JodiMillercomic/ X:  https://twitter.com/JodiMillerComic Podcast - Don't Call Me Ma'am https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dont-call-me-maam/id1521281485 Book- https://www.amazon.com/stores/Jodi-Miller/author/B0049OK9S6?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=trueBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli

Scott Talks to Dr. Michael Caparrelli

Dr. Michael Caparrelli graduated from Zion Bible College, and thereafter, pastored an inner city church for 16 years. In 2021, he finished his PhD in Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. Currently, he’s a keynote speaker in churches, prisons, schools & other venues across the U.S. on a wide variety of mental health subjects. He’s authored five books that help the psychologically troubled overcome life adversities. His most recent book, Monster Mirror, features his 100 Hour Case Study on David Berkowitz, the ‘Son of Sam’, a convicted serial killer who held New York City hostage with fear from 1976 – 1977 and gave his life to Christ in prison in 1988.  Dr. Caparrelli starts off by giving a bit of his background as a pastor for 16 years, before deciding to get his PhD after suffering 2 heart attacks. He goes on to explain his troubled childhood with a father in prison and being sent to juvenile prison as a teenager.  He then dives into the case of David Berkowitz, from first hearing about “the Son of Sam” as a kid to eventually meeting with him in prison. Laura asks Michael about jailhouse conversions, and how he deals with the emotional exhaustion that comes with being a pastor who visits violent criminals in prison.  After that they get more in-depth about the life of David Berkowitz, the crimes he committed, and various family members who were affected by his murders. Michael gives his opinions on David’s mental health issues, and goes to explore some of the things that could turn someone into a serial killer.  Before they wrap, Dr. Caparrelli explains the title of his book: Monster Mirror: 100 Hours with David Berkowitz, Once Known As Son of Sam, On Mental Health, & Evil Phenomena  For More on Dr Michael Caparrelli:Email - [email protected]: https://unmuted.app Linkedin- https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-caparrelli-104249298 Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/cappyphd/ Book  -https://unmuted.app/store.htmlBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Robinne Lee

What if your Jamaican born parents immigrated to the United States and expected you to uphold the morals and codes with which they had been raised, but placed you in a diverse environment where many of those rules simply didn’t apply? Robinne Lee, actress, author, producer, grew up in Westchester County New York and was often the only Jamaican American in the room. But what would you do if one day you realized that your peers weren’t comfortable unless they could put you in a category; Black or mixed? American or Jamaican? Worldly or naive? Would you try to conform to a standard that puts other people at ease? Or would you defy the stereotypes and live a life unexpected?  More From Robinne Lee: Publicity - Jessica Cohen [email protected] Website - home | robinnelee Instagram- @robinneleeFacebook: Robinne Lee | Facebook X:  Robinne Lee (@robinnelee) / X (twitter.com) Book- The Idea Of You the idea of you | robinneleeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Wisconsin Tiff

Wisconsin Tiff is an OnlyFans model who creates adult content online with older gentlemen. Laura opens the show by asking Tiff about her mother being murdered by her boyfriend when she was only 4 years old. This led her to be cared for by her single father who was not ready to take care of her and her brother.  Before becoming an OnlyFans model, Tiff was working at a school in the lunchroom when COVID hit. After losing her job, she began making online content and became an influencer. This, along with a split from her ex-husband, then led her to begin making adult content online.  Wisconsin Tiff explains how and why she got into making content with the specific demographic of older men. She explains the adult filming process and what a typical day is like for her when she’s working. She also goes on to explain how she got banned from a few nursing homes due to her line of work.  Before they wrap, Tiff tells Laura about having her own sense of agency, and appreciating the fact that she’s in total control of whatever she wants to do while not having to rely on a man for anything.  For More on Wisconsin Tiff:Email_ [email protected]_@wisconsintiffOnlyFans_@wisconsintiffInstagram_@wisconsintiffFansly_@wisconsintiffBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Dianne Bondy

Scott Talks to Dianne Bondy

Dianne Bondy is a social justice activist, author, accessible yoga teacher, and the leader of the Yoga For All Movement. Her inclusive approach to yoga empowers anyone to practice—regardless of their shape, size, ethnicity, or level of ability.Dianne’s commitment to increasing diversity in yoga has been recognized in her work with Pennington’s, Gaiam, and the Yoga & Body Image Coalition, as well as in speaking engagements at Princeton, Duke, University of Buffalo and UC Berkeley on Yoga, Race, and Diversity. Dianne is the author of the international best-selling book Yoga for Everyone. Dianne opens the show by telling Laura about the time she went to a yoga class and had the staff making judgements about her based on her body type. This led Dianne to decide and open her own judgement-free yoga practice that focused on inclusiveness. Dianne discusses her experience dealing with body image as a child. This included her parents pushing her to diet and exercise at a young age, which led to an eating disorder by age 12. After dealing with starvation, binging, and purging on a regular basis, Dianne realized that people will always find something about you to pick on, and she discovered the need to draw boundaries in life and not always focus on people pleasing. After being told by her doctors that she needed to gain weight in order to get pregnant, she had her son which became the catalyst for overcoming her eating disorder. Laura and Dianne then have a conversation about Ozempic and seeing food as more than just fuel for your body. Dianne talks about hosting events and realizing that sometimes a pivot is needed, and as long as there’s honesty and transparency in your intention then people will find it if it’s truly for them. Before they wrap, Dianne talks about her current relationship with her mother, and how she’s always on some kind of diet. She also tells Laura about planning a trip to Napa in the near future. For More on Dianne:Email:  [email protected]: www.diannebondyyoga.comIG: @diannebondyyogaofficialFB: @DianneBondyYogaOfficial/YouTube: DianneBondyYogaBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Scott Talks to Dr. Carl Erik Fisher

Carl Erik Fisher, M.D., is an addiction psychiatrist, bioethics scholar, author, and person in recovery. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, where he studies and teaches law, ethics, and policy relating to psychiatry and neuroscience, especially issues related to substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors.  He also maintains a private clinical practice focused on complementary and integrative approaches to addiction and recovery. His book, The Urge: The History of Addiction, is available on Amazon. And his podcast, Flourishing After Addiction, is available wherever you listen to podcasts.  Dr. Carl Erik opens the show by telling Laura about his alcohol and stimulant dependency before and throughout college. This led to a manic episode that resulted in him being admitted to a psych ward he had previously interviewed at. He goes on to explain some of his manic behaviors while being treated, including thinking that he knew better than the doctors caring for him. He also explains the specialized program he was put into and given a specialized 5-year contract so it wouldn’t negatively affect his career.  Dr. Carl Erik then talks about “good drugs” vs “bad drugs” and how they disproportionately affect minority communities. This leads to a conversation about the history of addiction and how addiction can become your identity.   Before they finish, Laura asks about his time after getting out of the psych ward, as well as what someone should do when they don’t think they’re getting the right treatment for their substance abuse issues.  For More on Carl:[email protected] Media: @DrCarlErik on most platforms:http://www.twitter.com/@drcarlerikhttps://www.instagram.com/drcarlerik/https://www.facebook.com/DrCarlErik/Also: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carl-erik-fisher-937360/Website: https://www.carlerikfisher.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support. Collier Landry Is The Only One Who Put His Father In Prison For Murdering His Mother

Imagine if as an eleven-year-old, you were woken up by the sounds of your father murdering your mother? Filmmaker and podcaster, Collier Landry testified on the witness stand against his father at age 12, and it was his testimony that helped put his father in prison for life. But what would you do if you’d confronted your father in prison in the hopes that he would tell you why he did it, but found that he was incapable of telling the truth? Would you verbally attack him in a fit of justified rage? Or would you hug him and tell him you loved him before saying goodbye. Charlie Cifarelli Is The Only One Adopted A Dog And Became A Citizen Of The World

Imagine reading the paper and seeing a horrific story about a dog who died after being shot by the police, and inexplicably feeling that the public was being misled, that the dog was not dead, but alive. A former correctional officer and businessman, Charlie Cifferalli was living in Nebraska when we read the story of Star The Dog getting shot in the head by a New York City police officer while she was trying to protect her unhoused guardian. So what would you do if everyone you contacted said that Star was dead, but you just KNEW that she was still alive? Would you decide to let the notion go and get back to your life? The Anxiety Sisters Are The Only Ones In The Room Explaining How To Survive Anxiety

Imagine sharing everything with your best friend, and then discovering that the two of you had another common bond, something that appeared to set you apart from your peers - an anxiety disorder. Counselors, mental health advocates, authors and podcasters, Abbe Greenberg and Maggie Sarachek met in college and soon discovered that they were both long-time anxiety sufferers. But what would you do if you’d figured out that the combination of good information and community could equal relief? Would you think, “a sisterhood might be nice, but it sounds like too much work?” Or would you launch an online community that shows over 200,000 members how to live happily with anxiety? Ryan Dusick Is The Only Rock Star Who Found It Harder to Breathe

What if you were the drummer for Maroon 5, and soon after you became one of the best-known bands in the world, you realized that there was something very wrong, something that impaired your ability to play? Founding member of Maroon 5, author and associate marriage and family therapist, Ryan Dusick, found himself keeping his condition a secret from Adam Levine and the rest of his bandmates. Hoping that he’d never have to reveal to the others what was really going on. But what would you do if one day your bandmates confronted you and asked you to take a step back? Would you insist on continuing anyway, unwilling to let go of the band you’d help build? Or would you take a step back, way back, and change the course of your life forever?
