On The Shelf
Started as a forum for discussion about YA books during the pandemic, On The Shelf is now about all types of books and talking to all types of authors. Each week host Honora Quinn virtually sits down with your new favorite author from self-published to the NYTs bestselling to ask the important questions, like what type of plate they are.

Books by Muslim Authors
World Hijab Day recently passed, and it inspired us as a jumping-off point to do a general episode about books by Muslim authors. We have decided to refrain from any "discussions" when talking about books about or by authors of identities that we don't share out of the desire to not put words in the mouths of people who have the lived experience that we don't. Instead, we have linked lots of supplemental reading below! We hope you enjoy!

MLK Day Book Lists and Conversation
We discuss the important books that are on our list, and what we’ve already read. Note: we have a conversation about both the continued importance of books about injustice and the way that authors of color can be pressured to feel obligated to write about race by a majority white publishing industry in a way that white authors are not. It was pointed out to several of us pod members that the way that we initially portrayed this idea was not placing enough importance on the continued necessity for books about racial injustice. We want to explain this ahead of time and also apologize. And upon looking back, I can also see how some of the conversation was said in an ambiguous way that did not make clear the true intention of the article that we were referencing on this, and minimized the absolute necessity for stories about racism. This podcast tries to cover a lot of different topics and our goal is to remember at all times that a lot of us are talking about subjects that we have not personally experienced. If you the listener ever feel that there is something insensitive, or misinformed in the episode, or that we are not doing a good job at that goal, please reach out to us in the comments. And here is the article that was mentioned: it does a much better job explaining an idea that we did not give voice to in the best way: https://gal-dem.com/anti-racism-genre-black-lives-matter-race-literature/ :
*and to clear up some of the ambiguity: when we talk about the oversaturation of YA lit: we are saying that it is oversaturated with books by white authors.
