The movie, which stars Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and a lineup of great cameos, finds a chance encounter with an astrological reader (Rita Moreno) that causes the Walkers to wake up to a full body switch between all of the members of the family. The director tells us why he wanted to add to the canon of body switch movies like Vise Versa and Freaky Friday, what it was like to workshop with the actors for each of them to play against their age, and having Jennifer Garner cook for everyone at her home in order to bring them all closer together. McG, who got his start making some of the biggest music videos of the 90s and 2000s for Korn, Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, Barenaked Ladies, and tons of others, discusses who that part of his career still influences what he does now, how he got those incredible colors that became part of his calling card, and how he got Weezer to be in this movie, as well as the cover song jam session they had with Ed Helms. This month, we’re on a mission to spread the word about Kyle Meredith W... far and wide, and you’re our secret weapon. R.E.M.’s Mike Mills catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about the 25th-anniversary edition of Up, their first post-Bill Berry album that found the Athens band trying out a new electronic-based sound. The bassist/songwriter discusses the difficult circumstances in which the LP was created, how they found the sound, and the stories behind songs “Airportman,” “Sad Professor,” “Daysleeper,” and “Hope”. Mills goes on to talk about why they decided not to include the demos on this deluxe package, while also confirming that there are “plenty of unheard songs in the vault.” The two also chat about the band’s recent resurgence in the popular zeitgeist, from covers from The Monkees Mickey Dolenz and Soccer Mommy to the use of their music on TV series The Bear. Goosebump’s Isa Briones & Ana Yi Puig on Fresh Nostalgia, Trauma, and a 90’s Soundtrack
Isa Briones & Ana Yi Puig join Kyle Meredith to talk about the new Goosebumps series, out now on Disney+ and Hulu. This latest iteration finds the popular R.L. Stine books given a fresh take and a bit more of an adult storyline, following a group of five high schoolers who embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle — while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents’ past. Alongside Briones and Puig, the series also stars Zach Morris, Miles McKenna, Will Price, Rachael Harris, Justin Long, Rob Huebel, and Jonathan Silverman, among others. The actresses discuss bringing a fresh take to the reboot, allowing for nostalgia while creating their own version, and making sure there are still easter eggs connecting us to the original series. Briones and Puig also talk about the trauma bonding these characters go through, what they inherit from their parents, and how when even being chased by a ghost demon, they’re still able to form a love triangle. Of course, the soundtrack is also a big topic with its heavy 90s throwback featuring R.E.M, Radiohead, Soundgarden, and Elastica next to artists like Courtney Barnet and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This month, we’re on a mission to spread the word about Kyle Meredith W... far and wide, and you’re our secret weapon. Francis Lawrence on the Music, Rebellion, & Extra Footage of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
Francis Lawrence joins Kyle Meredith to talk about The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, the prequel that stars Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler and serves as an origin story to villain Coriolanus Snow and takes place 64 years before the Jennifer Lawrence-starring run of the story. The director, who was also behind Catching Fire and both Mockingjays, discusses how music has a much bigger focus this time around, working with Dave Cobb to bring the songs to life, and casting Rachel Zegler, who performs the hell out of them on screen, as well as getting to hear about the origins of “The Hanging Tree,” which Jennifer Lawrence famously sang before. Lawrence also tells us what it was like to tell a story where we know - at least somewhat - how it will end, along with the reflections of bigger social and political themes that serve as its undercurrent. Rounding out the main cast are Jason Schwartzman, Viola Davis, and Peter Dinklage, all of whom give incredible performances, and Lawrence even tips us off that there are “hours” of extra footage from Schwartzman’s time in front of the camera.Listen to Francis Lawrence sit and chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on Youtube. Neil deGrasse Tyson and Scott Hamliton Kennedy on Anti-Vaxxers, Disinformation, and a Shot In The Arm
Neil deGrasse Tyson and Scott Hamilton Kennedy join Kyle Meredith to discuss the new documentary, Shot In The Arm, which takes a look at the "anti-vax" movement, both before but especially during the COVID outbreak, and the disinformation that threatens our future. Kennedy, the writer and director, talks about originally working on a piece about the 2019 measles outbreak before transitioning to what was happening in 2020, while deGrasse Tyson digs into the social contract we as a society have - or should have - with one another. The three also bat around the idea of a versus mentality that's currently gripping the country, why people are led astray by disinformation, and how history usually has a way of showing us where we need to go. Neil and Scott also touch on the music in the film, from the Wilco song that gives the documentary its title, to how David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” speaks for the bigger themes and hopes. This month, we’re on a mission to spread the word about Kyle Meredith W... far and wide, and you’re our secret weapon. Rufus Wainwright on Opera, Taylor Swift, and 20 Years of Want
Rufus Wainwright joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the 20th anniversary of Want, his double album (when parts one and two are combined) that found himself becoming more of his true self on record. The interview was recorded at the Hell or Highwater bar in Louisville, KY the day before Wainwright performed the songs with the Louisville Orchestra, so the two discuss what lends this particular album to an orchestral arrangement and why the album was always meant to be played that way, as well as a look back at that period in his career as an artist with three successful albums in a row. The multi-genre singer-songwriter also digs into the operas that he’s written, having been a fan of opera since his teen years, while he also considers why so many other artists continue to make the same songs over and over, all the while trying to figure out why his daughter likes Taylor Swift so much.Listen to Rufus Wainwright sit and chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on YouTube. Everclear’s Art Alexakis on the Adversity, Youth, & Rallying Cries of Their New Live LP
Everclear singer-songwriter Art Alexakis joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s new live album, Live At The Whiskey A Go Go. The frontman starts by proclaiming that he’s done with making albums and plans to concentrate more on singles and live releases before the conversation turns to his history of writing lyrics that seem to narrate a much bigger story throughout their catalog, lyrics that include plenty of easter eggs for longtime fans. Alexakis gives the backstories on “Father of Mine” and “Local God,” the latter written for Baz Lurman’s Romeo + Juliet, and why “Nervous and Weird” and “Fire Maple Song,” both from the band’s debut LP World of Noise, still excite and resonate with him. The live album also includes two new studio cuts at the end, “Year of the Tiger” and “Sing Away,” which features his own daughter in the music video, leading the conversation to consider how his penchant for writing with the hardships of youth, and his own battles, have lead to many of the relatable moments found in some of his biggest hits. Further on, Art also says that he’d like to see deluxe editions of Sparkle & Fade and Songs For An American movie for their upcoming anniversaries, as well as the type of new releases that he’s looking forward to making.Listen to Everclear singer-songwriter Art Alexakis sit and chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on Youtube. The Kills drop by to catch up with Kyle Meredith about their latest album, God Games. Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince take us through the challenges they put in place for themselves, including playing instruments they had never played before and staying away from the ones they’re known for, as well as the magic in naivety. Jamie then dives into recording “Godless Spirituals” in a church studio, one they preferred to stay deep in the depths of the dark basement studio rooms, along with the time of year when Los Angeles starts to feel “witchy,” while Alison describes the strange feelings in the country during the pandemic that led to the song “301”. The two also look back on the 2003 album Keep On Your Mean Side and consider how this new set might speak to that debut LP, as well as their place in the fabric of the 2000s music scene.Listen to The Kills sit and chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on Youtube. David Yates & Lawrence Grey on Pain Hustlers, Emily Blunt, & Harry Potter
David Yates & Lawrence Grey join Kyle Meredith to talk about the film, Pain Hustlers (out now on Netflix), which tells the story of Liza Drake (Emily Blunt), a blue-collar single mom who has just lost her job and is at the end of her rope when a chance meeting with pharmaceutical sales rep played by Chris Evans puts her on an upwards trajectory economically - but dubious path ethically - as she becomes entangled in a dangerous racketeering scheme. Dealing with her increasingly unhinged boss (Andy Garcia), the worsening medical condition of her daughter (Chloe Coleman), and a growing awareness of the devastation the company is causing forces Liza to examine her choices and ultimately gives a revealing look at what some people do out of desperation and others do out of greed. The director and producer discuss why they wanted to take on a story about the fentanyl epidemic and how this movie shows us a look behind the curtain of Big Pharma, as told through the sales reps. Grey, who also produced the Steven Soderbergh-directed The Laundromat, tells us how some of the most outlandish parts of the story came from real life, while Yates talks about directing Emily Blunt as a complicated hero/villain and how her character is already resonating with viewers. Yates, who famously directed the final four Harry Potter films as well as the Fantastic Beasts trilogy, discusses what it was like to leave the World of Wizardry to get back to a more point-and-shoot style of filmmaking.Listen to David Yates & Lawrence Grey sit and chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on Youtube.
