The Beauty of Gratitude: Cashmere Robes, Indigenous Communities and the Premiere of Renaissance: a film by Beyoncé
Fresh from my trip back in New York, I reflect on all that’s happened this week. My very first Naked Beauty product has launched! I designed the ultimate cashmere robe for self-care with Garin. Designing this robe with my good friend Negarin has been many months in the making and every little detail was considered to make this piece a true luxury. I’m happy to share we’re offering international shipping on this limited-edition item and a handful of discount codes are still active if you enter code Brooke15 at checkout. After a few days in the city, we transitioned to Sag Harbor where I’ve grown up visiting my whole life. I was honored to get the opportunity to speak to and learn from the people of the Shinnecock Nation, the Native Territory of the Indigenous Americans of Southampton. I was able to sit down with the chairman of Shinnecock Nation, Brian Polite, and hear his perspective on Thanksgiving and their unique native culture. And if this week wasn’t full enough, I landed in LA and went straight to the world premiere of Renaissance: a film by Beyonce! Disrupting the Celebrity Skincare Game ft. John Legend
“It’s outrageous how little we’re considered. In dermatology books, they almost never feature Brown or Black skin tones. That means in a nation where the majority of our kids are Brown or Black, we’re not even preparing for the world as it is right now.” - John LegendWhen EGOT-winning artist John Legend was approached to start a skincare company, he knew that accessibility and audience would be key to standing apart from the seemingly infinite lines of other celebrity brands. Which is exactly why Loved01 (pronounced “Loved One”) fills the rapidly growing market demand for those of us with melanin-rich skin, all at an affordable drugstore price point. And with L’Oreal veteran Kia Lowe by his side as the brand’s president, Loved01 is determined to centralize the Brown and Black consumers that are all too often characterized as a “niche market.” Tune in as I sit down with John to discuss his entry point into beauty, his journey from the business world to the music industry, his insights on Succession, and Loved01 president Kia Lowe to discuss her journey to Loved01 as well as the future of the brand. Bold Pigments, Fast Face Makeup, and the Black-Owned Product Pipeline ft. Melissa Butler
Recently touted as the largest Black-owned beauty company at Target, Melissa Butler’s Lip Bar is truly in a league of its own. But Melissa’s rise to the top was anything but linear. Hot Takes on the Cultural Obsession of Hotness ft. Darian Symoné Harvin
I don’t know about you, but our cultural fascination not just with beauty, but with hotness seems to be on the rise. Since moving to LA, I’ve begun to realize just how much we’ve normalized this pursuit of becoming the most visually attractive versions of ourselves. And discovering Reddit channels like HowToBeHot have only emphasized the fascination. But why are we so obsessed with hotness and who exactly is writing the rule book? Well, I had to hit up the one and only Darian Symoné Harvin to help me break it all down. As one of my favorite Naked Beauty guests and beauty reporters, Darian and I sat down to discuss lip flips and buccal fat removal, question what’s really considered obsessive when it comes to beauty, break down the socioeconomic power behind your hotness, and share our own beauty “maxxing” tips.
