Go with your gut: why food isn’t just fuel with Professor Tim Spector, OBE

Go with your gut: why food isn’t just fuel with Tim Spector Professor Tim Spector OBE is an expert on nutrition and gut health. He has been ranked in the top 1% globally for most-cited scientists, and in March 2020 he launched what is now the world’s largest ongoing study: the ZOE covid symptom study app. Since then he has gained more than 4 million users recording their daily symptoms and helped millions improve their health. Diving deep into the world of gut health this week, Tim and I discuss how the foods we eat play a key role in our health. We talk about personalised nutrition and how you can optimise your health.  We cover how our nutrition can help increase our longevity and what drugs are on the horizon here too. I’m so honoured to speak to Tim in this episode, as he is one of the world’s top scientists in his field. Grab a pen and get ready to make some notes! We explore how the ZOE data can inform our treatment of chronic disease, the foods that Tim swears by, and how we can all improve our gut health with nutrition. From Premier League to premier health: Thomas 'Hal' Robson-Kanu's route to success

From Premier League to premier health: Thomas 'Hal' Robson-Kanu's route to success

The food we eat isn’t always the magic bullet, but if we don’t eat correctly it can cause destructive effects. Signed at the age of 15 to a professional football contract, Thomas ‘Hal’ Robson-Kanu struggled with persistent injuries in the subsequent years. Robson-Kanu played in the premier league, and internationally for Wales. He battled with continuous injuries, while he watched other players his age progress. After two years of being in and out of hospital, battling serious injuries and hitting dead ends with the healing process, he and his father decided to tackle it themselves. As a nutritionist, I’m forever amazed by the lack of awareness and education around nutrition in the sporting world. Nutrition is one of the main foundation and pillars of performance. In today’s episode: we explore just how far nutrition can go in its healing power. How Liz Earle built one of the UK's biggest independent beauty brands

How Liz Earle built one of the UK's biggest independent beauty brands

Liz Earle has revolutionised the wellbeing sector. Her brand has forever changed the connection between beauty and health. I had the privilege of sitting down with Liz to discuss her journey to becoming an entrepeneur in the early days, juggling motherhood, and coming full circle to focusing on her brand and the wellbeing side.  I remember growing up with my Mum using Liz Earle products, and I always remember the emphasis on natural beauty care that they brought, for the first time, to the centre stage.  For more than thirty years, Liz has remained a respected and award-winning authority in the world of beauty, natural nutrition, health and wellbeing. She is dedicated to sharing her knowledge as a broadcaster (having started her TV career on ITV’s This Morning in 1989, she’s still a contributor to the show), writer and trusted household name, as well as being a best-selling author with a range of lifestyle titles and a multi-brand founder.  Liz opens up about the trials and the tribulations of building a beauty empire, and how she got to where she is today. Liz Earle is a champion of women’s health, media influencer, author of 36 books, TV presenter, podcast host and charity-founder. She is also on a mission to help women celebrate every stage of their lives – especially that all-important second half.  This week's sponsor: Hu Kitchen, a brand who I first fell in love with when I lived in Manhattan, New York. If you haven’t heard of HU before, they are relatively new to the UK, bringing their chocolate goodness here in the last 6 months.  If you love chocolate like me - you are in for a treat! It's time to tell my story, Founder and Host Sarah Ann Macklin

It's time to tell my story, Founder and Host Sarah Ann Macklin

Across 7 seasons, I've had the privilege and the honour of talking to some amazing people, from so many different fields and walks of life.  They come on the podcast to share their story, and so I thought it was time to share mine. I started Live Well Be Well to encourage us to share and communicate with each other, and I hope that by sharing my story with you, I'll encourage you to do the same. On today's episode, I open up about my childhood, my career, how I got into modelling and the highs and lows of that journey, my battles with health and in particular, my experiences with loneliness.  The theme of Mental Health Week is loneliness, so I thought it was timely to tell you about my own encounters with this often overlooked issue.  It was slightly terrifying to record this, I have to be honest - I've been contemplating whether to record it, yet alone put it out and go live, but unless we start talking about our own personal stories, we never come together to help one another.  For season 8 of the show I've also introduced a new exciting element: video! I'll be interviewing our guests live on video to complement the podcast, so if you prefer watching a vlog to listening to the show, or you want to have both, you now can. Head over to my YouTube channel Be Well Collective to watch today's video.  I can't wait to share this with you, so I hope you enjoy. #LiveWellBeWell #BeWellTogether Host: @sarahannmacklin | www.sarahannmacklin.com Mental Health: @be_well_collective | www.bewellcollective.co.uk YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCASEE6WVp31E3FNeM-Mk_bw  Mentioned in this episode:*** Join the Live Well Be Well Club to listen to ad-free, and bonus episodes Tap 'Try Free' on Apple Podcasts. http://apple.co/livewellbewell

How can you be your most authentic self with Samantha Clarke

How can you be your most authentic self with Samantha Clarke

Everyone wants to be authentic. You want to be true to yourself, not a slavish follower of social expectations. You want to “live your best life,” pursuing your particular desires, rather than falling in line with whatever everyone else thinks happiness requires. Studies have even shown that feelings of authenticity can go hand in hand with numerous psychological and social benefits: higher self-esteem, greater well-being, better romantic relationships and enhanced work performance. In today's episode I speak to changemaker and happiness consultant Samantha Clarke, who is on a mission to build robust changemakers out of the next generation of leaders. Her philosophies and neuroscience, therapeutic and positive psychology led processes instil resilience, deep wellbeing and strength to give her clients the power, intentionality and courage to do important work in the world. The power of plant based eating with Dr Gemma Newman

The power of plant based eating with Dr Gemma Newman

One of the top questions I am asked as a nutritionist is, ‘what does the perfect diet look like?” My answer is, there is not a perfect diet but there will be elements of a balanced approach which will work for you as an individual. One thing we can be certain of is that a balanced and whole food approach to nutrition can help reduce and prevent non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. A movement towards plant based eating continues to grow, with record breaking numbers of 605,000 individuals taking part in Veganuary this year.  The power of plants is starting to take centre stage and to help me explore this conversation futher I speak to Dr Gemma Newman, author of Plant Power Doctor - a prescription for a healthier you.   Four Sigmatic’s mushroom coffee is real organic, Fair-Trade coffee, with Lion’s Mane mushroom for productivity, and Chaga mushroom for immune support. How to unwire perfectionism with flexible thinking with Poppy Jamie

How to unwire perfectionism with flexible thinking with Poppy Jamie

Why do we need to think differently? How are our thinking styles harming our health? We can set the illusion with ourselves that everything is fine with material success, but this illusion can come at a high cost in our mental health, resulting in low self-esteem, insecurity and anxiety.  We are often most terrified of the thing that makes us the most human, the ability to feel. We’ve created our own patterns through learnt behaviours of how we should perform, think and feel, yet is this pattern really making us happy? To help me delve into this conversation a little further, I speak with Poppy Jamie who is one of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, podcast hosts and speakers in the mental wellbeing and mindfulness space. Poppy is on a mission to democratise conversation and tools for emotional and mental health and she shares more on this in today’s episode.   Show notes: Host: @sarahannmacklin | www.sarahannmacklin.com Mental Health: @be_well_collective | www.bewellcollective.co.uk  Guest: Poppy Jamie @poppyjamie | https://happynotperfect.com/ | Buy Poppy's book at https://amzn.to/36DFS2R  Mentioned in this episode:*** Join the Live Well Be Well Club to listen to ad-free, and bonus episodes Tap 'Try Free' on Apple Podcasts. http://apple.co/livewellbewell

Psychedelic Renaissance: the emerging drug boom in mental health

Psychedelic Renaissance: the emerging drug boom in mental health

Psychedelic therapy is understood to harness a therapeutic window opened up by the brain effects of the drugs to facilitate insight and emotional release and, with psychotherapeutic support, a subsequent healthy revision of outlook and lifestyle. In America, Oregon is legalizing mushrooms. Ketamine can be delivered to your home and people are micro dosing LSD to treat pandemic-related anxiety. Dr Martin Williams is a research fellow formerly in pharmaceutical sciences and now in psychology at Monash University. His interests in psychology and pharmacology have led him towards the multidisciplinary study of psychoactive compounds and their roles in contemporary society. In today’s episode, we explore the psychedelic renaissance and how we can harness these to treat and support  mental health.  Show Notes: Four Sigmatic’s mushroom coffee is real organic, Fair-Trade coffee, with Lion’s Mane mushroom for productivity, and Chaga mushroom for immune support. Acceptance is the ability to unconditionally value all parts of who you are. That means you acknowledge all of yourself, the good parts and the things that need improvement. For most of us, self-acceptance can be hard. We tend to be critical of ourselves, but there are a number of ways to learn to accept yourself and your life. It all begins with your state of mind. The truth behind CBD and if it really works with Dr Julie Moltke

It is estimated that two billion euro’s a year is the size of the European market of CBD. Already, the plant extract is being added to cheeseburgers, toothpicks and breath sprays. The World Health Organisation reports “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential….To date, there is no evidence of public health problems associated the use of pure CBD”.  Part of CBD’s popularity is that it purports to be “nonpsychoactive,” and that consumers can reap health benefits from the plant without the high (or the midnight pizza munchies).  In today's episode we explore the facts and science surrounding the trendy CBD market. Dr Julie Moltke is a peer-reviewed clinical researcher and industry consultant with a focus on medicinal cannabis and holistic health. Dr Julie Moltke prescribes medicinal cannabis at Horsted Institute in Denmark and works in child psychiatry in Sweden. How can we have a healthy relationship with social media, with Niomi Smart

There are nearly 3.5billion active social media users, and every 6.4 seconds a new account has been created. Many of us use our smartphones as companions. We update our friends, work colleagues and acquaintances on our daily movements and memorable moments in our lives.  At its core, social media is a powerful communication tool that has changed how individuals interact with one another. It speeds up how people exchange and share information, thoughts, and ideas across virtual networks. However, social media does have downsides. Some evidence suggests that its use in particular, its overuse — can negatively affect mental health in numerous ways. In today's episode I speak to Niomi Smart, content creator, vlogger and the founder of Smart Skin. Meditation instead of Medication with Cornelius O'Shaughnessy

Meditation instead of Medication with Cornelius O'Shaughnessy

Meditation is a word we hear a lot today to help calm our minds and deal with daily stressors, but many of us still struggle to grasp it. How powerful is meditation and how can we take the first step? To kick off the first episode of series six, I invited Be Well Collective's meditation expert Cornelius O'Shaughnessy, to take us through his personal journey and a guided meditation.  Having suffered from severe treatment-resistant depression and anxiety since he was 15, Cornelius began to explore alternative ways at managing the condition. He learnt some meditation techniques and they helped to a degree, but they didn’t seem to resolve his depression. It wasn’t until Cornelius began to travel to India and explore the ancient teachings about the mind that were traditionally taught alongside the practice that my state of mind began to shift in a meaningful way. After some years of searching, he came across a very powerful and ancient set of teachings that brought the practice to a new level. Shortly afterwards Cornelius depression and anxiety came to an end. I then began to teach others what I have learned. This episode is finished on a 10 minute guided meditation by Cornelius.  Show notes: Host: @sarahannmacklin | www.sarahannmacklin.com Be Well Collective: @be_well_collective | www.bewellcollective.co.uk Cornelius: @cornelius_nonduality    Mentioned in this episode:*** Join the Live Well Be Well Club to listen to ad-free, and bonus episodes Tap 'Try Free' on Apple Podcasts. http://apple.co/livewellbewell

Are we being fooled by food labels with Jenny Rosborough

We all believe we have a choice when it comes to choosing healthy food options, but do we really? Is our choice merely a small selection of what it chosen to be put in front of our eyes in the limited selection available to us? Seducing claims and health halos such as ‘natural’, ‘superfood’ and ‘low fat’ lead many of us to overestimate how healthy a food is, and it can discourage us to look at the nutritional labelling. Many of us drink to relax and socialise, but are we aware of how much we are drinking on a daily basis and what affects it may be having on our health?  During January this year, alcohol sales surged by 30%. This significant jump in sales has been linked to stress, boredom, anxiety and loneliness caused by the pandemic. When we look at our relationship with alcohol, do we consider the health implications regarding our physical and mental health? What are the health harms linked to drinking alcohol? At what point does it become a problem? The word alcoholic may not directly resonate with many people,  but does that imply that you have a healthy relationship with it?  In this weeks episode I speak with Nick Hickmott, Early Intervention Lead at drug, alcohol and mental health charity, We Are With You. How to eat sustainability with dietitian Louise Symington

How can we achieve a dietary intake which protects our health and our planet at the same time? One that is affordable and equitable? When we look at food sustainability, we need to include protecting populations from non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, producing our food with fewer resources, such as land, water and fuel to help feed to fast growing population. And it doesn't stop there, ethical food labelling can be a minefield of who to trust and not to trust.  To help me uncover this important topic, I speak to registered dietitian Louise Symington, aka the sustainable dietitian. With over 15 years experience, Louise has advised the Green Food Project and worked in food policy and worked with Sustain to provide schools and local authorities on providing good food quality. Why the future of our planet relies on the children of today with George Lamb

Why the future of our planet relies on the children of today with George Lamb

Food is complex. It doesn't just effect our health and general wellbeing, it also effects how we farm, how accessible it is to us and the affordability as well as political issues such as the recent agriculture bill. Yet, how could we help create a more sustainable and attainable food system? Will this begin with the children of today?  George Lamb shares his personal story of leaving his celebrity life, after a realisation that it was no longer serving him.  Growing an innate interest in how he could help shape a healthy world, his path lead him into education. Today he has created GROW. GROW works in schools and communities to promote mental well-being, physical health and a more hands-on relationship with the natural world.  Mentioned in this episode:*** Join the Live Well Be Well Club to listen to ad-free, and bonus episodes Tap 'Try Free' on Apple Podcasts. http://apple.co/livewellbewell

Breast cancer, diet and health inequalities

Breast cancer, diet and health inequalities

With 2.5 million in the UK living with cancer, and breast cancer is the number one cancer for women, affecting 1 in 8 women in the UK. Yet, with 23% of breast cancers preventable in the UK, what could we be eating more and less of to help reduce our risk? Why is it that black women have the poorest health outcomes when it comes to breast cancer? Why are health inequalities still so prevalent in 2020? What do we need to change and how can we educate ourselves more on these health inequalities? To help me explore this further, I speak to Toral Shah, chef and nutritional scientist with a BSc in Cell Biology from UCL and an MSc in Nutritional Medicine from the University of Surrey, as well as the founder of Urban Kitchen.  - Toral asked me to apologised for abbreviating her name to Tor at the end of the podcast.  Show notes and resources   Stats on health inequalities along with the link to the feminist paper re WHO.  https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30110-0/fulltext https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)32069-9/fulltext Anti-racism resources: https://www.theurbankitchen.co.uk/pages/anti-racism-resources Mentioned in this episode:*** Join the Live Well Be Well Club to listen to ad-free, and bonus episodes Tap 'Try Free' on Apple Podcasts. http://apple.co/livewellbewell

Henry Holland and Imposter syndrome

Henry Holland and Imposter syndrome

A 2019 study from Nottingham university claims that 7 in 10 workers in the UK had suffered from complex ‘imposter’ feelings that can sabotage careers and harm our mental health. Sadly, 7 in 10 (71 percent) of those who have found themselves furloughed, laid off, or made redundant this year are experiencing this feeling.  In this weeks episode, I speak to Henry Holland, legendary British fashion designer. Henry opens up about his struggles with imposter syndrome, why men need to talk more about mental wellbeing and how he succumbed to drastic dieting due to the pressures of body image.  Mentioned in this episode:*** Join the Live Well Be Well Club to listen to ad-free, and bonus episodes Tap 'Try Free' on Apple Podcasts. http://apple.co/livewellbewell

An Agents View: Live Episode at Be Well Summit with Model Agent Karen Diamond from Models 1

An Agents View: Live Episode at Be Well Summit with Model Agent Karen Diamond from Models 1

It is not very often that we get to hear an agents view on models health. Many times people compare models to athletes. Needing to be strict with their diets and vigorous exercise regime, a short career in a high pressured environment. Mental health is known to suffer from daily comparisons of high standards and rejection. In the last of the LFW special season, I speak to Karen Dimond, owner and director of Models 1, a leading modelling agency in the heart of London. Karen speaks very openly acknowledging the press that agents get is absolutely dreadful - especially during London Fashion Week because there's a huge spotlight on models. Highlighting there's always going to be a front page picture of a slim model who has been shot at an angle to look incredibly thin, which then becomes something which is being celebrated, but the reality is you do have to be strong and healthy to be a model.
