Managing Supplier Relationships: Taking the long view

Managing Supplier Relationships: Taking the long view

Episode #221 // Times are tough. Inflation is on the rise, input costs are escalating, and organizations are tightening their belts. And it won’t be long before companies start to squeeze their suppliers in an attempt to find further cost reductions.Unfortunately, your suppliers are facing exactly the same pressures as you. So how do you make sure that you’re getting the best deal possible from your suppliers, without putting them at risk too?In this episode, I look at what makes a good contract (and it’s not always the cheapest). I show you some ways to extract value, other than just the blunt instrument of price reductions. And I let you in on a critical concept: the illusion of risk transfer. You’ll learn how to go beyond the procurement process to extract maximum value from your suppliers in tough times.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Management Consultants: Are they worth it?

Episode #220 // Many companies use consultants of one type or another. In this episode, I give a bird’s-eye view of the consulting market, based upon my years of experience as a corporate client, engaging at many different levels.Whether it’s developing a new corporate strategy, embarking on a restructure, improving workforce productivity, or reducing the baseline costs of the business, there’s a consultant for every occasion. But it’s also easy to spend a lot of money with the expectation of achieving stunning results, only to realize a year or two down the track that you’re no better off than when you started.I begin with a look at the premium end of the management consulting market, including some of the recent controversies engulfing the top firms; I offer some guidance for when to engage a consultant; and I list my big 10 traps for young players, in the hope that you can avoid some of the landmines.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Intelligence Is Overrated: So, what matters more than that?

Episode #219 // When it comes to business, the relationship between intellect and leadership can be fraught. A strong leader with high intellect can be incredibly effective, and make a huge difference to the companies they work for, and to every person they lead. But highly intelligent people who rely on their intellect, to the exclusion of the leadership skills that would mobilize their people, generally struggle in the big jobs, and it often ends in tears. There’s a massive difference between being a great leader, and being a smart executive… and, unfortunately, I’ve met many more smart executives than great leaders. This episode explores the often counterbalanced forces of intelligence and leadership in some detail, and provides guidance on how to leverage your intellect to enhance your leadership performance.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Is Working From Home Working? Getting back to the office

Episode #218 // The dust is well and truly starting to settle on the Covid pandemic, and life is back to relative normality. But one of the lingering hangovers that hasn’t yet lifted is the issue of hybrid work. Many companies are increasingly keen to see their employees return to the office… but many of their people increasingly don’t want to do so.How is the work landscape developing, and what does it mean for leaders who have to manage their people’s return to the office and, in many cases, set the rules for future expectations and behavior? While we immerse ourselves in arguments about the productivity benefits of working from home, many people are becoming jaded with the new work paradigm, as their sense of purpose, team culture, and identity continue to decline. In this episode, I look at the latest research, surveys, and expert opinions on the return to office minefield. In a broad-ranging episode, I explore some of the challenges that this presents, including what top executives are planning for their companies in 2023, and how to manage the 4 obstacles that could hamper a successful return to the office.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Trusting Your Instincts: Data isn’t everything

Episode #217 // In last week’s episode, we looked at high-impact decisions. They’re the ones that have potentially significant consequences, and strike fear into the hearts of most leaders when they have to make them. But the vast majority of our decisions just aren’t like that. These days, where we have cheap, instantaneous access to virtually limitless amounts of data, you’d think our decisions would be noticeably better… but they’re not. There’s no substitute for judgment, and there are times when your instincts have to guide your decisions, even to the point where they override the available data.Today’s episode explores the fallacy of over-reliance on data in the decision-making process, and puts a case forward for greater reliance on your judgment, experience, and intuition. I also give you three focus areas to help you improve your decision-making instinct, regardless of where you are now.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Results Or People...which is more important?

Episode #215 // Adam Grant produces a huge volume of thoughtful, intelligent, insightful content on leadership and organizational behavior. And although his podcast, Work Life, isn’t on my high rotation list, I try to catch the odd episode now and then. When I do, I often find myself thinking two things: The first is: “Wow, that is so good, but it would be so easy to misinterpret!”The second is: “Wow, I agreed with you 100%, right up until the point that you said ‘x’!”The crunch for me seems to come with the inevitable leadership trade-off: between doing the things that will make your people happy, and the (often difficult) counterbalance of getting outcomes for your organization. In this episode, I explore the tension between people and results. How should you lead, if you want to create both? In my experience, it’s not an “either/or”…————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Getting An ROI From Leadership Training: Is it even possible?

Episode 213 // In a sea of potentially valuable career development options, it’s hard to work out which one is right for you. It’s even harder to make sure that the value from that training isn’t lost in the weeks, months, and years after you or your people undertake it. During my own corporate career, I saw a frustratingly large amount of money squandered on training that returned little benefit, either for the individual or the organization.  In this episode, I reveal why getting an ROI is a lot more complicated than just attending the training itself; I give you my six hot tips for maximizing your chances of making an investment in training pay off; and I give you access to a free guide to help you support your leaders’ growth through whatever leadership development program they choose to undertake. This week, I also want to share a *free* PDF with you that maps out how to support your leader's growth when they undertake any professional development training opportunity. Successful Delegation: Why is it so important?

Successful Delegation: Why is it so important?

Episode #211 // Most leaders understand the concept of delegation pretty well, but they struggle to execute. There are any number of ways that delegation can go wrong… and even if it doesn’t actually go spectacularly wrong, unless you learn to optimize your delegation approach, you’ll never get the most out of your people. You’ll always struggle with the massive workload that poor delegation foists upon you, and it will become a bad habit that becomes even more destructive the higher up you go. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be. In this episode, I take you on my career journey through the maze of delegation, and how I learned from my mistakes until I eventually became an expert in every aspect of it:Knowing what to delegateKnowing how to delegate itAnd knowing how to satisfy myself that the results would be delivered successfully, without micromanaging my people It saved me from an unsustainable workload, and that feeling of overwhelm that I know so many leaders suffer from.Have you registered for my free training, 'Delegate Your Way to Freedom'? Often, burnout is a slow creep, and it just chips away at you over time until you realize you’re not functioning at the same pace, and achieving the same performance that you used to. You get that jaded feeling… you lose your zest and enthusiasm, and find it increasingly more difficult to keep up the energy for your team. Days that used to feel effortless become a real chore, and then you feel guilty about not bringing your best for your people. In this episode, I give you strategies in three distinct areas that you can use to manage your time and energy, and rebuild your enthusiasm for the job, regardless of how you feel about it at this moment! We've also put together a *free* PDF, A Leader's Time Audit, to help you make sure that you're only working on the things that really matter. Leadership Transparency: Are there limits?

Leadership Transparency: Are there limits?

Episode #207 // Transparency in leadership is a huge topic! Virtually every leadership pundit on the planet will tell you what an important quality transparency is for a leader to possess. And they’d be right! But it isn’t black and white… there’s an incredible amount of nuance and judgment in this subject. This episode looks at transparency from the macro level (companies and countries), right down to the day-to-day complexities you face in determining the right level of transparency to employ as a leader. It can be a lot trickier than you think! Putting aside the big questions of ethics and confidentiality, you’ll need to make some judgment calls on the practical realities of transparency when leading large teams. What’s the relationship between transparency and accountability? Between transparency and trust? I give you my five rules of thumb for deciding how much transparency you should bring to the most common situations you’re likely to face. ————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? It’s STILL Respect Before Popularity: An update on your favorite episode

Episode #206 // The very first episode that we decided to lead out with on the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast was Respect Before Popularity! We figured that, if we only ever released one episode, we wanted to expose leaders to this concept, above all others. And it turns out that it’s actually still our most popular episode. So today, I want to revisit that very first episode, and give you an updated version that’s even more accessible… Let’s face it, my delivery in those early episodes was pretty sh!t :-))  But that aside, we’ve had an incredible number of leaders contact us to tell us how much of a difference the principle of respect before popularity has made to them, both personally and professionally. In this episode, as well as recapping the original concepts, I take a deeper dive into the psychological and emotional drivers of conflict aversion, and bring a new perspective on what it takes to win respect.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Leading in a Low-Accountability Culture: Q&A with Marty & Em

Leading in a Low-Accountability Culture: Q&A with Marty & Em

Episode #205 // Every piece of content we produce focuses on the link between leadership and performance. Value creation is the name of the game, so knowing what value is in your context is a prerequisite to delivering it. But, despite our laser-like focus, many of our podcast listeners work in organizations that have a very different view on performance. And many of those organizations reward people for not making waves, rather than rewarding them for making a difference. No culture is perfect, and performance is always plotted on a continuum. But if you do find yourself on the lower end of the range, working in a low-accountability culture that isn’t focused on performance, it doesn’t mean you should fall back into the comfortable mediocrity of your peers. In this Q&A episode we address this issue head on, and give you some tactics to use when the culture you’re working in doesn’t support you to do the leadership things that will make the most difference.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? The Big Leadership Moments: When real leaders step up

The Big Leadership Moments: When real leaders step up

Episode #204 // Adventurer and TV personality, Bear Grylls, (protagonist of the docuseries, Man Vs. Wild) said in an interview, “You have to come alive in the big moments... When it's NOT a big moment, you don't need to be front and centre, but when it's a big moment--BE THERE!” That’s pretty powerful. Over the years, I’ve found it to be a defining characteristic of the best leaders I’ve seen. That’s when all the talk stops, and you get to see what people are really made of. Because you won’t see their true character until the big moment arrives. We see examples in every area of life where some people step up in the big moments, while most people fade into the background, hoping not to be noticed. The good news is that, wherever you are today, this is something you can learn… and it will really differentiate you as a strong leader, in whatever context you operate in!————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Defending Against Disruptive Innovation: Capability is Everything

Defending Against Disruptive Innovation: Capability is Everything

Episode #203 // Episode #85 of the podcast addressed one of the most important (but often misunderstood) business fundamentals: “Strategy isn’t hard: don’t overcomplicate it”. It demystified some of the core elements of competitive strategy and, hopefully, it served to make strategy a little more accessible. I’m now shifting the focus to look at disruptive innovation. How do you defend against something you often can’t predict or anticipate? How can you prepare for and respond to disruptive events? Market disruptions don’t come very often but, when they do, they can have devastating effects, and severely damage your company’s market share and profitability! In this episode, I unpick the different types of innovation, and look at some sensible strategies for combating disruption in your market. How do you build the cultural firewalls that will insulate you against the shocks that you won't see coming?————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Eliminating Selection Bias: Why is it so hard?

Eliminating Selection Bias: Why is it so hard?

Episode #202 // Despite the very vocal and public focus on Diversity & Inclusion in the last 10+ years, it still appears to be a huge struggle for most organizations. It seems that the inertia created by the entrenched structures, processes, and attitudes is way harder to overcome than anyone might have imagined. When it comes to diversity, many countries, industries, and businesses have put rules in place to encourage speed of adoption, and to accelerate the rate of change… once again, this is clearly not working in most cases. In the US, the National Football League (NFL) implemented something called The Rooney Rule almost 20 years ago. This rule was designed to eliminate selection bias against African American coaches in the sport, but it has recently come under severe criticism. In this episode, I take a deep look at selection bias, and offer my seven hot tips for eliminating selection bias, and improving your hiring outcomes.🚀 Want to read the episode in blog form and chat with me about the content? Finding Your Purpose: How important is it?

Finding Your Purpose: How important is it?

Episode #201 // I recently came across two articles on the role that purpose plays in your career. The first, by Marcus Buckingham, proposed the idea that finding a career with purpose is actually a lie. The second, by Tom Rath, argued that without purpose, there will be negative consequences for your long-term prosperity, happiness, and wellbeing. Which of these is true? Are both true to some extent? It feels as though purpose has become a panacea—“Follow your purpose”, we’re told. These days, it almost seems as though pursuing anything other than your life’s true purpose is somehow frowned upon. In this episode, I look at the role that purpose plays in your career, and what else might matter. I also give you some ideas for putting ‘purpose’ into perspective, so that your career can be fulfilling, no matter what. I've also put together a *free* PDF resource 'Six Tips For Building a Career With Purpose' which you can get at www.yourceomentor.com/episode201 🚀————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 5 Episodes That Every Leader Must Listen To!

Episode #200 // When Em and I started the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast in September 2018, we spent a lot of time thinking about how we would ensure that our message would stand out in the never-ending tsunami of leadership content. We wanted our content to be clear, no bullsh!t and practical. This might sound easy if you say it fast enough, but creating content about the complexities of navigating the workplace as a leader is incredibly difficult to do in 15-20 minutes without oversimplifying it or sounding as though we're offering a silver bullet!Over the years we've become better at doing this, but there are some episodes that stick out more than others. To celebrate our 200th episode, Em and I are going to talk you through the 5 episodes we believe every leader MUST listen to. Employee Engagement: Is it the right measure?

Employee Engagement: Is it the right measure?

Episode #199 // In the last 20 years, employee engagement has become the dominant method of understanding and measuring job satisfaction. There are a number of well-worn engagement surveys, which have global reach and lots of historical data that can be used for benchmarking and statistical analysis. Many companies run an annual engagement survey, and pay close attention to the results, as if it were a key predictor of people performance. Some even reward their leaders based on improvements to this simple metric. Although an engagement survey may give you a good indication of how your people are feeling, does it really tell you how well they’re performing? In this episode, I dive into this a little deeper to see what the reality of employee engagement is, whether it really leads to better outcomes, and what other factors are likely to give you a picture of your people’s true performance!————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Layoffs Are Back: Q&A with Marty and Em

Episode #198 // The great resignation is in full swing, and this is causing a shortage of people in the labor market…which in turn, is pushing up wages…which in turn, is increasing the cost of doing business. From the other side, the squeeze is coming in the form of higher inflation…which leads to higher input costs…which leads to companies raising their prices…which leads to reduced demand for their products and services. These market forces are making it harder for companies to remain profitable. And so, the cost-cutting begins. Big tech companies like Netflix, Carvana, better.com and Peloton are laying off staff in their thousands as growth slows. This affects people’s lives. Those who are laid off, and those leaders whose accountability it is to do the laying off, can be significantly affected by the experience. In this Q&A episode, we look at layoffs from both sides, and give you some ideas for how to handle it, if you do happen to find yourself on either side of a layoff conversation!————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Why Can’t We Be Friends? Navigating friendships as a leader

Episode #197 // I first outlined one of my most important leadership philosophies in Ep.14: Friendly, But Not Friends. Since then, a few things have changed…  We’ve listened to over 1,000 leaders, who’ve taken our flagship program, Leadership Beyond the Theory; societal standards have changed (yes, believe it or not, in only 3 or 4 years); Covid has come and (sort-of) gone; and I’ve been challenged by many leaders who’ve told me that they completely disagree with my Friendly, Not Friends principle. Despite all of this, I still firmly believe in the need for professional distance between a leader and her people. In this episode, I update and reboot this important topic!Every working relationship you develop will be different. But if you can manage to maintain professional distance, you’ll be able to lead your team more effectively, and your life will be a whole lot easier.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Virtue Signals Aren’t Enough: Leadership requires more

Virtue Signals Aren’t Enough: Leadership requires more

Episode #196 // It may surprise you to learn that organizations across the globe spend over US $370 billion annually on leadership development programs. This doesn’t include the millions of other leadership resources that we tap into each day: books, podcasts, networking groups, websites, blogs, social media posts… the content is literally everywhere you turn. But despite this, none of it seems to move the needle. Leadership appears to be in as poor a state as it’s ever been, and people continue to cite poor leadership as the biggest issue they face at work. Why aren’t all these leadership development efforts making a difference? Some blame surely rests with our slide towards virtue-signaling. Leadership has become about publicly expressing opinions that demonstrate good character and moral superiority, as much as anything else. But leadership is so much more… and your people know it! If you love this episode, and want to take a deeper dive, sign up for our free Leadership Level Up Masterclass here.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Navigating The Great Resignation: Q&A with Marty and Em

Episode #193 // A lot of businesses are finding it extremely challenging to operate in the volatility of a hot labor market. Despite the hundreds of podcasts, blogs, and articles that are published daily about The Great Resignation, there doesn’t seem to be an oversupply of solutions (other than the vague notion that you need to focus on your people and keep them happy in order to retain them). In many cases, “keep them happy” equates to “pay them more”. This can have significant consequences for many businesses, which are forced to either raise their prices, or cut their margins. It can be a pretty tricky game to play and, for many smaller businesses, you may find yourself one bad decision away from a death spiral. In this Q&A episode, we answer a few listener questions that focus on specific aspects of the hot labor market. We cover the bonus culture, and people’s expectations for financial rewards; we look at the increasing number of situations where people who’ve left your business want to return; and we talk about how to leave the door open for your top performers if they do choose to leave.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Avoiding Common Biases: What really drives our decisions?

Episode #192 // We frequently hear about cognitive biases, especially when it comes to discrimination on the basis of gender, race, and sexual orientation. But our inbuilt biases operate much more broadly than this, and they can have a disproportionate influence on the outcomes we experience if we don’t develop a keen awareness of them. In this episode, I explore some of the biases that limit our self-awareness and affect our judgment, and even some that straight-up deceive us.  As you become more familiar and aware of what these biases are, and how they affect your thinking, it’s possible to avoid their most destructive consequences. Are You a Hypocritical Leader? You may be surprised…

Episode #191 // Many leaders inadvertently behave in a hypocritical way when they take a “do as I say, not as I do” approach. Sometimes, this is the result of a deep sense of entitlement in senior leaders, who are quite happy to set a standard for their people that they have no intention of observing themselves.  But many of us are simply oblivious to our own behaviors, and we aren’t in tune with what other people see. We genuinely think that we’re behaving in accordance with the standards we set for our team, but often this is no more than a breathtaking lack of self-awareness… and we use rationalization as a crutch.  This episode explores why it’s easy, even with the best intent, to sometimes come across as being hypocritical. How do you keep yourself honest, and what can you do to reduce the likelihood that your people will brand you as a hypocritical leader? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Leaving Space For People To Grow: Remembering Taylor Hawkins

Leaving Space For People To Grow: Remembering Taylor Hawkins

Episode #190 // After the recent untimely passing of Foo Fighters’ drummer, Taylor Hawkins, I came across an article in Rolling Stone magazine. It was Hawkins’ last live interview, and I was struck by a few incredible leadership lessons about fear of failure, strong leadership, and teamwork. In today’s episode, I not only want to pay tribute to Taylor Hawkins (who was one of my favorite drummers), but also to take the learnings from the unexpected world of rock music to illustrate some behaviors and strategies that all leaders can learn from. The opportunity that leaders have to create astonishing results by giving their people space to grow, and increasing their confidence to perform, is brought to life in the story of Hawkins and Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters’ frontman. Successful Transformation: Is there such a thing?

Successful Transformation: Is there such a thing?

Episode #189 // The term 'Transformation' can mean a lot of different things. I’ve seen it used to describe everything from a new IT system, to a simple cost cutting exercise, right through to a complete change in strategic direction and organizational structure. However it’s defined, and whatever you want to call it, the unfortunate truth is that your transformation is unlikely to succeed. A research report recently released by McKinsey suggests that most transformations fail to deliver anywhere near the benefits that are envisaged at the outset. Whether you’re a CEO calling the shots by making critical decisions on transformation scope, or someone who leads a team further down the organizational hierarchy, there are things you can do to increase the likelihood that your next transformation is a success. It’s Hard To Say Sorry: So when should you?

Episode 188 // People make mistakes all the time, and leaders are people! More often than not, when a leader makes an honest mistake, everyone just moves on and leaves it behind with no fanfare or post mortem. But there are times when it’s appropriate for a leader to stand up and say, “Hey, I got this wrong, and I’m sorry”. Do this too much, and you can appear weak, ineffective, and indecisive. Do it too little, and you can seem arrogant, disconnected, and out of touch! To complicate matters further, it’s not always your choice to make! In this episode, I examine the pressures facing leaders when they’re deciding whether or not it’s appropriate to say “sorry”, and I outline half a dozen likely scenarios you may find yourself in that require you to make this kind of judgment call.//Leadership Beyond the Theory is BACK! 👊 The most practical and comprehensive online leadership program that will take your leadership confidence, skills, and capability to BRAND NEW LEVELS 🔥Learn more about the program and enrol at www.leadershipbeyondthetheory.comClass starts on Monday 11th April 2022, so save your spot now! Avoiding Burnout: Streamlining your leadership approach

Avoiding Burnout: Streamlining your leadership approach

Episode 187 // In a recent episode, we explored the continuing decline in mental health, and how it can affect a leader’s role. It’s a sensitive topic, and if this were the only disruptive trend we were experiencing, that would be enough to add to the tremendous load that leaders already carry.  But there are plenty of other issues to contend with: pandemic uncertainty… physical dislocation of people and teams… changes in societal standards and expectations… This may explain, at least to some extent, the ever-increasing number of leaders suffering from burnout. If leaders can’t remain healthy, positive, and productive in these tumultuous times, then what chance does the rest of the population have? This episode gives some key insights into the underlying causes of burnout, and presents a solution that can be found only through improving and streamlining your leadership skills. We flesh this solution out more fully in our free burnout training, which you can join at bit.ly/burnout2022//Leadership Beyond the Theory is BACK! The Mental Health Minefield: How do you lead?

The Mental Health Minefield: How do you lead?

Episode 185 // TW. Today’s episode is about mental health in the workplace, so if you are currently struggling with trauma or any other mental health-related issue, I will be discussing my perspective on this topic, hopefully to educate and enlighten leaders who are struggling with it. It may be triggering for some people. I am not a doctor or mental health expert, I’m just speaking from my own experiences. If you need someone to talk to, please Google your local mental health hotline and connect with a professional who can help.// There’s an ever-increasing number of articles, blogs, and podcasts talking about the human cost of the Covid pandemic, in particular its impact on people’s mental health. This is a really sensitive topic, but it’s an area where your leadership skills are going to be challenged repeatedly. Some of the trickiest situations for leaders arise when an employee who’s struggling with personal issues isn’t performing their job to the required standard. How much latitude should you give to someone who’s having trouble functioning at work due to personal struggles and challenges? And should you always insist that people meet the standards of performance and behavior that are so critical in building a constructive, high-performance culture? In this episode, I go out on a limb to give you some guidance on how to approach these rather delicate situations.//ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACING LEADERS EVERYWHERE IS BURNOUT 🔥😰McKinsey estimates that the cost of burnout, in turnover and lost productivity, is $322 billion annually. This can be devastating, not just from a personal perspective, but also for team performance! The good news is that there are strategies that you can implement immediately in order to take control, reduce your workload, and feel like your leadership is actually making a difference to your team.If you want to learn how to steer clear of burnout or map a path out of it, join our newest FREE training: Avoiding Burnout by Streamlining Your Leadership Approach.SAVE THE DATE:🗓️ 24 March: 8AM (AEDT), or🗓️ 25 March: 7AM (AEDT)In this free training, I’m going to show you how to ensure that you’re only spending time on the most valuable leadership tasks, empowering your people to work to their highest potential!SAVE YOUR SPOT HERE Hosted on Acast. What is Strong Leadership? Taking people where they ought to be

Episode #182 // Almost all of the content that we produce on the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast is designed to help you become a stronger leader. But what is ‘strong leadership’? How would you know if you were being strong enough, without crossing the line into tough, controlling, or autocratic leadership? This episode delves into the detail of what defines strong leadership. What are the observable characteristics of the strong leader? Your primary objective as a leader is to deliver value—to produce results, and maximize the use of the resources that your organization has entrusted to you. The Family Culture: Is it a good thing?

The Family Culture: Is it a good thing?

Episode #180 // I’ve heard many leaders in my time making statements about their team being “more like a family” than anything else (as if that’s a good thing)!Recently, the CEO of one of the largest companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange railed against the company’s decline into a family culture. He sent a lengthy memo to his employees explaining exactly why this was a problem…and when it was leaked it caused quite a stir!In this episode, I unpick the mystique of family culture. What are the distinguishing features of a family culture? How do you incorporate some of the positive elements of the family culture, without also suffering the destructive elements it inevitably brings? And is it even possible to get high performance from a family culture? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Survival of the Fittest: Is it the path to high performance?

Episode #179 // While enjoying my holiday Netflix binge, I watched the documentary series, Formula 1: Drive to Survive. While I’m not a fan of motor sports, I found the series unbelievably compelling. There are countless lessons to be taken from the series about leadership, high-performing teams, organizational culture, and the consequences of the extreme pressure that comes with performing at the absolute highest levels. In this episode, I unpick the cultural dynamics of F1 racing portrayed in the documentary, both good and bad. How does capital investment affect the teams? Do the team principals callously discard underperformers? How does nepotism affect performance? And does the F1 ethos allow a culture of bullying and harassment to flourish in some of the teams? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Visibility in a Remote World: Appearances can be deceiving

Visibility in a Remote World: Appearances can be deceiving

Episode #178 // Since the pandemic forced us into remote working, many people have turned their work day into performance art. They now pursue the goal of appearing to be busy, rather than actually delivering value-adding results. The activity becomes the end, rather than the means to an end.Although this is nothing new (there have always been people who appear to be busy, while achieving little), it has definitely become harder for leaders to identify and deal with than it was in the past. How can you tell when someone is replacing real work with demonstrations of their own busyness? We’d all like to think that we’re able to spot this behavior a mile away, but it’s sometimes a little more complicated than we might imagine. This episode is all about identifying and managing the people on your team who are potential Oscar nominees for the award of “Best Performance in a Working Role”.I've also put together a completely free PDF guide to go with this episode '5 Ways to Keep Your Virtual Team on Task', which you can download at https://www.yourceomentor.com/episode178! The Billable Hours Dilemma: Breaking the paradigm

The Billable Hours Dilemma: Breaking the paradigm

Episode #177 // In the billable hours world, supplier companies deliver services to client companies in an exchange of time for money. It’s the dominant business model in legal, accounting, and consulting firms. This presents a wonderful opportunity for organizations to leverage expertise and capability that they don’t possess themselves. But it also comes with its own peculiar issues and risks, which can erode or negate any potential value. In this episode, I explore the billable hours model from both sides of the equation. Why is it so hard for service providers to think long term? What are the ‘traps for young players’ when engaging service firms to deliver work on a time and materials basis? And what can you do to increase the likelihood of extracting real value from any engagement? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Stop Doing Your People’s Work: Lead THEM to do it

Episode #172 // When one of my articles for Harvard Business Review blew up recently on social media, we decided to make it more accessible to our community of No Bullsh!t Leaders by turning it into a podcast episode. And because I don’t have a word limit here, I can expand it out and offer examples until my heart’s content! When you first move into a leadership role, it’s easy to develop bad habits… one of those habits is over-functioning for your people: doing their work for them. We think we’re doing it for all the right reasons and it’s easy to rationalize. But it’s also the surest way to weaken your team, limit its potential, and constrain its culture. In this episode I briefly touch upon the transition from individual contributor to people leader, explore why we love to do our people’s work for them, and give you three surefire ways to build the discipline to let your people do their jobs, without your well-meaning but unhelpful intervention! To make this episode even more valuable for you, I've put the key points into a *free* PDF resource, '3 Failsafe Ways to Stay Out of Your People's Work' which you can download at https://www.yourceomentor.com/episode172 Hosted on Acast.
