Combudo - A Discussion with Lee Hasdell

Send us a textLee Hasdell is often known as "The Godfather of UK MMA" and for good reason. He discovered the burgeoning new limited rules fighting scene in Japan before the first UFC shook the martial arts world to its foundations. Already a successful nak muay and kickboxer who had fought internationally under some of the biggest pioneers of the sport and earning several titles at the time, he switched to MMA and began promoting the first incarnations of this new sport in the 1990s. He quickly became a controversial and revered figure. However, Lee's scope stretches far further than competing in, teaching and promoting professional combat sports. He has a deep respect for traditional martial arts, was one of the original reality revolutionaries on the self-protection circuit and a sophisticated cross-trainer who gathers insight from a range of disciplines outside of combative systems. On this episode Lee shares his insights into Combudo, an organisation and approach to martial arts, combat sports and self-protection he founded in 2000. Combudo WebsiteCombudo Facebook PageMusic for this episode: 🔻"Ghostrifter Official - Resurgence" is under a Free To Use YouTube license    / @ghostrifterofficial  Music powered by BreakingCopyright:    • 🎥 [Copyright Free Trailer Music] - "R...  🔺 Music for the Outro:  "Titans" by Cold CinemaLink: https://bit.ly/3HjGhpVSupport the show Support the show Support me on Patreon Buy "When Parents Aren't Around" Audiobook Clubb Chimera Website Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook Group Clubb Chimera Facebook Page Clubb Chimera Twitter Clubb Chimera YouTube Clubb Chimera Instagram Jamie Clubb Books

The Way of the Vulture Part III

Send us a textChapter IV - Escaping the Vultures We pick up on our series dedicated to self-protection as it relates to opportunistic predators. After a brief look at the unfair reputation real vultures receive, we return to the serial killers mentioned in the first chapter.  The episode touches upon some real-life examples of Gavin De Becker's survival signals, the double tap, an asymmetrical assault changing to symmetrical with the de-escalation fallout, tactical escape and a broader view of long-term self-protection - why empathy is important to protect the ones we love from society's scavenging predators. Haarmann, The Story of a Werewolf  by Theodor Lessing (The Monsters of Weimar)Killing for Company by Brian MastersThe Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer by Brian MastersMy Life Among the Serial Killers by Helen Morrison Serial Killers: The Growing Menace by Joel NorrisThe Long ShadowDes (Guardian article)Drink Spiking Myths Metropolitan Police WebsiteDrug-Spiking Reports Rise FivefoldMemories of a Murderer: The Nilsen TapesThe Gift of Fear by Gavin De BeckerMa Music for the Outro:  "Titans" by Cold CinemaLink: https://bit.ly/3HjGhpVSupport the show Support the show Support me on Patreon Buy "When Parents Aren't Around" Audiobook Clubb Chimera Website Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook Group Clubb Chimera Facebook Page Clubb Chimera Twitter Clubb Chimera YouTube Clubb Chimera Instagram Jamie Clubb Books

Cakewalker Part III: Just a Left Hook (Christmas Episode)

Send us a textChristmas takes us full circle as we continue with the Jersey Joe Walcott story. We pick up with the build up to Jersey Joe's third attempt at the world heavyweight title. The National Boxing Association declares the position vacant with its former holder, Joe Louis, promoting a fight to determine the new champion. Jersey Joe takes on the "Cincinnati Cobra" Ezzard Charles. Along the way we look at the history of the left hook, boxing's great surprise attack forged through the gloved era and an apt metaphor for life. We also take a brief look at Two-Ton Tony Galento, one of the sport's most colourful figures, as he checks out the two new prospects. Going further back, we recount the uncanny tale of when Jersey Joe met the original Joe Walcott and look at his story as one of history's greatest welterweights. Shownotes/Links: Tribute to the Man Who Didn't Quit Jersey Joe Walcott: A Boxing BiographyBoxing Biographies: Jersey Joe WalcottClose Encounters with the Gloves OffThe RingEast Side BoxingWho in the World is Arnold Cream?  Music for the Outro:  "Titans" by Cold CinemaLink: https://bit.ly/3HjGhpVSupport the show Support the show Support me on Patreon Buy "When Parents Aren't Around" Audiobook Clubb Chimera Website Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook Group Clubb Chimera Facebook Page Clubb Chimera Twitter Clubb Chimera YouTube Clubb Chimera Instagram Jamie Clubb Books

The Last Night of the Ghouls Redux! (Halloween Bonus Episode)

Send us a textThis bonus show is a re-edited,  re-recorded and newly produced version of our original Halloween episode from season one. Enjoy! In this special edition of the Clubb Chimera Martial Arts podcast, we re-visit Halloween 1828 and the climax of a series of cold-blooded murders. Taking a self-protection eye, we look at how raw opportunity and circumstance tempted two infamous criminals to sell the lives of their own for profit. The podcast raises questions regarding victim selection and how it can be defeated through target hardening as well as the weaponising of alcohol by criminals, the importance of training against multiple attackers and on the ground, and the need to promote safeguarding in the community.Resources for this Episode:Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook GroupClubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksBurke and Hare: The Year of the Ghouls by Brian BaileyThe Real Mary PatersonThe Anatomy Murders Corpse of the Day--James Wilson, alias Daft JamieTravelsafe: The Complete Guide to Travel Security by Peter ConsterdineDrinkaware Music Credits: MATTIA CUPELLIDark Tension Rising Music Music for the Outro:  "Titans" by Cold CinemaLink: https://bit.ly/3HjGhpVSupport the show Support the show Support me on Patreon Buy "When Parents Aren't Around" Audiobook Clubb Chimera Website Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook Group Clubb Chimera Facebook Page Clubb Chimera Twitter Clubb Chimera YouTube Clubb Chimera Instagram Jamie Clubb Books

Their Bloody Valentine

Send us a textIt’s 5th February 1943 at the Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan. Sugar Ray Robinson enters the ring to face his latest opponent. Robinson has fought 40 professional bouts now, not losing one, and has been dazzling audiences since his amateur days. Tonight is a rematch.  The man standing across from the ring is Jake La Motta. The last time they met it he was described as a “human truck”. Robinson had won the match with what looked like relative ease on the scorecards and the audience had shown their approval. Giving away 10lbs, he had used his superior footwork and exemplified the art of boxing in the eyes of many. However, there were still others who betrayed they primal lust for the gladiatorial roots of pugilism. They saw no entertainment value in a fighter dancing outside of harm’s way. The real fight for them occurred in the pocket; the true test of warriors where the battle glory is earned. They asked what would happen if the truck caught up with the dancer.  Tonight they would find out. For this would be like no rematch Sugar Ray Robinson had fought in his career. When it was over, the previously smitten audiences would fall in love with the clash of styles and would clamour for more. Jake La Motta would later remark that he met Robinson so many times that they almost got married. It therefore seems apt that four of these meetings occur in February. Eight years and nine days to this fateful first rematch, the Robinson/LaMotta feud would culminate in dramatic fashion. The fight inspired books, films, articles and boxing lore: Their Bloody Valentine! Shownotes/links: Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksFinding the Truth - Ben MyersMusic Title: Music for the Outro:  "Titans" by Cold CinemaLink: https://bit.ly/3HjGhpVSupport the show Support the show Support me on Patreon Buy "When Parents Aren't Around" Audiobook Clubb Chimera Website Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook Group Clubb Chimera Facebook Page Clubb Chimera Twitter Clubb Chimera YouTube Clubb Chimera Instagram Jamie Clubb Books
