25. How to Protect Your Work Against COPIERS
Though a vast and triggering subject for us all, we felt the convo needed to be had. Join us as we share our individual (and pretty unique) stories about being copied, what defines copying and where it gets annoyingly nuanced, the things copiers LOVE to say, and ultimately, how to prevent your work from being copied as best you can (some solutions might not be what you think!). And if you're a copier who wants to defend your right to "be a great artist who steals" don't @ us. We address this quote and its rape-y origins, head on. 24. Geek Out: For the Artist/ASTROLOGY Girlies
We're astrology bitches now! Join us for the first in our series of GEEK OUT episodes, where we let our nerd flags fly and dive into art plus one of our special interests. In this episode, Devon brings back her 20-something, woo-crazed, almost-professional astrologer self to give a star-influenced diagnosis of your hosts and famous artists of the past. Turns out there's might be some planetary influence on the kind of art you make. And why Artemisia Gentileschi was a badass and Picasso suckedddd. We had a good time with that one. 23. Surviving the Economic Downturn
Finally a FUN and LIGHT HEARTED topic for you...jk. But, if you're anything like us, you'll find this discussion validating at the very least. Being an artist over the long haul means weathering the good, bad and ugly of the economy. How you adapt and stay connected to your work throughout those seasons is crucial (as many of us are experience right meow). In this conversation, we talk about the factors that have created the current less-than-ideal-state of the art market, how to adapt from a business perspective, and how to do what's best for you and your work along the way. 20. Imposter Syndrome, Mentorship and More with Sabrina Mari
Today we have a special co-host, friend and fellow mentee of Marisa's- Sabrina Mari! Since both Sabrina and Devon have been mentored by Marisa over the years, we thought it would be fun to chat about what they've learned, how they all came together, the importance of mentorship, community and different teaching styles. We love Sabrina for her transparency and realness (she obvi fits right in with the gang here) and we ended up going deep into imposter syndrome, being self-taught, taking long breaks from art and a whole lot more. We think you'll find her and this episode HIGHLY relatable no matter where you are with your practice and career. 16. How To Talk About Your Work + Prep For Studio Visits
"Tell me about your work?" is the most dreaded and opened ended question on the planet, according to most artists. And yet! If you make art you will most definitely be asked it, and a whole lot more in follow up. In fact, once upon a time, Devon had booked a studio visit and had no idea how to prepare, or what the heck she would be asked. So she called up Marisa and got a FULL run down of all the possible things that could happen and what she could say about her work (lucky her). In today's episode, we recreated that prep session for you. You might want to grab a pen and paper to jot down these q's and sentence starters, cause it's basically an entire "tell me about your work" outline, start to finish. 10. How to Succeed (and Fail) at Collabs with Meggy Wilm
Today's topic is particularly beloved by your hosts: collaboration! (Hey, this show is kinda a collab. Meta right? We talk about that.) Art collabs can go amazingly right or amazingly wrong, and telling all about what causes them to go one way or the other, from our personal experiences. You'll hear from two VERY different collaborative teams: Devon and Marisa, and Andrea and Meggy (today's special guest!). So brace yourself for both, the extremely planned and the harmoniously chaotic ways that one might approach creative partnership. In addition to how to choose the right partner, what to discuss upfront, what should be expected of both artists, the do's and don't's and a whole lot more. If you wanna own one of Devon and Marisa's collabs for rEaL, be sure to check out their dome collection, dropping August 14th! Seeing as self-doubt tends to go hand-in-hand with making art, confidence is often a scary (yet crucial!) topic for us.
