Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus Volume 1
After co-creating comic book heroes including The Fantastic Four and The Hulk, legendary writer/artist Jack Kirby came to DC Comics in 1970 to write and illustrate four interlocking series known collectively as “The Fourth World.”
Now, for the first time, DC collects these four series — THE NEW GODS, THE FOREVER PEOPLE, MISTER MIRACLE and SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN — in chronological order as they originally appeared. These comics spanned galaxies, from the streets of Metropolis to the far-flung worlds of New Genesis and Apokolips, as cosmic-powered heroes and villains struggled for supremacy.
Volume 1 features the debuts of Orion of the New Gods, the evil Darkseid, super-escape artist Mister Miracle and many others. It also features numerous appearances by Superman.

Two television series arrived in the late ’70s to vie for our attention, and capitalize on the Star Wars craze.

The Incredibles on Blu-Ray DVD
THE INCREDIBLES follows the adventures of a family of former superheroes who are rediscovering the true source of their powers—in one another. Once one of the world’s top masked crime fighters, Bob Parr (a.k.a. Mr. Incredible) fought evil and saved lives on a daily basis. But 15 years later, he and his wife Helen (the former Elastigirl) have been forced to take on civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs. Today they, and all superheroes, live as mere mortals. Bob and Helen lead all- too-ordinary lives with their children, Violet and Dashiell “Dash” Parr, who go out of their way to appear “normal,” and new baby Jack-Jack As a clock-punching insurance man, the only thing Bob fights these days is boredom and a bulging waistline. Itching for action, the sidelined superhero gets his chance when a mysterious communication summons him to a remote island for a top-secret assignment. Now, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the family must come together and once again find the fantastic in their family life.

Tag and Bink are Dead
Tag and Bink are the main characters in a series of comic books spoofing Star Wars. Tag is from the planet Corellia and Bink is from Alderaan. The two first meet when they are found to have Force potential. The comics illustrate how these two Jedi in training haphazardly cause all the pivotal events in the Star Wars universe. Like other Star Wars comics, Tag and Bink is published by Dark Horse Comics.

Jake Gallo is an angry young man, frustrated at his lack of employment and easily provoked by perceived slights. It is not until we are several pages into the book that we discover that he is also a talking, thinking chicken. He is no anomaly; decades earlier, all of chickenkind suddenly gained intelligence and speech; by the 2000s they are legally human. Jake’s father’s illness and subsequent death lead Jake to read his father’s account of the early days after the change; this in turn allows Alanguilan to show the reader the often horrific sequence of events that followed chickenkind’s sudden elevation to sapience. Used to seeing chickens as food or worse, humans are not shown at their best as they react, often violently, to this sudden alteration of the natural order.

Maus II
Spiegelman’s Maus, A Survivor’s Tale (Pantheon, 1987) was a breakthrough, a comic book that gained widespread mainstream attention. The primary story of that book and of this sequel is the experience of Spiegelman’s father, Vladek, a Polish Jew who survived the concentration camps of Nazi Germany during World War II. This story is framed by Spiegelman’s getting the story from Vladek, which is in turn framed by Spiegelman’s working on the book after his father’s death and suffering the attendant anxiety and guilt, the ambivalence over the success of the first volume, and the difficulties of his “funny-animal” metaphor. (In both books, he draws the char acters as anthropomorphic animals– Jews are mice, Poles pigs, Germans cats, Americans dogs, and French frogs.) The interconnections and complex characterizations are engrossing, as are the vivid personal accounts of living in the camps. Maus and Maus . . . II are two of the most important works of comic art ever published.

But it does bring up an interesting question; If Gatoroid and Sharktopus were put in a tank to fight it out to the death, who would win?

Maus
Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, by Art Spiegelman, is a biography of the author’s father, Vladek Spiegelman, a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor. It alternates between descriptions of Vladek’s life in Poland before and during the Second World War and Vladek’s later life in the Rego Park neighborhood of New York City. The work is a graphic narrative in which Jews are depicted as mice, while Germans are depicted as cats. It is the only comic book ever to have won a Pulitzer Prize.

I Kill Giants
It’s a story about a girl who’s a bit of an outsider – she’s smart-assed and funny, but totally in our geekland: she’s obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons, she doesn’t have a lot of friends, she’s a bit of a social misfit. She’s taken her fantasy life a little far, and really only talks about giants to people. She’s convinced that giants are real and giants are coming, and it’s her responsibility to stop them when they show up. This weird little fantasy life that she’s going has started seeping into her real life, and as we see things from her point of view, we see that she sees pixies and she sees signs in the clouds and other things that might be telling her that bad things might be coming.

The year is 1108 in the official calendar of the Pajan Empire. Far from the fields of battle, Okko the ronin heads a small group of demon hunters, wandering the realms of Empire. He is accompanied by Noburo, a mysterious giant who hides his face behind a red oni mask, and the whimsical monk Noshin, the saké lover with the power to summon and commune with the spirits of nature.
The young fisherman Tikku enlists the group’s help in finding his sister, the geisha Little Carp, who was kidnapped by pirates. But the quest will have a price, and will lead our four heroes much farther afield than they’d ever imagined…

Saga of the Swamp Thing Volume 1
From 1983 through 1987, a young British writer named Alan Moore revolutionized the American comic book. His groundbreaking tenure on DC Comics’ SWAMP THING set new standards for graphic storytelling and touched off a revolution in the medium that is still expanding today. Building on the title’s framework of gothic horror with a remarkably intuitive narrative style and an unprecedented depth of characterization, Moore’s vision was realized through the hauntingly beautiful artwork of such collaborators as Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, Dan Day and Rick Veitch. The result is one of comics’ most enduring masterpieces.
Now, for the first time, Moore’s entire run — including his never-before-reprinted debut issue — is available in archival hardcover editions. This first volume, collecting issues 20-27 of THE SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING, also features a foreword by famed horror author Ramsey Campbell and a new introduction by Swamp Thing co-creator and original series editor Len Wein.

MAJOR SPOILERS POLL OF THE WEEK
One of the Faithful Spoilerites sent in this suggestion for the poll of the week – Animals Fighting! Now while we don’t condone dog fights, cock fights, or other forms of animal cruelty, when the animals in question are fictional, and are already maiming and killing, it seems reasonable enough to toss the little buggers in the ring and let them go at it.
Entering the ring this week are Rocket Raccoon and Dex-Starr!

MAJOR SPOILERS POLL OF THE WEEK
This week, Dr. Peter Coogan of the Institute for Comic Studies stopped by and dropped off this week’s Poll of the Week the pits the tag team of John Lennon and Paul McCartney against Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Both these teams of creators worked in the 1960s and produced a solid body of work that laid the groundwork for much popular culture that came after them, and in both pairs each member seems to have brought the best in the other member. Think of McCartney’s work in Wings vs. his work in the Beatles, or Kirby’s solo work–neither accomplished alone what he accomplished while working with his partner (the same is true of Lee and probably Lennon too). But which team is better, more influential, which raised their chosen genre higher relative to what it was when they started and in comparison with others, etc.

MAJOR SPOILERS DISCUSSION: Tales of Beanworld Volume 1
Tales of the Beanworld is an independently published comic book, created by Larry Marder. Beanworld features stories about the life and times of the Beans, minimalistic characters which Marder has been drawing since childhood. The stories borrow concepts from various world mythologies, popular concepts of ecology, and pop culture.
The first issue was published in 1985, and the series ran 21 issues until 1993. The first four issues were printed independently (under the imprint The Beanworld Press. Starting with issue five, the title was released by Eclipse Comics. A total of four book collections were released, reprinting issues #1-16.
The series was revived in February 2009 and is now published by Dark Horse Comics in deluxe hardcover editions. Wahoolazuma (February, 2009) reprinted the first nine issues. The second volume, A Gift Comes!, came out in July, 2009, reprinting the remaining twelve. A new one-shot comic came out in December, 2008. A third hardcover volume, Remember Here When You Are There!, came out in November, 2009, with all new material. Marder says that this completes the “Springtime” cycle of Beanworld stories. Further volumes are planned.

DC Comics had a great idea a few years ago where it would introduce a new line of comics under the All-Star banner and feature many of their characters in a whole new light. First out of the gate were the powerhouse duo of All-Star Superman (Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely) and All-Star Batman and Robin (Frank Miller and Jim Lee). Sounds like a sure fire hit, right? While Morrison did complete his Superman maxi-series, Miller and Lee floundered in getting their ASBAR out on time. But where not here to discuss release dates, and/or failures. MAJOR SPOILERS DISCUSSION: The Brat Pack
Rick Veitch’s fierce and darkly comic BRATPACK has long been considered a subterranean classic of the genre. Now, at last, the notorious graphic novel that made the mainstream safe for totally twisted superhero satires is available in a new KING HELL trade paperback edition! Veitch’s no-holds-barred dissection of the hoary old ‘kid sidekick’ phenomena is as harrowing as it is hilarious; subversively subtle yet completely over the top. BRATPACK is an edgy and unforgettable dance macabre that is a must for every graphic novel collection. With an introduction by Neil Gaiman. BRATPACK is a companion volume to Rick Veitch’s THE MAXIMORTAL and was nominated for “Best Graphic Album” in the Eisner Awards in 1995.
