Ep. 1415 Federico Giuntini | Wine Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1415 in which Marc Millon interviews Federico Giuntini of Fattoria Selvapiana in today’s episode of Wine, Food & Travel
More about today’s guests:
Selvapiana was created in the Middle Ages as a watchtower and defense of the city of Florence to the north, along the valley of the river Sieve.
Transformed into a villa, during the Renaissance it was the summer residence of noble Florentine families and the bishops of Florence. It was purchased in 1826 by Michele Giuntini, a successful Florentine banker and ancestor of the current owner Francesco Giuntini, who led the company from 1957 to 1997. Having always understood the value of the Chianti Rufina area, with stubborn passion he has lavished great energy in its valorisation.
Francesco was among the first in Tuscany to produce wine from Sangiovese grapes alone and to link the company's flagship wine to a specific single vineyard: Bucerchiale. In 1979 he produced the first vintage of Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigneto Bucerchiale. In 1978, he was the first to place his trust in Franco Bernabei, an internationally renowned wine consultant, realizing his great abilities.
Today the property is managed by Silvia and Federico, children of Franco Masseti, farmer in Selvapiana from 1953 to 1990. Silvia and Federico were adopted by Francesco in 1994 to give continuity to their work.
Selvapiana currently has an extension of about 250 hectares of which 58 hectares of vineyards, 36 hectares of olive groves and 140 of woods. The land owned is spread over three municipalities, Rufina, Pelago and Pontassieve.

Simone Scaletta is one of the new rising stars amongst the new winemakers in the Langhe. His passion for wine and for the Langhe speaks for itself. In an area with no real estate, he was able to obtain vineyards in famous Crus that had nonavailable. As far as his wine-making goes, he is someone who uses cutting-edge techniques in a region known for tradition and blends them with a type of viticulture philosophy that is extra careful about the soil quality and the area’s biodiversity.

Stevie Kim and her team travelled to Dusseldorf, Germany this March to collaborate with ITA, the Italian Trade Agency. ITA was organizing some incredible Masterclasses featuring the best wines Italy has to offer. Each masterclass was led by the Master Sommelier Eros Teboni (awarded Best Sommelier Worldwide in 2018), and they wanted us there to document the amazing 3 days!
Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days.

Marzia was born in Taranto on March 24, 1989 where she lived until the age of 18; she is the elder sister of 3 brothers, a fundamental and integral part of her life and her company. She studied at the Universities of Milan, Lugano, Lausanne and London where he had the opportunity to focus on business strategy and marketing. Then the most beautiful and exciting but also difficult path begins: joining the family business, a wine producing company still focused on the marketing of bulk wine. The company is now led by the father with her and her brothers. Marzia has been at her side as Business Developer and Marketing and Sales director for 10 years. Thus, at the same time, she also began to train in the wine sector by obtaining the WSET L3.
La Varvaglione 1921 ( Vini di Puglia Varvaglione 1921, at the gates of Salento!) today it exports 5 million bottles to more than 70 countries around the world.
Varvaglione 1921 has been making wine for almost one hundred years, spanning four generations of the family. Today, it is one of the biggest and fastest developing companies in Puglia, steadily increasing the number of bottles produced and the quality of its wines. The company is based in Leporano on the Gulf of Taranto, in the famous Salento region. Experience and tradition have found synergy in the company’s use of innovative winemaking technology.
Today the company has three production areas: the winemaking plant and cellar, the bottling site and the shop, which used to be the headquarters of the company.
The feather in the cap today is the Masseria Pizzariello, a traditional Pugliese estate that symbolizes all of the history and way of life that is typical of the warm hospitality in this region.

About today’s Guest Producer - Anderson Hernanes
Anderson Hernanes de Carvalho Andrade Lima, better known as Hernanes or simply "The Prophet," was born in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1985.
A successful athlete with great skill, ball control, and a powerful shot with both his right and left legs, Hernanes played for various teams both in Brazil (São Paulo), Italy (Lazio, Internazionale, and Juventus), and even China, as well as representing the Brazilian national team (2014 World Cup and 2008 Summer Olympics). He won titles wherever he went, such as the Brazilian Championship twice with São Paulo, the Italian Championship with Juventus, and the Coppa Italia with Lazio and Juventus.
As for wine, Hernanes had no previous contact with it and was abstinent until 2010, when São Paulo sold him to Lazio in Italy. From there, a passion for wine completely took over Hernanes.
When he moved to Internazionale Milan in the 2013/14 season, the midfielder began to take his passion seriously. Things progressed even further between 2015 and 2016 when the Brazilian transferred to Juventus.
Upon arriving in Turin, Hernanes visited several wine regions and became enchanted by Monferrato. At the time, he didn't own a house in Italy and thought it would be the perfect place to establish his residence, so he started looking for something there. During these searches, he found Ca' del Profeta, which he purchased in 2015.
In addition to the Ca' del Profeta winery, Hernanes also owns Ca' del Profeta Ristorante & Relais, a wine tourism destination, and a wine bistrot in Turin called Luogo Divino.

Ep. 1391 Hannes Rottensteiner | Italian Trade Agency Masterclasses In Germany
Welcome to Episode 1391; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Dusseldorf, Germany. Today Joy Livingston interviews Hannes Rottensteiner from the Rottensteiner Family Wineries
About today’s guest and winery:
It has always been clear to Hannes that he wanted to remain faithful to wine. He is the cellar master at the family wineries, working with his father, together they produce 16 different varieties of white and red wine. Hannes took on the job as oenologist in 2001 while his father concentrates on the viticulture aspect.
THE ESTATE
“More than 50 years ago our grandfather Hans had a dream: to produce his own wine. Grandpa Hans's dream is our dream today.
The wine cellar was founded in 1956. In those years Hans gave priority to the sale of bulk wine in Switzerland. In the 80s, thanks also to the entry into the cellar of his son Toni, the work concentrated on the production of bottled wines. In 2001, his nephew Hannes, Toni's son, brought new support to the business. From the very beginning, not only the grapes from the ten hectares of the family vineyards were vinified in the cellar. The production was supplemented by that of about 50 local farmers. This collaboration has now become a tradition and is essential for the success and good quality of the wine.
Today, as then, we consciously focus on the typicality of the wine varieties and place a clear emphasis on the typical wines of Bolzano: Lagrein and Santa Maddalena.”

Ep. 1379 Sebastiano De Corado | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1379 in which Marc Millon interviews Sebastiano de Corato of
Azienda Vinicola Rivera.
More about Azienda Vinicola Rivera:
The de Corato family roots go deep into the agriculture of Puglia. Here, in the countryside of Andria, Sebastiano de Corato founded the Azienda Vinicola Rivera in the late 1940s, inspired by a vision of realising, and bringing to the world’s attention, the enormous viticultural potential of the Castel del Monte area.
Widespread recognition quickly followed and since then Rivera, has become the benchmark of Puglia quality wine production and the force driving its rebirth, thanks also to innovations in both vineyards and winemaking introduced since the early 1980s by his son Carlo.
Today, with the involvement of the third generation of the family represented by Carlo’s sons Sebastiano and Marco, Rivera continues with pride and renewed commitment the production of wines that eloquently express the intense yet elegant character of this land and its native grape varieties.
The winery’s winemaking philosophy is rigorously applied to every step of the process: vineyard management, grape harvest, winemaking, maturation and bottling; the most up-to-date viticultural and oenological practices are married to the deepest respect for natural processes, with all activities focused on achieving environmental and economic sustainability and on continuous improvement in quality.

Ep. 1378 Dan Petroski | Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo
Welcome to Episode 1378 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Dan Petroski.
More about Dan Petroski:
A decade into his publishing career at Time Inc., Dan Petroski took a moment to reflect and he jettisoned to Italy for a year. While Petroski's intention was to return to New York, a harvest invitation in 2006 to come to California was too good to pass up. After harvest, Petroski was hired at Napa's Larkmead as cellar master, ultimately claiming the winemaker title in 2012. Petroski spent nearly 15 years at Larkmead, cementing his status as a top-tier Napa Valley Cabernet winemaker; during that period Petroski launched a white wine only brand called Massican, an ode to the Mediterranean and Petroski's time spent living in Italy and drinking white wine. Petroski's approach and ability to craft wines as diverse as Cabernet Sauvignon and Tocai Friulano has earned him perfect 100-point scores, Top 100 wines, recognition as San Francisco Chronicle's Winemaker of the Year in 2017 and Food & Wine magazine's Drinks Innovator of the Year in 2022.

Ep. 1375 Charlie Arturaola | On The Road Edition With Stevie Kim
Welcome to episode 1375, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. In this episode Stevie sits down with Charlie Arturaola at Wine Cube, an event organized by Partesa.
More about today’s guest:
Since he ran away at the sound of gunfire at a soccer match and hid in an empty wine barrel Charlie Arturaola has been a wine lover. When he put his nose to the wood he smelled wine, the wine to become his life long passion.
As a world-renowned sommelier, Charlie has one of the ten best palates in the world according to the American Wine Association. One sip and he can tell you the history of the wine, the soil the grapes grew in, the wood of the casket, the amount of sun the grapes enjoyed, and how long it was fermented.
It’s a rare gift and has served him well as he went from Santo Domingo to the Cunard Lines to Wine Director of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Now Charlie is the president of Grappolo Blu, and speaks about, judges and assesses wine for clients around the globe. Sipping and spitting from New York to Napa, from Vienna to Beijing, Charlie informs, educates and entertains wine lovers in five languages, winning countless hearts and awards, including the Chevalier by the Ordre des Coteauz de Champagnes, and in 2012 the International Wine and Spirits Communicator of the Year.
Charlie loves working with young people and mentored students of hospitality in the fine points of wine at Johnson & Wales University and Lynn University. He is also a member of the Society of Wine Educators, American Sommelier Association, Associazione dei Sommeglierie Italianne, and the American Society of Appraisers. He is on the board of directors for Toast to Humanity.
Knowledgeable, convivial, and with a large following, Charlie was one of the founders and chairmen of the Mendoza Wine Festival. There he was discovered and, along with his wife, Pandora, became a movie star in a “fictional documentary,” El Camino del Vino.

The company now in its fourth generation represents one of the most significant historical realities for the production of Morellino di Scansano since in the early seventies, Alessandro had the intuition, pioneering for the area, to bottle it himself rather than sell it in bulk.
The company Superintendent in continuous expansion over the years has expanded and diversified the productions, today managed by Cristina, Alessandro's daughter, aims a lot at generational synergy guaranteeing that combination of Tradition and Innovation which represents the added value in all phases of production.

VeroVino Founder, CEO, and Sommelier
I'm a New Yorker living in Italy for 20 years. After becoming a sommelier and getting to know hundreds of smaller producers with great tasting authentic products, but mainly unknown in the US, I decided to start 'spreading the love' by importing in these hidden gems with the company I started, VeroVino, which sells to businesses and consumers across the US. We target ‘engaged explorers’, those who want to explore and taste ‘undiscovered’ wines and foods made by farmer-artisans.

About today’s guest producer:
Aldo Clerico
Small producer in the Barolo area and more precisely in Monforte d'Alba, one of the 11 towns in the Barolo area. Before starting his adventure as a wine producer, he studied and graduated in accounting.
After a short time, he realized that that job is not for him and decided to change his life.
Before embarking on the path that will lead him to the production of wines, he decides to go and work for a couple of years in some wineries in the area, including Domenico Clerico, to learn the "secrets" for producing excellent wines.
Subsequently in 2004 he decided to start his own adventure and began to make wine from the grapes of his family business and to produce the typical wines of the area: dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo.
Aldo Clerico does not define himself as a wine producer but first of all he is a farmer who loves his work and the vineyard because the most important part in the production cycle is done with great care and attention

Ep. 1370 Antonio Arrighi | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1370 in which Marc Millon interviews Antonio Arrighi of Arrighi Winery on the Island of Elba.
More about Arrighi:
“At first, when I was still a boy, I used to come to the cellar as a favor for my father . The activity I liked was staying in the hotel…I became passionate about viticulture in the early 90s, when we started experimenting with the Arezzo Viticulture Research Center…
The experience with the Arezzo Viticulture Research Center led me to devote myself totally to the cellar and the quality of the wines, leaving my job as a hotelier to become a winemaker ” says Antonio.
“The vineyard area was only 2 hectares. Today it is about 8 hectares and still expanding,” says Antonio…
In 2010 The amphorae arrive
Experimentation begins with the first terracotta amphora from Impruneta.
“We were looking for a container that had the same micro-oxygenation characteristics as wood, but which, unlike wood, did not transfer substances to the wine,” said Antonio.
“So we arrived at the amphorae , recovering an ancient tradition also present in the history of the Island of Elba”.
Tresse of 2010 is the first wine in amphora of the Island of Elba , a "cru" composed of Sangiovese, Syrah and Sagrantino: it evolves in amphora for 18 months and continues aging in the bottle for 6 months.

Welcome to Episode 1369 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Gary Fisch.
More about Gary:
When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in political science, he didn’t yet know where life would take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, when he traveled to Louis Martini for a business trip. During the visit, Louis spent hours communicating his passion for the winemaking process to Gary. After that experience, Gary knew he wanted to become an expert, so he enrolled in the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World’s wine courses. That enthusiasm and knowledge served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. After years of expansion, Gary’s now has several locations in New Jersey, as well as a flagship location in St. Helena, CA, right across the street from Louis Martini, where it all began for Gary. Gary and his wife, Liz, spend part of the year living in their house in St. Helena, so on any given day, you may run into Gary helping guests find the perfect wine. Gary’s passion for customer service, wine, and retail is palpable, and can be felt walking through every one of his stores.
