You can find episodes 63 and 64 on podcast platforms as well as on LinkedIn in the Events Section on my profile page: LinkedIn Episode 63I think it is important to talk about words for several reasons - here are just a few data soundbites:* Words are only 7% of communication - yes and no - they can also be seen as 100% and very reliable* Life and Death are in the power of the tongue rings true and you can see it in both placebos and nocebos* Priming heavily influences our response in a given stimulus-response cycleIn this episode, I will be talking about words in the context of Priming. Priming is part of the pre-stimulus stage but it can extend from days before and right up to seconds before a stimulus. Priming, like cognitive biases, is a heuristic and is there to help us speed up repetitive tasks or initiatives.I maintain that was probably more helpful in the agricultural era when the world a 50-year-old experienced was not that much unlike the world when they were 7. Today, when there is volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity all around us priming can become a liability.I will zero in on how we are primed by the words of others and also our own words. We may not be able to control what others say but being aware of the effects can level the playing field. The Unseen Power of Words Part 2 | Ep. 64
Last week I introduced an extended view of the typical stimulus-response cycle. Attendees were asked to come up with a belief that was holding them back - more specifically - a belief or it could be a story that has kept them from going after. Something along the lines of if you do leap you will experience massive failure or embarrassment. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹: • Identify the genesis of that belief • You will learn a strategy to instantly neutralize a limiting belief • Learn the real Stimulus-Response Cycle and in the process access tools to change habits quicklyPart 3 will then get back to the original topic which is managing self-talk and the words we choose. By the end of the third episode, you will notice differences just from awareness of the nuances. In subsequent episodes I will expand the stimulus - response cycle into the eight steps that occur in about a second and a half. Recap & Introduction to Linked In | Ep. 50
After 49 Episodes I took a break to understand the LinkedIn Platform as it is a more suitable audience for the Life Expansion After 50 Podcast Show. I also explored going Live on both LinkedIn and Facebook. Both have advantages however, given the audience and the way Event Recordings are managed on LinkedIn, I decided that was the best option. I also anticipate LinkedIN will catch up with Facebook on some of the feature rich benefits on that platform. That said, as I get into Live Group Events with Q&A, I may still use Facebook. Rising Above The Line | Ep. 12 (Video Version)
The upper limit is often a conditioned artificial ceiling. There is a lot to unpack but the short version is that through years of conditioning avoiding the cognitive dissonance, the feelings of inadequacy, the dips in Serotonin, and nagging reminders that we probably shouldn’t be going there.The fact is that any goal is going to take you to a place you haven’t been - big goals - like pursuing your purpose and self-actualizing take you to very unfamiliar places. The more unfamiliar, the more the unconscious interprets it as danger.So not only are we fighting the inherent obstacles to any goal worthwhile, we are also fighting against ourselves. We are strong enough to want the goal which makes us a worthy opponent - it’s no wonder these pursuits are full of stress. Two Cognitive Biases - Confirmation Bias & Planning Fallacy Bias
There are a few ways to intervene and stop the unconscious from wreaking havoc or just making your progress slower than it needs to be.* Meditating - especially guided where you rewrite your beliefs and associations* Neuro-Linguistic Programming to interrupt and change limiting patterns* Hypnosis to eradicate old beliefs* Change the relationship between the conscious mind and the unconscious* Education and allowing inaccurate references to dissolveI can’t speak for everyone, but because of my bias toward science and desire to understand how things work, my preferred approach is to use a combination of education, and experimentation as part of the action plan and retrain the unconscious. Much the way it was trained to begin with.This approach has the built-in obstacle of the unconscious standing guard at the entrance of your mind - virtually rejecting anything unfamiliar and therefore deemed dangerous. It’s like asking the unconscious if this new unfamiliar way of doing things is safer than the approach its used all these decades. Of course, it will reject it. The Nocebo Effect
There are two areas I think are unrepresented when it comes to becoming the best possible version of ourselves….and they are related.The first is Priming. Priming is a real challenge because it operates below our consciousness. It is also very pervasive and can completely change a person’s perspective. The book Influence took a good look at this in the 1980’s and now the author’s follow-up book ‘PreSuasion’ really shines a light on how much priming can help us or hurt us.Since it operates at the unconscious level, and the unconscious is so quick compared to the conscious mind, we need tools to mitigate the adverse impact and leverage the beneficial aspects. That’s what the next few videos are about. The second overlooked area is Cognitive Biases. When I was thinking about how to tackle these two topics, I realized that cognitive biases are a result of us being primed. Normally, I like to go to the root but since the unconscious is involved, in this case, I think it is more useful to illustrate the problem and solution in the context of cognitive biases.
