Laura Cathcart Robbins
Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.
On My Nightstand: Enter Racial by Laura Cathcart Robbins
Today’s On My Night Stand-read, Enter-Racial, was written by Laura Cathcart Robbins. It is the story of when she flew to Richmond, Virginia to meet her boyfriend Scott’s father for the first time, while he lay dying in the ICU. You’ll hear her talk about the fear of being a Black woman walking into the seat of the confederacy and meeting a man on his deathbed, who up until that moment, had no idea that she was Black.
Laura Cathcart Robbins is an author, freelance culture writer, and host of the popular podcast, The Only One In The Room, living in Studio City, California. She has been active for many years as a speaker and school trustee and is credited for creating The Buckley School’s nationally recognized committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Her recent articles in Huffpo and The Temper on the subjects of race, recovery, and divorce have garnered her worldwide acclaim. She is a 2018 LA Moth StorySlam winner and currently sits on the advisory board for the San Diego Writer’s Festival and the Outliers HQ podcast Festival. Laura is also a founding member of Moving Forewords, the first national memoirist collective of its kind. Find out more about her on her website, or you can look for her on Facebook, on Instagram, and follow her on Twitter.

Rebecca Metz Is The Only One Who Wouldn’t Change a Thing Episode 76
What if, while growing up, you found that you preferred sneakers to heels and jeans to dresses? And because you didn’t really fit in with your peers, you thought maybe if things were different, if you were different, life might be easier.
Actress, Rebecca Metz, chimed in once on set and joined the chorus of women talking about going on a diet.
But what would you do if your co-worker wondered aloud why you would want to alter yourself for a part, when you were already working? Would you dismiss her comment as flattery and start counting calories? Or would you realize that being comfortable in your own skin is actually your greatest asset?

SUNDAY EDITION: Vaughn Rush Is The Only Black, Gay, Male-Entertainer/Iraq War Veteran In The Room
In December of 2010, the House and Senate voted in favor of repealing and over-turning the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell." President Obama then signed it into law in December of 2010 and then the following year, the nation decided that homosexuals would no longer fear discharge from the military by admitting to their sexual preference. Over 13,000 servicemen and women were discharged for being gay while the don't ask, don't tell policy was in effect.
Today, we have Vaughn Rush, a male entertainer and Iraq War veteran who lives in San Diego California. Originally from Jamaica, Queens, New York, Vaughn grew up studying theater and dance. He served 7 years in the military as a Behavioral Health Specialist and Combat medic, deploying to Iraq in 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

SUNDAY EDITION: Nahomie and Ronald Are The Only Ones Blessed To Have Children With Sickle Cell Disease
When I was a kid, everyone in our neighborhood knew about sickle cell disease. That is...we all knew that it made Black kids sick, sick enough to go to the hospital sometimes. We knew that it was painful and that the bouts came on suddenly, and caused kids to miss school, families to miss work. The parents of kids with Sickle Cell Disease made a big deal out of every single sneeze and canceled long-awaited sleepovers during flu season, out of what felt like an overabundance of caution. Looking back, I realize that we who didn’t deal with it first hand didn’t really know that much about it. In fact, until long after I was an adult, and Prodigy from the hip-hop duo, Mobb Deep died in 2017, I don’t think I really comprehended Sickle Cell’s fatality.
In this very special episode of The Only One In The Room, we talk to Nahomie Acelin and Ronald Felix. Parents who have chosen to grapple with their family’s sickle cell disease in a very special way -- by making their three young sons the stars of a superhero comic book series.

The NOW Normal: Jason Backe Is The Only One Who Refused To Close
For salon owners, the margins are usually tight. “A good salon makes only 5 to 6 percent on the bottom line and has to have the owner working with a full book of clients,” according to Allure Magazine. Monthly business expenses can include everything from payroll, products, cleaning services, utilities, marketing, and of course rent.
Unfortunately, all of these costs don’t disappear just because a pandemic has decimated income. Some landlords are threatening legal action if salon owners don’t pay. As some owners struggle to pay rent, digging deeper into minimal cash reserves available, the effect has been felt by every assistant, receptionist, colorist, stylist, and janitor. Here to dive into this we have Jason Backe. Jason is the Founder of Starring by Ted Gibson Salon Concept and Co-creator of Starring by Ted Gibson products. SUNDAY EDITION: Chris Hunter Is The Only One Redefining Masculinity
What makes a man a man? Chris Hunter tells us about the experience that changed his mind regarding America’s hypermasculine culture.
Chris Hunter is the Co-Founder and CEO of Koia, the 100 percent plant protein drink that is naturally craveable and uses simple ingredients to deliver unparalleled nutrition. His stamp on the beverage industry first began in 2005 with Phusion Projects. After seeing the huge popularity in combining caffeine and alcohol, Hunter and his partners created Four Loko, a high-profile flavored malt beverage that grew to be the eighth largest brewers in the country at its peak.
Chris believes plant protein is the future, but that it will only work if people love how it tastes. Koia achieves this as it’s low sugar and high protein but doesn’t compromise on flavor. Koia is now sold in more than 5,000 stores across the country.

The NOW Normal: Obed Magny Is The Only Police Officer Teaching Emotional Intelligence In The Room
“The police are the community and the community is the police. If we don’t start recognizing that simple fact, if we don’t start healing – together, we will continue to wake up to the same headlines of unarmed black men being shot, of police officers being ambushed, and of a growing rift between police and the people they’re sworn to protect.”
Today’s guest is police officer, Dr. Obed Magny. Dr. Magny grew up in Boston, Massachusetts where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Dr. Magny relocated to Sacramento where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Emergency Services Administration from the California State University at Long Beach, and a Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne. SUNDAY EDITION: Melissa Barker Is The Only Trauma Survivor In The Room Helping Women Heal Their Own Trauma
Although women are at greater risk for negative consequences following traumatic events, many often hesitate to seek mental health treatment. Survivors often wait years to receive help, while others never receive treatment at all. Untreated posttraumatic symptoms not only have tremendous mental health implications but can also lead to adverse effects on physical health. Female survivors may encounter physical symptoms including headaches, gastrointestinal problems, and sexual dysfunction. Although the mental and physical symptoms of PTSD-stress can be quite debilitating, trauma is often undiagnosed by health professionals due to a lack of training, time, and resources.
In this episode, we’re talking to Melissa Barker, founder, and CEO of The Phoenix Project, a digital community that celebrates healing and authentic connections.

SUNDAY EDITION: Laura Carney Is The Only One Completing Her Father’s Bucket List
Webster’s definition of a bucket list is simple: "a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying".
But picture this: Your father’s life is taken by a distracted driver, and after his death, you find a bucket list that was created the year you were born - some items checked off and others still not accomplished. Gwen Ela Is The Only Nurse In The Room Explaining Why The Risk Is Worth The Reward
Now that coronavirus vaccines are being distributed, the first people to get it have become de facto ambassadors for it, reassuring the public that it’s safe. As U.S. states figure out how to roll out the inoculations, some people are wondering whether to get it at all, often because they’re scrolling in online communities where emotional anti-vaxxer anecdotes spread faster than accepted science.
Today we have Gwen Ela, a lac-USC, Registered Nurse. Gwen works in med-surg and lives with her husband and 5-year-old son in Southern California. Not only was Gwen one of the first people to receive her Covid vaccine, she helped to convince her mother (who is also a nurse) to get her vaccine as well.

Traci Kearney and Rochelle Webb Are The Only One’s Joining Forces To Prove Christopher Kearney’s Innocence
To round out our 2020, we wanted to bring you something really special as our last episode of the year. Previous guests Rochelle Webb of Episode 46: Rochelle Webb Is The Only One Who Finds Power In Being Self-Partnered and Traci Kearney of Episode 53: Traci Kearney Is The Only One Fighting To Prove Her Husband's Innocence combine forces to come together with one mission: to bring Traci Kearney's husband Chris Kearney home.
Former Only One In The Room guest Rochelle Webb heard Traci Kearney's heartfelt and powerful message while listening to her story on our podcast and was quick to ask Laura to be connected so she can jump into action to help Traci bring her wrongfully accused husband home to his wife and 2 children. In this episode we talk with the both of them on how they are joining forces to make it happen.

The NOW Normal: Bliss Besinger Is The Only One Who Wasn’t Expected To Survive
Picture this: Two weeks after a traumatic birth and a cerebral palsy diagnosis, you are adopted and taken to a small town in the south where you and your siblings are the only Black children with white parents. Imagine then, being thirteen-years-old and making the decision to come out and tell your family that you are a lesbian.
Nineteen-year-old Bliss Besinger is now a sophomore at Meredith College, an all-girl liberal arts college in Raleigh, North Carolina where she is the only Black student in the theater department. You heard Bliss’s mom, Deb Besinger, talk about her when we interviewed her for season six. Deb’s episode is The Only White Mom with Adopted Black Children.

SUNDAY EDITION: Kerri Robertson Is The Only Health Coach In The Room Fighting Diet Culture
Weight stigma is something we touched on in earlier episodes like with Randy Jackson who talked about his journey with Gastric Bypass surgery, or Athena Dixon who talked about shrinking to make herself appear smaller. But our society's diet culture, this obsession with thinness and the resulting eating disorders and body dysmorphia isn’t something we’ve ever really explored - until now.
Today’s guest, Kerri Robertson calls herself the anti-diet culture health coach. Kerri is a Certified Wellness Practitioner and her true passion is to empower the confidence of women and help fulfill their desire to transform into healthier versions of themselves.

Robert Ri’chard Is The Only One Who Loves Your Potential More Than You Do
Can you picture being on the quest for the perfect woman, a woman at your level who loves and understands her own potential? Now can you picture being a kid, too young still to get your driver’s license but already knowing what you want in your mate?
Robert Ri’chard, Emmy award-winning actor/producer, chef, and spokesperson was cared for and prepared for life by his grandfather and father. Men, who taught him that romance isn’t all about looks, that you must also connect with women on a cerebral level.
But what would you do if the only women you connected with that way were the mothers of the women you’d fallen for? Would you continue to court beautiful women and seek out their mothers for those meaningful conversations? Or would you decide to look for that one woman who was the whole package?

RE-RLEASE: SUNDAY EDITION: Patti Linsky Is The Only Cantor In Rehab
Season seven was our most downloaded season EVER! Thank you all so much for listening and sharing. Please enjoy this fan-favorite from season six, while Laura and Scott continue to record brand-new episodes for season eight of The Only One In The Room.
To mark the occasion of our one-year anniversary this past April, we asked YOU, our listeners, to submit your fabulous Only One stories with the objective of having that winner come on the show and share their story. We thought we might get four or five submissions, and had no idea how many of you would submit your stories for consideration. Can I just say that we were completely blown away by the response?! So blown away in fact, that we’ve decided to make this the start of a new series for us, called The Only One In The Room, Sunday Edition. But today, we are over the moon to bring you our winner! The story that took our collective breath away. As soon as Scott and I read Patti’s story we looked at each other, because there was no doubt that author, performer, public speaker and Cantor, Patti Linsky was our contest winner.

RE-RELEASE: Geoffrey Owens Is The Only Celebrity Who Was Job-Shamed For Working At Trader Joes
During our season break, we wanted to share with you one of the more inspirational interviews from season four. We love this episode where actor/director, Geoffrey Owens breaks down his meteoric rise to fame as an actor on The Cosby Show, and his subsequent decision to work at Trader Joe's to support his family. This is one fan-favorite you will listen to over and over again.
Picture being an unknown actor in New York City and then a chance encounter between your mother and casting agent results in you being selected for a role on the biggest television show in the history of Nielsen ratings. A move which catapults you from being an anonymous member of a theater group to someone who can no longer go to the grocery store without being mobbed.
When Geoffrey Owens, actor, director, producer, was cast on The Cosby Show at age 24, it seemed to the the world that he would live the rest of his life in the luxurious celebrity style that we all knew and coveted.
But what if one day, after the fame and money ran low, you had to take a day job, one that would help pay the bills and allow you to continue to pursue the craft you really loved: Theater. Would you bag groceries at Trader Joes, and risk being job shamed? Or would you let debt pile up and let go of the theater life you loved so much, wishing you could go back to being anonymous again?

SUNDAY EDITION: Kara Goldin Is The Only One Who Was Undaunted
When I was pregnant with my now 22-year-old son, my OBGYN insisted that I start drinking water after I confessed to him that I subsisted almost entirely on a diet of candy and soda. I left his office feeling sentenced that day, thinking that I could never possibly drink ONLY water for the remaining months of my pregnancy, as it had no flavor. Perhaps if Hint Water had existed then, I might have had an easier time.
We are absolutely thrilled to have with us, Founder and CEO of Hint, Inc., Kara Goldin. Hint inc is known for its award-winning Hint® water, the leading unsweetened flavored water, and the author of Undaunted. She is an active speaker & writer and hosts the podcast The Kara Goldin Show where she interviews founders, entrepreneurs, and other disruptors across various industries.

What if your white mother couldn’t raise you and your black father, who adored you, was in and out of prison for most of your life, leaving you to child services in Minnesota where you were one of the few mixed race children entrusted to their foster care system?
Tracy McMillian, Best selling author, screenwriter, relationship thought-leader and influencer, was raised by a foster family with solid Minnesotan values, getting a paper route in the dead of winter and visiting with her biological father whenever she could.
But what would you do if after growing up, you had a chance to forgive your circumstances, including the mother and father who’d abandoned you? Would you put your past feelings aside, deciding to believe that they did the best they could? Or would you leave your past behind and move forward with the amazing life you’d built — for yourself?

William Fitzsimmons Is The Only One Celebrating The Culture Of His Black Daughter Episode 70
What if, while looking to adopt, two babies stole your heart, one white and one Black. And when you looked at them, you just knew that they were both your daughters.
William Fitzsimmons, singer, songwriter and producer, adopted his two daughters with his now ex-wife, knowing that as a White man, it would be important to learn to take care of his Black daughter’s hair and educate himself about her African-American culture.
But what would you do, if a cultural reckoning swept across America and put a harsh spotlight on the racial differences in your family? Would you try to stay low until things settled down? Or would you celebrate your daughter’s heritage for all the world to see?

SUNDAY EDITION: Robyn Crawford Is The Only One Standing Up To Amazon
Romance novels are big business. According to the Romance Writers of America, the romance fiction industry is worth $1.08 billion dollars a year, which makes it about a third larger than the inspirational book industry, and about the size of the mystery novel genre and science fiction/fantasy genre markets combined. Look up the top selling romance novel authors and you’ll find a long list of mostly white women. Pick up a romance novel at the airport or your local book store and you’ll most likely find a young, white, cis-hetero, blond haired, blue-eyed heroine. Things are changing though, thanks in part to our guest, Robyn Crawford.
Robyn launched Eden Books in March 2019 after one of her favorite authors had her book banned from Amazon for content. Robyn soon discovered that other books that were being banned for content were often by people of color or queer people.

The NOW Normal: Nickolas Wildstar Is The Only Black Libertarian Republican Running For Governor In 2022
“The historical pattern of government programs that have failed the American people and Black communities in particular. We need to be our own strength, and we can’t just rely on the government to save us. But, if they really do want to help, they can do one simple thing- get out of the way.” Nicholas Wildstar
Nickolas Wildstar is one of the first major candidates to formally announce a gubernatorial campaign for California 2022. Libertarian activist Wildstar was a candidate for Fresno Mayor in 2020 and California governor in 2018, where he received nearly 12,000 votes in the historically crowded race. His activism and platform has since resonated with the wider Republican voter base in the state as many citizens have become increasingly frustrated with the current Democrat majority leadership

Lisa Jakub Is The Only One Who Embraced Her Weird Episode 69
What if you were a child actor with more than forty film and television credits to your name and had starred alongside A-list celebrities, such as Will Smith and the late, great, Robin Williams?
Lisa Jakub, author, therapeutically focused yoga teacher and mental wellness educator, left Hollywood for Virginia when she was twenty-two, hoping that it would be the panacea for the awkwardness and insecurities she’d been dealing with since her acting career started at age four.
But what would you do if your insecurities moved with you to your new home and you were still finding it hard to leave the house? Would you look for ways to correct the awkwardness that had plagued you for most of your life? Or would you ask for guidance and choose a course that would help you embrace your weird?
