EP#143: Hoist the Colors - An Interview with Lee Arenberg
Join Justin as he chats with veteran stage and screen actor Lee Arenberg about pirates, Pintel, filming abroad, character acting, Once Upon A Time, and more!Lee Arenberg bio:"Lee Arenberg has the remarkable ability to morph himself into frightening aliens, twisted psychotherapists, lascivious entertainment executives and everything in between. Most frequently referred to as a character actor, Arenberg maintains a flourishing acting career--almost 20 years spanning television, stage and film. Arenberg has appeared in more than 30 movies, including Cradle Will Rock, RoboCop 3, Waterworld, Bob Roberts, The Apocalypse, Cross My Heart and the fantasy adventure feature Dungeons & Dragons. Bitten by the acting bug at age eight when he portrayed David in his Hebrew school play, "Killing Goliath", Arenberg notes that the parable "could be the title of any actor's chances in this game." A native Angeleno, Lee attended Santa Monica high school with "brat packers" Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr. and Emilio Estevez, and co-wrote a play with Estevez which was directed by Penn. Lee's first professional job was in 1986 at the Mark Taper Forum in "Ghetto", a play directed by Gordon Davidson. Within weeks he was cast in three films, including the role of Norton in the feature Tapeheadsopposite Tim Robbins and John Cusack. Guest appearances on television began in 1987 with the hit sitcom Perfect Strangers, and have continued with memorable roles such as the parking space-stealing New Yorker on Seinfeld and as the murderous rock promoter opposite Katey Sagal and Sam Kinison in Tales from the Crypt, as well as roles on Arli$$, Friends, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Arenberg can also be seen in the role of the notoriously huge studio head, Bobby G., on the controversial syndicated comedy Action opposite series star Jay Mohr. Arenberg names his family and friends as his inspirations, and states that having grown up on Los Angeles' Westside, he was able to see actors as the parents of friends and classmates, not as just as movie stars. "It also gave me an honest assessment of the industry and what I was getting myself into," he laughs. He credits "fear of failure" as his main motivation, and admires the talents and creativity of such legendary actors Paul Muni, Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff. Lee also credits much of his development as an actor to his participation in the Actors' Gang, one of Los Angeles' oldest theater companies. The Actors' Gang was founded by Lee in 1981 with Tim Robbins and other friends from UCLA. After 20 years as an actor in the group, Lee recently made his writing and directing debut with Foursome, a play about golf, sex and witchcraft. In his leisure time, Arenberg enjoys golf, cooking, blues harmonica, video games and pitching for his softball team Bubblin' Crude, which is made up of other actors, many of whom are friends from high school. He is involved with St. Jude's Children's Hospital and other children's health causes, and animal rights organizations, participating regularly in fund raising efforts on behalf of those charitable causes."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. EP#141: Bathed in Blood and Shadow - An Interview with Anders Hove
Join Justin as he chats with horror icon Anders Hove about becoming Radu Vladislas, growing up in Greenland, theater, drunken sword fights, Romania, and the fate of Subspecies 5!Anders Hove bio:"Anders Hove was born in Greenland on the 16th of January 1956 to a mother who was a nurse and a father who worked as a meteorologist. His father was politically involved in Greenland and helped the country work towards the government it has today. Spending most of his childhood there, Anders later moved with his parents to Thisted in Denmark when he was 14 years old. In the 1970s, Anders attended the Royal Academy in Denmark to learn formal acting. Before this he had studied law and economics and had planned on taking over his father's business. In 1980, he married an American dancer and choreographer named Ann Thayer Crosset, and they have two sons together, Anders Ezra and Elliot Todd. His first real movie role was in the Danish movie In the Middle of the Night (Middle of the Night), in which he played Nalle. After working in Denmark for a time as a stage and screen actor, Anders decided to try his luck on the American front. He and his wife sold their belongings and moved to the States. There he landed parts in shows like "Tales From the Crypt" and the sci-fi movie Critters 4 as 'Rick', the critter-infested ships captain, and the role that many know and remember him for, as the fiendish and obsessive 'Cesar Faison' on the daytime soap opera "General Hospital". He also worked in a Canadian soap opera called "Family Passions" with General Hospital co-star and friend Kin Shriner. Another former co-star on General Hospital, Michael Watson suggested that Anders should play the villainous vampire 'Radu Vladislas' in the Full Moon movie Subspecies. He ended up being in three sequels to the movie during the 90s playing the long-fingered, drooling, infamous Radu. Hove returned to Denmark in the mid 90s and has continued to act there, being a favorite actor of the 'Dogme'-directors, usually playing bad guys."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. EP#140: Aliens and Shakespeare - An Interview with Brian Thompson
Join Justin, Daniel, and Angelique as they chat with veteran stage and screen actor Brian Thompson about literature, the stage, screen writing red flags, Mortal Kombat, method acting, and more!Brian Thompson bio:"Brian Earl Thompson was born on August 28, 1959 in Ellensburg, Washington. Raised on the Columbia River in Longview, he learned the value of academics and athletics, as the son of two teachers and the second of six siblings. His interest in acting was first sparked during his senior year of high school with the role of the Russian ballet instructor, Boris Kolenkhov, in the comedy "You Can't Take it With You". Under the pretense of attending Central Washington University to play football and study business management, he quietly auditioned for every available play, treading the boards for a dozen school productions, from musicals and operas to the more lighthearted fare of Neil Simon.Earning a scholarship to the University of California-Irvine, he sailed through a three-year Master of Fine Arts program, learning from such theatrical luminaries as playwright Edward Albee, Robert Cohen and Jerzy Grotoswski, and supplementing his education through work with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. He began to audition theatrically before graduation, and by that time, he had his SAG card, an agent and five professional credits, including James Cameron's The Terminator, where he and Bill Paxton's clothes were forcibly removed by a naked Arnold Schwarzenegger. About a year after Arnold took Brian's clothes, Sylvester Stallone wanted a hack at Brian as well. After seven auditions and a screen test, Brian earned the right to get impaled on a meat hook, then burned alive, Stallone's Cobra. This began a string of credits that has left Thompson in and around some of Hollywood's biggest and most projects.Brian has tackled two superhero roles as well: first, Conan the Librarian (1999), starring red in the title role, a PBS special to encourage kids to read. He also earned critical acclaim playing the larger-than-life role of Hercules in Jason and the Argonauts. Probably the first role that demanded use of his classical background as well as his 6' 3" muscled frame. Brian says that no gym can claim him as a member, and that his physique is kept honed by years of windsurfing and kitesurfing. Taking a curiously "musical" approach to his craft, the actor continually seeks fresh rhythms for each new role. Brian verifies his well-rounded nature with a resume that lists such special skills as martial arts (black belt Hapkido), piano and sushi rolling. He currently resides at home with his son Jordan and daughter Daphne."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. EP#136: Maestro on Elm Street - An Interview with Charles Bernstein
Join Justin, Daniel, and Angelique as they chat with legendary film composer Charles Bernstein about the Elm Street franchise, the early days of composition, underground Jazz clubs in France, navigating the industry, and more!Charles Bernstein bio:Talented, prolific and versatile film composer Charles Bernstein was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was young, and he eventually conducted his own orchestral music at age sixteen and later studied composition with Vitorio Giannini and Vincent Persichetti at Juilliard in NYC. Bernstein also attended the University of California; he received an Outstanding Graduate of the College Award, a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship and a Chancellor's Doctoral Teaching Fellowship while working with American composer Roy Harris. His impressively eclectic musical style ranges from comedy to drama to action to horror. Bernstein has supplied the scores for a bunch of enjoyably down'n'dirty early drive-in exploitation features: he turned up the funk with "That Man Bolt," went all-out groovy for the "Invasion of the Bee Girls," and kicked out the tuneful swinging country jams on "White Lightning" (a snippet of this score was used in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill Vol. 1," and more extensively in his "Inglorious Basterds"), followed "by Gator," "A Small Town in Texas," and "Nightmare in Badham County." Bernstein's scores in the horror genre are especially chilling and effective: Among his finest fright film scores are "Hex," "Sweet Kill," "The Entity" (this is one of Bernstein's most inspired, inventive and underrated scores; it was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Music), "Cujo," Wes Craven's terrifying classics "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and "Deadly Friend," as well as "April Fool's Day." Moreover, Bernstein has done scores for a large number of made-for-TV movies. He won an Emmy Award for his score for the "Little Miss Perfect." His scores for "Enslavement" and "The Sea Wolf" were nominated for Emmy Awards while his score for "The Man Who Broke A 1,000 Chains" received a Cable ACE Award nomination for Original Score. Outside of his substantial film and television work, Bernstein has also done music for Off-Broadway theater, modern dance, and the World Festival of Sacred Music, played jazz in the cellars of Paris, and danced and played folk music with the Greeks and gypsies from the Balkans. His music is frequently heard in hip-hop samples, and is featured in the 2023 Drake/21 Savage hit, "Rich Flex." Moreover, Bernstein has written the acclaimed books "Film Music and Everything Else" and "Movie Music: An Insider's View." He won an ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for his writing on music. Bernstein has been a former Vice President and long-serving member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors. He is a current Vice President and Board member of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and is on the Board of Directors of the ASCAP Foundation. In addition, Charles Bernstein has taught on the graduate film scoring faculty at USC and holds an annual film scoring seminar in the summer at UCLA Extension."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. Join Justin, Nick, and Angelique as they chat with filmmaker and co-founder of Troma Entertainment Lloyd Kaufman about cinema history, free speech, #shakespearesh!tstorm, The Toxic Avenger, and doing drugs. Lloyd Kaufman bio:"Stanley Lloyd Kaufman never really wanted to make movies, he wanted to work in Broadway musicals. During his years in Yale he was introduced to "B" pictures and the works of Roger Corman. Lloyd later got the opportunity to executive-produce a short movie made by a fellow student. The film, called "Rappacini", got him even more interested in movies. He bought his own camera and took it with him to Chad, Africa, were he spent his summer. There, he shot a 15-minute film of a pig being slaughtered. That was his first movie, and was the birth of what was later to become known as Troma Films. He showed the footage of the squealing pig being killed to his family, and their reaction to it made him wonder if making movies that shocked audiences would keep them in their seats to see what would happen next.He wanted to be a director right then and there, so he got a couple of friends at Yale and made his second movie, The Girl Who Returned. People loved it, and he went straight to work on other films, helping out on projects like Joe, Rocky and Saturday Night Fever.Lloyd put in a lot of long, hard hours in the film business, just to be in the credits and to get money for his next project, a full-length feature. It was a tribute to Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and the classic era of silent-film comedy. Even though Lloyd hated the movie when it was completed, people seemed to love it. He formed a studio called 15th Street Films with friends and producers Frank Vitale and Oliver Stone. Together, they made Sugar Cookies and Cry Uncle, directed by John G. Avildsen. A friend from Yale, Michael Herz, saw Lloyd in a small scene in "Cry Uncle" and contacted him to try to get into the film business. Kaufman took Herz in, as the company needed some help after Oliver Stone quit to make his own movies. Michael invested in a film they thought would be their biggest hit yet, Schwartz: The Brave Detective (aka "Big Gus, What's the Fuss?"). It turned out to be a huge flop and 15th Street Films was ruined. Lloyd and Michael owed thousands of dollars to producers and friends and family members who had invested in the picture.Lloyd, trying to find a quick way to pay off the bills, made The Divine Obsession, and with Michael formed Troma Studios, hoping to make some decent movies, since they only owned the rights to films they thought were poor. They were introduced to Joel M. Reed, who had an unfinished movie called "Master Sardu and the Horror Trio". The film was re-edited and completed at Troma Studios (which consisted of just one room) during 1975, re-titled and released in 1976 as Blood Sucking Freaks (aka "Bloodsucking Freaks"). It was enough of a success to enable them to pay the rent so they wouldn't lose the company.Lloyd later got a call from a theater that wanted a "sexy movie" like The Divine Obsession, but about softball (!). The resulting film, Squeeze Play, used up all the money Troma had earned from "Bloodsucking Freaks" and, as it turned out, no one wanted to see it--not even the theater owner who wanted it made in the first place (he actually wanted a porno movie). Just when things looked their darkest, they got a call from another theater which was scheduled to show a film, but the distributor pulled it at the last minute. Troma rushed "Squeeze Play" right over, and it turned out to be a huge hit. Lloyd, Michael and Troma eventually made millions from it, and had enough money to buy their own building (which remains as Troma Headquarters). Troma then turned out a stream of "sexy" comedies-- Waitress!, The First Turn-On!!, Stuck on You!--but there was a glut of "T&A" films on the market. Lloyd noticed that a lot of comedies were being made and decided to make one, but much different than the rest. After reading an article that claimed horror movies were dead, Lloyd got the idea to combine both horror and comedy, and Troma came up with "Health Club Horror"--later re-titled and released as The Toxic Avenger, a monster hit that finally put Troma on the map.Lloyd Kaufman and Troma have become icons in the cult-movie world, and Troma has distributed over 1000 films. Lloyd has continued his career as a director in addition to producing, and Troma has turned out such films as Monster in the Closet, Class of Nuke 'Em High, Combat Shock, Troma's War, and Fortress of Amerikkka, and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, which follows an army of undead chickens as they seek revenge on a fast food palace."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. All the stories in the collection were accompanied by top artists of the horror genre, such as Clive Barker, Nick Percival, Daniele Serra, Vincent Sammy, Ben Baldwin, Tara Bush, Steve McGinnis and Eric Gross. Publishers Weekly gave the book a starred review, calling it "...a delight for the darker senses, this is a satisfying triumph in a befitting, unforgiving, style. "In early 2018, Wilde joined forces with director, writer and composer Chris Alexander ('Blood for Irina', 'Queen of Blood', 'Female Werewolf', 'Blood Dynasty', 'Space Vampire') to co-produce and co-write a horror film called 'Blue Eyes', based on a short story by Wilde. In November 2018, Comet Press released the audio book of The Venus Complex, narrated by Hellraiser horror icon, Doug Bradley."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. EP#104: Children of the Night - An Interview with Matthew Mungle
Join Justin and Angelique as they chat with Academy Award Winning make-up and special effects artists Matthew Mungle about classic monsters, Mausoleum, Silver Bullet, Dracula, and more!Matthew Mungle bio:"Academy Award winner Matthew W. Mungle is regarded as one of Hollywood's premier Make-up Effects & Prosthetic Artists. With over 250 film and television projects to his credit, Matthew has earned accolades and recognition as one of the industry's top masters of Makeup Effects Illusionist.Born in Durant, Oklahoma in 1956, Matthew was one of five children born to Atoka dairy farmer Jene and Becky Mungle. As a boy he recalls seeing Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy. In 1964 with the release of The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao and The List of Adrian Messenger, Matthew credits the films as having been his greatest influence and deciding factor in becoming a Make-up Effects Artist. He was fascinated with the make-up, often "borrowing" his mother's cosmetics to create his own version of horror. In 1968, a film that would revolutionize make-up effects and further impact the small-town boy from Atoka was the release, Planet of the Apes. It is hard to say how many times Matthew saw the film. What he did know was that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his idols, namely Lon Chaney, Sr., Jack Pierce and John Chambers, who won the Academy Award for the specialized make-up creations for Planet of the Apes. As he got older, he would learn from books and magazines such as Richard Corson's Stage Make-up & Dick Smith's Do It Yourself Monster Make-up Handbook and would send away for theatrical make-up from New York and Dallas specialty stores - experimenting with face casts and prosthetics on willing family members and friends. Although his parents thought it was a phase he would soon outgrow, Matthew knew differently.Return of the Planet of the Apes was released when he was a sophomore in High School and he encouraged the owner of the local movie theatre to let him dress up as one of the chimpanzees to promote the film. Not only did he dress and act the part but also created his own prosthetic make-up. The realism was so startling to the small town of Atoka, that many thought Hollywood had sent an actor to hype the film! Matthew would continue to promote films at the Thompson Theatre in Atoka by applying his own make-up and costumes until he graduated from High School.Although his sights were still on Hollywood, at his father's insistence, he applied and was accepted into Oklahoma State University as a theatre arts major in 1975 after graduating from Atoka High School. Working with props and make-up for various productions, Matthew eagerly absorbed the educational tools being given.Matthew finally arrived in Hollywood in December 1977 after applying and being accepted into Joe Blasco's Make-up Center - the premier academy responsible for training many of the film and television industry's elite Make-up Artists. "From the very beginning, Matthew showed exceptional talent!" claims Blasco, whose own career as a top make-up artist turned educator, has been instrumental in graduating Academy Award winners. "I instinctively knew that Matthew had what it takes to become a success in this business. His dedication to the art form and rapid ability to master the craft led me to hire him as an instructor following his graduation from my school in 1978. He stayed on-staff as a teacher until his own popularity as a working make-up artist became too demanding."Matthew credits Joe Blasco with his professional start & as mentor in the industry. "I was a sponge, absorbing every ounce of knowledge I could. Whether learning the techniques of beauty make-up or casting molds and working with prosthetics, I wanted to be as versatile as I could". Today, Matthew is a veteran voice to up-and-coming artists hoping to find their own niche in the industry. "If you want to be a working make-up artist, then you should learn and perfect all areas of the craft".Matthew's professional career began on low-budget projects such as The Dorm That Dripped Blood, The Kindred, War Party, The Guardian & Navy Seals which taught him to think quickly on his feet and how to be a great department head Make-up Artist. Matthew joined I.A. Local 706 in the summer of 1989 and passed his test to become a Journeyman Make-up Artist in early 1990. His transformation of Glenn Close and Janet McTeer in Albert Nobbs earned Lynn Johnson, Martial Corneville & him his fourth Oscar nomination in 2011.Matthew's expertise in prosthetic aging & character make-up created a vast field of job opportunities in both film and TV --- HBO's Citizen Cohn, starring James Woods and earning him his first Emmy in 1993 along with Deborah Lamia Denaver, Lynne Eagan & John Jackson. Another nomination followed in 1997 for Miss Evers' Boys. Two more nominations were earned in 1998 --- TNT's Wallace and ABC's Oliver Twist and in 1999 for his work on TNT's Houdini. Shortly after the X-Files series ended Matthew was hired to work on CBS's C.S.I. Miami and Presidio Med. Even with a demanding schedule, Matthew found time to work on TNT's Door-to-Door, which earned him an Emmy in 2003. Join Justin, Daniel, and Angelique as they chat with director, writer, and Master of Horror Mick Garris about Ray Bradbury, Rod Serling, Stephen King, creativity, short fiction, the Post Mortem Podcast, and his recently released autobiography! Mick Garris bio:"Born in Santa Monica, California, on December 4, 1951, Mick Garris grew up with his mother in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Van Nuys from age 12, following his parents' divorce. Garris was making his own 8mm home movies around that time, and when he got older be became a freelance critic for a number of film and music celebrities. He wrote publications for various bands and movies for newspapers and magazines like "The San Diego Door", "The Los Angewles Herald-Examiner", "Cinefantastique" and "Starlog" through the 1970s.For eight years he was the lead singer in a band called The Horsefeathers Quintet, which disbanded in 1976. In 1977 Garris was hired as a receptionist in George Lucas' newly formed company Star Wars Corporation where, through industry contacts, he created and served as the on-screen host for a Los Angeles cable access interview program show called "Fastasy Film Festival," which aired on L.A.'s legendary Z-Channel. Guests included filmmakers like John Landis, Joe Dante, John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg and actors like William Shatner and Christopher Lee.In 1980 Garris worked as a press agent for the newly merged Pickwick-Maslansky-Koeninsberg agency. He also began making a name for himself with photographing and directing "making-of..." features for such films as Scanners, The Howling, Halloween II, The Thing and Videodrome. In 1982 Garris was hired by MCA/Universal to write the script for Coming Soon, which was a collection of horror movie trailers featuring Jamie Lee Curtis as the hostess and directed by John Landis. While struggling to find more work, Garris was hired by Steven Spielberg to be one of the writers and story editors for Spielberg's sci-fi anthology series Amazing Stories. Garris worked as as an editor again for Spielberg in the sci-fi fantasy *batteries not included. He also wrote screenplays for more horror anthology TV shows, from Freddy's Nightmares to a stint on the HBO cable series Tales from the Crypt, as well as co-writer on the screenplays for The Fly II and the 'Stephen Sommers' remake The Mummy. Garris wrote and directed Psycho IV: The Beginning as a prequel to the Anthony Perkins "Psycho" films, featuring Perkins in his fourth (and last) appearance as Norman Bates. Co-starring with Perkins was Henry Thomas (from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial fame), whom Garris hired to play young Norman. That same year Garris was approached by MCA/Universal to create a syndicated TV series about werewolves which was to be based on the hit John Landis film An American Werewolf in London. The resulting series, She-Wolf of London, ran for two seasons. In 1992 Garris directed an original screenplay by Stephen King, Sleepwalkers. The following year Garris received story and screenplay credit for the comic horror film Hocus Pocus, and the year after that he took the reins at the request of Stephen King for the six-hour mini-series The Stand based on King's best-selling horror novel. The mini-series, which had a grueling 20-month shooting schedule, was one of the most-watched shows of 1994. Garris and King again teamed up for a three-part made-for-TV rewriting of King's novel, The Shining. Later that year Garris oversaw the directing for Quicksilver Highway, based on a pair of horror stories by King and Clive Barker. Garris directed Höst (later changed to "Virtual Obsession"), based on a novel by Peter James, with a screenplay written by P.G. Sturges, about a computer genius stalked by a female colleague bent on digitizing her consciousness. Taking a break from horror films, Garris directed The Judge, an adaption of the mystery novel by Steve Martini. Garris and Stephen King reunited for Riding the Bullet, directed by Garris and written by King, based on an internet short short about a hitchhiker being picked up by a soul-searching angel of death driving a 1959 Plymouth. They also collaborated on Desperation, based on King's 1997 horror novel. In 2005 Garris was able to assemble a group of his fellow horror film directors in the anthology horror series Masters of Horror, which he created and executive-produced. Garris' own contribution, "Chocolate", was based on his own short story, written 20 years earlier."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. EP#100: Beyond the Final Frontier - An Interview with Jonathan Frakes
Join Justin as he chats with actor and director Jonathan Frakes about literature, theater, deep space, and Beyond Belief!Jonathan Frakes bio:"Jonathan Scott Frakes was born in Bellefonte, central Pennsylvania. He is the son of Doris J. (Yingling) and Dr. James R. Frakes, a professor. His parents moved with Jonathan and his younger brother Daniel to Bethlehem in eastern Pennsylvania. There, his father taught English at Lehigh University, where he held the Fairchild chair in American Literature until his passing in 2002. Frakes is of German, and some English, ancestry. While growing up Jonathan was introduced to jazz by his father and started playing the trombone when he was in fourth grade. As a child Jonathan was always friendly, funny and somewhat of an actor according to a childhood friend. In high school he played in the band and ran track. He graduated from Liberty High in Bethlehem in 1970. The day after he graduated he started classes at Pennsylvania State University, enrolling as a psychology major. The next summer he worked as an usher for the local theater and observed his peers thoroughly enjoying acting. He was motivated to switch his major to theater arts and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1974.At this point he decided to move to New York City and try to make it as an actor. The roles did not come easily so he had to take side jobs, such as a waiter, a furniture mover (where he injured up his back), and a stint as Captain America for Marvel Comics. Meanwhile he won roles in the Broadway musical "Shenandoah" and on the soap opera The Doctors as Vietnam veteran Tom Carroll from 1977 to 1978. At his agent's urging Jonathan moved to Los Angeles in late 1978 to try his hand at television guest appearances. He guest-starred on several of the big prime-time shows of the time, including Charlie's Angels, Fantasy Island, Barnaby Jones, Quincy, M.E., Highway to Heaven, The Waltons, and The Dukes of Hazzard.During the 1980s Jonathan landed a starring role in a prime-time soap opera, Bare Essence, which had spun off a successful miniseries of the same name. However the show did not take off with the viewers and was soon canceled. He went back to guest appearances for two more years until he got the part of Stanley Hazard in the Civil War epic North & South: Book 1, North & South. After spending more than six months filming all over the southern United States, he and his co-star, Genie Francis, fell in love (he had met her three years before when they co-starred in Bare Essence). During that time he and Genie didn't have much to do with each other, other than his making fun of her hair, according to her. However three years later they were an item.In early 1987 Jonathan went to an audition for a new television series at the urging of his soon-to-be wife and her family. After six weeks, and seven auditions, he won the role that would bring him worldwide fame: that of Commander William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was at this time, he and Genie announced their engagement. They would have to postpone their wedding twice because of his job but were finally married in the first-season hiatus on May 28, 1988. All of his new co-stars attended the wedding, along with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. During the seven years Frakes starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation, he not only acted but discovered that he had a talent for directing. He helmed eight episodes in all and was invited to direct on the Next Generation spin-offs, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. The day after his 42nd birthday, on August 20, his son, Jameson Ivor Frakes, was born. Jameson is named after both his grandfathers, the late James Frakes and the late actor Ivor Francis, Genie's father. During this time Jonathan actually turned down work, preferring to stay at home and raise his son with his wife. For the next two years he did a few guest appearances on television. In 1996 it was announced that he was to be the director of the next Star Trek film, Star Trek: First Contact. He received critical praise for his work on the film and it became the highest-grossing entry of the franchise to date. He formed a production company, Goepp Circle Productions, named after the street he lived on in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Just two days after his ninth wedding anniversary in 1997, Elizabeth Francis Frakes was born. Sadly just two weeks prior Jonathan's brother, Daniel, passed away from pancreatic cancer. In 1998 he was asked to direct the ninth Star Trek film, Star Trek: Insurrection. Following mixed reviews for this film he continued to direct in movies and television, act in a few non-Star Trek roles, and starred in the tenth Star Trek film, Star Trek: Nemesis."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. EP#95: The Puppet Maestro - An Interview with Richard Band
Join Justin and crew as they chat with prolific film composer Richard Band within the Sanctuary of the Strange!Richard Band bio:"Richard Howard Band is an American composer of film and television music. He has scored more than 100 films, including From Beyond which won the award for Best Original Soundtrack at the Sitges - Catalan International Film Festival. His score for Re-Animator was lauded by the magazine Music From the Movies, which said, "Band's music is dark and direct, creating an intense and eerie atmosphere, but always with a humorous touch... Surely, Richard Band is one of the most underrated composers in the film business."By the mid-80's Band was renowned for scoring horror and Sci-Fi films by employing strong, memorable and most often very melodic themes all recorded with orchestra. Films like 'Mutant (1984)', 'The Alchemist (1983)', 'The House on Sorority Row (1983)', 'Troll (1986)' and 'The Day Time Ended (1979)' all feature beautiful and lyrical themes that seem to operate as the antithesis of the genre for which the films were produced. As Band explains in liner notes in some of his soundtrack releases, he believes that "film scores exist to add a third dimension to a two-dimensional medium".As the son of independent film producer, director and writer Albert Band, Richard and his brother Charles Band pursued their father's ambitions in film. Where Charles became a prolific producer, director and distributor, Richard's music and cinematic talent led him into the realm of film composing. Becoming interested in music while living in Europe, Richard toured with various rock groups between 1965 and 1971 before returning to the US. After studying music formally for several years Richard made his scoring debut, alongside Jerry Goldsmith's son Joel Goldsmith, on Compass Films production of 'Laserblast (1978)'. Richard rapidly moved from electronic to orchestral music, resulting in a number of full-bodied, orchestral thematic soundtracks that gave melodic power to a number of movies several of which Charles produced for Empire Pictures, among them The Day Time Ended (1979), Troll (1986), Zone Troopers (1985), ReAnimator (1985), Prison (1987), Ghoulies (1985) and From Beyond (1986).He also brought on famed composer Shirley Walker as conductor and co-orchestrator on his score for Ghost Warrior (performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, 1984) as well as Ghoulies (1985). It was for the Universal 3D release of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983), that Richard composed one of his most epic, and adventurous scores.Beyond Charles' productions, Richard Band showed his diversity with the comedies Lunch Wagon (1981) and Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype (1980), while writing the chillingly melodic score for the slasher favorite The House on Sorority Row (1983). Richard found new acclaim when he teamed with filmmaker Stuart Gordon for the blackly comic Re-Animator (1985), a soundtrack famed for its tribute to the work of Psycho composer Bernard Herrmann. Band's H.P. Lovecraft-themed collaborations with Gordon include the otherworldly tonalities of From Beyond (1986) and the terrifying vengeance of Castle Freak (1995).The director and composer also adapted the work of Edgar Allen Poe with darkly religious inquisition for their adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum (1991), with Band exploring one of Lovecraft's most terrifying works for director Dan O'Bannon on The Resurrected (1991).When the direct-to-video label Full Moon Entertainment was launched, Richard would score some of the label's more ambitious productions, including numerous entries in the continuing PuppetMaster franchise, the twisted terror of Demonic Toys (1992) and Shrunken Heads (1994) with Danny Elfman. The children's' comedies Remote (1993), Prehysteria (1993) and the fantasy Dragonworld (1994) were films released through Paramount Pictures. In the mid 1990's, Richard branched more into television co-scoring the A & E network's documentaries Weapons at War, Most Decorated as well as numerous episodes of Biography and The Civil War Journals. Later in the 90s Band scored multiple episodes of Stargate SG-1 (1997) and Walker, Texas Ranger (1997) His genre notoriety also saw him score three episodes of Masters of Horror, earning him his first Emmy nomination for the Stuart Gordon-directed episode of Dreams in The Witch House (2005).Richard went on to work with the WB network creating promotional music for most of their prime-time shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, Dawson's Creek and Smallville amongst others. Band also scored over 200 animated vignettes for Orchestra for the WB's Kids Network.During the mid 2000, Richard was one among some of the first Hollywood composers to delve into scoring Video Games some of which included Stonekeep, Casper, Waterworld, Star Trek:Judgment Rights, Descent under Mountain, Invictus: In the Shadow of Olympus and Clayfighter.During this period Band continued to score various TV family films and comedies for Paramount such as In the Dog House (2001) My Horrible Year (2002) and Robo-Warriors while still scoring eccentric thrillers for his brother, including Head of the Family (1996), Unlucky Charms (2013), Trophy Heads (2015) and more recently Ravenwolf Towers (2016), a web series for Amazon.More recently Richard scored the horror/comedy Exorcism@60,000 Feet (2019), Necropolis: Legend and The Deep ones (2020) for director Chad Ferrin. Now with over 50 soundtracks to his credit, Richard Band's prolific and stylistic work has made him not only one of the most distinctive composers in the realms of horror and science fiction but arguably include comedy, family films and animation. Band's full-blooded talent remains vibrant to this day."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website.
