History of the Bay: Mistah F.A.B.
History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 85: Mistah F.A.B. has been at the center of the Bay Area hip-hop scene since he splashed on the scene as the Crown Prince of Hyphy in the early 2000s. Growing up in North Oakland, FAB's parents were in the street life but pushed him towards a different route. This led him to developing his talent as a rapper, putting out his first album "Nig-Latin" through Straight Hits Entertainment with Jazzy Jim and Gary Archer. This eventually led to him catching the attention of Mac Dre, and FAB's debut album "Son of a Pimp" dropped on Thizz Entertainment. This conversation about FAB's early career is like a history of Bay Area rap in itself, touching on artists like Andre Nickatina, The Jacka, Souls of Mischief, Too Short, Messy Marv, and many more.

Mark Bodē is the son of cartoonist Vaughn Bodē, a pioneer of the underground comix scene. A contemporary of artists like Robert Crumb, Vaughn created characters like Cheech Wizard, the Bodē Lizards, and the Bodē Broads. Known for his Erotica series of art, Vaughn ventured into psychedelic art and deep spirituality. Although he died when Mark was only 12, Vaughn taught his son to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career as an artist. Mark kept his father's characters alive and also created his own comics like "Miami Mice." This led him to work with Kevin Eastman on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. As his father's character started appearing in New York subway graffiti, Mark embraced the works of writers like Dondi, Seen, Zephyr and Revolt. With roots in San Francisco, Mark has also been a big part of the Bay Area graffiti scene while also bringing his father's characters into murals, tattoos, animation, and much more.

DaBoii is a founding member of the Bay Area supergroup SOB X RBE, who has maintained success as a solo artist since the group's split. After a recent stint in county jail, he's now focused on making a new chapter in his life, learning from past mistakes, and going harder in music. Growing up in Vallejo, he and the other members of SOB X RBE quickly reached nationwide stardom with platinum songs, sold out tours, and worldwide exposure. After the group broke up, DaBoii chose not to focus on past drama and instead put his foot on the gas to push his solo career. Now that he's more mature and focused, he's ready to work even harder and reach new heights as an artist.

Kamaiyah took the hip-hop scene by storm when she emerged with her hit "How Does It Feel." But she started with humble beginnings going through the foster care system in Oakland. Inspired by people from Missy Elliot to 2pac, Kamaiyah started writing poetry at a young age and eventually working with local rappers like DB The General and D-Lo. When she started dropping her own solo projects, this eventually led her to sign a record deal with YG's 4Hunnid Entertainment. Although she created hits for YG and Drake, and had an album in the works with Kehlani, she grew frustrated with the label situation and went independent. Now Kamaiyah continues to put out her projects independently and prove why she is one of the most unique voices in hip-hop today.

Transitioning from the streets to the rap game after surviving 9 gunshots, 22nd Jim formerly known as Offset Jim has been on a consistent wave for the last few years. His meteoric rise was supported by appearances with ALLBLACK, who hails from the same Murder Dubs section of East Oakland. Jim credits his success in music to his popularity in Oakland and known authenticity to the gritty street life he portrays in his music. This has led to recognition in the Bay and beyond, including shoutouts from NBA all-star Klay Thompson and Drake's OVO label and clothing line. Feeling like he's accomplished everything there is to do in the Bay Area, Jim is now setting his sights beyond the Bay and looking to take his career even further.

History of the Bay: Anh Phoong
Anh Phoong is a personal injury attorney who has become an icon in the Bay Area and beyond with her massive billboard campaigns and slogan, “Something wrong? Call Anh Phoong.” The child of Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants, Anh had humble beginnings growing up in San Jose and Sacramento. Starting at community college, she made her way towards law school after being inspired to pursue criminal justice. Anh graduated as valedictorian of Lincoln Law School and passed the California bar. After being turned down for a public defender job, she decided to start her own law firm specializing in personal injury. Far from an “ambulance chaser,” Anh has built a successful practice based on her skills as an attorney. When she shrewdly pursued an aggressive billboard campaign during the pandemic, she skyrocketed to success and has now become a ubiquitous personality all across California.

History of the Bay: Runtz Founders
Yung LB, Joeski and Rozay are three of the founders of Runtz, one of the most popular cannabis brands in history. Their story starts before legalization, when powerful strains like purple, kush, and champagne were still exotic and hard to find. They met through their mutual passions for music and cannabis culture and started touring as the Cookie Boyz, mentored by artists like Berner and The Jacka. Once they met the growers who created the strain that would become Runtz, they innovated new ways to promote, market, and brand a strain that had never been done before. Years later, Runtz is still a premier cannabis strain and has opened up multiple opportunities for entrepreneurship.

Writing his first raps in 1982, Calvin T is a pioneer of Bay Area rap that is often left out of the history books. Coming out of Richmond, he met his rhyme partner Mack Magic Mike in juvenile hall and started recording his first tapes once he was released. As contemporaries of Too $hort and Freddy B, Calvin T and Magic Mike were early influences to the artists that followed like E-40, Mac Dre and Mac Mall. 40 even signed Calvin to Sick Wid It Records, but his album was never released. Calvin was introduced to the pimp game at age 13, and his rap career was derailed by multiple prison stints. On episode 17, we had Magic Mike tell their story and now we have Calvin T sharing his perspective in his most in-depth interview ever.

History of the Bay Episode 72: As the son of Fillmore Slim, Frank Stickemz got exposed to street life early. At the same time, this is also what introduced him to the fashion, style, and music of hip-hop culture. When Fillmore went to the federal penitentiary, that led to Frank being in the system and eventually moving from the Bay Area to the East Coast. When he returned to the Bay, Frank started his own rap career alongside the likes of Keak Da Sneak and the Jacka, co-starring on the popular "Dope Game" series on Rah Records. After his own federal case derailed his momentum, Frank bounced back and ended up working with the likes of Bobby Brown and becoming a new member of Tony! Toni! Toné!

History of the Bay: Sunspot Jonz
Sunspot Jonz fka BFAP is one half of Mystik Journeymen and a founding member of Living Legends. Growing up in East Oakland, he fell in love with music early but didn't identify with gangsta rap trends. This led Sunspot to find like-minded artists in the underground hip-hop scene, like his partner Luckyiam fka PSC, who joined Mystik Journeymen. Frustrated with the mainstream music industry, they pressed their own tapes and CDs, created their own magazine, and threw their own shows, including the Broke Ass Summer Jam. After traveling the world independently, the Journeymen became founders of the Living Legends crew along with Grouch, Murs, Eligh, Arata, Scarub, Bicasso, and Aesop. Since then, the Legends have sold millions of units and continue independently touring around the world.
