The Guild is Ed's brainchild and a physical manifestation of his own life philosophy, to live life as a bold adventure and surround yourself with people to further that goal. Ep 46 - Capitol Controversy with Brute Norse
This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Eirik Storesund, the content creator behind Brute Norse, a blog and podcast dedicated to dispelling the many popular misconceptions about the Viking Age and Norse culture, and bridging the gap between scholarship and public perception. Together they will be discussing the riot in the US capitol last week, and the unfortunate public misconception of certain Norse symbols and cultual elements as a result. We've covered misappropriation of Viking symbols and the unfortunate ties with white supremacy before, and quite honestly we are sad to have to do so again so early in the year. However, given these unfortunate events though we don't really feel we have a choice. Lighter topics next week, we promise.Check out our new Instagram: www.instagram.com/nordicmythologypodcastAnd if you would like what we do, and would to be in the audience for live streams of new episodes to ask questions please consider supporting us on Patreon:www.patreon.com/NordicMythologyPodcastCurrently we are trying to add 100 new Patrons! This week Mathias and Daniel sat down with the amazingly talented Stine Sandnes, whose unique photography and desire to reconnect with her roots gave birth to the hugely popular Instagram Helheimen! Ep 44 - Viking Drinking Games
This week is a bit of a throwback episode. We figured that for our first episode of the New Year we would keep it light. In that spirit Mathias and Daniel will be discussing Viking drinking games, possible PTSD in ancient warriors, and looking back on their favorite episodes and moments of 2020. As a special bonus Mathias also reveals his favorite Christmas movie! We are also in the midst of setting up our Instagram so check that out over at: www.instagram.com/nordicmythologypodcastIf you would like what we do, and would to be in the audience for live streams of new episodes to ask questions please consider supporting us on Patreon:www.patreon.com/NordicMythologyPodcastWe put all the money back into the show to bring you a better product and your support means the world to us. Ep 43 - Who Exactly Is Mathias Nordvig? With Guest Sean Parry
For our final episode of 2020 Daniel and special guest host Sean Parry of Sacred Knot Tattoowill be interviewing our very own Mathias Nordvig! We figured we would go out on a fun low key note to end a year which has been severely lacking on both of those fronts. Topics include: Mathias telling the story of Odin and Thor vs the giant Hrungnir, discussing the origin of Thors lightning powers, and everyones favorite meads to ring in the new year. We did have some technical issues getting Sean to join so he makes his first appearance about 15 minutes in. Ep 42 - Yule Special 2020 with Josh Rood
This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Josh Rood the lead singer of the band Nexion. Together they will be answering all your questions about the celebration of Yule in the Viking era, and also discussing the practice of human and animal sacrifice in various Norse religions and texts. Those may seem like strange bedfellows for topics but trust us, it works. On a lighter note everyone shares stories of their own Yuletide traditions and mishaps; Daniel in particular has one worthy of a saga. It's been quite a year for everyone and we personally have come a long way from our Yule episode last year. This is for instance our second livestreamed episode for members of our Patreon! Ep 41 - Wolves and Dogs In Norse Mythology with Espen Hatleskog
This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Espen Hatleskog otherwise known by his internet moniker: "Pilotviking." Espen does a lot of Viking themed photography and runs successful Instagram and Facebook pages for both himself and his dog Fenris.Topics of discussion will include: The significance of wolves and ravens in Viking Culture, what kinds of dogs did Vikings domesticate, and how Harald Fairhair because the first king of Norway. If you would like to check out Espen's amazing photography you can find pictures of him at:Instagram.com/pilotvikingAnd if you only want pictures of his handsome dog Fenris you can find those at:Instagram.com/fenris_the_vikingdogHow did a dog get so many Instagram followers? Ep 40 - Indo-European Languages with Heilung's Emilie Lorentzen
This week Mathias and Daniel are thrilled to sit down with Emilie Lorentzen to speak about how she joined the band Heilung, nerd out about her background in Indo-European Languages, and her mysterious new music project. Other topics of discussion include: The Danish island of Bornholm , where Emilie hails from, and whose folk music is the inspirations for her next project. The God Tyr, his names history and the mysterious lack of temples and religious sites dedicated to him. And how regional languages and dialects shape our thinking and who we are in the world; yes, even Daniel's. The answers as always will be complicated. That's it for this week! Ep 39 - The History of the Blood Eagle with Luke John Murphy
Maybe this would have made a better Halloween episode, but this week is all about the macabre Viking ritual known as the "Blood Eagle," as made famous in the show Vikings. Luke John Murphy has been researching the historical and practical sides of the ritual and has come on the show to share his findings with Mathias and Daniel.Surprisingly Daniel seems to have an amazing intuitive understanding of the medical science behind cracking open someone's ribcage, to the point that it would be worrying if he wasn't such a nice guy. Luke was an amazing guest so please consider heading over to his website and checking out some of his other academic papers. The one about English hair goddesses sounds particularly fun.You can find that paper and many more at: luke-murphy.comAlso the issues with Mathias's sound are unfortunately ongoing. The problem isn't with actual equipment it's his internet connection. That's what he gets for living deep in the mountains. Anyway we are working on a solution and appreciate your patience. Ep 38 - Assassins Creed Valhalla; Making The Music with Einar Selvik
This weeks guest needs no introduction. It's Einar Selvik the front man of the amazing Wardruna! He's fresh off of working on the music for the upcoming Assassins Creed Valhalla and was kind enough to sit down with Mathias and Daniel to discuss the experience, as well as Wardrunas upcoming album. But that's just the jumping off point. From there the discussion will range into general artistic attitudes and the creative process, his surprise voice over cameo in Assassins Creed, and the positives and negatives of Ubisofts interpretation of the Viking material. The answers will be as complicated as they are entertaining. Also, we have to apologize again for the audio quality Einar had some building going on in the background and we did our best but it is a problem. Frankly we were just excited to have him. Ep 37 - The Oath: A Heathen Poets Journey with Jason Ralls
This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Jason Ralls to talk about his heathen spiritual practice and recent book of poetry The Oath: A Heathen Poets Journey. The Oath chronicles the transpositional journey of the poet as he travels through the planes, meeting with gods, and even going through the underworld. But of course that isn't all we'll be discussing this week. Other topics also include: magic mushrooms and other hallucinogens' and their effect on spiritual practice, the Ättestupa or did grandpa really have to jump off a cliff for the good of the village, and in impromptu positive review of the movie Midsommar. How did we get all of that into one episode? Well, it's complicated. Also we know the audio on this weeks episode is a little spotty. Unfortunately some of our files didn't upload properly so we had to get ones from our backup which just isn't as good. We are looking into a long term fix but in the meantime please bear with us. Ep 36 - Fire and Sword with Jeanette Varberg
This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Jeanette Verberg an archeologist and curator for the National Museum of Denmark where she is responsible for the Bronze and Viking Age; think Indiana Jones but one who only cared about Viking prehistory and didn't destroy the dig site half the time.Together they will be discussing her experiences on archeological expeditions as well as her extensive writing, both academic and historic non-fiction about the Viking Age. Unfortunately unless you read Danish you probably won't get much out of her books as they have not been translated into English. However, if you would like to read her academic papers including her most recent one: Where Have All The Young Girls Gone? which discusses the curious absence of women in Bronze Age Swedish rock carvings, as well as the possibility that perhaps they have actually been there all along... then you should check out her National Museum Page. Personally I would recommend the one on the distribution of Mesopotamian Glass, which is a fascinating topic she talks about in the beginning of the episode. That's it for this week! Ep 35 - Nordic Animism with Rune Rassusen
This week Mathias and Daniel are chatting with Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen who runs a successful Youtube channel and the web page Nordic Animism both of which are well worth checking out! With 2020 drawing to a close (finally) Rune is releasing the 2021 Runic Animist Calendar, a wall calendar which features a selection of amazing artists working off of the theme "rune". It also comes with a manual "The Nordic Animist Year," which functions as an introduction to traditional seasonal animism in Northern Europe. It's a good read although notably a little shorter than Mathias's last book (not that it's a measuring contest or anything!)Also we know the sound is a little off on this weeks episode. Runes audio was not terribly good to begin with so Shan had to give him a little bit of old time radio voice. Think of it as ambiance? Ep 34 - Midgardsblot, Metal and Vikings with Vicky Mikalsen
It's time to unwind, and as we all know there is nothing more relaxing than kicking back with some black metal blasting and just letting all your cares slip away. Why, what were you thinking? This week Mathias and Daniel are both really excited to sit down with one of the principal organizers of the Midgardsblot festival Vicky Mickaleson. Midgardsblot is a metal and folk festival that takes place in Borre Norway. The event centers around the Midgard Viking Center and events include: battle reenactments, a Viking village and market, lectures and panels (featuring the likes of our very own Mathias) and of course Metal. It's an amazing place and we someday hope to do a live podcast there. Together with Vicky, Mathias and Daniel will talk about how the festival began and has grown, as well as what to expect from the opening ceremonies and other events; it's a nice friendly discussion. So pull up a chair, pour yourself a drink, and toast with us to Midgardsblot, where hopefully we can all see one another in 2021! Ep 33 - The Anatomy of Dragons with Jonas Lau Markussen
This week Mathias and Daniel get to seriously nerd out with Joans Lau Markussen author of The Anatomy of Viking Art the book which helped get Daniel started designing his mead horns. Together Jonas and Mathias will cover tons of Viking art history theories from Lindisfarne to the existence of Dragons. It's going to be a good time. We know we've been doing a lot of serious themed episodes recently and we really appreciate people hearing what we have to say. One of the big reasons Mathias and Daniel started this podcast in the first place was to educate people, not just about the myths, but also how these ancient traditions are being carried forward, both the good and the bad. We feel we've done that pretty well with our last batch of episodes, but this next batch is going to be more focused on Viking history and culture and less on contemporary social issues. Frankly we all could use a break, and we thought you all might appreciate one as well. Also this week Mathias gets to try out his new mic setup for the first time thanks to our amazing supporters over at Patreon! Ep 32 - Modern Paganism and Heathens Against Hate with Ethan Stark
This week Mathias and Daniel are really excited to talk with Ethan Stark an administrator of Heathens Against Hate, an organization dedicated to inclusivity in heathenry through the philosophy: "We are our deeds."Together they will be diving into the topics surrounding the difficulties faced by people who practice modern paganism and heathenry; the primary one being groups interested in practicing racism and white supremacy who tarnish the image of this newly emerging religious practice. Learn some of the things you should watch out for if you yourself are interested in checking out Paganism, as well as some of the hard conversations you might have to have as a practicing Heathen, both to educate people or steer people you care about from going down a bad road. It's good stuff, if complicated. Also this is our one year anniversary! It's hard to believe that this all started out with a scholar and a self described, "idiot from Yorkshire." We've come so far, at least in terms of equipment... This has been especially evident in the last month or so since our amazing Patreon supporters have given us the ability to purchase new equipment and help Daniel focus more time on the podcast. This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down from with Collin Dale of Skin and Bone Tattoo to discuss his designs and the success of his Facebook page: Traditional Nordic Tattoos, where he shares images of traditional tattoos from Nordic, Celtic, Pictish, and Sami backgrounds with over 50,000 people, head over and check it out, there's some amazing stuff!Other topics of discussion will cover things like: How to improve your Google skills so you don't keep finding the same 10 Tattoo designs from Etsy. Is it okay to name your child after a God? (spoiler, it's 2020 name your kids whatever you want). And why you should avoid getting a back alley tattoo from some random basket weaver or other artisan at a festival; really, it feels like I shouldn't have to explain that one, but according to Collin it's a real problem so here we are.If you'd prefer an ad free version of the show check out our Patreon, it’s one of the very first tiers, and we really appreciate the help! Ep 28 - The Way of Men With Jack Donovan
This week Daniel and Mathias sat down with Jack Donovan to talk a bit about his thoughts on the role of men in the Viking age. We realize this might not be everyone's cup of tea and for those of you who (deservedly) have some doubts we encourage you to listen to the first 6 minutes or so before drawing your own conclusions.Together they'll discuss what is meant to be a viking man, the answers are surprisingly grounded and center around owning land and their ability to work. We'll also dig (no pun intended) into the topic of Bog Bodies and how the "science" of them being homosexuals is actually Nazi propaganda to justify their ruthless persecution of gays. Also, we know the ads are terrible this week, we are working on getting some transition music and better mics. Here's our Patreon if you'd like to help with that, conveniently one of the first perks is an add free version of the episode. We certainly appreciate any and all help. Ep 27 - The Vikings are Gay! With guest Amy Jefford Franks
We all know that every Viking ever was a barrel chested, big bearded, lady killer (sometimes literally). But is that really the case? How realistic is it to believe that every viking for almost 300 years had a knotty spear shaft only for Freya? This week Mathias and Daniel sit down with Amy Jefford Franks a fellow historian and host of the awesome, "Vikings Are Gay!" podcast. Together they will be discussing topics like: What happens when a group of men are on a boat together for a long time? Why the insult "bottom" in saga literature is more about bucking social norms and less a description of certain recreational activities. And the unfortunate white supremacist influence left in viking scholarship by Nazi's, as well as how to begin addressing it. Ep 26 - Old Norse for Modern Times with Special Guest Arngrimur Vidalin
It's a good old fashioned scholarly debate this week as Arngrimur Vidalin, a fellow Old Norse Literature expert, sits down with Mathias and Daniel to talk about his many exciting translation projects. As it turns out Arngrimur is involved in a lot of really cool stuff right now including: translating Alice in Wonderland into ancient Norse, gathering material for a new book on the monsters of the saga literature and how they shaped ancient race theory, and most immediately Old Norse For Modern Times a book of your favorite modern sayings translated into Old Norse. There should still be a few days if you want to check out the Kickstater and back it, then you too can say awesome stuff like: "Meira mælti Wagner af kappi en viti!" "Wagner has a lot to answer for!"Also find out the name of the best hat shop in Copenhagen. Ep 25 - The Seawolf and The Creation Myths
First things first, we've really got to apologize for the audio quality on this weeks episode. It is well below our standard of quality. The truth is coordinating recording setups in 3 different places is complicated and in this case the audio that was recorded using a new program for us was pretty damaged to begin with; our editor did what he could with it, but when you start from a bad place there's only so far you can come. From all of us at The Norse Mythology Podcast we are truly sorry. We are just three guys doing the best we can with the setups we have and this time things did not go our way, in future we will be upgrading some mics and monitoring our sound more closely to make sure this doesn't happen again. Now that that is out of the way lets talk about this weeks episode. This week Mathias and Daniel were lucky enough to sit down with Andrew Saulf aka The Seawolf. He's a really talented up and coming music artist whose work you can check out at: facebook.com/theseawolfmusicYou might even recognize a familiar voice on his latest track since our very own Mathias donated his vocal talent to the mix! But the gang wont just be discussing, "lofi Viking beats to relax/study to," they'll also be getting into the Norse creation myths, and how Midgard is actually protected by eyebrows. Also, possibly the best excuse in the ancient world, "It wasn't me, the swamp lady did it!"Also check us out on Instagram at: www.instagram.com/nordicmythologypodcastAnd if you like what we do, and would like to be in the audience for live streams of new episodes to ask questions please consider supporting us on Patreon:www.patreon.com/NordicMythologyPodcastIf you would like to join our bi-weekly Q&A Episodes in the new year, or get access to our special Story Time episodes covering the saga literature, then all you have to do is join our Patron. Ep 24 - All About Pagan Music with Faun Lead Singer Oliver S. Tyr
We are really honored this week to be able to talk about ancient music traditions with Oliver S. Tyr lead singer of the band Faun, as well as discuss their new single "Tamlin". Together with Mathias and Daniel he will be discussing the new surge of interest in pagan traditions and music because of the popular show "Vikings", as well as sharing stories of the early days of the band. Some highlights include: Oliver's surprising pre-Faun career, the latest unique instrument he acquired from (of all places) Colorado, and the difficulty of attracting the attention of modern ears using traditional sounds. Ep 23 - The Truth About Runes: Sigurboði Returns!
Sigurboði is back to talk about his new single with Mathias and Daniel, but that's not all. First and foremost he's here to give us the hard truth about the runes! Are they magical? Can you use them as a compass? Did they come straight from Odin or take a roundabout journey through Portugal? The answers may surprise you. Together they also cover some very important other topics like: Why are sheep so sturdy? What do the Norse dwarves actually look like? And most importantly can a peasant take out a knight who has been knocked off a horse? The answers will be as complicated as they are amusing. Also if you have not check out Mathias's new book! Ep 22 - Story Time: How Utgard Loki Makes Thor Seem Small
In this episode we are going old school and telling the story of Utgard Loki. Daniel and Mathias also have a broader discussion of how this myth in particular is the perfect example of Christianity absorbing local mythology to further its own ends. Get ready for some good old fashioned storytelling, as well as some quality discussions from the hosts, about appropriation and religious identity in the medieval period. The answers, as always, will be complicated. Also a huge thank you to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode. In HBO's show "Vikings," Flóki is an important character who is responsible for inventing Viking ships, and largely functions as Ragnar Lothbrok's right-hand man. In this episode, Daniel and Mathias talk about Rollo, the founder of the duchy of Normandy. They depart from the fictional Rollo in the show "Vikings" and move on to discussing the historical individual who actually did exist. We embark on a journey through the various sources that were written in the medieval period about a Nordic Viking warrior named Hrólfr or Hrollaugr, who succeeded in establishing a Nordic colony on the French coast. Did he come from Denmark, as the early historical sources suggest, or did he come from Norway, as later historical sources and the much later Icelandic sagas say?
