The short answer is nothing. When the hysteria bus takes over you’ll start developing this compelling urge to do something. Change your growth fund to a conservative or jump ship to another company not as badly impacted. Though it may have given you a sudden feeling of relief your finances won’t be thanking you. In my line of work we call this crystallising your loss. Lets say you made an amazing 20% return from 2019 to 2020 then the market drops by 20% so you freak out and sell your assets to change the fund. What is your return now?   Despite what the latest journalist funded economist wants you to believe, it is nearly impossible to time the market, so in times like this, what matters isn’t the fluctuations in price, but instead, your risk tolerance, your time horizon for needing the money and making sure you don’t have all your eggs in one basket. As you read this, the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZ Super) is currently costing the NZ Government close to $38 million a day, with the cost likely to increase to $117 million in the next twenty years. Teenagers from the outside appear to be zombie like creatures that navigate somewhere between the words whatever, I can’t be bothered or inaudible grunting. It’s very easy to disengage from their plight. Often the disengaged nature of their adolescence is tied with the labels of laziness or a lack of discipline. Though, as laid out in Professor Walker’s book why we sleep, it’s much closer to a harrowing case of chronic sleep deprivation where only a 11% of teenagers are actually getting the sleep they need. To which you may respond; well it’s because they stay up too bloody late. Sure smart phones do emit a light so strong that it’d even wake Hades from his slumber and they are spending too much time online, though, this lack of sleep isn’t necessarily a reflection of bad behaviour but instead a genetic problem as research suggests the ideal time for teenagers to wake is between 9am-10am with comprehension being the best between 10-11am. So it begs to question, what else might we be doing wrong? Just because we have always done something doesn’t necessarily make it the best or as Henry Ford, Founder of Ford Motor Company, would say: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” And that’s what this week’s podcast is about. The inspiration for this week’s episode stems from a recent discussion with someone I met at a bar who started a business. The business took off, winning award after award, and even got to the initial stages of becoming a franchise. My friend worked incredibly hard to get it up and running but, this took a toll on his energy levels and his marriage started to suffer. When you dedicate all your time to pursuing a goal it's easy to let other things fall through the cracks. In this case, my friend’s partner filed for divorce and his business soon crumbled to the extent that he now owes hundreds of thousands of dollars. The creditors came after anything they could get their hands on, and if his spouse wasn't kind hearted it could have been much worse. He is now at an age where the loss will never be recovered, so his existence is doomed to being forever funded by the government. So now the question becomes: what steps could have been taken to prevent this scenario?
