The series name was suggested by Stan Lee and the debut story was crafted by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog. The character made additional appearances in Marvel Spotlight #3 and #4 and then graduated to his own eponymous series in September 1972. Werewolf by Night was published for 43 issues and ran through March 1977. Issue #32 (August 1975) contains the first appearance of Moon Knight. Jack Russell co-starred with Tigra in Giant Size Creatures #1 (July 1974), which was the first appearance of Greer Grant as Tigra instead of the Cat. Major Spoilers Podcast #746: Comic Shop: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture
This week on the Major Spoilers Podcast: Stephen talks with Dan Gearino about his upcoming book, Comic Shop: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture.
Comic Shop: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture
by Dan Gearino
The early 1970s saw the birth of the modern comic book shop. Its rise was due in large part to a dynamic entrepreneur, Phil Seuling. His direct market model allowed shops to get comics straight from the publishers, bypassing middlemen. Stores could better customize their offerings and independent publishers could now access national distribution. In this way, shops opened up a space for quirky ideas to gain an audience and helped transform small-press series, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Bone, into media giants.
Comic Shop is the first book to trace the history of these cultural icons. Dan Gearino brings us from their origins to the present day, when the rise of digital platforms has the industry at a crossroads even as sales are robust. He spends a year with stores around the country, with a spotlight on The Laughing Ogre in Columbus, Ohio. Along the way he interviews those who shaped comics retailing from the early days, including many pioneering women; top creators; and shop owners who continue to push the industry in new directions.

TRAVELLERS SEASON ONE
created by : Brad Wright
Thousands of special operatives, sent back in time from the future, are tasked with preventing the collapse of society. These operatives, known as "travelers", take over the body of a 21st century individual via a transfer of consciousness; to minimize impact on the timeline, it is performed moments before the person's recorded time of death. The transfer requires the exact location of the target; smart phones and GPS have made this possible only from the early 21st century onward. Prepared using social media and public records concerning their targets, small teams of travelers must maintain their hosts' pre-existing lives as cover while carrying out missions, dictated by their director in the future, aimed at saving the world from a series of catastrophic events. The Director communicates with travelers via pre-pubescent children used as messengers; unlike adults, any child can safely be taken over for a few minutes and then released from control. The show focuses on one team of five travelers, starting from their transfers of consciousness. As the series progresses, travelers affect the present and future in unanticipated ways.

Secret of the Mystery Legionnaire!
February 1963
w: Jerry Siegel
a: John Forte
With the recent demise of Lightning Lad, the Legion of Super-Heroes begins looking for an adequate replacement to fill the void left by the heroes death. After testing a series of would-be Legionnaires who's powers either turned out to be duds or artificial, the Legion is met by a costumed youngster calling himself Marvel Lad.
Wanting nothing but the best possible candidate to take the late Lightning Lad's place, the Legion puts Marvel Lad on a series of complex tests to see if he stands up to the Legion's values and codes. When Marvel Lad is able to complete all the missions the Legion asks him to reveal the origins of his powers before he is introduced into the group.
The next day Marvel Lad arrives and reveals that he is really Mon-El in disguise. He then reveals to an astonished Legion that Brainiac 5 had developed a new version of serum XY-4 to try and cure Mon-El of his lead poisoning that forced him to reside in the Phantom Zone. To test out if the serum will work, but not get the other Legion's hopes up, Mon-El took on the guise of Marvel Lad and try out for Legion membership, that way if the serum didn't work the Legion wouldn't be disappointed.
Having passed the Legion's tests, Mon-El is welcomed into the Legion as their new member, and Mon-El returns to the Phantom Zone one last time to get the last laugh on the criminals trapped there who have taunted and tormented him during his time living within the Zone.

Meet the lesser of all evils!
Every hero needs a villain. But not all villains are dangerous—some are incompetent, comical, or just . . . weird. In his follow-up to The League of Regrettable Superheroes, author Jon Morris presents over a hundred of the strangest, most stupefying supervillains to ever see print in comics. Meet D-list rogues like Brickbat (choice of weapon: poisonous bricks), Robbing Hood (steals from the poor to give to the rich), Swarm (a crook made of bees; Nazi bees), and many more. Drawing on the entire history of the medium, The Legion of Regrettable Supervillains affectionately and hilariously profiles oddball criminals from the history of comics.

Sun-Boy's Lost Powers!
November 1962
w: Jerry Siegel
a: John Forte
Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Sun-Boy make a trip to Metropolis where the people are unveiling the first of a series of statues in honor of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The first statue is revealed to be of Sun-Boy, who has to use his powers to destroy the statue when it begins to topple, threatening to crush spectators of the event. Flying back to headquarters later, Sun-Boy realizes his powers have run out when he cannot use them to illuminate a city going through a black out.
This prompts Sun-Boy to try and restore his powers, using a similar atomic device that first gave him his powers, and later a volcano, however both attempts fail to restore them. When an entomologist visits the Legions base to gift them with insects from other planets, Sun-Boy's powers briefly come back. Later when Ultra-Boy and Superboys arrive for a scheduled meeting, Sun-Boy asks them to help try to restore his powers using a mirror device and both heroes x-ray visions. This attempt also fails. After giving up, Sun-Boy accepts the fact that his powers are gone, and he is asked to resign from the Legion, he cleans out his locker and supplies and leaves.
Later, while watching the Legion in action, Sun-Boy is visited by Bouncing Boy who has come to take his Legion monitor. Later, Kranyak, a villain which Sun-Boy helped incarcerate, learns of the news about Sun-Boy's powers escapes from prison. Reuniting with his gang, Kranyak attacks Sun-Boy to learn if the stories are true. Learning that they are indeed true, Kranyak tells Sun-Boy that he is going to destroy the other Legionaries. Realizing how to finally restore his powers, Sun-Boy travels to the planet Lurna. There he makes a flame-beast blast him with it's flame breath, this miraculously restores his powers.
Sun-Boy then returns to Earth where he stops Kranyak and his gang from crushing the Legion's base with a giant chunk of ice and easily defeats the crook. After Kranyak has been turned over, Sun-Boy explains to the Legion how his powers were restored: That the only way his powers could be restored would be exposure to sufficient heat energy from living creature that has heat-based powers. He goes on to explain he figured it out when he touched a firefly from the planet Lurna, and so went there find a creature with stronger flame powers. He also explains that the reason why his powers weren't restored by Superboy and Ultra Boy is because they are really robots.
This was figured out while Sun-Boy watched the Legion in action and the two heroes were drawn towards Cosmic Boy whenever he used his magnetic powers. When revealed as robots, the Legion checks out their inner workings and learn that they were sent to the future by Ultra Boy and Superboy, who were busy in the 20th Century celebrating the birthday of Pete Ross. The robots were sent to the future to take their place, and they caught caught in a storm during their travel through the time barrier which caused them to forget they were really robots. With all the loose ends tied up, Sun-Boy is welcomed back into the ranks of the Legion of Super-Heroes. - via DC Wikia

Blood from a Stone: A Cartoon Guide to Tax Reform
While most comic books deal with spandex-suited superheroes saving the day, the protagonists in New York Public Interest Research Group's (NYPIRG) "Blood from a Stone: A Cartoon Guide to Tax Reform," published in 1977, are the everyday taxpayers who are getting shafted by a tax code increasingly riddled with loopholes that directly benefit the rich. The only full-fledged, full-length comic book we know of that’s dedicated to the issue of tax reform, "Blood from a Stone” offers a concise and witty introduction to the history of taxation and the need for progressive tax reform in the United States.
While the comic is now over 36 years old, it remains strikingly prescient considering that tax reform has once again become one of the dominant topics of debate in Washington. In fact, many of the specific tax breaks called out as in need of reform in the comic, such as the preferential rate for capital gains or accelerated depreciation, are on the top of the list of the breaks that still need to go!
We are proud to pluck this comic from its obscurity and to post, for the first time since its original release, a digitized copy of this fascinating comic in its entirety. - via TaxJusticeBlog http://www.taxjusticeblog.org/archive/2013/09/exclusive_vintage_tax_reform_c.php#.WO0iF1MrIUG

The Legion of Super-Traitors!
March 1962
w: Jerry Siegel
a: Curt Swan
After a day of work at Pa Kent's store, Clark is called into action as Superboy, however when attempting to save an air craft from crashing, Superboy suddenly leaves it to crash, forcing Krypto to come to the rescue. Afterward, Superboy suddenly snaps again and is about to throw Krypto into space along the path of a Kryptonite meteor, however he snaps out of it again.
Before Superboy can learn the source of his uncharacteristic behavior, he receives a call from the Legion of Super-Heroes. Going to the designated meeting place, Superboy meets with Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad who have come to Earth to get Superboy's aid updating their records of which Kryptonian criminals had been banished to the Phantom Zone before Krypton's destruction. As Superboy is showing the Legion, Mon-El suddenly appears and warns Superboy that the Legion plans on betraying him and freeing the Phantom Zone criminals. The Legion members then suddenly blast Superboy with special Kryptonite rings that incapacitate the boy of Steel. It's revealed that the Legion are under the control of the Brain Globes of Rambat, who seek to conquer the Earth, but saw Superboy as their only obstacle.
With Superboy defeated, and not considering the Legion members as a threat, the Brain Globes free the Legion and prepare for their conquest. Realizing that the globes had no effect on Krypto prompt the Legion to travel through time and collect Comet the Super-horse, Streaky the Super-cat, and Beppo the Super-monkey to form the Legion of Super-Pets. With the aid of the Super-Pets, the Legion of Super-Heroes are able to defeat the Brain Globes and force them to abandon their goals of conquest. With the globes defeated, the Super-Pets return to their respective eras and Saturn Girl revives Superboy and informs him that she cannot tell him how they defeated the Brain Globes. She then sends Superboy to destroy the device the Brain Globes intended to use to move the Earth. Afterward, Superboy returns home to inform his family what came over him that day and his plan to clear things up with the authorities as well. - via DC Wikia

Supergirl's Greatest Challenge
April 1962
w: Jerry Siegel
a: Jim Mooney
After spending time at her friend Margie's house where her Superman fan-club has Lois Lane over as a guest visitor, Supergirl (as Linda Lee Danvers) returns home. There she is told by Fred Danvers that the sheriff is about to blow up the tree stump which hides the secret exit to their home which Supergirl uses to leave unseen. Supergirl rushes off to prevent the entrance from being seen. Returning home once more she gets a signal from the Legion of Super-Heroes to visit them in the 30th Century.
At first she wonders why the Legion called her because they all appear to be busy doing other things, however she strangely finds them at the Legion's headquarters. The Legion quickly have her board their ship to go out into space to stop the Positive Man. Supergirl succeeds in doing so by attracting a negative creature from space to cause the two to explode.
Returning to Earth, the Legion members find that their super-powers no longer work, and in order to avoid a crime spree, Supergirl with the help of Whizzy (the future descendant of her super-cat Streaky) help make it appear as though the Legion still has their super-powers by helping them out behind the scenes.
However, this is all a trick, and the "Legion" members are really members of the Chameleon men, alien shape changers who are posing as the Legion. With Supergirl's guard down, they use a Phantom Zone projector to shunt both Supergirl and Whizzy into the Phantom Zone. Using Whizzy's telepathic abilities, they gain the aid of the owner of an android factory they had saved earlier to send in an android resembling the Chameleon Men to enter the Legion base and free Supergirl and Whizzy.
Supergirl then quickly defeats the Chameleon Men, trapping them in a transparent dome, and freeing the other Legion members. After she says goodbye to the Legion and Whizzy and returns to her own time and relates to the story to Streaky. - via DC Wikia

Supergirl's Three Super Girl-Friends
May 1961
Writer: Jerry Siegel
Artist: Jim Mooney
While spending time with the other girls in the orphanage in her civilian guise of Linda Lee, Supergirl becomes upset that she doesn't have any female friends whom she can confide in. Switching to her Supergirl identity when she receives a call, she meets Saturn Girl of the Legion of Super-Heroes, along with two other newer Legion members, Phantom Girl and Triplicate Girl who have come to the 20th Century to cheer Supergirl up.
They take her back to the 30th Century and invite her to join the Legion, and introduce her to the other new members: Shrinking Violet, Sun Boy, Bouncing Boy, and Brainiac 5 -- The latter being the descendant of Superman's old foe Brainiac. After partaking in the Legion of Super-Heroes' parade, Supergirl prepares to return to her own time, when Brainiac 5 asks her to stay and be his girlfriend. Supergirl politely declines because she has to return to her own time.
Back in the 20th century, Supergirl is contacted by Lori Lemaris and Jerro to test out a new force field they hope will protect Supergirl from harmful Kryptonite rays. The device works, however when Supergirl tries to throw the Kryptonite into space she scares off Krypto. burying the Kryptonite on a distant planet and returning home, Supergirl's force field device is damaged by a meteor and Lori is unable to repair it. When Supergirl returns to the orphanage as Linda Lee, the girls tease her when she is forced to lie to them and tell them she has no boyfriend, when in reality she has two admirers in both Brainiac 5, and Jerro. - via DC Wikia
Superboy #89
Superboy's Big Brother
June 1961
Writer: Robert Bernstein
Artist: George Papp
While out with Ma and Pa Kent, Clark notices a rocket crashing to Earth. Investigating it as Superboy, the Boy of Steel is shocked to find an occupant inside that has a star chart and a medallion around his neck from Jor-El, his own father, about his apparent son. Believing that this person is a previously unknown and long lost brother, Superboy is disappointed to find that the occupant has amnesia. Taking him in with the Kents, they decide to name him Mon-El, based partially on the day of the week he landed on Earth (Monday) and on Kryptonian names. Pa Kent also sets Mon-El up with a civilian guise of Bob Cobb so that Mon-El can assume a civilian life in Smallville, as a brush salesman.
However, Superboy beings to get suspicious of Mon-El's true nature, and begins to doubt his origins when he realizes the buckle on Mon-El's belt is not made of any Kryptonian metal, and Krypto doesn't recognize Mon-El. As a final test, Superboy tries to expose Mon-El to Kryptonite as the boy sleeps and is shocked that it has no effect.
The next day, after Mon-El tries to show up Clark for Lana Lang's affections, Superboy decides to trick Mon-El into "revealing" himself by orchestrating a Kryptonite meteor hoax while they're playing. To do so, Superboy paints lead meteors to resemble Kryptonite and throws them into space so that they land on Earth at the right time. Superboy is shocked to find that Mon-El is effected by the lead meteors just as Superboy would have been effected by real Kryptonite. This causes Mon-El's memories to return, and he reveals that his real name is Lar Grand, who was from the planet Daxam, and landed on Krypton just before it's destruction and befriended Jor-El before departing the planet, and that the crash really did cause him to have amnesia. As lead being the Daxarian's weakness, Mon-El is about to die, however Superboy comes up with a solution to save Mon-El's life, by sending him to the Phantom Zone until he can find a cure for Mon-El's lead poisoning. - via DC Wikia

March: Book Three
John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell
By Fall 1963, the Civil Rights Movement is an undeniable keystone of the national conversation, and as chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, John Lewis is right in the thick of it. With the stakes continuing to rise, white supremacists intensify their opposition through government obstruction and civilian terrorist attacks, a supportive president is assassinated, and African-Americans across the South are still blatantly prohibited from voting. To carry out their nonviolent revolution, Lewis and an army of young activists launch a series of innovative projects, including the Freedom Vote, Mississippi Freedom Summer, and a pitched battle for the soul of the Democratic Party waged live on national television.

OTTO BINDER: THE LIFE AND WORK OF A COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION VISIONARY
by Bill Schelly
Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary chronicles the career of Otto Binder, from pulp magazine author to writer of Supergirl, Captain Marvel, and Superman comics. As the originator of the first sentient robot in literature ("I, Robot," published in Amazing Stories in 1939 and predating Isaac Asimov's collection of the same name), Binder's effect on science fiction was profound. Within the world of comic books, he created or co-created much of the Superman universe, including Smallville; Krypto, Superboy's dog; Supergirl; and the villain Braniac. Binder is also credited with writing many of the first "Bizarro" storylines for DC Comics, as well as for being the main writer for the Captain Marvel comics. In later years, Binder expanded from comic books into pure science writing, publishing dozens of books and articles on the subject of satellites and space travel as well as UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Comic book historian Bill Schelly tells the tale of Otto Binder through comic panels, personal letters, and interviews with Binder's own family and friends. Schelly weaves together Binder's professional successes and personal tragedies, including the death of Binder's only daughter and his wife's struggle with mental illness. A touching and human story, Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary is a biography that is both meticulously researched and beautifully told, keeping alive Binder's spirit of scientific curiosity and whimsy.
