(Portland,  Oregon alternative country band) ABOUT JENNY DONT AND THE SPURS: Since their inception in 2012, the Spurs have kept a relentless schedule of recording, playing locally, and touring. After nearly 500 live appearances in almost a dozen countries, and with a slew of albums and singles to their name, Jenny Don’t And The Spurs are just getting warmed up.   The Spurs were founded one cold, winter’s evening by Jenny and Kelly. Jenny had been fronting her own band, DON’T, for some time, as well as playing the occasional solo acoustic set here and there. Kelly, who had been in a slew of Portland punk bands since the 80’s, and who had spent the previous several years balancing a grueling touring schedule playing drums with the garage rock trio PIERCED ARROWS and bass with Portland punk-rock destroyers P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S., and wanted to switch gears a bit. After the concept of forming a raw, real, and back-to-the-roots country band had taken hold, it wasn’t long before the couple was rehearsing a seminal set of standards by such influential early country crooners and outlaws like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ernest Tubb, and Hank Sr., as well as a sprinkling of originals. It was only a few weeks later that Kelly’s bandmates Fred and Toody Cole got wind of the developing musical project that was taking form in Jenny and Kelly’s kitchen and decided to call their bluff by giving them an unsolicited support slot on an upcoming show featuring the Cole’s own solo two-piece act. Not having anticipated such a high-profile live appearance as a first live outing, and feeling like the guitar-and-bass-only lineup that the band had started life as was lacking something on the rhythm end of things, they decided to ask their friend Sam Henry to join them on drums. Sam, who in addition to being Jenny’s bandmate in DON’T and sometimes solo-set-collaborator, had already had a long, well respected career as one of Portland’s best drummers, having played with such first-generation punk bands as the Wipers, The Rats and Napalm Beach. After a couple of weeks of practice, the debut live appearance of the band went off without a hitch and the core lineup of Jenny Don’t And The Spurs was born.   The trio of Jenny, Kelly, and Sam existed in this form for the first year-an-a-half or so of the band’s existence, playing whatever local venue would take them – bars, clubs, porches, basements, backyards, and even a bookstore. This worked well for a while, and occasionally the Spurs would enlist talent from a pool of several friends to sit in on lead guitar or lap steel. The addition of a second guitar rounded out the sound of the band to the point where Jenny and Co. decided to make it a permanent part of the band’s lineup. After a couple of false starts and a bit of difficulty finding a fourth member who could commit to the Spur’s sometimes grueling touring schedule, the incredible Christopher March became a member of the family in early 2017. Christopher brought with him a wealth of talent and live gig experience, having spent years playing on the Northwest Country, Rockabilly, and Honky-Tonk circuit.      Now, with several West Coast and North American tours, as well as three European tours and hundreds of local shows under their tooled-leather Western belts, the Spurs are gearing up for the release of their third full-length studio album. Today we interview MICK CONROY from the 80s New Wave Band MODERN ENGLISH! We talk about the Mick's beginnings in music, touring, the band Piroshka, the 80s cruise, the upcoming Modern English album and more! ABOUT MODERN ENGLISH: Formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals), Modern English were originally known as The Lepers. The group expanded to "Modern English" when Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards) were subsequently added to the line-up of the band.    You can find our podcast almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.  We have a  YouTube Channel where you can find a version of this podcast with some video from the interview. They are best remembered for their songs "I Melt with You," "Hands Across the Sea," and "Ink and Paper". Jim and Mike interview author and Beatles historian Ivor Davis! We talk about his time with the Beatles and some of the amazing things he witnessed on the Beatles first tour of America. ABOUT IVOR: London-born Ivor Davis first came to America in the early sixties and was appointed West Coast correspondent for the 4-million-a-day circulation London Daily Express in l963. His first big assignment came the following year: to hang out, travel with and get to know the four members of a new pop group from Liverpool who were tearing up the world with their music: the Beatles. He was the only British daily newspaper correspondent to cover the Fab Four’s first American tour from start to finish, given unparalleled access to John, Paul, George and Ringo on the road, in their hotel and during long nights of card and Monopoly games as they talked frankly about their bizarre new life. He also ghosted a regular newspaper column for George. Ivor’s first-hand, insider’s memoir is a fascinating travel back in time where for the first time he chronicles, frankly and humorously, 34 days with the world’s most famous band on the road—at a critical moment in the history of rock. Over more than four decades as a writer for the Express and the Times of London, Ivor covered major events in North America. He penned a weekly entertainment column for the New York Times Syndicate for over 15 years, interviewing some of the biggest names in show business, from Cary Grant to Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton to Tom Cruise and Muhammad Ali. In 1962 he was smuggled onto the campus of the riot-torn University of Mississippi when James Meredith was enrolled and three years later was in the front lines as Los Angeles’ Watts riots erupted. He covered Robert Kennedy’s 1968 presidential bid and was in the Ambassador Hotel the night Kennedy was assassinated.  He was one of the Boys on the Bus chronicling the life of actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan, first in his campaign for governor of California, then for president. In l969 he co-wrote Five to Die, the first book ever published about the Sharon Tate murders. (The book was updated in 2011.)  As a foreign correspondent, he traveled throughout the western hemisphere covering riots, floods, earthquakes and politics. As Editor at Large for Los Angeles Magazine. he and his late wife Sally Ogle Davis wrote over 100 major magazine and cover stories. He has reported on four World Soccer Cups for CBS radio. Today Jim goes solo with his interview with Iowa singer / songwriter / musician - DAN TEDESCO  ABOUT DAN TEDESCO : Growing up his ears were fortunate enough to be treated to a fairly eclectic musical mix: The Beatles, Dylan, Paul Simon, James Taylor, The Band, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, CCR, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty. Even a healthy dose of Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner. A friend in his neighborhood used to make cassette mixes for him: The Who, They Might Be Giants, The Police, The Clash. He missed the grunge period, and it wouldn’t be until nearly a decade later that he'd discover the power of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Once he found the guitar, things focused in a touch. It wasn’t unusual for him to fall asleep at night to the sounds of guitar wizards like Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. And the random Van Halen record was never far away. Then there was the jazz period. Wes Montgomery. Joe Pass. George Benson. Charlie Christian. John Coltrane. Elvin Jones. McCoy Tyner. The things he learned from those guys.   It’s everything really.  The spirit of jazz. The freedom of it. That’s been it’s great influence on him. But I was always a rock ’n roll kid. Pete Townsend more than Pat Metheny. And, ultimately, he craved power chords over the complex harmonies of jazz. So, like many of his heroes, he was a bit of a social outcast. That, if anything, was and has always been his struggle. Everyone has at least one. And he found his comfort, security and confidence in the world out on the fringe, populated by the misfits. Today Jim and Mike talk about the 1976 film THE LAST WALTZ and end the show with the US Top 10 from the week ending April 10th, 1976.   ABOUT THE LAST WALTZ The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as The Band's "farewell concert appearance", and the concert saw The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including their previous employers Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan as well as Paul Butterfield, Bobby Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, and Neil Young. The musical director for the concert was The Band's original record producer, John Simon. The event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same title, released in 1978. Jonathan Taplin, who was The Band's tour manager from 1969 to 1972 and later produced Scorsese's film Mean Streets, suggested that Scorsese would be the ideal director for the project and introduced Robbie Robertson and Scorsese. Taplin served as executive producer. The film features concert performances, intermittent song renditions shot on a studio soundstage, and interviews by Scorsese with members of The Band. A triple-LP soundtrack recording, produced by Simon and Rob Fraboni, was issued in 1978. The film was released on DVD in 2002 as was a four-CD box set of the concert and related studio recordings. Today we talk with LITTLE ANTHONY about some of the highlights of his 60+ year career in music.  He talks about Buddy Holly, Elvis & Smokey Robinson to name a few of people he's met and known over the years.  We cover topics like segregation in the 50s, Religion, and his gift of an incredible voice!  It's an interview not to be missed!   ABOUT LITTLE ANTHONY: Little Anthony and the Imperials, American rhythm-and-blues vocal group whose career straddled the eras of doo-wop and soul music. The Imperials were formed in New York City in 1958 as a new incarnation of a short-lived group called the Chesters. The vocal combo’s original members were Jerome Anthony Gourdine, Clarence Collins, Ernest Wright, Jr., Tracy Lord, and Nat Rogers    The Imperials found instant success with their second single, “Tears on My Pillow” (1958), a doo-wop ballad distinguished by Gourdine’s youthful falsetto. While introducing the song on the radio, influential disc jockey Alan Freed, an early supporter, called the group Little Anthony and the Imperials (in reference to Gourdine), and the moniker stuck. After a number of less-successful releases, a brief departure by Gourdine, and the replacement of Lord and Rogers, the group hit its stride in the mid-1960s. Producer-songwriter Teddy Randazzo brought the Imperials’ vocal style in line with the popular soul sound of the day, resulting in a string of pop and rhythm-and-blues hits, including “I’m on the Outside (Looking In)” (1964), “Goin’ out of My Head” (1964), and “Hurt So Bad” (1965).   By the mid-1970s the group’s commercial fortunes had waned and the lineup had gone through several changes, most notably the 1969 departure of Wright. Gourdine left in 1975. The Imperials carried on for four more years but never achieved another American hit. Gourdine, Collins, and Wright reconvened in 1992 with latter-day member Sammy Strain (who had since joined the O’Jays) for a successful appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Thereafter, the group continued touring with varying lineups into the early 21st century, releasing a new album, You’ll Never Know, in 2008. Marcella Levy, known professionally as Marcella Detroit, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist.  She co-wrote the 1977 Eric Clapton hit "Lay Down Sally" and released her debut album Marcella in 1982. She joined Shakespears Sister in 1988 with ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Their first two albums, Sacred Heart (1989), and Hormonally Yours (1992), both reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. Detroit sang the lead vocals on their biggest hit, "Stay", which spent eight consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1992.  Detroit left the band in 1993 and had a UK top 20 hit with "I Believe" in 1994. She formed the Marcy Levy Band in 2002, and finished third in the 2010 ITV series Popstar to Operastar. Jim talks with Jim and Mike about the new release: the Smithereens "lost" Album, touring, a remote control car, bruce springsteen, the sugarcubes .. and much more.   Jim Babjak is the lead guitar player and co-founder of The Smithereens.   He also is the leader of the band Buzzed Meg and a member of the band, The Bar.   The Smithereens formed in 1980 with the late Pat DiNizio (vocals & guitar), Jim Babjak (guitar & vocals), Mike Mesaros (bass guitar & vocals), and Dennis Diken (drums & percussion).    The band are perhaps best known for a string of hits in the late 1980s through the mid 1990s, including "Only a Memory", "A Girl Like You" and "Too Much Passion". The Smithereens have collaborated with numerous musicians, both in the studio (Belinda Carlisle, Julian Lennon, Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega) and live (Graham Parker and The Kinks).   The Smithereens television credits include Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, MTV's Unplugged, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Uncle Floyd Show, CBS's This Morning, The Dennis Miller Show, and The Arsenio Hall Show.   In 2019, Babjak, along with his bandmates in the Smithereens, were inducted into the class of 2018 New Jersey Hall of Fame.   He has also been inducted into the White Castle Hall of Fame class of 2002 for his song "White Castle Blues."

Today we interview Joey Molland from the 1970s band Badfinger! Joey is an English composer and rock guitarist whose recording career spans five decades. He is best known as a member of Badfinger, the most successful of the acts he performed with. Molland is the last surviving member from the band's classic line-up.   They had such great hits as "Come and Get (Paul McCartney penned song), "No Matter What" and "Baby Blue". We talk about growing up in Liverpool, The Cavern Club, working with the Beatles (specifically George Harrison and John Lennon), being mistaken for Paul McCartney and of course his brand new album which is great! ABOUT DAXX NIELSEN: Growing up in a house full of musical instruments, Daxx gravitated towards the drums at a very early age. After high school Daxx traveled the US extensively with his original band, Harmony Riley. Over a period of 5 years Harmony Riley recorded 2 full length albums and 3 EP's and performed almost 1,000 shows around the US and Canada. Upon the band's dissolution Daxx packed up and moved to Los Angeles where he quickly got into the studio and touring world. His first break was drumming for surf guitar pioneer Dick Dale. While on breaks from touring he did dozens of recording sessions, performed anywhere and everywhere with numerous local artists, and formed A Fine Frenzy with singer/songwriter Alison Sudol. This led to years of touring and recording with Brandi Carlile, Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, The Smashing Pumpkins, and numerous others.   Since March of 2010, Daxx has been the touring drummer for the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTED band CHEAP TRICK, performing over 1,000 shows with them and recording the critically acclaimed Bang Zoom Crazy Hello.  Daxx co-wrote and drummed on the score for Oscar Award Winning documentary UNDEFEATED  Some of the other projects Daxx has been involved with over the last few years are; drumming two nights for Eddie Vedder, drumming for The Fab Faux, as well as recording with numerous projects.   Songs "Long Time No See Ya", "You Got It Going On" and "Radio Lover" used with permission from Daxx Nielsen.

Our Interview with JITTERY JACK - Boston's own Rockabilly Musician We talk with Jack about Rockabilly music, Martin Guitar, Beer, ex wives .. oh, and also Jittery Jack's career in music.     Jittery Jack hails from Boston MA, USA and plays a wild brand of Rock 'n' Roll & Rockabilly with an East-Coast Bang! Jim and Mike INTERVIEW Prop Master, Actor, Singer  - Mark A Richardson   Mark is an actor, musician and prop master.  He's worked on such movies as The Devil's Rejects, Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN, Pirahna 3-D and the tv shows Power Rangers (he created all the props for the show) and the current tv show Queen of the South.     He's also the lead singer in the bands Hypnotics and 647F.  Hypnotics had a slight novelty hit with "Jerry's on Drugs" which was played on Dr. Demento (we play some of the song).   Also our friend Darren Auck joins us to sit in on the interview.  Darren is a great illustrator and former Marvel Illustrator.
