BCI Award: Tips and Tricks from the Pros - Drs. Guger, Krusienski, Rutkowski & Allison
Welcome to the new Neurocareers BCI Award podcast series! In this first episode, we are meeting with the neurotech Pro team to discover the secrets of winning the prestigious International Brain-Computer Interface Award! We're excited to have Dr. Christoph Guger, Dr. Dean Krusienski, Dr. Tomasz Rutkowski, and Dr. Brendan Allison, founding members, judges, and winners of the prestigious International Brain-Computer Interface Award. With their years of experience, cutting-edge knowledge, and contagious enthusiasm, the Pros will show you how to make the impossible possible in neurotechnologies. They'll share their tips and tricks for success, from brainstorming to submitting your project and persevering through the process. Take this opportunity to learn from the best in neurotechnologies. And for those interested in submitting their project, the deadline for the BCI Award project submission is September 1st - so let's get started! Co-hosted by Dr. Christoph Guger, tune in to the 'Neurocareers: Doing the Impossible!' podcast and join us as we interview BCI Award nominees and winners. So, buckle up, and let's blast off into the amazing world of Brain-Computer Interfaces! About the Podcast Guests: Dr. Christoph Guger Dr. Christoph Guger is a true pioneer in the world of neurotechnology! He studied electrical and biomedical engineering at the University of Technology Graz in Austria and at Johns Hopkins University in the USA. He received his PhD in 1999. In the same year, he founded g.tec, which produces high-quality neurotechnology and real-time brain-computer interfaces. Today, g.tec has branches in Austria, Spain, the USA, Canada, and Hong Kong. The company is involved in numerous international research projects focused on brain-computer interfacing, neuromodulation, stroke rehabilitation, communication with patients with disorders of consciousness, and high-gamma mapping in epilepsy and tumor patients. Dr. Guger is a co-host of the BCI Award Neurocareers podcast series. Learn more about Dr. Guger and his company at g.tec's website: https://www.gtec.at/ Dr. Dean Krusienski Dean J. Krusienski, PhD, is a top brain-computer interface (BCI) specialist with a mission to help people with disabilities communicate and interact with their environment through their brainwaves. He is a Penn State grad with a PhD in electrical engineering and postdoctoral research at the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center BCI Laboratory. His specialties are decoding and translating neural signals, digital signal and image processing, machine learning, artificial neural networks, and biomedical and musical applications. Dr. Krusienski's research has received support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute of Aerospace/NASA. Currently, Dr. Kruscienski leads the ASPEN Lab at Virginia Commonwealth University. With his expertise and passion for technology, Dr. Krusienski is making the impossible possible in the world of neurotechnologies! Find Dr. Krusienski Lab's website with papers and contact info here: https://sites.google.com/vcu.edu/aspenlab/ Dr. Tomasz Rutkowski Tomasz Rutkowski, PhD, is a researcher and educator specializing in computational neuroscience (neurotechnology), multi-sensory (multimedia) applications, artificial intelligence, and intelligence augmentation. He has lived in Japan since 1998 and is currently a research scientist at RIKEN AIP in Tokyo and a research fellow at the University of Tokyo and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland. He is an award-winning developer of a tactile (haptic) brain-computer interface. He has contributed to research on a direct brain-music interface with Prof. Furukawa's Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music team. Tomek has also worked on brain correlates of creativity with Prof. Okada at The University of Tokyo. His current research at RIKEN AIP focuses on human intelligence augmentation (IA) for dementia prevention and passive BCI development using deep learning techniques. He is a Founding Board Member of the BCI Society and Founding Editor of the BCI Journal. With a Google Scholar h-index of 47, he is a recognized expert in the field. Currently self-employed as a BCI Scientist at Allison Consulting, LLC, Dr. Allison specializes in helping clients commercialize BCIs. He reviews ideas and plans, provides background information and introductions to key people, and writes reports, funding proposals, and other content. Dr. Allison's standout ability within the BCI community is scientific writing, which led him to consult on various projects, including the BCI Award book series and grant writing. Despite his consulting work, Dr. Allison is still actively involved in BCI research, mainly with his friend Prof. Jing in Shanghai, on an unpaid basis.
