Legends Podcast #607; Marvel Special Presentation Double Feature & 2022 in Review
Twenty Twenty-Two was a milestone year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It completed “Phase Four” with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, boasted the return of Sam Raimi to Marvel with Doctor Strange and Mulitverse of Madness, and saw one of its first core characters receive an unprecedented fourth film with Thor: Love and Thunder. Meanwhile, the television side continued to expand with the moody Moon Knight, the Muslim Ms. Marvel, and the meta She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law further widening the scope of the MCU. (And we got some shorts about Baby Groot, too!) Finally, 2022 brought a completely new release format to the MCU arsenal: the “A Marvel Studios Special Presentation,” a near film-length one-off story, brought to our screens via our Disney+ streaming subscriptions. We got two, in fact, both released to coincide with a particular holiday: Werewolf By Night, timed with Halloween, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, for celebrate that strange thing we Earthlings call Christmas. To wrap up 2022, we’re talking about them both, because (twenty twenty) two is better than one! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #606; Spirited (Christmas Movies)
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has been remade countless times, from Patrick Stewart to Bill Murray to the Muppets. The latest version, starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, incorporates both a meta-take on the source material and musical numbers - because the afterlife is a musical, for some reason. After a one-week theatrical run, this Apple Original Film was released on the tech giant’s streaming service Apple TV+. Now we’re getting in the holiday spirit with Spirited and deciding, in our final film review of 2022, if it belongs on the nice list or if it, in fact, unredeemable. Good afternoon! Legends Podcast #605; Die Hard (Christmas Movies)
Here come the holidays, and if you’ve ever felt trapped in a house with insufferable relatives fighting like terrorists or dodging Grandma’s fruitcake like bullets, might relate to director John McTiernan’s 1988 action movie. Released in July, this Bruce Willis-led shoot-’em-up launched the actor’s movie career and its title became shorthand for a high-concept thriller, “It’s Die Hard on a [blank].” Featuring Alan Rickman in a star-making turn as the exceptional thief Hans Gruber, the movie robbed the sleepy summer box office and became perenial Christmas counterprogramming. It’s not the Yuletide season until Hans Gruber falls off Nakatomi Plaza… and it’s a good day to talk about Die Hard! Legends Podcast #604; The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (20th Anniversary)
The second film of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy hit movie screens twenty years ago this month. While the first was a major hit for New Line Cinema the year before, the success of the second installment was no sure thing. Star Trek: Nemesis was opening the week before, and the Christmas frame included new films from Spike Lee, Martin Scorcese, and Steven Spielberg. There was also the issue of the film's title with its cryptic reference to twin towers just a year after 9/11. Nevertheless, it proved to be a major hit that outperformed the first film on opening weekend and would finish as the highest-grossing release of 2002 - ahead of Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Men in Black, and James Bond. Now we’re headed back to Middle-earth for some more sightseeing - look, there’s Helm Deep! The Dead Marshes! Fangorn Forest! And The Two Towers! Legends Podcast #603; Tenet (Chronovember)
Christopher Nolan has been playing with time in past films like Memento, Inception, and Interstellar and nuclear bombs in his future film Oppenheimer. For his 2020 film, Nolan plays with both big ideas in a story about a temporal cold war with protagonists and antagonists moving forwards and backwards in time to prevent/cause the end of the world. Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kenneth Branagh, the film was highly anticipated but suffered repeated delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When it was finally released as the first major film after the pandemic, a muddy audio mix marred the theatrical experience. The move by Warner Brothers to simultaneously release their entire 2021 film slate on HBO Max strained Nolan’s long-standing relationship with the studio, prompting him to move to rival Universal for his next film. We’re ending Chronovember with Tenet… or is it just the beginning? For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #602; The Call (Chronovember)
South Korean director Lee Chung-hyun adapted the 2011 English-language film The Caller into a 2020 Korean-language thriller starring two of his country’s biggest actresses. The film, written and directed by the then-thrity-year-old former advertising agent, earned multiple awards and nominations despite its pandemic-forced streaming-only release. Focusing on two young women connected across time by a mysterious telephone, the film packs in twists and turns along the way. Now we’re picking up the phone to answer The Call! Director Duncan Jones followed up his breakout hit Moon by developing a time-loop script from The Black List about a solider trying to prevent a terrorist attack. Legends Podcast #599; The Adam Project (Chronovember)
Earlier this year, director Shawn Levy re-teamed with his Free Guy star Ryan Reynolds for a Netflix original film about a young boy who meets his time-traveling-test-pilot older self. Also starring Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldaña, Catherine Keener, and introducing Walker Scobell as a spot-on version of the young Deadpool actor, the film was a hit for Netflix with an estimated 3 million viewers in the first weekend. Legends Podcast #598; The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Legends of Halloween)
In 1975, Tim Curry led a cast of misfits, including Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon, in a big-screen version of a modest musical hit from the London theater scene. Although the Broadway version closed after just fifty performances, the film version is still in limited release today, making it is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. Especially popular around Halloween, many showings involve audience participation. While it’s not particularly spooky, it is another musical, and that’s enough to make Beef jerky. In these dark and difficult times, it’s comforting to know that there’s still a light on over at the Frankenstein place. It’s time for a science-fiction double-feature with The Rocky Horror Picture Show - this is Legends of Halloween! Legends Podcast #597; Event Horizon (Legends of Halloween)
Twenty-five years ago, director Paul W. S. Anderson followed up his video game adaptation Mortal Kombat with an R-rated hard sci-fi scary movie. Starring Sam Neill after Jurassic Park and Laurence Fishburne before The Matrix, this cosmic horror was rushed to release in order to fill a Paramount slot in theaters vacated by James Cameron’s Titanic after the latter film ran overtime in production. While Cameron’s movie about a lost ship would go on to a December release that saw it win 11 Oscars and become the highest-grossing film of all time, Anderson’s search-and-rescue thriller was a commercial and critical failure. While it gained traction on home video and eventually became a cult classic, the studio torched cut footage ruling out the chance of us ever seeing a director’s cut release of what was originally a much scarier, much weirder, and much gorier film. But you don’t need eyes to hear us talk about Event Horizon - this is Legends of Halloween! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #596; Shaun of the Dead (Legends of Halloween)
Director Edgar Wright followed his work on the TV series Spaced with his 2004 “Zom-Rom-Com” movie, which would retroactively become the first installment of the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. Reuniting Spaced stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as two slacker housemates faces with a zombie apocalypse, the film was cult hit and launched the careers of international Wright, Pegg, Frost. As Legends of Halloween shambles along, we’re heading to the Winchester to have a nice cold pint and wait for all of this to blow over while we watch Shaun of the Dead. Legends Podcast #595; Interview With a Vampire (Legends of Halloween)
Anne Rice had enormous success in the 70’s with her best selling novel, which launched a series of books. Its gothic and romantic tale of two men and their adopted daughter was consumed by readers of the occult all over the world. Film rights to the book sold for $150,000, before it was even published. But it took over 10 years for everything to fall into place, before fans got to see the visualization of what only lived in their imaginations. This week AMC launches a series, retelling the story, and told with a more diverse cast. In celebrating October, we break open the vault and travel to 1994 to see if a film starring heartthrobs Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt will die a violent death or rise up from the swamp as we review Neil Jordan’s highly successful telling of, Interview with THE Vampire. 1974 saw the release of such treasured hits like The Godfather Part 2, Death Wish, The Longest Yard, Zardoz and Get Christy Love. But the one film that set audiences rolling in the floor with laughter, was set in 1874, with a star studded cast of comedy gold. This week we round up the horses, suffer gastral disasters, wooden horses, penis jokes and the N-Word more times than I care to count. Legends Podcast #593; Uncharted (Video Game Movies)
Released this February, Venom director Ruben Fleisher’s take on Sony’s hit puzzle platformer video game series was a thing that happened. Starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Victor Sullivan, the film also includes Antonio Banderas as the bad guy, along with actresses Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle. As the first film put out by Sony’s new division Playstation Productions, it was met with underwhelming reviews and seen as poor in comparison to the games that spawned it. However, it was a box office hit that brought in over $400 million worldwide, landing it in the Top 5 video game movies of all time. Now we’re going off the edge of the map to talk about Uncharted! Legends Podcast #592; The Raid: Redemption (Action)
Ten years ago, Gareth Evan’s fists-and-fury action thriller busted out of Indonesian theaters and took the world by storm. Showcasing the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat, the film garnered international recognition for its stars Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim, praise for its frenetic, claustrophobic style, and imitation from films like 2015’s Dredd. Retitled The Raid: Redemption for American cinemas, the film won the Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award at Toronto International Film Festival and spawned a 2014 sequel. Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome… to the 1972 film adaptation of the 1966 Broadway musical set in the last days of Weimar Germany. Starring Liza Minelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey, the film version was directed by choreographer Bob Fosse and won eight Oscars - more than The Godfather. Most people forget that Bob Fosse beat Francis Ford Coppola for Best Director. In fact, the movie won the most Oscars of any film that didn't win Best Picture. Legends Podcast #590; Inside Man: Most Wanted (Aug-Heist)
This week, we’re wrapping up the month with the direct-to-video sequel to one of our first Aug-Heist movies. Spike Lee’s 2006 film Inside Man was his most financially successful film, but a follow-up was stuck in development hell for over a decade, despite strong interest from all parties. However, in 2019, a sequel starring Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn and Sense8’s Aml Ameen was released on streaming and VOD. But with a 35% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Inside Man: Most Wanted was not a breakout hit like the original. As we bid farewell to another year’s month of heist movies, we wonder if this sequel is better than none, or if deserves to be behind bars. Legends Podcast #589; Hard Rain (Aug-Heist)
This week, we’re getting wetter with Mikael Salomon’s natural disaster movie meets heist thriller from 1998. When a group of robbers led by Morgan Freeman try to steal the payout from an armored car in a town evacuated due to flooding, it’s up to rookie driver Christian Slater to stop them. Dumped into theaters in January, this film never got its head above water and bellyflopped at less than $20 million against its $70 million budget. It’s not hard to explain that Hard Rain resurfaced with home video success, but does it still hold water for our hosts? Legends Podcast #588; Point Break (Aug-Heist)
This week, we’re hitting the beach and hanging ten with Kathryn Bigelow’s bank robbery-slash-bromance film from 1991. Keanu Reeves stars as Johnny Utah, an ex-college football quarterback-turned-rookie FBI agent tasked with taking down a gang of thieves led by Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi, the cast also includes Lori Petty, Gary Busey, and John C. McGinley. The movie made bank at the summer box office, earned a cult following, and inspired The Fast and The Furious as well as its own poorly-recieved remake in 2015. Legends Podcast #587; A Fish Called Wanda (Aug-Heist)
This week, we’re going abroad with a bunch of bumbling burglars in Britain in Charles Chricton;s 1988 caper. Starring John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin, this comedy won big at the box office and scored multiple awards, including a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Kline. Following the aftermath of diamond robbery, the film tracks the multiple double-crosses, triple-crosses, and multiple canine assassinations as four crooks and one philandering lawyer try to claim the ill-gotten gains. But does one-third of Monty Python equate comedy gold? Join us we wanda if this limey-crimey filmy-wilmy pulls off the perfect crime as AugHeist just keeps swimming with A Fish Called Wanda! Legends Podcast #586; Thief (Aug-Heist)
This week, we’re paying tribute to James Caan, who passed away last month at age 82, with his starring role in Michael Mann’s 1981 directorial debut. Co-starring Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson and Robert Prosky, the film also features the big screen debuts of Dennis Farina, William Petersen and James Belushi. Mann brought in real-life professional thieves to consult on the film, which was co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and features a synth-heavy soundtrack by German electronica group Tangerine Dream. Playing a jewel thief and safecracker, James Caan often said that, next to The Godfather, this was the movie of which he was proudest. Legends Podcast #585; The World’s End (Westworld Weekly Tie-In)
In 2013, director Edgar Wright concluded his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, all co-written with Simon Pegg, produced by Nira Park, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. Alternatively called the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, the first two films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, riffed on zombie movies and the buddy cop genre. For the final entry in the trilogy, Wright and Pegg tackled sci-fi alien invasion flicks like Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a film centered on five high school mates reuniting for a pub crawl in their hometown. Also featuring Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike, and Pierce Brosnan, the film wraps up the trilogy’s themes of individualism vs. the collective and the dangers of perpetual adolescence. Now we’re bending our elbows and crossing over with Westworld Weekly to follow the boys from their first sip all the way to The World’s End. Legends Podcast #584; Singin’ in the Rain (Musicals)
Seventy years ago, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s famed producer Arthur Freed, the force behind hits like The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis, released one of the most adored movie musicals of all time. Starring Gene Kelly (who co-choreograhped the film’s extensive tap numbers), Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, the film is set at the dawn of “talkie” films and follows the trio through the reinvention of motion pictures. The film largely features songs from previous MGM musical films of the 1929–39 period, with only two original songs written specifically for the movie. The lavish musical was only a modest box office success for MGM, but - and I’m quoting directly from Wikipedia here - “it has since been accorded legendary status by contemporary critics, and is often regarded as the greatest musical film ever made and one of the greatest films ever made.” Now we’re donning our galoshes to watch Singin’ in the Rain and decide for ourselves if it deserves the praise… or fails to make a splash. Legends Podcast #582; The Goonies (Eighties Movies)
In 1985, Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner, and Chris Columbus teamed up to make a movie: The Goonies. That’s it. That’s the intro. The movie was, needless to say, a major hit, and a childhood-defining one for many ‘80s kids - but not Lobster! Starring Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Jonathan Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and John Matuszak, with Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, and Joey Pants, the film was selected into the National Film Registry in 2017 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and one of the many inspirations for Stranger Things. It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. This week, we’re capping off the month with a 2022 release set in the gay resort destsination Fire Island. Written by and starring Joel Kim Booster, the film was directed by Andrew Ahn and features a diverse cast including Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, and Margaret Cho. Originally pitched as a Quibi series (hashtag #QuibiSucks), the movie was picked up by Searchlight, released exclusively on Hulu, and is re-telling of Jane Austen’s classic romance Pride and Prejudice… emphasis on the “Pride.” But does this summer movie fire on all cylinders, or does it miss the ferry? Starring Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terrence Stamp, this movie was a box office hit, won the Oscar for Best Costume Design (werk!), and became an instant cult classic. It also served as the inspiration for a hit musical… and that musical was Mamma Mia. Just kidding, mates, it’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert… crikey! I was just having a laugh. But almost three decades later, is Priscilla still the queen of the screen, or is actually it kind of a drag? Legends Podcast #579; Moonlight (Pride Month)
It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. Next up is Barry Jenkin’s 2016 look at black and queer masculinity throughout three phases of a young man’s life. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, with Mahershalla Ali making history as the first Muslim to win an Oscar (for Best Supporting Actor), but it almost missed its moment to celebrate its Best Picture Award after La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner. Hold on, we’ve just been handled the correct envelope and can confirm that this week’s movie is Moonlight! Legends Podcast #578; Bound (Pride Month)
It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. First up is a lesbian crime caper from 1996 that also happens to be the directorial debut of the Wachowski siblings. Starring Gina Gershon, Jennifer Tilly, and Joe Pantoliano, the film was a critical success and won several festival awards, but it failed to run away with the box office. Nevertheless, the film proved to studio financiers that the Wachowskis could make a movie, and their follow-up was The Matrix. Now it’s time to grab the remote and turn up the volume to figure out what the hell Jennifer Tilly is saying in Bound! Legends Podcast #577; Spider-Man (20th Anniversary)
Twenty years ago, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swung onto the big screen for the first time. A cinematic version of one of Marvel Comics' most prominent heroes had been in development since the '80s, with names like James Cameron attached. Sony ended up with the rights and developed a movie with Darkman director Sam Raimi and Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp. Starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the film was a smash hit, taking in the biggest box office opening of all-time (at that time) and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. It spawned two sequels and a whole Spider-Verse of future films… and memes. You know, I'm something of a podcaster myself, so let's talk about 2002's Spider-Man. Legends Podcast #576; Top Gun (Action Movies)
Before Top Gun: Maverick jets onto movie screens this weekend after a two-year delay, we’re rewatching the original blockbuster that earned Tom Cruise his action hero wings. Co-starring Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, and Tom Skerrit, it was the highest-grossing movie of 1986 and drove a 40% increase in sales of Bomber jackets and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses after its release. Now we’re taking a ride into the DANGER ZONE to talk Top Gun - but does it still take our breath away, or is it just a glorified recruiting ad for flight school? Legends Podcast #575; The Last Blockbuster (Documentaries)
Imagine if podcasting had existed 20 years ago, before streaming video was readily available. If all three of us wanted to watch the same movie at home on the same day, unless it was on TV, we’d have to go to the video store. Most likely, it would have been a Blockbuster Video, the world’s largest chain of home video rental establishments. We’d have to leave our homes, get in our vehicles, drive across town, go in a store, and find the movie on a shelf (if they had it) and then pay to take home and watch it. If you found yourself pining for the bygone era of Blockbuster Video stores, have we got the documentary for you. The Last Blockbuster rewinds to the rise of the VCR age and tracks the only chain’s remaining store in existence, located in Bend, Oregon. And guess what? It’s on Netflix! Legends Podcast #574; CODA (Oscar Winners)
This year’s Academy Awards ceremony was nothing if not surprising. You could even call it, if you will, an about-face that rocked the Oscars, where the most powerful statement was made not with words, but with hands. I’m referring, of course, to Troy Kotsur’s acceptance of Best Supporting Actor as the first Deaf man to win an Oscar. Director Siân Heder’s film about a child of deaf adults, her family, and her love of music also took home the statues for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Apple TV+ produced film also made history as the first movie from a streaming service to win Best Picture. Now we’re talking CODA, and we don’t care who hears us! Legends Podcast #573; The Blues Brothers (Musicals)
Director John Landis and actor John Belushi had already made a hit film together - 1978's National Lampoon's Animal House - when they teamed up with Dan Ackroyd to make movie based on Belushi and Ackroyd's Saturday Night Live characters. The resulting film was one of the most expensive comedies ever made, with cost overruns (including a de facto budget line for cocaine) attributed to Belushi's behavior. The film also features well-known musical artists like Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, shot-on-location Chicagoland scenery, and the most automobiles ever destroyed in the production of a motion picture. We've got 56 minutes of podcasting to go, we've got three hosts, it's dark, and this is The Blues Brothers. Hit it! Legends Podcast #572; The Batman (Comic Book Movies)
We’re back with another take on DC’s Comics’ Caper Crusader. This time, Dawn of the Rise of the War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves offers his film noir spin on the World’s Greatest Detective, starring Robert “Robbat Battinson” Pattinson as a youngish Bruce Wayne in his second year beneath the cowl. Also starring Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffery Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and an unrecognizable Colin Farrel as the Penguin, this Bat-flick’s Bat-running-time is almost 3 hours. Luckily, it’s now on HBO Max so we can just hit pause when we need to empty our Bat-bladders. There are Legends and there are THE Legends, so let’s see if The Batman truly is the definitive article. Legends Podcast #571; Nightmare Alley (Film Noir)
Among the nominees for Best Picture at last month’s Academy Awards was director Guillermo Del Toro’s follow-up to his 2017 Oscar winner The Shape of Water. Starring Bradley Cooper as a down-on-his-luck carnie with a mysterious past, this remake of the 1947 film noir also stars Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Rooney Mara, and David Strathairn, with Del Toro regulars Ron Perlman and Richard Jenkins rounding out the cast. The film didn’t win any Oscars, but production designer Tamara Deverell did take home the Art Directors Guild award for Period Feature Drama. Legends Podcast #570; Death on the Nile (Murder Mystery)
Director Kenneth Brannagh released two films in 2021. One of them was nominated for seven Academy Awards, seven Golden Globes, and six BAFTAs - winning Best Original Screenplay, Best Screenplay, and Outstanding British Film, respectively. The other one is Death on the Nile. Brannagh’s second turn in front of and behind the camera as Agatha Christie’s inimitable sleuth Hercule Poirot sees him back on the case in Egypt. A wealthy wedding party featuring an heiress, a con man, some lesbians, Russell Brand, a jazz singer, and a jilted fiance naturally results in murder - but when everyone has motive and opportunity, what’s a Belgian to do? The film’s release was battered by production issues, the pandemic, and controversy surrounding leading man Armie Hammer, but is the mystery good enough to keep this ship afloat? Legends Podcast #569; Last Night in Soho (Thrillers)
The swingin’ Sixties have long been Hollywood’s playground. Most films romanticize the era’s free spirits and even freer sexual attitudes in a time of social change and historical upheaval. While recent nostalgia trips like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hint at but ultimately gloss over the era’s darker side, Edgar Wright’s latest film pulls no punches in showing that some things are better left in the past. Co-written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns and starring Thomasin Mackenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film also features Matt Smith, Terrence Stamp, and Dame Diana Rigg in her final film role. Now we’re picking up our trusty scissors and reminiscing about Last Night in Soho. For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Legends Podcast #568; Lake Placid (RIP Betty White)
Betty White’s film and television career spanned seven decades and was filled with reinvention. From radio actress to game show staple, from a Golden Girl to being Hot in Cleveland, she never failed to leave us laughing. In 1999, she played a foul-mouthed pensioner with a penchant for reptiles in a creature-feature from Fox and Stan Winston Studios. Co-starring Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt and Brendan Gleeson, written by Ally McBeal creator David E. Kelley, and directed by horror helmer Steve Miner, the movie didn’t exactly take a chunk out of the box office but it kept its head above water long enough to earn five low-budget made-for-TV sequels. Legends Podcast #567; The Godfather (50th Anniversary)
Fifty years ago, Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Mario Puzo’s bestselling novel premiered in movie theaters to near-universal acclaim, spent twenty-three consecutive weeks at number one at box office, and became the highest-grossing movie of all-time. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall, the film won the Oscars for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Brando - which he refused to accept. In the years since, it became the first chapter of a trilogy and has been named by the American Film Institute as the second-greatest film in American cinema. If you haven’t figured it out by now, Legends Podcast is ready to make you an offer you can’t refuse. It’s The Godfather. Legends Podcast #566; 8 Mile (Musicals)
Twenty years ago, Eminem was one of the most successful - and divisive - recording artists in the world. He was a white rapper from the poor suburbs of Detroit whose meteoric rise to fame was perhaps only eclipsed by his ability to cause controversy with his lyrics. Director Curtis Hanson (The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, L.A. Confidential) and screenwriter Scott Silver (Joker) created a movie based on Eminem’s true-life beginnings, starring the rapper as himself. Co-starring Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon, Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy and Anthony Mackie, the movie also launched the Academy Award-winning single “Lose Yourself.” Now sit down with Legends Podcast as we enjoy a fresh plate of mom’s spaghetti with 8 Mile. Legends Podcast #565; The King’s Man (Action Movies)
Director Matthew Vaughn’s series of Kingman films, based on the comic book by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, focus on a secret British intelligence agency. A prequel, also directed by Vaughn, telling the origin story of the Kingsman during The Great War, was released last year after being delayed eight times by production issues and the pandemic. With an all-star cast and the series’ signature hyper-fashionable - and hyper-violent - style, does The King’s Man prove to be worth the wait? Legends Podcast #564; Free Guy (Video Game Movies)
Canadian treasure Ryan Reynolds has gone from rom-com star to failed DC superhero to successful Marvel anti-hero, as well as doing action movies with The Rock and playing a Pokemon. He returned to the video game genre with his most recent film, playing a non-player character in an online video game who levels up to save his virtual world. With cameos and pop culture references galore, this film by Shawn Levy also stars Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, and New Zealand’s Taika Waititi - who has definitely never, ever been in a movie with Ryan Reynolds before. The movie was also the 10th highest-grossing domestic film of 2021, and now Legends Podcast is livestreaming on Twitch while we talk Free Guy! (Just kidding, we are not.) Legends Podcast #563; The Harder They Fall (Action Movies)
Director Jeymes Samuel’s debut film brings together the all-stars of the American Wild West - Nat Love, Rufus Buck, Marshall Bass Reeves, “Stagecoach” Mary Fields, and “Treacherous” Trudy Smith, among others - all real-life historical figures, and all of them black - in a team-up movie for Netflix. And befitting an Avengers-style Western, Samuel assembled an all-star cast including Jonthan Majors, Idris Elba, Delroy Lindo, Zazie Beetz, and Regina King to bring these figures to life. Legends Podcast #562; The Warriors (Action Movies)
Director Walter Hill’s third movie adapted source material based on Greek history following an army of soldiers on a long march home across hostile territory. In this case, the soldiers are a group of street toughs making their way across a 1970s New York City populated by colorful gangs. When the film was released, it was accompanied by an outbreak of violence linked to its screenings, including three deaths, prompting Paramount Pictures to pull advertising and pay for additional theater security. Nevertheless, the film was a success and went on to inspire comic book and video game adaptations over the years. Now we’re hopping the turnstile for that long subway ride from the Bronx to Coney Island with The Warriors. Legends… come out to pla-a-ay! Legends Podcast #561; Big Trouble in Little China (Action Movies)
Director John Carpenter always wanted to make a martial-arts movie. He got his chance with his eighth feature film - and his third time teaming up with actor Kurt Russell - an action-comedy set in the mythical and murky underworld of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Fox rushed the movie through production and release to avoid competing with a similar-themed Eddie Murphy vehicle, The Golden Child, leaving little time for marketing the movie against its real competition: James Cameron’s hotly anticipated Aliens, which opened two weeks later. The end result was a movie that bombed in theaters but went on to enjoy a long life on home video and cable TV as a cult classic. The creator of John Wick and director of Hardcore Henry teamed up to create an action-comedy movie starring Better Call Saul actor Bob Odenkirk. What more do you need to know, buddy? Originally postponed by the pandemic, the film was released in theaters in March ‘21 with a PVOD release a month later. Legends Podcast #559; Moulin Rouge! (Musicals)
Director Baz Luhrman’s theater-themed “Red Curtain” trilogy drew to a close in 2001 with the follow-up to his breakout hit Romeo + Juliet. As with Baz’s take on The Bard, this film was filled with anachronism. It was a jukebox musical that fused cabaret, Broadway, vaudeville, and Bollywood. It was a lavish period piece set in turn-of-the-century bohemian Paris to the songs of the MTV Generation. And it was a hit, grossing almost $180 million and earning eight Oscar nominations. It’s hip-hop single, “Lady Marmalade” was a chart-topping hit, and the Broadway musical version of the film just won the Tony Award last year. Legends Podcast #558; A History of Violence (Comic Book Movies)
Director David Cronenberg is best known for mind-bending body horror in films like Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly, but he made his first “comic book movie” in 2005, an Academy Award-nominated adaptation of a graphic novel - and we do mean graphic. Starring Viggo Mortensen as a small-town diner owner whose mobster past catches up with him, the film was a modest success both financially and critically, and led to a series of collaborations between the actor and director, including Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. Now, we’re watching the last major Hollywood movie to be released on VHS, which makes it historical - A History of Violence.
