Today, he will be interviewing Jacopo Maniaci More about today’s winery The Tenuta di Fessina project was born in 2007, when after a series of trips aimed at studying and discovering the Etna terroir, Silvia Maestrelli, late Tuscan producer and pioneer on the volcano, decided to stop in Rovittello, on the northern side, where today the beating heart of Fessina resides. Here she was captivated by the uniqueness of the place, the very particular position of the soil, gathered between two volcanic slopes dating back to 1809 and 1911. From here it all begins, first in the North, precisely in 2007, then to the South West, one of the bets initials made in 2009, and finally to the East, in the municipality of Milo, starting from 2012. The philosophy of TDF project, is to collect and vinify different snapshots, all taken from different sides and only in historical reference areas. Jacopo Maniaci takes place at the winery in 2014 as winery director and in 2021 as CEO, he graduated Economics and communication at UNI of Messina, Sicily, and took a Master Degree at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Cuneo. His family is in restaurants and breeding in the mountains of Nebrodi, but he lives at the winery since 2017, taking care of the whole TF project. Fessina in particular rests on an alluvial residual, pyroclastic, a sandy and fine deposit, made of volcanic sand and pumice, dating back between 5,000 and 15,000 years old, draining and capable of guarantee elegance and verticality. Today the winery sells in 20 countries, with average 80.000 bottles of DOC Etna wines. Vajra is one of the historical names of the Piedmontese Langhe, a company that has extended over a vineyard area covering a total of fifty hectares since 1972. Located in the municipality of Barolo, the winery produces strongly territorial wines, starting from all the most typical vineyard varieties of the area. A family-run company, where two generations work side by side, creating a combination of dynamism and loyalty towards the most ancient local traditions, to which is added particular attention to the most modern technical and scientific innovations that progress is capable of at the moment to offer: mass selections, treatments done with the utmost respect for the territory and nature using synthetic products only where strictly necessary. During the harvest phase, and also subsequently, rigorous selections of the grapes are carried out, to achieve the maximum result in each bottle in terms of fidelity to the vine and the Langhe terroir. More about today’s winery: The core of our company’s philosophy is commitment to the landscape; we are only guardians of Nature and must act to preserve and respect the land with decision making in accordance with the season. We cultivate or cover crop according to the vigour of the vines, we manage with a focus on soil heath, we use sulphur and copper in response to the weather and we adapt canopy heights according to the natural shoot growth. To achieve this, we improved old vineyards and established new ones with traditional vine densities of 8,000 to 11,000 vines per hectare. We source the cuttings for new vineyards exclusively from our old vines (over 100 years old). Our yields are less than 1 kg/vine and we have achieved a vine balance that highlights the characteristics of the land. Organic fertilisers, green manure, low amounts of copper and the use of herbal teas based on horsetail and nettle, all contribute to make our vines the core of our production process. Co-Moderator - Fanny Breuil is from Angers in the Loire and have always been into wine. She studied agronomy engineering and oenology. First, she worked as a winemaker (France, Italy, Chile) and then as a salesperson for a wine importer in the USA. In 2008, She founded her company Genuine Wines with a deep willingness to help winegrowers located in lesser-known or underappreciated wine regions (but that had great potential). She started with Jura and Emilia Romagna. Since then she has been helping them with their export markets as part of each team. These are French and Italian domaines. She grew up in the countryside and helped run the family business producing fruit, tomatoes and wine. After graduating in agrarian studies with a technical-economic focus, Paola has worked for a year in Roma for a company that dealt with research in agriculture. In particular, she followed the various phases of development of the national vineyard register by carrying out monitoring in various regions of Italy, surveying existing vineyards and verifying their accuracy by aerial survey of the territory. The year 1991 was a turning point in her life because she met Buddhism, which she still practices today, and decided to return to her family to take care of the business with her parents. In 1996 she married a musician who is still her life partner with whom she has four children, a boy and three girls. The first vines planted by a Mustilli was back in 1700’s but the family estate has been created in 1960 by her father, leonardo Mustilli who rediscovered the local indigenous grape varieties, including Falanghina. Today the domain spreads over 15 ha.
