122: Simon Peterson – Our Paradigms Is Not Their Paradigms
Simon is currently the CEO of Rowing New Zealand and has been in the role for 12 years.Simon was former CEO of Sport Auckland, where he worked for over nine years. Simon is the former Chairman of Paralympics NZ, where he was in the role for the Athens and Beijing Paralympics campaigns. During his time in that role, he was on the International Development Committee for the International Paralympic movement. Overall, Simon has over 25 years of experience in sport management. He has also completed the Harvard University course – Governance for Non-profit Excellence. Simon has also been a professional cricket coach (six years) and played first-class cricket for Auckland. Simon’s coaching and playing experience and his understanding of sport management are integral in understanding and creating a high-performance environment for New Zealand’s rowers.Simon has been Chairman of the Pinnacle Programme, which is a Hyundai NZ-backed initiative to develop the potential of young New Zealanders across music, art, culture, and Sport. Simon is also a Director on a family-owned commercial Board. He won the NZ Sport and Recreation Leadership award in 2015 with a Professional Development scholarship in the name of Chris Doig, a former Rowing NZ board member. 120: Stephanie Cousins - Successful Leaders Hire On Potential
Stephanie worked for more than 15 years in the not-for-profit sector, promoting human rights and sustainable development causes. Stephanie is currently Global Co-CEO of Talent Beyond Boundaries, a non-profit on a mission to enable refugees and other displaced people to secure jobs overseas and migrate on the basis of their skills to secure their futures. Prior to that, Stephanie led advocacy and external affairs at Amnesty International Australia and held several senior leadership positions at Oxfam Australia and Oxfam International. In 2017 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to research innovative refugee admission programs across six countries. She wrote about my findings at www.makerefuge.org - a website created to showcase how governments, citizens, and other actors can better work together to welcome refugees into our communities. Stephanie has a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Public Policy and Management, and a Masters of Public and International Law from the University of Melbourne. 116: Jacques Landry - Doing What You Said You Would Do
Jacques Landry is the CEO of Cycling New Zealand. A High-Performance National Sporting Organization. His background has many international achievements and appointments.He started racing road bikes competitively at the age of 17 in Quebec City (Canada). He made the national cycling team (Canada) at age 20. He competed in his first Olympic Games for Canada in road cycling in 1992 at the age of 23 and then again at the age of 27 in Atlanta in 1996. He retired from competitive cycling in 1998.He was hired as a road cycling development coach for Cycling Canada in 1998 while completing his coaching degree, which he completed in 2001.He was hired as Road coach at BikeNZ (Now Cycling New Zealand) in 2003, where he went on to set up a European base for kiwi cyclists in the South of France. He accompanied the Kiwi road riders at both the Athens and Beijing Games as a road coach.At the end of 2008 he was hired as High-Performance Director at the Canadian Cycling Association (Now Cycling Canada). He led programs that yielded 12 Paralympic medals and 3 Olympic medals over two Olympic and Paralympic cycles.Jacques was hired as a High-Performance consultant at Cycling New Zealand in 2018 to assist the current High-Performance Director.In early 2019 he was appointed as interim CEO at Cycling New Zealand and then successfully appointed to the role mid-2020 as CEO of Cycling New Zealand.He has assisted other National Sports Organization in High-Performance structuring (Like Taekwondo Canada)He has spoken at coaching conferences in Canada and in Russia and is called upon to sit on numerous committees pertaining to High Performance, whether it be in Cycling or in the multisport area.On this episode: Hear Jacques talk about how he got started with cycling Jacques discusses that he didn’t purposely get into leadership. 107: Dave Greenberg - Calm the Farm – We’ve Got This
Dave Greenberg was born in New York City, spent time in Buffalo, NY and Dallas Texas, before moving to New Zealand, for a one-year IT contract, in 1990 where he still resides today.From the time he was only eight years old, Dave says he knew that he wanted to be a fireman. He saved his first life, doing CPR, when he was only 13-years old. Although he pursued a professional IT career, his passion for the emergency services never waned. Alongside his studies and career, he became a volunteer firefighter or ambulance officer, wherever he lived.His one-year IT contract was quickly extended to two, and during the second year, in 1991, he was lucky enough to become a crew member on a rescue helicopter, in Wellington, NZ. The volunteer position became a paid career, lasting over 25-years, where he was part of a team on nearly 4000 missions. For 12 of the years Dave was also the Operations Manager for the charity which ran the helicopter and two air ambulance aeroplanes. He managed a team of over 30 pilots, crew and paramedics, and managed the operational relationship with two aircraft suppliers, the health system and the local ambulance service.Dave re-started Emergency Preparedness Services, an Emergency Management consulting firm that he formed in the early 90s. EPS offers emergency training and consulting services to the corporate and government sector. He also began using his wealth of knowledge and stories to begin a professional speaking career; his main speaking topics are around Creating a Response culture and creating Trust.Covid19 brought much of his business to a screeching halt, in March 2020. As the Covid lockdown was announced in New Zealand, Dave was offered a short-term contract with the NZ Ministry of Health, on the Emergency Management Team and the Covid19 Response team.Dave is convinced that we all have the ability to create our own luck, and much of his good luck has been following the advice of mentors, along his career.Dave is proudest of his helicopter career, and all the people he had a hand in helping, over the 25-years.That being said, he is also immensely proud to be part of the Covid19 response team which has seen New Zealand’s response be recognised as one of the best in the world.
