Ep. 1815 What does 'natural' mean in wine? Pt. 2 | Everybody Needs A Bit Of Scienza
Welcome to Episode 1815. Today's episode is a recording of Prof. Scienza's seminar with Gabriele Gorelli MW, titled 'What does 'natural' mean in wine? How to engage wine lovers with science.' This is part 2 of 4.
The seminar’s abstract:
The European Commission has prohibited the use of the words “natural wine” on labels in Europe. Why? Primarily because there exists an underlying misunderstanding about what “natural” actually refers to in the wine sector. One side of the argument sees “natural” wines as those with zero interventions (i.e., no chemicals, no sulfites, no pesticides, etc.), while forgetting that the harvest, fermentation and bottling processes all involve human intervention. The other side of the argument says the only wines that are truly “natural” must be those made from wild vines with no genetic selection over time – and these wines simply do not exist.
While both arguments can be viewed as extreme, both have at heart a desire for sustainability, care for the environment and attention to the health of consumers. Recent trends, especially among young/new wine consumers and often fuelled by social media, point to an emphasis on the desire for “wholesome” food and beverage products that demonstrate a respect for nature and consumers’ health. These trends are not new, but the escalation of focus on these issues has caused a battle with existing consumers who value and recognize the key sensory references basic to the traditional evaluation of wine. Producers of “natural” wines contribute to the confusion by ignoring both sides of the argument and insisting that their winemaking choices stem solely from their beliefs about how wines should be made.
Is “natural” wine a myth? A marketing ploy? The darling of social media? If we focus on the “naturalness” of wine, do we risk foregoing ground-breaking research on precision viticulture, technique and technology that could represent the most effective way to enhance the terroir while respecting environmental and economic sustainability? How do we combat fake news and alarmism? We must address the great shortage of trainers and communicators who combine technical skills with the ability to make themselves not only understood, but also to fascinate those who listen or read.
If you want to learn more about the Professor:
The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” in place of “Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!

Ep. 1814 Kristian Keber of Edi Keber | Slow Wine 2023
Welcome to Episode 1814; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview features Kristian Keber of Edi Keber
Stevie Kim and her team traveled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon!
Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days.
More about today’s winery:
Kristian Keber's parents' house, Edi Keber, has a history of 350 years and is a prestigious winery that started bottling in 1957. He inherited an old vineyard from his grandfather Roman and he decided to realize his dream in the Goriška Brda Region. The cultivated grapes are the natives: Ribolla Gialla, Tocai Friulano and Malvasia Istriana. Of course, he followed the idea of Wine-Terroir and therefore the name of the wine is Brda, which is the Slovenian translation of Collio. The slopes are covered with terraced vineyards and the soil is called Ponca or Opoka. He has always loved macerated wines with spontaneous fermentation, and he has been experimenting with this method for years, now, Brda is the realization of it. He bottles only one type of wine named "BRDA"which expresses the land of Brda.

Ep. 1813 The UK Fine wine market in a post-pandemic world | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 1813, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into The UK Fine Wine Market In a Post-Pandemic World with Claudio Povero, Adam Lechmere, and Hermione Ireland
Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023.
wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide.
Abstract:
The UK has long been considered one of the most dynamic wine markets in the world, its supermarkets, fine wine merchants, e-commerce retailers and other platforms offering a dizzying choice. In any high street you might find a Feteasca Regala from Romania, an English Bacchus or a Ribolla Gialla from northern Italy, alongside more traditional offerings from a dozen classic regions. What does this wealth of choice mean for those who make and sell the wines – and the communicators who write, blog and vlog about them? What’s the most effective way of promoting a 50-year-old Tawny Port compared with a white wine from Etna? What’s the difference between selling a natural wine to 30-year-old in a trendy bar in Shoreditch, to getting your top cuvée into a fine wine merchant in Mayfair?

Guest Bio - Sergio Germano
Sergio was born in 1965, and as a child helped his parents in the vineyards after school. After finishing his enology studies in Alba, he worked for three important wineries in the area, all the while continuing to help out his father and contributing to the conversion of the family farm to a full-fledged winery. In 1988 the first 5,000 bottles of Barolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera were placed on the market together with a small production of Chardonnay. However, the turning point came in 1993 when all the family’s grapes produced were vinified and bottled. In 1995 Sergio bought about two hectares of Cerretta and started the challenge of producing white wines in Alta Langa, planting the first vineyards of Chardonnay, Reisling in Cigliè. In 1997 he married Elena Bonnelli who has given great support to the winery, helping Sergio with business administration as well as hospitality. The family then grew with the joy of the birth of two children: Elia born in 1998 and Maria born in 2001. After a few years, Sergio purchased another hectare in the vineyards of Prapò (2002), Lazzarito (2002), and Pradone (a parcel of Lazzarito) and also another parcel in Cerretta(2001). In 2010 Sergio’s mother inherited from her cousin Tommaso Canale half of a hectare in the most historic and famous vineyard of Serralunga d’Alba: Vigna Rionda.
Sergio’s goal is to express the territory and the character of the various vines, trying to express elegance and finesse in the wines, which as a Piedmontese tradition, are generally combined with gastronomy.

Ep. 1804 What Does 'natural' Mean In Wine? Pt. 1 | wine2wine Business Forum 2023 Series
Welcome to Episode 1804. Today's episode is a recording of Prof. Scienza's seminar with Gabriele Gorelli MW, titled 'What does 'natural' mean in wine? How to engage wine lovers with science.' This is part 1 of 4.

About today’s winery:
Tenute Bosco was born out of Sofia's sheer passion for wines and her desire to communicate the excellence and charm of Sicily around the world, beyond stereotypes. Since 2012, the vision has been dedicated to the mother of this ancient land: Mount Etna. Inspired by its natural beauty and respect for this terroir, the small production achieves a perfect balance between ancient tradition and modern technology, focusing on top-quality indigenous wines of unique character and elegance, truly expressing this terroir.
The organic grapes come from the northern side of the volcano, specifically from the town of Castiglione di Sicilia, in the domains of Piano dei Daini in Solicchiata and Santo Spirito in Passopisciaro, at around 700 to 750 meters above sea level. The wines include four Etna varieties: white, rosé, red, and a limited edition of pre-phylloxera

Welcome to Episode 1798 on Italian Wine Podcast, Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo. In today's episode, she interviews Enore Ceola
About today’s guest
Born in the heart of the Prosecco region, Enore Ceola grew up on a winery bordering the Friuli and Veneto regions of Italy. He graduated from the Institute of Technology at Pordenone with a degree in architecture. He had a brief stint as a civil engineer before deciding to drop everything to marry the love of his life after a two-year courtship. In early 1997, he returned to his family roots and reached out to Mionetto for employment prior to leaving for the U.S. With a stroke of luck, the Director of U.S. Exports position had been vacated and Enore was promptly introduced to the entire Mionetto family, leading him to immediately accept an offer. Soon he found himself in NYC, introducing not only Mionetto Prosecco, but also the Prosecco category itself to the American market. By 2000, Enore had achieved success in the competitive NY market before traveling across the country educating people about the world of Prosecco and the rich history of Mionetto. Praising Mionetto and Enore’s efforts, The New York Times stated: “Perhaps no one has pushed harder to establish Prosecco in the United States than Mionetto.” Mionetto has been awarded several recognitions including Fast Track Brand by Beverage Dynamics, a ‘Hot Brand’ for the 8+ years by IMPACT Magazine, and the ‘Growth Brand’ award for the 7th consecutive year by Beverage Information Group. Mionetto USA was honored the “Importer of the Year” award in 2011 by Wine Enthusiast. 2023 marked the 25th U.S. Anniversary for Mionetto & saw the introduction of Mionetto Alcohol-Removed Sparkling Wine. Enore is currently the Managing Director and CEO of Freixenet Mionetto USA, importing highly acclaimed wines from world-renowned wineries including Schloss Johannisberg, Castello di Monsanto, Alfred Gratien, Pertinace and others

Welcome to Episode 1796 in which host Giulia Stocchetti interviews Gloria Dal Bosco this week on The Next Generation where young Italian wine people 30 and under shake up the wine scene.
More about today’s winery:
Le Battistelle winery comes from the passion for the viticolture of the Dal Bosco's family. 20 years ago Gelmino and Cristina (the founders) stopped selling the grapes to the local cooperative to create their own interpretation of Soave Classico; today, with Andrea and Gloria (the sons) they enlarged the production with several kinds of Soave Classico. In Brognoligo, the little village in the heart of Soave Classico where they are located the soil is of volcanic origin and the viticolture is extreme: steep hills and dry stone walls.

Ep. 1791 Italian Fine Wine In Sweden | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 1791, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into ‘Italian Fine Wine in Sweden - Examples from a Wine Collectors’ Club’' presented by Niklas Bergqvist IWE, moderated by Alessandra Angelini
Abstract:
Vinkällaren Grappe is Sweden’s oldest and largest club for wine collectors, with more than 1,500 members. Founded in 1986 and situated in the heart of Stockholm, it cares for its members’ collections in its climate-controlled cellar vaults.
The clientele is mainly private collectors, but also corporate members. Besides storing their bottles under suitable conditions, it offers a database overview of the collection that is linked to Liv-Ex data for market value.
By looking at the evolution of the thousands of bottles that make up the collective inventory of the Club, Niklas Bergqvist will paint a picture of how the Swedish interest in Italian Fine Wine has changed over the years.
Focusing on 2008, 2018 and 2023 he will first investigate how Italian wine has performed in relation to wines from other countries in terms of both volume and value. Afterwards, the evolution of the relative importance between the different regions and origins within Italy in the same years will be explored.
Finally, there will be a brief overview of which options for sourcing wines are open to wine collectors in the Swedish monopoly-based wine market.
More about today’s presenter:
Niklas Bergqvist started out in the kitchens of various restaurants in Stockholm, Sweden. A deep interest in wine drove him to take a sommelier course to understand the concepts of matching wine and food. After a serious skiing accident that left him unable to walk due to a badly broken leg, he used his rehabilitation time focusing on the WSET Diploma; he finished the programme as the best Continental European student in 2012. Since then he has been working with wine full time as head sommelier in a private wine club for wine collectors. Bergqvist is also a WSET educator and Italian Wine Expert through the Vinitaly International Academy.

Ep. 1781 Giuseppe Speri Of Speri Winery | Slow Wine 2023
Welcome to Episode 1781; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview features GIuseppe Speri of Speri Winery
The Speri Winery, one of the historical families of Valpolicella, is an authoritative and faithful interpreter of Valpolicella Classica wines that has become, due to its uninterrupted traditions and strong territorial roots, a landmark in Italian winemaking.
The Speri Winery, with a story that begins in the first half of the 1800s, has now entered its seventh generation making wine from about 60 hectares of vineyards in the most select Valpolicella Classica areas.
The Winery strength has always been, and still is, a matter of teamwork, today engaging three generations – Carlo, Alberto, Giampaolo, Giampietro, Laura, Chiara, Luca and Giuseppe – that manage all stages of production activities, from the vineyard to the bottle.
In 2015, after practicing years of sustainable farming, the Winery achieved organic certification for all of the production.
The Speri family, respecting its territorial heritage, has always cultivated exclusively the native grape varieties of the Valpolicella zone (Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and other indigenous varieties), making wine only from grapes coming from its own vineyards and itself overseeing the entire production process.

Ep. 1774 McKenna Cassidy Interviews Giulio Bruni Of Tasca d'Almerita | The Next Generation
Welcome to Episode 1774 in which host McKenna Cassidy interviews Giulio Bruni of Tasca d'Almerita. this week on The Next Generation where young Italian wine people 30 and under shake up the wine scene.
More about today’s winery:
“Our story is written in the land, the same land where for eight generations we have dedicated the attention and love that you devote to a family member. Our grandparents taught us to respect the land, keeping an eye on the future. And this vision, still today, allows us to have thriving vineyards and rich, fertile land to farm. Over the years, a precise project to enhance and develop native varieties and territories with greater wine-growing vocation led us to expand. In addition to the historical estate, Regaleali, we now have Capofaro on Salina, in the Aeolian islands; Tascante on Mount Etna; Whitaker on Mozia in the province of Trapani; and Sallier de La Tour in the DOC Monreale area. Each of these estates has a story to tell, each one recounts a different Sicily. The greatest challenge for us now is that of preserving these places to leave our children a better environment, with constant attention to safeguarding each individual ecosystem.”
