Atha is the designer behind Fancy Lad Quilt Co. and her dog Kip is the "mascot". He is even featured in her logo. Atha loves to design and make pop culture quilts. She likes animated shows (Bob's Burgers, King of the Hill, Invincible, One Punch Man, Archer, etc), so she tends towards projects featuring those as a way to express her love for the characters. Meet Erin Nichole of Mija Handmade! - Ep. 125

Meet Erin Nichole of Mija Handmade! - Ep. 125

Erin Nichole Whinnery is the designer and maker behind Mija Handmade. Erin grew up, as she says, under her mother's sewing table. In 2011, she made a quilt for her niece, then her sewing sat on the backburner. Then, like a lot of us, she wanted something creative to do during the 2020 lockdown. She picked up some fabric and zippers and started making striped zippered pouches. When the novelty of pouches wore off, she dove into sewing in other ways. Stockings, home decor, quilts, improv... and along came the Sharrow Quilt. The first design of many to come from Mija Handmade. As you'll see in her patterns, Erin loves to incorporate bold lines with interesting geometry and movement. This is also demonstrated in her current Block of the Month: Learning Curves 2024. Erin and Amanda chatted about the beauty and inspiration that comes from what we see, and in the technical side of writing patterns. Erin views it as its own art, and Amanda agrees. Erin Nichole just released her latest pattern, Grandma Core, and is available now! You can also purchase acrylic templates to help get crisp even curves. Go check out Erin's patterns while you listen! Find Erin Nichole here!  Website: https://mijahandmade.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mija.handmade/ This episode is sponsored by the lovely Cozy Earth. Meet Lisa of Lovering Quilt Co.! - Ep. 124

Lisa is the owner and head maker of Lovering Quilt Co. Lisa is a graduate of Buffalo State with a bachelor's in Fashion Textile Technology and has a passion for fabrics. When she picked up quilting in 2015, her adoration for quilting and buying fabrics (which we all know are two different hobbies) led her to a daydream of owning her own little online fabric shop. She chats about her transition from the corporate world into being a self-employed and the challenge of staying on top of your business as a solopreneur. They also dive into the changes in priorities as a result of the 2020 lockdowns and what that means for small businesses. Meet Melissa de Leon Mason! - Ep. 121

Meet Melissa de Leon Mason! - Ep. 121

Melissa de Leon Mason had a pretty unique introduction to sewing and quilting. While living in Cairo, Egypt early in her marriage, she stumbled upon the textile Souq - a marketplace full of wonderful fabrics in bright colors and bold patterns. That was all it took for her to dive into learning how to sew. A few years of trying to figure it all out, Melissa is now designing foundation paper piecing patterns, teaching classes and workshops and having her quilts hung in national quilt shows such as QuiltCon and the National Quilt Museum. She is no longer looking for towels or discarded materials to stuff into her quilts to make them fluffy. She is in the big leagues! And like many of us, Melissa has a day job. She recently graduated and is a licensed practicing counselor. This plays a factor in her love of teaching. She loves to work with people and support them in their growth. She shares that teaching is fulfilling because she gets to see people walk away with a new skill that they can use to grow their quilting knowledge library. She also offers equity pricing on her classes and workshops. Melissa also recently launched her FPP Design course! The class is online and on-demand. However, sign ups are limited per enrollment period so Melissa can be present and available for her students. So keep an eye out for the next session to open! If you haven't seen Melissa's work, then pop over to her website or Instagram and check it out while you listen! Find Melissa here! Website: https://www.quiltallthethings.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/quiltallthethings_/ Want to see more? Meet Stephanie of Hillside Stitches! - Ep. 120

Meet Stephanie of Hillside Stitches! - Ep. 120

Stephanie is the owner of Hillside Stitches. She fell into quilting while pregnant and on bed rest. She tediously cut fabric squares with scissors while in bed, but once her baby was born, she quickly upgraded to a rotary cutter. Since then, she hasn't looked back. As she worked on her skills, she soon found herself self-drafting a pattern to achieve the scrappy pumpkin quilt of her dreams. After many requests for the pattern, Stephanie decided to write it up and sell it. So six-ish years ago, Hillside Stitches was born. Since then, she has written 38 patterns. Her latest pattern, Ex, came about as a forgotten project that would have been a gift for her son's swim teacher/life guard. After her kiddo spied the pattern on her computer and declared it needed to be made for his teacher this year, she finished it up and now we get to have it! Stephanie will be hosting a 4-week Sew-Along for the Ex pattern starting in early October, so head to her Instagram or her website to sign up! Meet Taiga Bentley of House of Taiga! - Ep. 119

Taiga Bentley is the curator behind the whimsical color-gradient quilts and quilted jackets at House of Taiga. Since she was a young girl, Taiga has always felt drawn to rainbows, color gradients and art. As the owner of Olga Korper Gallery (started by her grandmother), she always has her eye on art. During the lockdown of 2020, Taiga was enamored by the quilt her friend was making, and a whole new world of craft was opened to her. As she browsed the internet for gorgeous fabrics, she knew there was no going back. She immediately purchased herself a sewing machine and began to learn to sew. Her rainbow gradient puff quilt was her first project, and is still a staple in the entertainment of her daughters as an "I Spy" game. Several quilts later, Taiga added quilted color-gradient jackets to her repertoire. Wearable quilts?! Why not! The same fabrics that are fun and eye-catching for children also make beautiful jackets for children and adults alike. Each one unique and tailored to the life of the client. Taiga lives for color and loves to share her passion with the masses. Not only can her quilts and jackets be purchased, but she also curates color-gradient bundles you can buy so you can make your own gorgeous color-gradient quilt! After training at the prestigious, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Rachel acted for a while but then through a mutual friend found out about a TV presenting gig, and that was that! Off she went in search of a new career. After a successful run of broadcast television jobs and hosting live events, her last TV presenting gig was for a craft channel working with lots of different artists selling their products. After hearing amazing stories from classmates and teachers about how they had overcome blocks in their life using creativity, it was only a matter of time before Rachel started the podcast ‘Breaking the Blocks. The first episode was launched in February 2024 and it continues to grow at a fast pace! Rachel is successfully building a fantastic community of like-minded creative souls who regularly come together to share their passion with each other, and as she says, ‘the door is always open’ so go check out CraftyMonkies and the podcast if you feel so inclined! "We have two lives, the second begins when we realize we only have one." -- Confucius Find Rachel here! CraftyMonkies - https://www.craftymonkies.com/ Breaking the Blocks - https://www.breakingtheblocks.com/ This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth. Meet Todd "The Bear Quilter"! - Ep. 117

Meet Todd "The Bear Quilter"! - Ep. 117

Todd Leavitt, a Vermont transplant to North Carolina, has been on the quilt scene for quite some time now. But it hasn't always been his obvious passion. Todd and his brothers were all taught to sew at young ages by their mother. There was also some sewing during school for a home sciences class. Todd enjoyed sewing, but felt societal pressure to leave it behind and focus on his career. There weren't a lot of openly gay men in the sewing scene. All that changed when Todd experienced a heart-attack at 40. That was the wakeup call he needed to find more balance and start doing more of what he loved. That's where quilting entered his life. Now, he's a pattern designer, Craft-Thirster, Textile Daddy and content creator. The Bear Quilter has a new pattern to be released in October, and fabric kits and notions will be available on his website! Please enjoy this episode and go find Todd if you haven't already! Find The Bear Quilter here!Website: thebearquilter.com for merch and more. Instagram/Threads: www.instagram.com/thebearquilter  @Thebearquilter   This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth. Meet Meagan Guité, Ruby Star Society Project Coordinator! - Ep. 115

Meet Meagan Guité, Ruby Star Society Project Coordinator! - Ep. 115

Meagan Guité is a Project Coordinator for Ruby Star Society who loves color, anything vintage and pets. Meagan's mom, Sarah, taught her how to quilt over 15 years ago when she opened a quilt shop. Meagan worked for her mom, and learned to quilt so she could answer questions for customers. Meagan's joy of making things with fabric comes from Sarah, and is something Meagan cherishes even more now. After Sarah passed away in 2021, Meagan found a new energy to create and sew. She quilted through the pain of losing her mother as a way to keep her close. Since then, Meagan quit her corporate job, and in a leap-of-faith moment, she applied for the job posted by Ruby Star Society looking for a project coordinator/social media/marketing expert. She got the job (that she splits with Audrey Savage) and now gets to live in the creative space of quilting and sewing. As the Project Coordinator, Meagan organizes the projects that will be mocked up in new fabric lines being released. She also helps write and create project plans and patterns. The new 10 Years of Magic pattern is one of Meagan's designs. Meagan is clearly an asset to Ruby Star Society and the world of quilting. Her ideas and excitement for design are so inspiring! Meet Karlee Porter! - Ep. 100

Welcome to the 100th Episode of Not Your Granny's Quilt Show!Karlee Porter is a professional quilter who came to the industry in a non-traditional way. Karlee has always been artistic and loved sharing her art with her friends and classmates all through school. To earn extra money, Karlee would sell her designs and homemade caramels. When she was out of high school, newly married, and needing a job, she worked for HandiQuilter as a builder of subcomponents for the longarm machines. This is how Karlee was introduced to quilting. When she realized she could translate her drawings and art style onto fabric, she practiced for hours at work and at home to hone her skills. In 2014, Karlee wrote and self-published her book "Graffiti Quilting: A Simple Guide to Complex Designs". This year is the 10th anniversary of the first edition of her book. However, Karlee has tripled the size of the first book and the next Graffiti Quilting Class participants will receive the new version of the book in their Welcome Kit! Sign up for the class on her website and use code NYGQS25 to get a $25 discount on your tuition! Meet Janice Reimer of Prairie & Ocean! - Ep. 99

Janice Reimer is a Structural Biologist by day and a Quilter by night...and weekends. After resisting becoming a quilter for much of her life, Janice was introduced to EPP and whole-cloth hand quilting. The rest, as they say, is history. Janice was born and raised in the Canadian prairies, and after working in San Diego for three years, she returned to Canada. Janice's analytical mind helps her create modern-traditionalist quilt patterns that have eye-catching design and flow. Janice's most recent pattern, "Saros", plays with the asymmetry of the cycle of eclipses. Its modern design is a visual delight, and appeals to the precision-focused quilter. Since recording this episode, Janice became a QuiltCon ribbon winner with her quilt titled "Anechoic". Meet Amber Elliot of Alderwood Studio! - Ep. 96

Meet Amber Elliot of Alderwood Studio! - Ep. 96

Amber Elliot is the artist/pattern designer/quilter/educator behind Alderwood Studio. She has been sewing all her life, and has always loved bringing various fabrics together to give them new life. As a child, she used her grandmother's old clothes to create new fashion for her mom to wear. Then as a teen, Amber decided that she was going to make a quilt, so she did. Since then, Amber has quilted on and off, but when she started doing it more seriously, she realized that the design and the pattern layout was her favorite part. Up to that point, Amber had never used someone else's pattern. But, realizing that she wanted to try writing her patterns, she started purchasing patterns so she could learn how it was done. As Amber was building her pattern-writing skills, she had the idea for a subscription box that would bring fun projects right to your door (or inbox). In addition to the Modern Makes box, Amber felt compelled to create a pattern-writing course for budding designers. She decided to help other people do what she struggled to do on her own. If you know anyone who has taken her course, then you know that her platform builds strong partnerships in the quilting community. Amber believes in the old adage - "a rising tide lifts all boats". And as she pursues her dreams, Amber is now one of Riley Blake's new fabric designers! Her fabric line comes out this Fall, so call your local quilt shops to request it!Amber's designs are beautiful and classically modern. They hold the title of "modern heirloom" and can be found in her shop online, in her book "Modern Heirloom Quilting" and at local quilt shops near you! Meet Tara Evans of Taralee Quiltery! - Ep. 95

Tara Evans is the owner/artist/designer behind Taralee Quiltery. As a  student, Tara thrived in math, science and the arts. Her main focus was to take as many classes in the arts as she could. Amanda and Tara attended rival high schools in Boise, but the two ended up in their respective schools' choir programs. Painting was Tara's original outlet, which ultimately led her to study Fine Art in college. Before graduating, she got married and soon after becoming a mother, she started sewing for them. In 2018 Tara designed and made her first quilt pattern and the rest is history! Taralee Quiltery was born from wanting to share her love of art  with the world and give other people access to her creative process by purchasing her patterns to make their own art. Tara sells her patterns both printed and PDF, as well as curated bundles. If you haven't seen her Ruby Star Starry bundles that are based on popular movies, you should check them out! Tara's style has high visual impact. Her quilts are designed to be show stoppers. Meet Christina Miller of Fabric Pop! - Ep. 87

Meet Christina Miller of Fabric Pop! - Ep. 87

Christina Miller is the owner and happy face behind Fabric Pop - an online quilt shop for modern quilters. As a lifelong crafter, Christina has always loved fabric. Even in her first business endeavor - making and selling bags - Christina found the most joy in talking to her customers and other vendors about the fabric. When the business of bags had run its course, Christina took time to sew projects just for herself, using the fabrics she loved most. This inspired her to move into her next phase - starting a quilt shop! Christina's passion for fun, fussy-cuttable fabrics is evident in the inventory she carries. She and Amanda found that they could go on forever about their love for Ruby Star Society fabrics - which is where it all started anyway. Christina hopes to one day have a brick-and-mortar shop so she can serve her local community while she continues to provide a fun, funky and sometimes silly array of fabrics all across the country.
