IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode five | Uncanny X-Men Retrospective with Ed Brisson & Kelly Thompson, part one

This week, we are joined by TWO very special guests: Kelly Thompson (Black Widow / Captain Marvel / Amazing Spider-Man) returns along with Ed Brisson (Predator / Batman Incorporated / Beyond the Breach) as we look back on their collaboration with Matt on Uncanny X-Men!IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books! Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer PeopleEnjoy!Hey again. So this episode is a little different. This is actually something Kelly, Ed, and I talked about doing a while ago but never got around to. We all talk regularly and are pretty close friends (despite Ed’s obvious disdain for me on the podcast), so getting together to discuss our 10 issue run of Uncanny X-Men made a lot of sense to us. It seemed like a fun way to relive a crazy moment in all of our careers, give fans a behind the scenes glimpse at the book, and maybe even learn some stuff about ourselves. It was Kelly who really pushed for this to actually happen though, but she doesn’t have a podcast and I do, so I win.Meanwhile I’m trying to not feel weird about the fact that my internet dropped out and I disappear from the show for 4 minutes and not only does no one notice, but the show actually runs much better. But the joke is on them because while I was waiting for my modem to reboot I made myself an egg cream and they just had to keep talking to each other about Infinity Stones or something. To read the complete series you can pick up UNCANNY X-MEN: DISASSEMBLED in paperback or fancy hardcover wherever comics are sold. And if you want to see what the book is all about, you can read the first issue for free here. I’m not sure Marvel knows that that is up there, so maybe keep this between us. Maybe they do? I don’t know. I guess a few Marvel folks read this newsletter. Everyone be cool. You should check out Ed’s excellent newsletter here to stay up to date on all the cool stuff he has going on.I shouldn’t have to tell you where to find Kelly’s newsletter since she’s basically the cohost of this show at this point, but just in case you missed it you can click here.A big thanks to all our collaborators on UNCANNY X-MEN for making it beautiful and fun- Mahmud Asrar, R.B. Silva, Adriano Di Benedetto, Yildiray Cinar, Pere Pérez, Rachelle Rosenberg, Mirko Colak, Ibraim Roberson, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessey, Guru-eFX, Joe Caramagna, Chris Eliopoulos, Leinil Francis Yu, Edgar Delgado, Elizabeth Torque, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Roberto Poggi, Matt Milla, and Jason Keith. And lastly, a huge loving thanks to our editors for putting up with us, making sure the book came out, and making sure it was good- Chris Robinson, Darren Shan, and Jordan D. White. As always you can listen to older episodes of IDEAS DON’T BLEED here or wherever you get your podcasts. And if you aren’t subscribed to this newsletter you can do so below. Get digital comics, discounts on cool stuff, new podcasts sent to you every week, and even get comics not available anywhere else.Tune in next week for part two to see if Ed makes me cry.Stay safe. Take care of each other. Try to notice when people disappear.-Matthew RosenbergNYC 10/17/22 This is a public episode. I didn’t spend much time at NYCC, but I did get to hang out with Gerry for a little bit and duck into the party/exhibit he had for the book. IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode three | Gerry Duggan, part one

This week, we’re joined by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool / X-Men / Analog) as we discuss his career, his new photo book on Kickstarter Timing/Luck, and his upcoming comics projects!Check out and support the Kickstarter HERE!IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books! Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer PeopleEnjoy!A few years ago I was taking the downtown A train late one night with Gerry Duggan for some reason or another. And, as often happens, a person started being uncool on the train. They had been acting strangely and yelling at passengers at random for a few stops when suddenly they went off. Screaming, pushing, throwing things, snarling, spitting. People began to flee. And as I turned to Gerry to tell him we should switch cars, I found him with his camera in hand, snapping photos of everyone involved, a look of pure delight on his face. As the car began to empty around us I felt it was my duty, as a native New Yorker, to really explain to Gerry that we were about to be in a bad situation. I quietly stated what I thought was becoming obvious.“Gerry, we need to go. This is when people get stabbed.”And Gerry turned away from his camera’s display for a second to look me in the eye and say my favorite thing.“Matthew, this is when the good stuff happens.”Nobody got stabbed. Gerry got some amazing photos. And none of them were even good enough to make it into his beautiful new book. But I was glad I was there to watch him work. I’m glad the book exists. And I’m glad we got to talk about it for you all to hear.Stay safe. Take care of each other. Don’t leave before the good stuff happens.-Matthew RosenbergNYC 10/3/22 This is a public episode. When I came up with the idea to do the show I wasn’t really sure it was a good idea, or that it was something I’d want to do, or that it was something anyone would want to hear. With the first episode out last week I feel like I can safely put the last of those three concerns to bed. A ton of you seemed to check out the show and have nice things to say about it, so thank you so much. We have a lot more coming. And because we got asked a lot, yes, it will be going out on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Youtube, and all the rest soon. We want to make sure every episode is exclusive to the newsletter subscribers for a month first. Giving me your email address has it’s perks.**Depending on your definition of “perk.”In other news, we are doing our first livestream this Wednesday with the wonderful and talented Ryan Stegman. And that’s the link to our brand new Youtube Channel where we will be hosting our livestreams, posting our podcast episodes, and maybe more. So you should go ahead and absolutely smash that like and subscribe button to pieces, as the influencers say.If you don’t know who Ryan is, you’re missing out. He is the brilliant superstar artist on stuff like VENOM, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, and the recently released smash hit VANISH. And he’s very funny and handsome, so you should definitely come hang out with us because maybe that stuff is contagious. It’s at 6pm Eastern and you can tune in live while we discuss… I don’t know? What do you want us to discuss? You can reply to this email with questions or show up and ask some in the comments of the livestream! And if we ask your question on the air you will be entered to win a very cool prize! We’re going to do these regularly going forward but they will probably only be for paying subscribers to participate in. The rest of you will have to be content to watch it after the fact. So come hang out! Man, I hope I don’t suck… I really hope Ryan doesn’t suck.Hope to see you there.Stay safe. Take care of each other. Like and subscribe and like and subscribe and like and subscribe and like and subscribe and like and…-Matthew RosenbergNYC 9/26/22 This is a public episode. IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode one | Kelly Thompson, part one

This is the inaugural episode of the podcast, which is presented by Ashcan Press and features Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful weekly guests from the world of comic books! To kick things off, we are joined by comic book writer Kelly Thompson (Black Widow / Captain Marvel / Amazing Spider-Man). We’re diving into her new series BLACK CLOAK, which you can read the start of right now, for free!Check it out along with her other new creator owned comics on her excellent newsletter HERE.Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer PeopleEnjoy!Hi there.A few brief notes on what this is since I didn’t explain it much beforehand. This is the first of what will now become a weekly release of our brand new Podcast, over-dramatically entitled IDEAS DON’T BLEED. I had a few different goals with all this and I am genuinely excited for people to check it out.Firstly, I always want to keep this newsletter fun and interesting. And what better way than inviting my friends to be fun and interesting so I don’t have to? Secondly, I do get very self conscious of constantly writing about and promoting my own work. I know that’s part of the job, but that doesn’t mean I am comfortable with it. So this allows me to use this platform to shine the spotlight on some creators and some work that I really care about. And lastly, and maybe contradictorily, I am constantly trying to move out of my comfort zone here. I think that’s important for this whole project to be honest, I think it’s important for my work, and maybe even my mental well being. So, as much as I don’t love being in front of the proverbial camera or leading the discussion, I want to try and embrace it and see where that takes me. And I’m excited to invite you all along for the ride. With all that in mind, I went out and recruited two of the best people working in the comics / podcasting field today to help make sure this doesn’t crash from go. Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan are collectively known by the disgusting nickname The Supple Boiz and have been making their own podcasts, as well as running this kind of stuff for our friends Ryan Stegman and Kids Love Chains for a while. I couldn’t ask for better co-pilots on this. After you’ve listened here make sure to go check out their excellent podcast. As for settling on what the exact content of said podcast should be, that was a little more complicated. I’m not sure how many times someone should have to deal with me saying “ummm…” over and over in their headphones in a day, but I am a fan of more deep dive podcasts, so we had a bit of a tug of war. Where we landed is splitting the difference and making each interview run about an hour so we can have a good conversation but we’re going to be chopping it up into bite size thirty minute chunks to make it easier to digest.Even with the excellent guidance of the Supple Boiz we’re still learning as we go. So if you notice any annoying ticks or weird things, don’t worry, we’re probably painfully aware of them and we’ll be doing our best to fix them. But if you have any suggestions of who you’d like to hear on the show, or things you’d like us to focus on, hit us up in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.And special thanks to one of my favorite writers and dearest friends, Kelly Thompson, for enthusiastically agreeing to be our guinea pig on this. She is as good a sport as she is a writer. Come back next week for Part II of our discussion.Stay safe. Take care of each other. Practice saying “umm” less when you speak. I am.-Matthew RosenbergNYC 9/19/22 This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit ashcanpress.substack.com
