Ep 139: Is My 8% Return Enough?

Ep 139: Is My 8% Return Enough?

Quick Fire Finance of the day: "We’re a couple nearing our 70s, have a mortgage-free house and most of our savings in our own independent KiwiSaver accounts. The thing is both accounts are with the same bank. I say this is an “eggs in one basket” scenario and one of us should change. My husband (and the bank’s financial adviser) says it’s all diversified anyway and we don’t need to. What do you think? It might help settle this running topic between us. We’re aged 64 (retired) and 67 (still working). We’d like to maximize our KiwiSaver returns over the next five years. Despite visiting our provider’s website and sorted.org.nz, I am a little confused as to which numbers to use in my decision making. Our current PRRs (personal rates of return) are 8.16 per cent (in AMP’s Conservative fund) and 8.5 per cent (half in the Conservative fund and half in the Moderate fund). They are for the year ending December 6 2019. AMP says the PRR “calculates your investment percentage return based on the opening balance, the cash flows (eg contributions, withdrawals etc) in the account and the closing balance for the period. The personal rate of return is before tax and net of fees.” Online, the KiwiSaver Fund Finder on sorted.org.nz tells me that the Conservative Fund return for the year ending September 2019 is 5.19 per cent, and for the Moderate Fund it’s 5.34 per cent. So my question is, should we change providers based on Sorted’s relatively low figure for our current provider, or should we consider our PRR as being reasonably good?" Ep 137: Finding Your Purpose With Kate Ross

Ep 137: Finding Your Purpose With Kate Ross

Kate Ross - "An accomplished entrepreneur and innovator, I have achieved 20 years of successful leadership in the recruitment and talent management sector. I founded Kinetic in 1997, and was able to rapidly grow it into a thriving national business due to the provision of superior services to both clients and candidates. Kinetic has offices in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch, and has been recognised with several ‘excellence in recruitment’ awards. Adept at innovating to meet market opportunities, I founded Swivel Careers in 2009 (originally called Whr24U) having recognised that student candidates at Kinetic were often lacking in career direction. I founded Wise Ones in 2017 in response to the under-utilisation of the growing number of older workers; Wise Ones is now enabling their experience and talent to be matched into suitable roles. Commercial success has been facilitated by developing high-performing teams within these businesses. I lead by example and live the core values of honesty, loyalty, directness, ethical practice and hard work. I am motivated by making a difference, and driven by the belief that everyone has the talent to take their place in the workforce, and in doing so, support their personal development as well as positively impact their families and communities. Described as an inspiring leader, blending ambition, resilience and compassion, I am particularly proud to have supported numerous women in their roles and careers. Having chaired the Friends Committee of King’s School, I subsequently served as a King’s School Board Member for five years until 2016. I am interested in governance opportunities and wish to bring my skills and strategic thinking to directorships in the private sector."  Book a Free appointment with Ryan   If you're wanting your question answered on the podcast email me at [email protected], send a voice message below or capitalise on our free online tools and advice:  Get A Free Book and Subscription To Ryan's Weekly Newsletter                             Find Ryan On Social Media                             Have Your Podcast and Audiobook Edited by NZ Audio Editors. Why Investing In NZ Is A Mistake

Why Investing In NZ Is A Mistake

Could nationalism affect your financial future? It’s very natural for people to gravitate towards what they know instead venturing into the big wide world of the unknown.  Choosing to put all their money into the country they love.  New Zealand, as good as it is, will never provide the diversity you need to live the life you want on it's own.  You need to spread the risk internationally.   Don’t believe me? Crypto Bubble About To Burst?

Crypto Bubble About To Burst?

Cryptocurrency and blockchain could very well be one of the most important inventions of our generation. The streamline efficient way of which it processes transactions is second to none. The transparency, smart contract capability, and platform is akin to the invention of the internet. This however isn’t telling the full story. From 2000 to 2003, every company with a dot com on the end of it was picked to ‘go to the moon.’ Prices skyrocketed, companies with no business even being open were flourishing and everyone felt they were ‘picking the next internet winner.’ The technology wasn’t in question, but the companies were. In this case the companies are now called ‘crypto.’ The technology is revolutionary but will crypto currency be the next Amazon or will there be another use for the innovative technology. This is what we do not know and if the 6.4 trillion dollars people lost during 2000-2003 tells us anything it’s that speculative investment decisions tend to hurt more than they help.  Book a Free appointment with Ryan   If you're wanting your question answered on the podcast email me at [email protected], send a voice message below or capitalise on our free online tools and advice:  Get A Free Book and Subscription To Ryan's Weekly Newsletter                             Find Ryan On Social Media                             Have Your Podcast and Audiobook Edited by NZ Audio Editors. Is It Too Late For Property?

Is It Too Late For Property?

Quick Fire Finance Of The Day: "I am 48 and having recently divorced, I’m starting over. My husband and I owned no property together, so there were no assets to divide. I’m now starting from basically nothing and contemplating how to build a financial future. To that end, I am on my way to saving $50,000 within the next two years. I am also in KiwiSaver and have minimal personal debt. Should I use my savings plus my KiwiSaver (which I believe I can do as I’m starting over on my own) as a deposit on a house? Or is it better to forget that idea (I live in Auckland) and keep the money in KiwiSaver, and use the savings to grow a bit of wealth some other way? I’m aware that if I use my KiwiSaver (currently sitting at about $50,000) it’ll go back to zero and I’ll have to build it up again, which might not be smart at my age. On the other hand I am in stable, well-paid employment and I plan to keep working as long as I can — at least another 20 years. The idea of owning my own small house or apartment has a lot of appeal, but would it be the most sensible use of my hard-earned savings?" Smartphone Business With CEO Ben Marris

Smartphone Business With CEO Ben Marris

If I said you should run your business like a smartphone what would be your first thought? Do I mean you should scroll mindlessly on your screen, stuff your face with potato chips and question why you're still awake at 2am? No, the idea of the smartphone business model stems from the concept of apps or in other words, a collection of connections working cohesively for a common goal. A network of businesses and individuals that give you the freedom to focus on everything you're good at while outsourcing the rest. A concept inspired by our guest Ben Marris and his organisation NZ Leaders. Is Rental Property Still A Good Idea?

Is Rental Property Still A Good Idea?

Quick Fire Finance Question Of The Day: "My husband and I are in our early 50s. Both our children have moved out so we’ve started thinking about planning for our future as we don’t want to be a burden to them. My mother recently passed away and left us an inheritance. We still have a mortgage of about $100,000 and we inherited $400,000. My parents have always said that we should get a rental property when we have the money but I’m worried about the new regulations coming through. I’m wondering if you could go through the pros of cons of this and talk about the regulations that might make it challenging?" Tax Efficient Investments

Tax Efficient Investments

Quick Fire Finance Of The Day: "Recent articles in the Herald advise taxpayers to ensure that they use their correct PIR rates for their investment funds such as KiwiSaver. None of the articles address the situation though where investment funds are held in the name of joint account holders with differing PIR rates. It appears that the IRD recognise that most systems only allow for the inclusion of one PIR rate for a portfolio. In my case my wife and I are joint account holders of managed funds. My PIR rate is 28 per cent while hers is 17.5 per cent. Bearing in mind that the IRD do not provide refunds for taxpayers whose PIR rate is too high (which is an inequitable situation in itself), it is only natural that I would choose 17.5 per cent as the PIR rate for our managed funds. This means that I will need to advise in my own tax return that 50 per cent of the value of taxable returns achieved by the managed funds have been undertaxed, requiring me to pay a lump sum on assessment, with possible late payment interest. Do you agree that taxpayers should be made aware of this shortcoming and not feel pressured to increase their PIR rates on their investments unnecessarily?" Building Resilience With Dr Sven Hansen

Building Resilience With Dr Sven Hansen

Dr Sven Hansen is the founder of The Resilience Institute. From a medical family, Sven travelled widely and completed two years in special forces before completing medicine.  His passion for sport and flow took him into sports medicine where he discovered the power of deliberate, scientific training to secure both individual and team success. After an MBA in 1993, he asked how one could translate and take these ideas to a wider population. Business was the ideal partner. Not only could one reach large numbers of people through one buying centre, but we could also help businesses reduce risks and improve business performance. This set the scene to build an evidence-based, integral and practical solution to sustainable performance in business and life. Finding Your Purpose

Finding Your Purpose

Finding your why in life is one of the most challenging yet valuable things you can do or as Viktor E. Frankl would say: "A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the "why" for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any "how".” There are going to be moments in your life where you really struggle and if you don't have reason a to suffer you'll fall off the edge. So in this episode I share with you my tips for finding your 'why.' Quick Fire Finance - Why You Should Never Retire

Quick Fire question of the day: "I’m 56 years old and have worked in management for most of my life. I have some bad days but for the most part I like what I do. Now as I approach retirement, I’m starting to think I won’t have enough money to fund it and if I did what would I even do? I’m married, our kids are all grown up and I don’t really have any hobbies. What do your clients usually do? I know I’m not alone because you called it ‘retreading’ not ‘retiring.’ Do you have process for helping people work out what they’ll do? Quick Fire Finance - The Problem With Shares

Quick Fire Finance - The Problem With Shares

Quick Fire Finance of the Day:  "We are a couple in our late 70s and realize that our remaining years on this planet are becoming limited. We live in a freehold home. We agree with your advice(Mary Holm) in The Herald recently to “stick with share-market ups and downs.” However, we consider that this strategy may be more applicable to younger and/or wealthy investors. We have a “mixed” international share portfolio administered by a financial adviser. Current value is reduced to $260,000 following a recent market meltdown. We have experienced a roller coaster “ride” over many years with growth in some years, being discounted by loss in other years. Given our age and limited resources, we would be grateful if you could advise if we should: · Hang in and persevere until we are 80 or a longer time period, or · Instruct our adviser to sell down the portfolio and thereafter invest the capital in a less risky and more secure option." Quick Fire Finance - Who Is NZ's Best Fund Manager?

Quick Fire Finance - Who Is NZ's Best Fund Manager?

Quick Fire Finance of the day: "How do you compare various unit funds? I am retired and have several hundred thousand dollars which I’m considering placing in a conservative or balanced unit fund of the type run by most of the major brokers or banks. I have asked for performance data from each of the funds, but it’s not easy to compare who is the best. Have you got any suggestions or the name of a website that does this comparison? Also, the purchase price of the units varies, and I’m not sure whether the date at which you buy the units is sensitive to the market (like buying shares at the top of the market)?" Toolkit Of Deception

Toolkit Of Deception

You don't have to go very far to hear the countless horror stories of people being swindled out of their life savings. A fast talking con artist promising wealth and riches for all those foolish enough to take the chance. At least that's what we like to tell ourselves. The reality is no matter how much we like to believe we're free thinkers that, under the right circumstances and persuasion tactics, someone could very well have us doing things we never thought we would.  Which is why in this episode I want to flip the script and share with you how a person like me might try to influence a person like you.   If you're wanting your question answered on the podcast email me at [email protected], send a voice message below or capitalise on our free online tools and advice: Find Out How We Can Help You                   Get A Free Book and Subscription To Ryan's Weekly Newsletter                   Find Ryan On Social Media                   Have Your Podcast and Audiobook Edited by NZ Audio Editors. "I’m self employed and make regular contributions to my KiwiSaver. Next Generation Real Estate With Nathan Canton

Next Generation Real Estate With Nathan Canton

I’ve always wondered what’s the point of getting a real estate agent in when you can just do it yourself? A common fallacy we all fall into as NZers is this concept of ‘Do It Youself.’ Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely people that are more than capable of doing it all themselves, but they’re the exception not the rule. So, I thought why not invite one of the top agents from Barfoot and Thompson, Nathan Canton, to share exactly why you may be making a mistake. NZ's No. 1 Speaker Coach Michael Philpot

NZ's No. 1 Speaker Coach Michael Philpot

Are you looking to develop your skills as a leader? There is probably no business leadership skill more important than the ability to speak to an audience of any size. But without speaker training, it’s easy to get caught up in your own insecurities and fears and loose control of yourself, your words and your movements. You can’t hide this from an audience, all they see is someone who lacks confidence and competence ultimately leading to a lack of trust. If people can’t trust you, they won’t want to do business with you, it’s that simple. Unfortunately many leaders and executives aren’t great communicators, and it’s affecting their ability to lead. They fumble their way through meetings and presentations, and it leaves their team confused and uninspired. Michael Phillpot will help you to remove the clutter that gets in the way of a concise and coherent message, to ensure any audience large or small will easily understand and engage with you and your brand.  Also, if you're wanting your question answered on the podcast email me at [email protected], send a voice message below or capitalise on our free online tools and advice: Find Out How We Can Help You           Get A Free Book and Subscription To Ryan's Weekly Newsletter           Find Ryan On Social Media           Have Your Podcast and Audiobook Edited by NZ Audio Editors.
