Welcome to episode 1209, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today Stevie is in Irpinia, and she sits down with Ilaria Petitto to talk about the Consorzio, producers and wine! This episode was recorded in Campania, specifically in the Irpinia area of the province of Avellino. In this beautiful place, called Green Irpinia because it is surrounded by hills, mountains and forests, Stevie meets Ilaria Petitto, vice-president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini. Ilaria Petitto tells Stevie about the beauty of this area where quality wines are produced between 400 and 800 metres above sea level. Then Stevie discovers the characteristics of the three Iripiania wines, which are produced from the three grape varieties Fiano, Greco di Tufo and Aglianico from which Taurasi is made. Finally, Ilaria Petitto explains the next objectives of the Consortium that counts more then 500 associated. One of the objectives is to make known the beautiful Irpinia area, to promote a different side of Campania to tourists that is more than a beautiful coastline. The Consortium “Tutela dei Vini dell’Irpinia” was established as a voluntary, non-profit association, on 2003. Less than 50 kilometres from Naples, thanks to the conformation of its territory, Irpinia is a land devoted to the production of fine wines. The peculiar orography of the territory results in particular microclimates, varying from area to area, which allow different types of wines to be produced. In fact, Irpinia, today, is the province in Campania with the highest concentration of vineyards and can boast the presence of three DOCG wines: Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. The mission of the Consortium is to protect and enhance these wines, vine products, vineyards of Irpinia as a a national cultural heritage. About this Session Japan is Asia’s second largest wine market and the sixth largest importer of wine worldwide. For wineries wanting to export it represents a sophisticated market that is politically stable and one where long-term relationships are valued. It is a mature market with well-trained, knowledgeable and dedicated staff in the on and off-trade. Japan also boasts one of the most cultivated restaurant and bar scenes anywhere in the world. Japan’s top restaurants are destinations for gourmets from around the globe but especially from other Asian countries (in pre-pandemic times). As such they influence taste around the region. While Japanese wine consumers have traditionally been ‘Francophile’ the market is very broadminded and open to new or less well-known regions. Many of the more successful regions are supported by regional bodies / agencies who undertake local promotional activities. Key trends include sparkling wine, ‘low-intervention wines’, promotion of wine sets, changes in wine packaging. Experienced importers, many with decades of experience; dedicated wine writers, rather than ‘social media influencers’; and an army of trained sommeliers are among those who influence the market. All these positives need to be tempered by the knowledge that the aging population and deflation continue to constrain the market. About this Session We like to imagine science free from discrimination, impartial, neutral. In fact, like any other human activity, it never operates in a political vacuum: even science has its prejudices. The eugenics born in the nineteenth century, which postulates the existence of “superior races” and “inferior races” and which even inspires the policy of euthanasia of the “less fit” promoted by Nazism, is an eloquent example of this. Similarly, the hostility towards American vines is not the result of scientific findings based on objective evidence, but of deductions from a time when the wine of these vines was a witness of poverty and hunger. The session will explore the common origin of American species and European vine, which is currently very divisive in the scientific community. Reflecting on the elements supporting the main positions in this regard, Prof. Scienza will show how, from a scientific point of view, the ostracism towards the vines created by the crossbreeding of American and European varieties is not only not justified, but also prevents the resolution of important problems linked to wine production About the Speaker Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. About today’s guest: Steve Kreps has been a Navy Air Traffic Controller, manager for some of the largest wine and spirits companies in the country, founder of three successful businesses, the last of which is fine wine import, marketing and sales company Quintessential. He is a pilot, motorcycle enthusiast, outdoorsman, history buff, antique gun collector and, most important, a husband, father and grandfather. A full, and some might say unexpected life for a guy who grew up as the oldest of three children to a purchasing manager and a homemaker in 1950s St. Louis. This Missouri native with a definite “take charge” attitude and outlook on life attended the University of Missouri and served four years in the U.S. Navy as an air traffic controller and pilot during the Vietnam era. Fresh out of the service in 1973, Steve got his start in the wine industry as a sales representative and merchandiser. He rose through the sales ranks at such prestigious companies as Schieffelin & Somerset and Paterno Imports (now Terlato Wines), where he was National Sales Manager. In 1988, the entrepreneurial spirit moved Steve to found Marquis Selections, a wine brokerage company covering the Midwest for fine premium and ultra-premium wines. So loyal was Marquis Selections to its brands, and visa versa, that a number of those brands followed Steve to Caravelle Wine Selections, which he founded in 1998 as a fine wine import and marketing company with Bordeaux’ Baron Philippe de Rothschild and others. In 2002, Steve sold his partnership in Caravelle to form Quintessential. With Quintessential, Steve is realizing his dream to nurture a roster of family-owned wineries whose wines reflect the best expressions and highest quality of their particular appellations. Oscar enrolled at University of Milano, graduating with a degree in viticulture and enology in June 2015, and began working for the winery "Dirupi" in Valtellina (viticultural area located on the Alps) . His love for Nebbiolo was born here. He moved to Western Australia for 1 year working in the Great Southern area, working with Resling and Shiraz. Back in Italy in 2011 he will work for Livio Felluga in Friuli and Poggio San Polo in Montalcino until 2013. Now stands at the helm of the vineyards and cellar, having worked side by side with Domenico from 2013 to 2017. He understood Domenico like few others and was treated as a son. Working in some of the most coveted wine regions and cellars throughout Italy, Oscar has brought his knowledge and experience from outside of Piedmont and has helped to make significant adjustments and improvements in the winery and vineyards. Whilst studying at the prestigious Stellenbosch University, Manfred worked alongside the great Francois Naude at L’Avenir Estate. His winemaking journey continued to the Hawkes Bay, working under Gordon Russell at Esk Valley Estate in New Zealand. Then up to Vineyard 29 in Napa Valley, a custom crush winery, learning from some of Napa’s most legendary names, including Keith Emerson, Philippe Melka, Andy Erickson and Celia Masyczek. Following his return to South Africa, Manfred had the privilege of interning with famous American winemaking and viticultural couple, Zelma Long and Dr Phil Freese at Vilafonte in Stellenbosch. He then joined the team at Peregrine Wines in Central Otago for vintage before heading up to Ceretto, in Piemonte for his third harvest of the year. Following two years back in New Zealand, as assistant winemaker at Peregrine Wines, Manfred returned to Europe for another harvest in Barolo; this time working with the world famous Luca Currado at Vietti. It was at the tail end of his vendemmia at Vietti where the fateful visit to Querciabella took place. Alongside his friend and now mentor, Luca Currado, Manfred attended a technical tasting at the famous Tuscan winery. A few short days later, the call came from Querciabella, offering Manfred a full-time winemaking position with the team in Greve in Chianti. It is at Querciabella that Manfred has found a home since 2010; responsible for all aspects of the production of Querciabella’s wines, from the moment the grapes have ripened in the vineyards until the moment the wines go into bottle. She is an applied cognitive psychologist and currently serves as the Banfi Vintners Professor of Wine Education and Management at the School of Hotel Administration within Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business. LaTour's research is focused on consumer learning and memory of hedonic experiences. Her early worked considered how easily consumer memories can be distorted, and her current work looks at ways in which to strengthen memories. LaTour uses both experimental and qualitative research methods for her research. Most of LaTour's experimental studies have involved either staging experiences or using field opportunities so she can study factors that influence the consumption experience. Her qualitative work has used ZMET (Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique) as well as a variation using childhood memory elicitation. She has written over 70 scientific papers and book chapters. Latour’s research has been covered in media including USA Today and the New York Times. Some of her research focuses on memory distortion, nostalgia, differentiating online from land casino gambling, and developing new ways for learning complex products such as wine. She’s currently in charge of the Marketing, and manages part of the export sales. This week, we welcome Dave Foss who has worked in hospitality for over 27 years in virtually every facet of the food and beverage industry. He is currently a partner at Invictus Hospitality a food and beverage consulting firm that works with hotels and restaurants across the United States. He is also an Operating Partner at LaLou, a beloved wine bar in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. His passion for beverage led him to manage a series of programs on the West Coast, both at the Mondrian Hotel and later at Fairfax Partners Restaurant Group, overseeing four properties in the Los Angeles area. Upon returning to the East Coast, Dave went on to oversee the beverage programs at the Soho and Tribeca Grand Hotels in Lower Manhattan. In 2011 Dave connected with Epicurean Group co-owner Joe Campanale, who had recently opened Anfora, a wine bar in NYC’s West Village; the fellow Italian wine obsessives clicked, and soon Dave began a stint at Anfora which grew into nearly a decade of wine buying for the highly regarded establishment. Most recently, Dave and Campanale realized a dream that began when they first met: to open a neighborhood wine bar together. LaLou – which Eater called “an exciting natural wine bar from some of NYC’s most underrated pros” – debuted in June 2019, and spotlights small production wines from Dave and Joe’s favorite producers and regions around the world. More about today's show: Stevie visits Argillae winery in Orvieto, Umbria. She was introduced to the territory and some of the wines such as Panata, Vascellarus and Primo d’Anfora, a white wine fermented and sharpened in terracotta amphorae. The Argillae winery owes its name to the Latin word for the clay in which the terroir is rich. There are approximately 38 hectares of vineyards, situated at an altitude between 150 and 300 metres above sea level, with an east-west exposure on sunny hillsides. Its founder was Giuseppe Bonollo, who came from an important family of distillers. Today, the winery is managed by new generations of the Bonollo family.
